What a week in Primary 1…

Literacy

This week in literacy we learned about the capital letter ‘W’, recapped some sounds we learned earlier and wrote about what we did on the weekend. The friendly Dragon received some nice letters from us, explaining what the fairy-tale “The three little pigs” is about – we are sure he loved them. Throughout the whole week, we have been covering our topic of fairy tales! Our teachers were very impressed with our book reports about our favourite fairy tale.

Numeracy

We have spent the week practising counting up and down from any number from 100, counting in 2’s,3’s, 5’s and 10’s and recognising numbers above 100. As well as that, we revised telling the time using an analogue and a digital clock and a little bit about sharing things equally.

Health and Wellbeing

This week is Health and Wellbeing week, and on Thursday it was outdoor classroom day. We spent the whole day learning outside – it was great fun! Also, on Tuesday, we had a Judo session in school! As well as that, we did some mindfulness and drawing.

Topic

As we mentioned above, our topic is Fairyland. Together, we discussed our ideas on how we think the castle in fairyland would look like and drew a picture along with it. We listened to the story “The three little pigs” and talked about how each character could have felt.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

P1 Teachers

We had a great week!

We had a great week! Our new topic is fantastic! ‘Scotland’. Read on to find out what else we have been up to.

Literacy

As well as revising lots of sounds previously taught, we learnt two new sounds this week: ‘oy’ e.g.(boy, toy, enjoy) and ‘ow’ e.g.(bow, row, show). Both of these sounds appear in lots of words, (as we found out)! Now that we have a bank of sounds in our heads, we are writing more and more each day and using our knowledge of these sounds to help us to sound out words when we are reading too. We are becoming more confident at writing independently and giving writing a go. Our teachers are VERY proud of us all ( like always)!

Numeracy

We have been practising how to tell the time using o’clock and half past, which we are becoming really good at. We also learn about digital clocks, we know that half-past finishes with -:30) and o clock finishes with-:00).  We have also been practising subtraction using the number line and the Rekenrek.

Health and Wellbeing

We continue to learn how to skip in P.E. and again, it was easier for some of us than others. Skipping is really good as it helps with balance, jumping and coordination and it is fun!

Topic

Scotland- Woohoo!!! ‘Rabbie’ Burn’s day was on the 25th of January of course; so on this day, we had a great time tasting Scottish foods (Shortbread, oatcakes, Irn-Bru). We learned some dance steps, sang songs, and designed our own tartan kilts and Scottish flags.

RE

We were learning that God invites us to show love to others. We know that God loves everybody and He wants us to love others. We know that we can show love by being kind and showing respect to our families and friends. It is good also to share our toys, help out at home, take care of other people’s property and have good manners.

Thank you for reading our blog, have a nice weekend.

Primary 1.

Busy week in P2 :-)

This week in literacy, we wrote our weekend news, learned about different rhymes and practised our spelling with the well–known strategy, ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. Also, we did our personal statements (What I am best at, what I am proud of and what I have improved on.)

This week, we were taught about angles. We know now that an acute angle is under 90 degrees, a right angle is exactly 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is over 90 degrees, but below 180. Additionally, we practised some division and we were making 26 with the most efficient strategy possible.

Our continuous topic is Health and Wellbeing, Resilience. We know that a resilient person is one, who never gives up, always tries best, knows that after a ‘down’ in life, there is always an ‘up’. We were VERY resilient too – when we were doing the ‘mile a day ’. Although it was quite hot and doing 6 whole laps around the field is quite tiresome, we managed it in the end 🙂

As you may know, Pope Francis has asked everyone to pray to the Virgin Mary to end the coronavirus pandemic, therefore, we were praying to Mary, too.

It’s fun learning another language! This week we were still revising our knowledge of how to say numbers, colours and simple greetings in Spanish.

Lastly, we painted our very own pictures of the Eiffel Tower painting by George Seurat using paint and cotton swabs. Our paintings were very good, not as good as his!

Have a lovely weekend – and remember; we have Monday off! 🙂

Kind Regards,

Anna Koziel

What a week in P2… have a read.

We have been learning about capacity, volume and about a litre and half of a litre. We know that 1L is 1000ml so half of a litre is 500mg. The capacity is the total amount of space in the container. Volume is the amount of something in the container.

We were learning about a new sound this week o-e, like home, alone, stone, broke etc. We also were learning about ‘Narrative Writing’. First, we create a narrative planer, then we wrote our narrative writing using: A title, an orientation, a complication and a resolution. We also practised our handwriting, paying special attention to keeping our writing neat.

