Tuesday 5th May

Language

Here are the correct version of this week’s spelling words

accommodation, achieve, business, conscious, existence, immediately knowledge, occurred, separate, tomorrow.

You have many options to practice them today – write them out, type them, paint them, draw them, dance them, write a song for them, hunt for them in a book.

French

Today is numbers 21-50 and there is another EPIC song

Watch and revise these numbers. You should notice some patterns such as using numbers 1-9 over and over again, and the use of the word “et” for and.

Can you create your own French (or another language) song to help us remember the numbers? Send me any you make.

Main task

Comprehension – remember what we have learned about finding answers by scanning for key words, writing in full answers with words from the question and using “quotes” from the text to prove what you are saying.

Today’s comprehension is about a cooking recipe for “spuds”.

After, why not have a go at cooking the recipe.

We are going to start a new class reading book called “holes”. Watch this short video and then tomorrow, we will read this part of the book together and compare and contrast them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwzUXN9OhSY

you could take notes about what happens in the video

maths

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Daily 10 – have a go at some daily 10 challenges. You could try one topic and start at level 1 and see how far up the levels you can get. Or you could choose one topic and level and start with a long period of time and make the time per question shorter and shorter to see how quickly you can do it.

Fractions work

The bottom number in a fraction shows how many the whole thing is cut up into. For example, if the bottom number is a 3, that means that the whole thing (e.g. pizza, number, distance) has been cut into 3.

The top number tells you how many pieces you have. For example, 1/3 means that the whole thing has been cut into 3 pieces and that you have 1 of them. 2/3 means you have two of them and 3/3 means you have 3 (all) of them.

If you have done this Fractions work before, here is a separate worksheet!

***Don’t forget about tomorrow’s sumdog competition at 11am. Who is going to win this week?***

Monday 4th May

This week’s spelling words are words that are commonly misspelled. There are two options – guess which one you think is correct and then check them to see if you are correct. You can check using the internet or a dictionary. Test someone else at home or test your friends to see if they can spell them correctly!

accommodation     or             accomodation

        achieve           or                     acheive

buisness                   or                     business

conscious                 or                     concious

existance         or             existence

immediately           or             immediatly

knowlege                or             knowledge

occurred          or             occured

seperate          or             separate

tomorrow                or             tommorrow

You can also write each word out and write the rule for that word e.g. 2 Cs, 1 M, no e

Modern langauges

This week, we will revise numbers in French, or another language if you want to learn.

Start with 0-20. This song is EPIC. We all know it and love it. Give it a listen, then try a French numbers game.

Main task

Today, we are going revise some punctuation. Inverted commas are also called speech marks. Inverted means turned inside out or turned backwards.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zmwqtfr/articles/zbkkkmn

Watch these videos and then try the task. You can then open a reading book and have a look at how the author uses speech marks. Sometimes they break up the sentences with words between the speech, even though the person is speaking in one continuous sentence.

For example

“Quickly” Mum said “before it gets dark”.

We are also working on reading for an extended period of time. This will be particularly useful during lockdown as it takes your mind off other things. Why not try and read your favourite book/magazine/website for 20 minutes today without getting distracted.

Maths

Remember the nrich factors game? This really helps us to understand multiplying, dividing and number patterns. Have 5 goes and see how long a chain you can make. ***don’t google answers!***

We are going to recap some information on fractions which we started a few weeks ago.

A fraction is a piece of something, just like a decimal. It is a number which is between 0 and 1.

However, unlike a decimal, a fraction can also be a whole number – this is when the top number (numerator) and bottom number (denominator) are the same.

e.g. 2/2            4/4           7/7           100/100

This website is excellent at explaining what a fraction is and each page has 10 questions at the bottom. Read through the website and try the questions to check your understanding.

Spelling test – get someone at home or contact someone from the class and test them on this week’s spelling words.

Get someone to test yourself.

Corryvreckan, Islay, Ecclefechan, Cairngorms, Glenshee, Ailsa Craig, Scapa Flow, Hebrides, Bealach na Ba.

Main task

Read the following passage about Earthworms.

We focus and work very hard on writing detailed, full answers for comprehension, however, for this, you only need to write short answers that have the correct detail. Don’t worry about words from the question, just find the correct answer and write that. It’s good practice, because sometimes you need to do this.

complete the comprehension questions.

Maths

We are all familiar with the “DAILY 10” maths resource and now would be a great time to use it. You can do one everyday and this will really help you keep your mental maths skills up. This is also a great chance for you to compete with your family. You could also make a spreadsheet to record your scores over time and see if you can improve!

