Show Racism The Red Card

This afternoon, as part of our Rights Respecting Schools developments, we had a short P4-7 assembly to explore the issue of racism which also launched a creative competition as part of Racism the Red Card.

The children has lots of creative ideas for what they could work  on in their classes which could be submitted as part of the competition.

Here is the powerpoint that was shown today and details of the competition which might be informative for parents and a helpful recap for pupils.

Rights Respecting Schools Raffle

Last week, for P4-7,  there was a Rights Respecting Schools raffle. This was a great opportunity to revisit and revise all the Articles of the UNCRC that we have looked at since last March when we returned to school from lockdown. Everyone took up to a maximum of 3 pieces of paper and wrote their name, the number of an Article of the UNCRC they could remember and a description of what that article was about. In each class, these papers were put into a tub and, on Friday afternoon,  winners from each class were drawn from all the entries. The winners were:-                                                                                     P4A – Rose Slater, Rachel Gray                                                                                   P4B – Poppy Jupp, Isla Clarke (photo above)                                             P4C – Amy Elder, Grace Boyce                                                                                   P5A – Finlay McPhail, Bobby Cowan                                                                     P5B – Callie Parker, Lauren Rankin                                                                           P6A – Emma Wright, Luke Roxburgh                                                                      P6B – Ellie McLatchie, Anaya Rana, Pip Newlands                                          P7A – Elliot Ferrie, Harvey Dow, Nina Bednarek                                             P7B – Phoebe Dunlop, Lucy Cowley

The winners received prizes of stationery. As part of their prize, most of the winners received a sharpener in the shape of a globe of the world. This is to remind us all that we are all Global Citizens and that the Rights contained in the UNCRC are for all children in the world. It is also a reminder of how lucky we are since, in some poorer countries of the world, it can be difficult for children to have all their Rights.

Here you can also see 3 of our Pledge Trees with Articles we have looked at all around. There are 4 Pledge trees in the school corridor, one for each House – red, blue, green and yellow. Each year group within the school put their thumbprint on the trees in a different shade of their House colour. All teaching and non-teaching staff have added their thumbprint too to show that we have ALL signed up to the Rights within the UNCRC – the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.                                                                A huge thank you to Mrs. Wallace, our of our parents, who sketched out the shape of the trees for us.                                                         The UNCRC is posted below which you can discuss with your parents at home.

One Kind Word – Anti-Bullying Week

This week is Anti-Bullying Week. At Monday’s assemblies we focused on the theme for this year which is One Kind Word. Kindness is one of our school values and, as we all know, kindness has never been more important.                                                                                  At the P4-7 assembly we looked at different scenarios and, in each of them, what we could do in each situation to be kind and supportive towards others. We all know that Anti-Bullying Week is for every week!!                                                                                                                      On Tuesday, to show our support for Anti-Bullying Week children wore odd socks to school. As you can see from these photographs, it made for a very colourful display!!                                                                             In the last 2 photographs, can you match the pupil to the socks??

…….and more achievements!

What a week for amazing achievements by our Gargieston pupils. Zoe Brown from P4A also took part in the 2K Hallowe’en race at the weekend to raise money for Cancer Research.                                                  Corey Hudson, also in P4A, did a charity run in aid of the Crosshouse Hospital Children’s Fund.                                                                                       Very well done! We are very proud of you both.

COP 26 Poster Task

A big thank you to Tracy Smith, the community champion at the big Tesco store, who was willing to have a display in the store of more of our COP 26 poster designs.. That means we now have  a display at both Morrisons and Tesco.  These displays showcase the concerns the pupils at Gargieston have about the issue of Climate Change and the hopes our children have for success at the conference. It is great to see the thoughts and opinions of our pupils being taken out into the community.

At Monday’s assembly, the new Article of the Month was introduced. It is:-

Article 23                                                                                                                                     If you have a mental or physical disability, you should get the education, care and support you need to lead a full and independent life to the best of your ability.

Please discuss and share your thoughts about this Article together at home.

COP 26 Climate Change Poster Display

The current UNCRC Article of the Month is

Article 29

I have the right to an education which develops my personality, respect for others’ rights and the environment.

With the COP 26 Conference just around the corner and climate change being a big issue for children all around the world, we have  been focusing on the environment aspect of this Article. Children have been completing a homework task based on this theme:-

One change that you feel people should make to help save the Earth.

Some of the children’s posters which express their views are now displayed at the entrance to Morrison’s Supermarket in Kilmarnock and will remain there throughout the time of the COP 26 conference. We hope you can pop in, take a look and find out about the issues that matter to the children of Gargieston.

Well done to everyone who took part in this worthwhile task.

Class Charters

As part of our Rights Respecting Schools work, every class has put together a class charter. In this way each class has  established  a  whole class agreement on shared values and relationships for a Rights Respecting classroom which is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).                                                                     So that families can share in what we have been doing, here are some photographs of our class charters.                                                                               P1

Charity Fundraiser

Well done to Dylan Grieve, P7A who has been raising money for the charity, Diabetes UK. During lockdown, Dylan was given the home learning task of making a bookmark. He  enjoyed doing this so much that he decided to make them for friends and family, selling them to make money for charity. So far he has donated £75 to Diabetes UK.

As a diabetic himself, it is lovely that he is raising money for charity and supporting others with the same condition. Dylan received a gold card this week, earning 100 points for the Red House.

As the lead for Rights Respecting Schools within Gargieston, this makes me very proud !!

Well done, Dylan

Take Away Theatre Company

On Thursday P4-7 very much enjoyed “Takeaway Theatre Company’s “ performance of “Hope”. This play told the story of a successful pop star returning to the town where she grew up for the first time in years. A chance encounter takes place between her and a girl from her old school. Through flashback, we learned about Hope’s painful childhood memories and the systematic abuse and bullying she suffered at the hands of this troubled girl. The performance addressed some complex issues ranging from verbal, physical, emotional and cyber bullying to the impact of a difficult home life which some children experience. The play was performed with humour but was also very thought provoking. Feedback from the children about the play and the follow up interactive workshop was overwhelmingly positive. This initiative, paid for from Christmas Fayre money, fitted well with our Health and Wellbeing School Improvement priority of addressing children’s mental wellbeing.