In RE we were learning about the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were so happy that there was finally one person who helped this poor man.

In our topic, we are going to learn this term about Healthy Body- Healthy Mind. We will be learning more in-depth about SHANARRI. S-safe, H- health, A-active, N-nurtured, A-achievement,  R-respected,  R-responsible, I-included

In science, we planted our Sunflower seeds, and now we look after them, by watering them every day. We started to observe their growth by using our Sunflower Dairy. It was such an interesting experience.

Outdoor learning was fun too, Mr Muldoon showed us some great games and even the weather was not too bad this week.

In Spanish we were learning about Los colores, we were playing the ‘Corner Game’ using Spanish the language.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

Kind Regards,

Mrs Koziel

We had a lovely week!

  • At literacy, we were learning about recount stories using First, Then, Next, Lastly. We tried to include all our success criteria: capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and wow words. We were practising our handwriting and now we know a new sound: ‘ph’ e.g. pharmacy, elephant, Sophie or photograph.
  • At maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes properties: faces, vertices and edges.
  • For RE, we have been learning about St Ruth and St Jude Thaddeus, we know how good these people were and that they listened to God.
  • In Spanish, we were reviewing our knowledge and we were learning how to say: ‘Can I go to the toilet, please?’ ‘Puedo ir al bano?’
  • In Science we were learning about senses, the first sense which we were learning about was hearing.
  • We also had a chance to do some experiments this week. We know that hand gel with alcohol is flammable so after using it we should not go too close to a fire. Next, we have drawn spiders on a tin foil, poured a little bit of water over it and our spiders became alive. J The most interesting was the experiment where we created a vacuum inside the upside-down glass with the help of a little candle.
  • We also did lots of activities with Mr Muldoon. PE was great!
  • We were learning about emotions. We know that we have lots of different emotions and that our bodies can react differently when we feel in a certain way.
  • Today we came dressed up in Halloween costumes – it was good fun. We decorated pumpkins and talked about how we celebrated Halloween last year as well as how it is going to look like tomorrow.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Probability and Persuasion in Primary 6

This week Primary 6 have been investigating probability with some games and data handling tasks. Some children chose to do their tasks outside in the sunshine and others preferred to stay inside in the shade. Lovely to have that choice while we learn at home.

We continued to develop our skills in persuasive writing by creating an advert for a product of our choice and use language that would entice someone to buy that product.

We have also been learning about the next stage in the Wars of Independence with the Battle of Falkirk,  which was not too far away in distance. The children researched some of the weapons and armour used during this period in history to create diagrams, a scratch animation advert and to design their own weapon that would have been more successful for the Scots in this battle.

Well done Primary 6 we enjoyed seeing your creativity this week.

Happy 40th Jubilee St.Nicholas Primary!

congrats-well-done

Primary 6 visit Scottish Shale Museum

Primary 6 enjoyed a wonderful day today at the Almond Valley Heritage Centre and Scottish Shale Oil Museum! Our topic is Scottish Industries and we loved seeing how life in Broxburn would have been in the days of mining and shale oil.

We played games in the adventure zone, made candles using parrafin wax, explored the history of industry in Broxburn. Then we visited the old Mill, and the farm!

We had lots of fun on the trampolines, gokarts, wartime garden, animal enclosures and parks!

Thank you to Sami, Manpida, Freya and Ali’s mums for coming along and sharing this day with us! Even though it was cold and wet, we all had a fantastic time!

DANCEMARATHON!

BeFunky Collage COLL

Here are some photos from our Dance Marathon yesterday!

We all had a wonderful time and hopefully raised lots of money for our Lenten Appeal!

5, 2 or 1 hour of non stop dancing can be pretty challenging! Well done everyone!

A special THANK YOU to the dance leaders from St Margarets Academy for running a session with us, and the girls from JHM who taught everyone an amazing dance!

Highlights were definitely the class dance off, lip sync battle and best dancer competition!

Remember to bring in your sponsor money by FRIDAY!

P6 EGGSPERIMENT!

IMG_0747Primary 6 have been completing our health and well being topic about nutritional values of our food and drinks. We learned about the sugar in our drinks and were amazed to see the amount in some of our favourite drinks! We created a ‘think before you drink’ display to remind us just how unhealthy these drinks are and to make us think twice about buying them regularly!

