Primary 4/5 Tall Ship Trip Glasgow

Primary 4/5 went on a trip to the Tall Ship in Glasgow. For our first workshop we had to be Marine Archaeologists – finding and identifying artefacts from Titanic.

On the second workshop, we looked at the 12 course menu which was served to First class passengers and created our own versions. We then had to work in groups to set the table for first class guests.

The final part of our trip involved an interesting tour of the ship Glenlee. We had a go at turning the wheel, ringing the bell and scrubbing the deck.

Thank you to the Tall ship staff and to all adult helpers on our trip.

P1F’s French Breakfast!

P1 have been learning about healthy eating this term and combined this with their French lessons.  We discussed the importance of breakfast and learned lots of food items in French.  We have been very keen following the visit of Madam Marolleau who just happened to bring some French fruit marmalade for us!  Take a look at all the yummy food we ate!!  Of course we had to ask for it in French!

Nursery News

Over the past two weeks while Miss Carson has been on her travels, Mrs Wixon has been in the nursery covering the topic of People Who Help Us.  After getting ideas from the children, we planned some fun filled activities together.

We focused on people who help us at home, in school and in the wider community.  We went on visits to the Health Centre and Post Office.  We also had a visit from the fire brigade, a first responder, a nanny and also some special people who help us in school.

We had some great learning experiences from this topic and would like to thank all of the people for helping us by telling us how they help other people.

Sparling Goes To School Part 2

Today we had a visit from Jack Wootton from Galloway Fisheries Trust with some real live Sparling! Our Primary 5 Class and Eco Group were very pleased to see the fish first hand. Jack was able to bring the pupils out in small groups to look at the fish close up in a bucket and he also lifted them out of the water briefly to see them from a side view. It was interesting to se how they were camouflaged from the top and that the female fish was bigger than the male due to the huge number of eggs which she carries. We heard more about the project being undertaken by Jack and he told us about the numbers of Sparling he had just recently found in the Cree River. We also got more of an understanding about how important this project is for Scotland. Today, a camera man came to film Jack talking to us. The footage will be used in a documentary highlighting the importance of the project and will be shared amongst wildlife experts at conferences and for use in further research work as a reference tool. Jack was very impressed with the amount of information Mrs Dyson’s Primary 5 class had retained from his last visit and with the sheer number of relevant questions the pupils were coming up with. Lots of hands kept going up, eager to know more!

France comes to Dalbeattie Primary!

Last week we were very lucky to have two French teachers in school.  Madam Marolleau and Nadège Bertin were hosted by Mrs Fitzsimmons and Mrs McLean as part of the Nancy-Metz partnership with our region.  Both teachers visited classes in the primary and secondary school, presented PowerPoints, answered numerous questions (in French and English!) joined in lessons and read stories in French!  They had a great week and thoroughly enjoyed their time with all the super pupils and were very impressed by all our work.  Fantastique!
