Bugs

Here is a few things you could try this week. We hope you have fun. If you try any let us know in the comments below. 🙂

You could have lots of fun making bugs with playdough. Have lots of fine creating different bugs you could count how many legs each of your bugs have.

Here is a link to a ladybird number bond playdough mat. Give the lady bird spots using playdough.

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-n-2074-number-bonds-to-ten-ladybird-playdough-mat

Here is a link to some minibeast playdough mats where you make legs, wings etc for the minibeasts.

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-m-262-minibeast-playdough-mats

Mrs Adair was very creative with her playdough look at the bugs she created. Can you name the colours in the caterpillar? How many spots does the ladybird have?

Here a video of Miss Hill making playdough bugs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpjyQym8cmg&feature=youtu.be

Some of the ladies myself included had lots of fun creating some soap snakes. It is very easy to do. All you need is a bottle, a sock and a dish of fairy liquid and water and maybe an elastic band to secure the sock. Have a look at the video of Miss Hill making her soap snake. Mrs Russell had lots of fun too and even enlisted the help of her daughter.

Here is a link to Miss Hill shows you how to make one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOVOSTcvkck&feature=youtu.be

We have also been collecting sticks when out and about on our daily walk to create some frames. I collected some from the Dean Park and here’s the video giving examples.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82KLJvijY-0&feature=youtu.be

Mrs Adair made a fabulous frame from sticks.

Mrs Miller made a wonderful frame using the foliage from her garden.

We like cookery in the Sunflowers class and have been developing our spreading skills. You could continue this by making a sandwich for your lunch. Help to spread the butter on the bread and then add a filling of your choice. Some of us like ham, some like cheese and some even like both. Place the second piece of bread on top them use the knife to cut into halves or quarters.

Massages

Hi , can I suggest to look up some hand massages on YouTube there are short clips that cover a simple massage, just take your time gently opening up the palms of the hands. It can be a gentle moment of communication through touch.

I recommend a hand bath first depending on your goal use a mild soap. A citrus scent wakes up and vitalises  or for a relaxing massage; just before bedtime for example use a baby-sleep bath or a lavender/ camomile or stay neutral with no scents.

This is the same for any oils and or lotion scents.

Bubble Snake Blower!

As part of our Jungle Book theme, this week I thought you could have fun with a home science experiment where you recreate Kaa from the film 🐍

All you need is a plastic bottle, a sock, water and fairy liquid, which I’m sure you all have in the house.

1. Cut the bottom off of your plastic bottle with some scissors ✂

2. Pull a sock over the bottom of the bottle and secure it with an elastic band or bobble 🧦

3. Mix water and fairy liquid to create a bubble mixture 💧

4. Dip your sock covered bottle into the bubble mixture.

5. Blow through the top of the bottle.

Have lots of fun making bubble snakes! How long a snake can you make? If you wish, make a few bubble snake blowers and have a race with your family.

Just a reminder that these activities are just ideas but if you wish to take part and send a photograph or a comment along then I’d love to see it.

PS. I will be back in touch with families this week for a quick phone call so I look forward to having a catch up with you all 🙂

Let’s Get Busy Oak Team

Well Oak team, here is another week of activities for you all to try out at home.  You are under no obligation to complete, however if you do please leave a comment as we would love to know how you are and if you are enjoying your activities.

I haven’t had any song requests yet, for a new dance.  You must have a favourite song you would like to dance to!

Let’s get started with your activities for the week.

Art:

Shadow Drawing

What do I need? – Chalk, sun and a partner

There has to be more sunshine this week, so get out into the garden.  If you have chalk, choose someone in your family to stand and create their shadow.  With help draw around their shadow and reveal their outline!  If you do not have chalk get some paper, pencil and a toy and draw round the shadow of your chosen toy. Who does this shadow look like?

Lockdown Rainbow

What do I need? – Paint, sticks, paper, paint brushes, (frame is optional)

Again on your daily walk or in your garden can you find more sticks. You could make a stick rainbow picture and put it in a frame as ‘Lockdown’ 2020 keepsake.  I will post a finished picture of ours once it is complete but here it is so far;

Literacy:

Disappearing Words

What do I need? – Chalk, garden hose / squirty bottle and water

Get an adult to write some sight or tricky words on the ground.  The adult will shout out a word and you have to identify the correct word and then use your hose or water bottle to make the words disappear. The words can be names of people in your family, people in school, everyday words that you use or hear (bed, toilet, drink, food, etc)

Numeracy:

Family Bingo

What do I need? – paper, pens, YouTube and your family

If you do not have bingo cards at home, get an adult to put 12 numbers on a piece of paper, (numbers range from 1-90). Get everyone in your family to play, everyone needs a card, then use YouTube bingo caller for the numbers.