This week we completed an experiment with eggs to find out what these drinks can do to our teeth! Mrs Thomson boiled us some eggs and we put them into cola, coffee, tea and water. We left them for 5 days… not only did they smell bad, when we removed them they looked disgusting! The tea, coffee and cola all stained the eggs… the coffee was the worst; it stained the inside of the egg when we cut it open! The egg that we left in water was perfect, it was not stained at all. We got some toothbrushes and and tried to see if any of the staining would come off but it didn’t! The egg soaked in cola was slimy and solid to cut! Yuk!

We also looked at calcium in bones and teeth! We soaked some bones from chicken drumsticks in vingear, the acid made the bones very easy to bend, this showed us the importance of drinking calcium based drinks and food!

Happy Campers!

Fun at Night!
Fun at Night!

Last month the children of primary 6 had a wonderful time at school camp!

We were put to the test with many challenges and we all learned lots of new skills! Have a look at some of our photos!

My favourite activity was the inflatables, we were battling against each other – Mandipa

I loved the trail bikes because we went on an adventure – Finlay

I loved going up Jacobs ladder, it was really hard! – Francesco

I liked bungee run, it was so funny seeing Miss King and Miss Miller against each other – Nicole

I liked the lowropes, I went down the mineshaft! – Sami

Lendrick Muir has nice food, pizza was great! – Madison

I loved doing the rocket launch challenge – Caitlin

Perfect Popping in Primary 6!

Last week we were practicing using ‘an’ and ‘a’ in sentences based on words with vowel sounds. Some of it was quite tricky because we thought it only mattered if the next word began with a,e,i,o or u, but ACTUALLY be discovered that words with any vowel sound would have ‘an’ for example….

‘An honest man’ would have an instead of a because the h is silent and the word starts with a ‘o’ sound!

Once we finally got to the bottom of it we worked in teams to complete a quick assessment of what we had learned. We worked in 2 teams in a race against time! We had to read a sentence with ‘a’ or ‘an’ missing then put it into the correct category… sounds easy? Well the trick was the sentences were inside balloons! We had to pop the balloon first! As soon as Miss Miller and Miss King said ‘Go!’ the classroom turned into a frenzy of cheering and excitement! At the end we made sure everyone had placed their sentence in the correct category and it showed us that most people had really grasped using a and an properly! We are looking forward to using this game to assess our learning in other areas soon!

Learning at the Library!

On Wednesday afternoon, all the Primary 4 children visited Broxburn Library.  We listened carefully to Diane sharing information about the Vikings.

Patryk – I found out some Viking names and the houses would have been dark because there were no windows.

Nia – I learned that children could get married as young as 12.

Cameron H – Viking houses had one large hole in the roof that allowed the smoke from the fire to escape.  They did not have any windows so the Vikings would have been hot in the warm months.

Lewis – Vikings did not have Sir names.

Elise D – The boats they travelled in were called long boats.

Adrian – The Vikings wore plain clothes.

Alanna – Some Viking men dyed their hair blond.

Anya – Vikings dyed their clothes using dye from plants.

Primary 4a are back to school and ready to learn!

We have all enjoyed our first few days in Primary 4.  It’s nice to be back to school after enjoying a long summer holiday!

Nia – I am really enjoying doing joined up handwriting.

Riley – We have been learning our times table and been doing fun games.

Cameron H – I have loved listening to our class novel “Matilda”

Lewis – I enjoyed designing my own bunting all about me.

Khai – I enjoyed playing the 11s game in class.

Ava – I wrote a long story all about me and I wrote neatly with lots of detail.

Fun in the sun for primary 3’s school trip!

P3 had an amazing day last week when we went on our school trip!  As we have been learning about different cultures and food from around the world, as well as keeping our bodies healthy, we visited some local restaurants to sample some different foods and learn about how to make our own meals! We had great fun and would like to thank the Harvester Grill and Pizza Express at Livingston Centre for letting us visit! I’m sure we’ll all be back soon!

When our visits were over we got back on the bus and traveled to our local park Stewartfield where we enjoyed a picnic in the glorious sunshine! We played rounders and races and then enjoyed an afternoon walk back to school!

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Nia’s mum, Ruby’s mum, Hollie C’s mum, Owen’s mum, Esme’s dad and Kieron’s granny for joining us on our trip! We hope you had as much fun as all of us!

Glasgow Science Centre

On Monday 1st June, P4, P5/4 and P5 went to the Science Centre in Glasgow.   When we arrived some of us went to the first floor, some of us went to the second floor and the rest of us went to the top floor.  It was a great trip and we all enjoyed the activities, experiments and science theatre show!  We got the chance to have a browse in the shop and buy souvenirs and had our lunch in the large atrium.

