We have been learning about microorganisms. This week we did an experiment with yeast. Here is the information if you want to do the experiment at home.
Resources:
-
Small bottle (with lid)
-
10g fresh or dried yeast
-
30ml warm water
-
10g sugar
-
Thermometer
-
Balloon
Activity:
Yeast is a living organism that needs food (carbohydrate) and oxygen to respire. This can be demonstrated using simple materials.
- Warm the water to around 38°C (check with a thermometer).
- Pour the water into the bottle.
- Add the yeast and sugar.
- Secure the lid and shake the bottle to mix the contents.
- Remove the lid and stretch a balloon over the neck of the bottle.
- Put this in a warm place.
- Observe the bottle over the next hour. The balloon should slowly inflate.
It was so cool
We’re going to do this at home this weekend!