Choose a prize before you start the game and see who wins!

Cooking:

Breakfast Meal– What do you like to eat for breakfast? Cereal? Toast? Eggs?

Every morning this week try and get your own breakfast, on Monday you need help from an adult but maybe by Friday you can do most of it by yourself.

Think about what you need, bowl, plate, spoon, knife, bread or milk.

Here are some faces you will recognise, this is what they like for breakfast;

Life Skills:

Each week you will have a different focus, this week we would like you to  concentrate on making your bed.

IDL – Can you look around your house or garden and find things that could make a den / tent.  If you have a tent, put it up in the garden this week and have fun in it.

Music – I hope you are all still singing and signing, each week we will have a different singing hands song to focus on.  Find their videos on Youtube and get the family all taking part. From the singing bag a new song will be revealed each week. This week we are going to be singing, Million Dreams! Have fun!

Class pet update – Butterflies

All five not so little caterpillars are  doing well, they have almost ate all their food now! They are getting so big, I think it may be time for the next stage of their life cycle! They look as though they are about to get comfy, stop eating and hang on the lid to spin themselves into chrysalis. Once they are in this comfy cocoon this is where they transform into beautiful butterflies.  I wonder what colour they will be? Have you made you butterfly pictures and guessed their colour yet? I wonder if anyone will get it right!

Weekly Home Learning (3)

Hello, everyone.

One of our favourite things to do in the Beech class is to read a story together.  We have even participated in an SQA unit that is based around exploring fictional stories and the characters within them.

We choose a book for us all to read and offered some suggestions of activities to try out! The fun activities will be based on the main character of the story!  This week’s story is called ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae – you may have heard of it!

Have a listen to the story HERE then, if you like, try out some of the activities below! Feel free to post any photos or comments on this blog to let us know how you got on. 😊

Task 1. Explore heights using non-standard units!

*Activity recommended if you have a garden* Giraffes can grow to be about 19ft tall! To see what that looks like, mark out a starting point at one end of your garden and take 19 (count out loud together!) steps in a straight line and mark the point where you finish.  Take a step back and check roughly how tall a giraffe is! If you enjoyed this, why not find out the height of other animals in the story and compare their sizes!

Task 2. Check out a LIVE FEED from a real zoo.  Here are some links to zoos that have cameras in their giraffe enclosures. Look at how the giraffes move.  What are they getting up to?  What kind of food do they eat?

San Diego Safari Park, USA

Greenville Zoo, S.A, USA

Folly Farm, Wales, UK

Task 3.  Become a researcher! Work with an adult to find out the answer to the following questions that you might on an animal fact file:

  • How tall to giraffe’s grow?
  • What colour is a giraffe’s tongue?
  • What colour is a giraffe’s skin?
  • Do all giraffe’s look the same or different?

Task 4. The word ‘giraffe’ begins with the letter ‘G’.  Here is a fun craft activity you could try that lets you explore both the letter ‘G’ and a giraffe pattern.

G Is For Giraffes" Letter G Craft Kit | Abc Book | Letter G Crafts ... Templates can be found online.

*Bonus literacy task* – Why not have a ‘G’ scavenger hunt?  How many things can you find around the house that begin with the letter ‘G’?

Task 5. Life-skills, sensory and fun!

Here is a link to a zoo animal game on Twinkl which you can download and play.  How many animals did you guess right?

Here is a link to the wonderful Singing Hands duo, Tracy and Suzanne.  They are reading and signing the story ‘1, 2, 3 To the Zoo’ by Eric Carle.  Have a listen and try to count how many giraffes you can see!

Below are links to playdough recipes.  Work together to make the dough then try to roll out the different shapes of a giraffe.  E.g. A round body, a long sausage-shaped neck and long thin legs.

Non-edible – https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe

Edible – https://rainydaymum.co.uk/how-to-make-edible-playdough/#wprm-recipe-container-28288

Remember – all activities are simply suggestions and completely non-obligatory.

Take care, guys 😊  Missing you all.

Pupil update

One of our young people in the Stars class has been working hard at home using his standing frame.  How tall is he?

His wonderful sister also created an NHS superhero, which was shared online by the Pride of Britain!