Isobel – I enjoyed the large scale hamster wheel on the third floor and it wasn’t as easy as it looked!

Nicole – I enjoyed when we got the chance  to pump the blood to the heart and it increased the heart beat.

Niamh – I liked watching Francesco and Isla trying to eat the cream crackers quickly.

Ehlana – I learned that the body needs to let gas release or you could explode!

Adrian – I liked the challenge where I had to use the air gun to manouver the beach ball through the hoop.

Alea – When watching the show I learned that the amount of blood your heart beats every day can fill 125 bath tubs!

Alex – I liked looking at the real life tornado that re-formed itself.

Madison – I enjoyed holding onto the high bar and timed how long I could do this for.

Ben – The sprint challenge was great!  I got a best time of 1:63.

Lukas – I liked when I had to spin the wheel, whilst standing on the platform and turn the wheel at the same time.  Astronaut use this in space to control the shuttle.

We would defintiely recommend the trip to another class.  It was a great day out, we learned lots and had fun!  A special thanks to our wonderful parent helpers for keeping us safe.

SUPER SKY SKILLS!

We all really enjoyed our morning at Sky Skills Studios in Livingston.  It gave us an experience that took us behind the scenes at Sky where we worked in groups to create our very own TV news report.

Each of us had an important role to play including: producer, director, scriptwriter, camera operator, presenter/reporter, eye witness, expert and editor.  It was a brilliant experience and helped us devlop many important skills including communication, self management, team work, problem solving and creativity.  We were all given a certificate and USB wrist band which contained the news report.

Anna – I loved being a Director because I got to make suggestions and gave people directions.

Logan – I liked being the editor because I changed the background screens and decided which clips to use.

Niamh – I was the reporter and I got to talk in front of the camera and dress up!

Ben – I was the director and I enjoyed showing the reporters what to do in order to make the scenes look professional.

Class Clowns!

Primary 3b made fantastic clown hats yesterday to end our circus topic. The children have had lots of fun learning about the circus and learning circus skills! There was lots of giggles getting these funny clown pictures taken! I hope you all have a lovely Easter holiday primary 3. I’m looking forward to seeing you all next term and hearing your exciting holiday news!

Have fun this Easter,

Miss Irvine 🙂

Primary 3 Easter Egg Hunt on Onesie Day!

Last Friday was ONESIE DAY at St Nicholas Primary School and Primary 3 had a great time! We celebrated with an Easter Egg Hunt in aid of the Lenten Appeal! We all paid 20p and when we went on the hunt for sweeties and chocolate eggs hidden all around the playground!

It was great fun… some people found lots of sweets, some found a few and some didn’t find any but when we got back to class we shared then all out equally!

Fantastic Presentations from p3b!

For the past 2 weeks, primary 3 have been preparing wonderful presentations as a homework challenge. On Tuesday everyone shared their presentation with the whole class. Everyone was absolutely fantastic! The pupils stood confidently at the front of the class and had to use a big loud voice as well as make eye contact with the audience. The topics chosen by the pupils were great and it was fantastic to hear each child talk in detail about something they are interested in. It was clear to see how much effort had been put into preparing the presentations. The variety of posters, powerpoints, props and video clips was amazing!

A huge WELL DONE to all the children in primary 3, you were all stars and I am so proud of you! I enjoyed every one of your presentations and I learned lots of new things!

Miss Irvine : )

Primary 3 Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Today we had a great day celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! We learned about the life of St. Patrick in Literacy, Maths and R.M.E lessons. We read all about the symbols of St. Patrick’s day then answered comprehension questions. We used our knowledge of times tables to create a picture of a leprechaun and we learned how St. Patrick used a shamrock to tell people about God and the Holy Trinity. After looking at symbols of luck, we discussed how we are all lucky in different ways.

Primary 3 Round Up!

Primary 3 are delighted to finally be able to begin sharing our learning with you!

Please look out for regular updates about all the fun we have been having and all the things we have been learning!

Here are some pictures of some of the things we have been getting up to…

World Book Day

As today is World Book Day, lots of us came to school dressed as our favourite characters from our favourite books.  This morning in class we read our favourite stories and then listened to a story and poem by Roger McGough on BBC Autors Live.  We wrote about our favourite book and character and asked our friends what their favourite book is and why.

Mandipa – I love “Alice Miranda at School” by Jacqueline Harvey because the girl in the story is very brave as she leaves her parents and starts boarding school.

Jaime – My favourite stories are “Katie Morag” by Mairi Hedderwick.  I like them because they are based in Scotland and Katie Morag is not afraid of anything.  She goes on lots of adventures on the Isle of Struay.