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

here is an example of a table

Date Level Topic score
28.04.20 4 Fractions 8/10
29.04.20 4 Fractions 9/10
30.04.20 5 Fractions 5/10
1.05.20 5 Fractions 6/10

I also encourage you to have another go at this game. Think carefully about the choices you make about yourself and how these will affect your choices in the game.

https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/students/students-8-12/the-budget-game/

Main task

Speak to someone at home about planning a weekly shop. Sit down and plan all the meals you will need to eat, all the snacks you need, any household items you need to stock up on (e.g. cleaning products) and anything else you need to buy.

Make a list of all the ingredients and things you need to buy.

Estimate how much you think this will cost. If you can, have a discussion about the budget for this shopping and if there are any decisions to make about specific products e.g. buying cheaper or more expensive ones, then discuss them.

Things to discuss:

How would this shopping list be different for the following people:

  • An elderly couple
  • A single man
  • A family of 2 adults and 5 children

Did you use a comparison website to check costs in different shops, or do you have a shop you like and use all the time?

Are there any special offers currently that you could take advantage of when planning your shopping?

Did you have money to buy luxury or treat items, or are you sticking to a budget and only buying things you need?

***Don’t forget, tomorrow is the weekly sumdog competition – 11am for one hour. Who will take the title this week? ***

Language

This week’s spelling words are based on Scottish places and landmarks.

Corryvreckan, Islay, Ecclefechan, Cairngorms, Glenshee, Ailsa Craig, Scapa Flow, Hebrides, Bealach na Ba.

Google these places and find out more about what they are and why they are important areas in Scotland’s culture, history and daily life.

Handwriting/typing

Keep up your practice handwriting by writing out your spelling words in sentences or writing out some text from a book. You can also spend some time on typeracer or BBC Dancemat to improve your typing.

If you would like some fancy handwriting practice, watch this video and give it a go!

This week we are going to focus on money. We are going to look at adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing money, as well as budgeting and shopping.

Warm up

Have a go at this game to practice adding simple money amounts as well as making budgeting decisions.

http://flash.topmarks.co.uk/4020

This game below is also excellent for practicing budgeting – spend some time exploring the game and try doing it a couple of times, with different decisions at the start to see how it affects your spending choices.

https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/students/students-8-12/the-budget-game/

Main task

During the lockdown, we need to plan our weekly shopping so that we are minimising our contact in shops. This is a great opportunity for us to plan what we need for our household for a week and to explore how much these items cost and where is the cheapest place to buy them.

Guess how much you think each item on the list below costs, then check online to see how much they are in real life. Extra Challenge – work out the difference between your guess and the real cost, as well as the total cost of your guess and actual total cost.

Item Guess Actual cost
2L milk
Loaf of brown bread
Bag of potatoes
500g mince
Whole chicken
3 peppers

Tin of chopped tomatoes
1kg bag of rice
500g salted butter
Pack of jaffa cakes
4 yoghurts
500g cheese

Have a go at this punctuation game.

It’s Friday so why not do a home made spelling test with this week’s spelling words or modern language words.

Main task

Reading can be a great distraction at the moment. We have been working on extended reading this year, so it would be a great time to practice this today and take our mind off the current situation.

The key to extended reading is to get rid of all distractions and get everything you need so there is no reason for you to stop.

Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down, get a drink and snack, choose a book or website that you want to read about for a while. Put away all other distractions and read. Let’s see how well you can focus on reading for an extended period of time.

Bronze – 15 minutes

Silver – 25 minutes

Gold -35 minutes

Platinum -45 minutes

UBER PLATINUM – 1 hour+

For an extra challenge, write a summary about what you read or talk to someone else about it, explaining the main details.

Maths

Warm up = create your own fraction wall out of coloured paper (or white paper coloured in) or you can do it digitally.

Take strips of paper 24 cm long and split them into equal pieces to represent the following fractions

One whole

Halves

Thirds

Quarters

Sixths

Eighths

Extra challenge:

Twelfths

Twenty fourths

Teachers FRACTION WALL - Learn About Fractions - Early Years ...

Main task

Use your fraction wall to write the biggest fraction from each of these lists

  • ½              ¾             2/3
  • 2/8         2/4           ¾
  • 1/6        2/3           7/8

Anagrams are words that have the letters jumbled up.

For example, which animal is this = SROHE

Work out the multiple anagrams of these letters. There is a clue to help you with each one.

Writing

Persuasive writing is when you choose an opinion and argue why it is correct. We have worked a lot on debates and discussions this year and the kind of language you need to use to help persuade people that you are correct.

You also need to include facts and examples to prove what you are saying. If you can explain why the other side is wrong as well, this is also very helpful.

Today, you are going to write out your argument for the following:

“Which super power would be better – being able to fly or being able to stop time.”

Explain which you would like and why and explain why it would be better/more useful than the other super power.