Thank you for all your updates and photos.   You can send yours here.

Star Bakers

We love to bake different cakes and tasty treats during our cooking sessions at school.  🧁
All the boys in the Daisies class have been working hard to measure out cups of ingredients with support, count the cups as they’re added to a bowl, and have been doing well to mix ingredients together independently.

Why not bake a cake with your family and show off your baking skills! You can comment a photo of our finished bake, or let us know what you made.

Collect the ingredients you need.

  Measure out ingredients with support.

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.

Put your cake in the oven with help from an adult.

Miss Wilson has made a tasty Banana loaf. She made sure she had all of her ingredients ready, followed the recipe to mix them together in a bowl, then put the cake in the oven to bake. Doesn’t it look yummy?

Somewhere over the Rainbow….

Good morning Pine Class!

How are you all?

Have you been outside in your gardens listening to the birds? Jardine has and  she managed to photograph a Blue Tit that has taken up residence in the  bird box in her garden – amazing!!

!

What about feeding the Birds? Aitken has been doing that and made some lovely feeders – Well done Aitken give yourself a Clap!!

Below is a link of some lovely bird feeders – if you would like to make one and then watch some happy birds in your garden. 🐦

https://www.bakerross.co.uk/craft-ideas/category/teachers/occasions-teachers/national-nest-box-week-occasions-teachers/?fbclid=IwAR2W7DkrRPSOZetoVM6qS-688jeiTMj3voEdbbcr4s5mfb4hDyXjwg-gs0s

Boyle has been reading her cookery books in the sunshine, looking for some inspiration – she would love to know what you have all been reading?

Birdie Meatballs anyone?

I have made some Rainbow Birds from scraps of fabric I had left – what is your favourite colour?

Has anyone watched Mary Poppins? Did you have a favourite song?🌂

And did any of you enjoy the silly parrot and the Birdie Song?🐤

Our topic this Term was going to be Open Season – but due to the current situation we have had a wee rethink and decided to have some small topics that run over a week or two… or five!!!

Remember just do what you want to do and if you want to revisit any of the topics or ideas please do so – and post some comments and sent in some photos – we would love to hear from you all and see your lovely smiley faces!!!

Out in the Garden 🦋🐌🐛🐞

During Morning Group, we look out the window or door and check the weather, we then look at the BBC Weather to see if they got it right?  We like to sing and sign  ‘What’s the Weather like Today’  – sing along!! ⛅⛈🌤

See the source image

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUSbazn3STo

Next is a link to Mr Tumble singing and signing some songs about the weather.

Also, if you look up Singing Hands you can see them signing individual signs for different  weather.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t9Tt_JlYd8

So what is the Weather like today?

If you are out in the garden or on a walk look and see if any rainbows appear! 🌈🌈

Or some Highland Cows!!!

🐂🐂🐂🐂

Can’t wait to see a photo of the calf.

In class we have Sensory bottles for each different type of weather – these are really easy to make – plastic bottles, buttons, beads, water beads, Hama beads, elastic bands, food colouring, cotton wool, sequins are just a few things you can use. Below is a link to some ideas if you would like to make your own.

Art and Games🌈

This morning I have been watching the news and a feature I really enjoyed was about the ‘Posties’ – our local Postmen and Postwomen have been extremely  busy just now!! My Postman is actually my friend Andy, and I have known him for about 30years, so when I bake I always bake for him too!! Lots of children have been putting thank you pictures and messages on their doors, and some have been playing games with their Postie, such as Noughts and Crosses – where you put the grid on your door fill in a square the Postie has a shot and this goes on over a couple of days until someone wins!!! What do you think!! If you have a game, leave a note or make a picture send us a photo – and it will make your Postie SMILE!!!

Cookery🍵

Now the weather, sadly according to the BBC Weather is going to be a wee bit colder and rainy over the next couple of days, so what about making a pot of soup?  You probably have a favourite but below is a link to some different soups which you may want to try?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/collections/easy_soup

When making your soup🍵

  • Talk about the colours of the vegetables and sign them too!

ttps://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=makaton+signs+of+colour&docid=608037682251761155&mid=2E87473E21141D49B7432E87473E21141D49B743&view=detail&FORM=VIRE

  • Listen to the noises of the vegetables being peeled and chopped.
  • Smell the vegetables.
  • Taste some of the vegetables raw, if you can.🥕
  • Can you hear the soup bubbling as it is cooking?
  • What does your cooked soup smell and taste like?
  • Remember help with the cleaning up if you can!!!