Eoin – Roald Dahl is my favourite author and I really enjoy reading “Danny the champion of the World”.  In the book Danny and his dad come up with a plot against the evil Mr Victor Hazell!

Time to learn about Time!

Primary 5 are learning about telling the time using analogue and digital clocks.  As part of a homework challenge, Miss Crease asked us to design and construct either an analogue or digital clock or a watch.

Aaron – I made a digital clock using lego.  It was really easy to make and my friends thought it was a good idea.

Ben – My clock is an analogue clock and I used things around the house to make it.

Erin – I made a huge watch and I used a paper fastener so that the hands can move.  It’s big enough for a giant to

wear!

We have the right to education which develops your personality, respect for other’s rights and the environment.

Today the primary 7 football team were invited to take part in a football festival at Howden St Andrew’s Primary School! We played 4 games against teams from St Pauls, St Andrews, Holy Family and Livingston Village. We are very pleased to announce that we won every game!

This was a great opportunity to meet with other primary 7s from different schools, thank you to Howden St Andrew’s Primary School for organising the event!

A huge thank you to Mrs Bell and Mrs Thompson for driving us there and cheering us on from Miss King and the team!

Terrific Tuesday!

Article 15

You have the right to be with friends and join or set up clubs, unless this breaks the rights of others

Well we certainly have had a very busy day!  P3 and P3/2 thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a Judo taster session in the school hall.  We did different Judo moves and took part in fun games with a partner.  We even got to wear special Judo jackets.

Later in the morning, all of the P3 children began their series of ‘Healthy Hearts’ activities with James Pegg and George Scott.  George told us all about how to keep healthy and how important our physical and emotional wellbeing is.  We then went over to the hall in The Strathbrock Partnership Centre where we did lots of active games.  The main message that we learned from today is that we should all ENCOURAGE each other.

Our Amazing Adventure in Amazonia!

Article 29

You have the right to education which develops your personality, respect for other’s rights and the environment

To end our wonderful rainforest topic primary 5 embarked on a wonderful adventure to Amazonia before the Easter holidays. Amazonia is Scotland’s largest indoor tropical rainforest and home to many amazing and rare animals. We could feel the humidity and heat the minute we entered the building! We viewed and handled many different creatures and had an amazing experience! Here are some of our thoughts on the day…

‘We saw monkeys, spiders, snakes, birds and butterflies. It smelled really funny! We went into a room to hold animals, I held a fat tailed gecko, I shook hands with a tarantula and had a snake around my neck! We played a game where you stand in front of a special green screen and it looks like you are in the actual rainforest! It was a brilliant day!’ Erin L

“I loved holding the animals, but was a bit scared that they were going to jump up on me!” Murray

‘I really enjoyed Amazonia. The best bit was seeing all the nocturnal animals. I had the snake around my neck but it was scary holding the spider because I am scared of them but I still did it!’ Lewis B

“When the Kinkajou ran over our heads in the dark room, I got a really big fright, because we couldn’t see it!” Jasmine

A big thank you to our helpers Mrs Buchanan and Mrs King for coming on our trip!

Terrific Ten Pin Bowling!

Primary 5 had a great time ten pin bowling at M and D’s theme park after their visit to Amazonia before the Easter holidays! We ate our lunch in  the arcade then got our shoes changed and into our bowling teams. It was great fun and there were lots of cheers and excitement as people managed to get strikes and spares during  the games!

‘We went on our school trip to bowling at M and D’s. We ate our lunch and got into groups and went to our lanes. Miss King, Mrs King, Mrs Coutts and Mrs Buchanan Coutts all had a shot and every time they got strikes! When we  finished my team had 83 points. We were having so much fun that we had to run for the bus because we were almost late! Luckily the driver was waiting for us.’ Hannah S

‘Bowling was amazing fun! I was in  a group with Callum, Colin, Oliver, Matthew and Lewis. We were all cheering when we got spares!’ Kieran

‘Jack won in our group but I was amazed because I managed to get TWO strikes!’ Louay

‘We were all celebrating when Declan got a strike! Well done.’ Andrew

Zumba-mania

Primaries 3 and 3/2 put on their fitness gear and took part in the Zumbathon for our Lenten appeal.  Hollie C particularly enjoyed the Battlestar game and Cole enjoyed displaying his moves in the Zumba circle.  Ollie liked the warm up activities as it was helping to get his body ready for the fun exercises.

Nina was a great instructor and made Zumba look effortless and fun!  Here are some photos of us in action.
