Heughan Hall Naming Ceremony
On Tuesday 26th June, the Heughan Hall was officially opened. William Heughan, born 1886, is a former pupil of our school who became a world renowned opera singer. When he died at the age of 78, he had already set up the William Heughan Associated Special Trust (WHAST) to remember his beloved home town of Dalbeattie and to benefit the people therein. The fund still exists today and it is thanks to the vision of the current trustees, that a significant amount of money is being given, annually to Dalbeattie Learning Campus, to encourage musical activities. Recently, a William Heughan Choir has been established, led by Musical Director Kate Howard. This project is funded by the William Heughan Associated Special Trust and its trustees Malcolm and Jenny Heughan were present at the ceremony where we heard the newly formed choir perform for the first time to an audience of family, friends and invited guests. The event took the form of a few songs from the William Heughan Choir, some musical contributions from some of the school’s older pupils and a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the hall and to present the installation of new information storyboards about William Heughan. Malcolm and Jenny performed the actual cutting. After the ceremony, the choir and invited guests were treated to refreshments prepared and provided by the Hospitality Department of the High School.
Pupil Council Visit to Library
The School pupil Council has visited Dalbeattie Town Library to see the refurbishment and to see what is on offer for our young people. We were thrilled by the wonderful new children’s area. We found out about how we could become members to borrow books and about the reference collections which are a great resource for topic work. Mrs Howie was particularly excited to hear about the possibilities for classes to have visits to the library to do activities linked to their topics. Teachers will be getting information about this soon.
Consultation with Dalbeattie Tennis Club
On Wednesday 23rd of May, Dalbeattie Tennis club visited Dalbeattie Learning Campus. Keith Thom from the club and Amy Bradbury from Active Schools, spoke with some children from P1-S3 about all the great work that is going on at the Tennis Courts in Dalbeattie. The club wanted feedback from the children on what they want to see happening at the club. Well done and thank you to the Pupil Council from Dalbeattie Primary School and Murray, Ewan and Angus from Dalbeattie High School for your input.
Code Club Congratulations!
Well done to our returning Code Clubbers this term. They received certificates for their completion of Module 1 Code Club, while Aaron received his certificate for participation in Module 2. Family members attended our Celebration Event and enjoyed playing our finished games and watching our own creative animations.
Regional Gymnastics Competition
30 pupils from Dalbeattie Primary attended the regional gymnastics competition on Saturday 24th of February. The competition took place at Lockerbie Academy and was in two parts, vault and floor routine. Pupils had been working on both elements during afterschool clubs with Mrs Bradbury, Abi, Kerry and Mrs Duncan. The pupils all performed very well but faced strong competition on the day. Thank you to all those who gave up their time to organise and run the clubs. Thanks also to parents and grandparents for transporting pupils to the event and your support throughout the day.
Well done gymnasts.
Fairtrade Achiever Award Presentation with Eco Group and DHS Pupils
Today, we were delighted to have two representatives from Dalbeattie High School, along with our own Eco Group at a special presentation given by Mrs Dyson, our Primary 5 teacher. Mrs Dyson has been very busy, over the last few years, planning a range of Fairtrade activities with her Primary 5 class and eco group as part of our ‘Fairtrade Journey.’ Mrs Dyson first outlined the activities, comprising mainly of an audit of staff and pupils about Fairtrade products, which were undertaken to achieve the ‘Fair Aware’ award. She then explained the activities which followed before we were awarded the ‘Fair Active School’ award in 2015: presentation to local community and Fairtrade snacks at an afternoon tea amongst many others. Then in 2017, the school was awarded the ‘Fair Achiever’ award following still more activities which included a Fairtrade Breakfast and whole school assembly with a Fairtrade representative. Since then , the Primary 5 class has also organised a Fairtrade games afternoon and a Fairtrade morning break time staggered over two days and met with a company who supply Fairtrade school sweatshirts so that these can be offered also to parents to buy complete with school logo. This week finds us in DGlife as we prepare for our next Fairtrade Breakfast next week on Thursday 1st March. Thank you to all who have already shown support for this event by buying tickets and to the local businesses (Kinnairds, Co-op and Tesco) who are supporting us with donations of Fairtrade food items.
