P5 Learn About our Right of the Month!

We have been studying our Article of the Month through our work on Rights Respecting Schools ;

“Article 7 (Registration, name, nationality, care): All children have the right to a legally registered name, officially recognised by the government”.

In class we discussed the importance of our names and how it is personal to each and every individual. Unfortunately, we know that in many places in the world some children are not given this right and we spoke about how this might make us feel.

Together, we spoke about the stories of how we got our names and designed a name badge that was personal to us.

The children have been set the task to ask at home if there was a particular reason they were given their name. We are also going to try and find out when our birth’s were officially registered.

I’m excited to see what you discover!

“You have the right to a name, and this should be officially recognised by the Government. You have the right to a nationality (to belong to a country).”

We will be learning a lot this coming month about the importance of Article 7.

Why not share your learning with someone at home?

Playground Toy Amnesty

Throughout the rest of this session, we would like to add to the playground toys we have in our playground shed so that pupils have a greater variety of activities to take part in at breaktimes and lunchtimes. Before we start to purchase new equipment, we would ask any pupils and families, who have equipment/toys they have finished with or grown out of and which are still in good condition, to donate them to the school so that others can also have fun and enjoyment with them. Any donations would be very welcome from Monday, 15th January. Here we can see Max, Harris, Jamie and Noah from P1 having a first shot on our new table tennis table which was donated to the school by Mr and Mrs Hettrick and the new equipment bag containing a net, bats and balls donated by the GFG and ordered for us by Mrs. Montgomery. We cannot thank you all enough. The boys had great fun!!! Other stages within the school can look forward to getting a turn very soon!!

P5a Enjoy the Frosty Weather!

This afternoon P5 enjoyed being outside completing the daily 15 around the playground. The children have really been challenging themselves with fitness. Keep working towards your targets p5!

Calling all gardeners

Gargieston PS and ECC is currently creating a pizza garden to grow vegetables and herbs with the pupils. This is part of the Food For Thought programme which encourages sustainability, buying local and growing your own vegetables.  To get the project up and running before the winter sets in, the school is looking for any volunteers who may have some time to spare to help with tidying up some flower beds and moving composting material. It does not matter if you have any garden knowledge – on-site training will be given! Please contact the school for further details and we look forward to seeing you in the garden.

Monday’s Circle Assembly

At Monday’s Circle Assemblies, Mrs. Wright and Mrs. McLaughland consulted all the pupils on Gargieston’s Curriculum. That means thinking about the things we learn in school and what we want to learn more or less of. We considered the things we think it is important for us to learn and the things we learn in Gargieston that makes our school special. Every circle group made a poster to illustrate  our thinking and share our opinions.                                       Article 12 of the UNCRC says :-                                                                                            Every child has the right to have a say in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously

Ayrshire Schools Swimming Championship

Well done to Alistair, Sam, Jess, Orla and Ryan who took part in this event on Saturday.  Lots of PB’s and congratulations to Sam for placing 5th in the 50m freestyle with a time that should qualify him for the Scottish Schools Swimming Championship.

P4A Choose Kindness

In P4A we were discussing what kindness means to us.  We believe that when you are kind, you make the world a happier, safer place.  Have a look at our photos to see what kindness means to us, sharing a smile with each other and words that show we think mean kindness and caring for others.
