Open Day May 20th

Remember Saturday May 20th is fast approaching… Between 10am and 3pm on this date it will be our Open Day. To mark the final months in our current building we are hosting this event to mark and recognise the history of Dalbeattie Primary school on its current site.

On Saturday  20th May,  there will be one final doors open day which will take place in both the upper and lower school buildings. Visitors are welcome to visit Dalbeattie Primary School to reminisce, share memories and view the school as it is today. Doors will open at 10a.m and close at 3p.m . At 12 mid-day, we would like as many people as possible who have been pupils and staff at Dalbeattie Primary School (or indeed, the High School pre 1958) to join us in front of the bell tower for a large group photograph to mark the event.  It may even get us into the Record books for the most former pupils and staff in a picture SO KEEP THE DATE! The photo will be taken from the air by a licensed drone. Please note, however, all friends, members of the school and wider local community are welcome to visit the buildings at any point during the day. We are very happy to announce that Dalbeattie Lions Club is providing eco friendly balloons to be released on the day too, as part of the mid-day photo. These balloons which have been sourced from a company which avoids any issues for the environment, have a competition tag attached for the balloon which travels the furthest

Rotary Quiz

Well done to our P7 Rotary Quiz team who came third in the regional qualifying event held today at Troqueer Primary School. The team were the winners of our cluster heat and went on to represent the school in the regional event. It was a very close run contest and the team were just piped by half a mark. The team were fantastic representatives for the school and all those involved in supporting them are very proud of their achievements.

Code Club Celebration!

Congratulations to all our Code Clubbers this week! To celebrate learning, we invited family members to our final Code Club session this term. Code Clubbers talked confidently about the animations and games they had created using their coding skills. Certificates were awarded to all, including  Mr Muirhead who has been a great help at our Code Club. Miss Purdie, Development Officer, joined us to make a short movie about our Code Club. She is hoping to use this to show other schools how much fun Code Club is and hopefully encourage them to start one too!  I would like to thank all parents who joined us today in this celebration. It has been a delight to run Code Club this year and work with such an enthusiastic and motivated group of pupils. Well done everyone!   Mrs Dyson

Speech Festival

Well done to all the boys and girls who took part in the Dumfries Music and Speech Festival yesterday. The children all performed their poems very well and were a credit to the school. Each section had a significant increase in entries this year and the standards from all competitors was very high. All participants received feedback from the judge on the day. Well done to all those who achieved places within their section.

Science club (week 2)Water, fire, ping pong balls…..and eggs?

img_0276img_0283img_0285img_0287img_0290img_0275

This week we were looking at physics.

We turned a bottle of water upside down with just a ping pong ball to hold the water back!

Using fire we tried to make tea bags float. We will repeat that experiment next week!

Using fire we tried to make hard boiled eggs pop into bottles. Some did, some didn’t…

How do you make water flow up from one bottle to another using play dough and a straw? The science club found out!

Science club (with Amir and Mrs Young).

Our new Science club enjoyed a fascinating hour with Amir, a trainee doctor, working on Chemistry experiments.

We made balloons blow up using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

There was elephant sized toothpaste produced in another experiment.

To finish off, the ‘Mentos  in a Coke bottle’ experiment was done outside just  in case …

Next week we hope to be doing some more exciting Physics experiments.

Code Club fun!

Our Code Clubbers enjoyed another busy session at Code Club this week. Keira, Aimee, Millie, Logan and Aaron used code to create their own ChatBot animations. Murdo, Orla and Heather were coding to create their own Dodgeball game. Our Micro:bits arrived so Orla and Heather also investigated how to make their own interactive badge using these pocket-sized computers! Mrs Duncan even popped in to play the animations and games. Mrs Dyson and Mr Muirhead are amazed each week with how well our Code Clubbers are collaborating and progressing. Well done everyone!
