P3 Problem Solving

P3 did the Three Monkeys Addition Problem

Three monkeys ate a total of 25 nuts,

Each of them ate a different odd number of nuts.

How many nuts did each monkey eat?

Some of our answers:

5 + 3 + 17 = 25
5 + 9 + 11 = 25
19 + 1 + 5 = 25
7 + 5 + 13 = 25
7 + 3 + 15 = 25
1 + 9 + 15 = 25
1 + 11 + 13 = 25

We found that

  • using cubes helped some pairs
  • using bonds of ten and twenty helped
  • after we used a bond of twenty plus 5 we could use it again to make a bond of 10 plus 15 e.g. 7 + 13 + 5 so 7 + 3 + 15

It was fun!

P7 helper in P3

We have loved having Will to help us in class today.  He’s been so kind and helpful. He has helped lots of boys and girls with their reading and maths. He played keyword Bingo with a group.  Mrs. Thomson would love to have him in class every week.

THANK YOU so much Will.

Sadie:  He helped us all lots and we will all miss him.

Holly: Will helped the Ahlbergs read and he helped in Maths.

Jade: It was good to have a P7 who knows his stuff. When we were reading a recount he told us it needs to be in chronological order. That’s the order that it happened in.

Matthew: It was fun reading the playscript with Will. I was being Chip. Will was a narrator.

What do we think we already know?

The Sun is boiling hot. It has lava or something in it and gas.

The Sun is made of gas and fire.

Day and night are the same length of hours.

There are 12 months in a year.

The Moon is a giant lump of rock.

The Moon has bumps called craters.

The stars, Sun and Moon are powerful.

There are 7 days in a week.

Autumn is a warning about Winter and we harvest all our food.

Maths problem solving

We had fun today using our addition skills to solve a problem. Some people said it was tricky but a little challenge helps us learn.

Here is the puzzle:

Chico’s cards are all different.

There is a number from 1 to 8 on each.

Chico has chosen four cards that add up to 20. What are they?

There are 7 possibilities. Try to find them all.

Most pairs found it helpful to use playing cards. They listed their answers e.g. 7 + 3 + 6 + 4. We soon discovered that our bonds to 10 helped us. Some pairs were fast to use two cards to make 11 then two to make 9.

We had to check that we hadn’t repeated a solution e.g. 6 + 4 + 7 + 3 is the same as 7 + 4 + 3 + 6

Try our problem. Good luck.

Teddy bear adventure

We had an amazing trip to Dawyck gardens and our teddy bears got up to mischief in the yurt with Edward Bear when we were learning about SWAF.

SWAF is what animals need to survive. Shelter, Water,Air and Food.

Here we are making little islands that have SWAF and everything that animals need to survive.

P3 Teddy Bear Adventure

P3 had a wonderful afternoon at Dawyck Botanic Gardens. The sun came out after a rainy start to the day. We enjoyed exploring the woodland gardens to find out about SWAF. Our bears and soft animals had an adventure with Edward Bear while we were exploring. Here are some of our thoughts when we got back to school.

I liked finding the clues. Caitlin

I liked finding out about SWAF. Animals need Shelter, Water, Air and Food. Orla

We made islands with lots of different natural materials that you would find in the woods and string and flags. We put the flags next to the SWAF things for the animals.  It was really good because I have never been to Dawyck Gardens before. Jade

We found out that SWAF means four different things that all creatures that live need. Shelter, Water, Air and Food.  And I got to meet my Dad because he works at Dawyck. Thomas

I liked meeting Edward the bear. He was huge. Sebastian

I liked when we got to make the islands. We found an arched twig and made it into a rainbow.  And I made a tree which would give the animals shelter.  Sadie

My favourite part was finding out about Edward and SWAF. It was nice and sunny that day. Jacob

We made little islands out of things we found in the forest for a little bear. It was fun. Bebe

We played a game and it was about somebody chopping down trees and the bears needed the trees for shelter so the bears had to scare the woodcutter away. It was really really fun. Holly

We met Edward the bear. He was soft. We all loved him. Jaime
