P7 French Day

On Monday 21st March, Primary 7 were treated to a full day of fun French activities at Dalbeattie High School as part of our transition work.

We had 4 different activities to take part in. They were:

  1. Au Voleur! (Catch the thief) – an activity that took us all around the school searching for clues, written on the classroom doors in French, to help us find the missing objects.
  2. L’animal imaginaire (Imaginary animals) – we had to create an imaginary animal and label it using our knowledge of French vocabulary.
  3. Les jeux de société (Board Games) – we played a variety of games which tested our French vocabulary.
  4. Des chansons, et jeux actives (songs and active games) – we sang and practiced lots of songs in preparation for our performances to the parents in the afternoon.

We all had a brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious French breakfast of hot chocolate and croissants at break time.

Thank you Mrs Kinghorn!!

Primary 3/4 Viking Visit

Viking Visit

P3/4 go back in time with the Vikings!

Exclusive By Riley Porter

Last Thursday P3/4 had an exciting Viking visit. When we opened the door we were met by funny Vikings. Some of us got to dress up as people in the story Simon told us. He also told us about lifestyle in Viking times.  A corner of the classroom was turned into a Viking home.  Later on we pretended to row a long ship to raid other countries. Mrs Anderson split the class into three groups of seven. The first group got to play Viking chess.  Next we got to talk to Simon.  He told us about how the Vikings weighed the silver to see if it was the same weight as what the other Viking had to get it.  Some of the people got to blow the horn and lie in the bed.  After that we went to see Eric.  He told us about how the Vikings made things out of wood and showed us some of his tools to carve wood.  Last of all we went down to the field and they had a battle with all of their weapons.  We were all gripped with fear and excitement. It was a fantastic day.

P7 High School Transition

This term Primary 7 have been taking part in some transition sessions with Mr Bremner, Mr Donnelly and Miss Stewart from the High School.

Mr Bremner has been teaching probability in maths. We have had a great time sorting skittles and working out the probability of choosing certain colours – we even got to eat them at the end!!!

With Mr Donnelly, we have been learning about the importance of shading and adding tone to our art work.

In Drama, Miss Stewart played some really funny warm up games with us. We loved playing the stage direction game as well as some of the concentration games. In the last session we worked on freeze frames for different scenarios. It was really goof fun!!

P7 Rugby

For the last 4 weeks, both Primary 7 classes have been taking part in a block of tag rugby with John Muir.  During the first couple of weeks we took part in a variety of games which helped us to develop our rugby skills and understand the flow of the game better e.g. remembering to always pass backwards and using all the spaces on the pitch. Miss Clendinning was very impressed with how quickly we managed to build up our skills enough to play some short games.

P5D Win Shield at the Music Festival

We were extremely proud of all Primary 5D pupils who performed in the Dumfries and District Music Festival on Friday. The class have loved receiving instruction with playing the ukulele from Mr Butterworth every fortnight.  Mrs Dyson would like to thank Mr and Mrs Butterworth for all their input and support. The class enthusiastically performed “What shall we do with a ukulele?” and won the Ian Hart Shield and a Certificate of Commended Performance. The adjudicator commented: “You sang strongly and clearly throughout. Balance between the ukuleles and singing was always good. Strumming was largely rhythmic and chord changes were confident. Overall, an excellent approach resulting in an enjoyable performance.” We look forward to adding our engraving and displaying the shield. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Butterworth who also presented every pupil with a special medal when coming off stage – a wonderful momento of our performance!

P5 Visit RSPB Mersehead

Primary 5 enjoyed a great day visiting RSPB Mersehead as part of their topic work  “Around Scotland”. We learned about the journey of Barney the Barnacle Goose as he made his way from Svalbard in the Arctic Circle to Mersehead. We collaborated in groups to create our own beach art using natural materials. We observed and identified a variety of birds. We also learned about the lifecycle of the rare Natterjack Toad which can also be found at Mersehead.
