P3 Home learning

This is our third week of learning at home.  Here are some of the things we have been learning about.

We have been `researching a Mediterranean climate zone and then creating a poster or video about why we should visit this area.

We have been using money this week to practice paying for items and calculating the change.  We have tried to make our own shops at home and also used topmarks games to help us.

We have been practicing common words this week and also writing  a diary about what we have been doing during this time.

We have been practicing making tens in number talks.

We have use the art hub to complete a drawing tutorial this week.

We have also been learning about things that dissolve and completing an experiment with things we have at home to discover what dissolves and what does not.

We have also tried to use dance mat typing to help us improve our typing skills.

We have also tried some additional challenges like building a den at home, doing P.E with Joe Wicks, watching the animals at Monterey Bay Aquarium and playing sumdog.  Here are some examples of fantastic home learning in P3.

P3’s week

This week in P3 we have been:

  • We have been learning to take notes.   We know you don’t need to write full sentences with capital letters and full stops. We use bullet points.
  • We have been learning the 3 times table. The pattern in the answers is odd/even. We know that you add 3 each time.
  • We have been learning about patterns.
  • In handwriting we have been joining words like quickly, skipping and jump.
  • We had Mass on Wednesday for Ash Wednesday.  We know that we get ashes on our foreheads and it is the start of Lent. Lent is when we prepare for Easter and we try to give up something, or do more of something.
  • It was pancake day on Tuesday.
  • We learned about the 10 commandments that God gave to Moses. We know the 2 most important  rules are: love God and love your neighbour.
  • In Music, we learned about on the street music. we were learning about body percussion – clicking and clapping.
  • In Spanish, we learned about colours we love and don’t like.  We know how to say this in Spanish.
  • In P.E we were learning how to do knots and crosses. We were also playing ‘King ball’ which was a Kings and Queens game.
  • Yesterday we listened to a talk from a Robotics engineer. He has designed lots of different robots.
  • We also completed our engineering competition designs.
  • For writing we were learning how to write an opening.  we had to think of different openers and remember them.
  • We were learning about poems.  We listened to the poem and then drew pictures to go with the poem.

What a busy week! We can’t wait to see what we will learn next week.

P5b’s digital week

This has been a busy week in P5b. We have really enjoyed digital week and learned lots of new things.

Some of the activities we took part in are coding, debugging, a silent disco, QR hunt and a VR experience.

Chloe – My favourite part was the silent disco.

Charlie – My favourite part of the week was QR hunt as we had to go around the school to find all the different parts of the story.

Ellie – My favourite was the silent disco because it had lots of different music to listen to.

Daniel – My favourite part of the week was making a presentation about solids, liquids and gases. I worked well with my group.

Szymon – My favourite part of the week was when we did the hour of code because it was fun.

Alex – I learned about solids, liquids and gases and made a presentation using powerpoint.

Erin – I learned how to use clips this week.

Kacper – I learned how to debug this week.

Cameron – I learned how to use scratch this week.

We also had a day on Friday where we only used digital technology. What a busy week! We have learned so much. Thank you to our digital leaders for helping us.

 

Primary 2, Primary 3

Our Local area

Primary 3 and 3/2 are learning about Our Local Area this term as part of our school topic on Scotland.

This week for homework we interviewed our mum and dads about why they chose to live in this area. We found out that some of them chose to live here because it is a nice area, it is quiet, its very green, houses are cheaper than in Edinburgh so they could buy bigger houses and a lot of our families live here. Some families have lived here for over 20 years and others are new to the area.

Next week, we are going for a walk along Broxburn main street to look at the different shops and buildings we can see. We are then going to build Broxburn in our area. Please make sure you have a water proof jacket for our walk on Monday. If you have any old cardboard boxes could you please bring them into school to help us to build our 3D model of Broxburn. Thank you.

We will post photographs of our model when we are finished it. We can’t wait to start this next week.

Dynamic Data

On Thursday the 10th of December primary 7 visited Dynamic Earth as part of the Big Data Event.  Data is information stored in an electronic device or computers.

When we arrived we split into three groups, one of which went off to do an interview with Jude Spence and the other two had a tour of Dynamic Earth. First on the tour we found out about the Big Band. We went into a time machine to travel back 6.2 billion years, surprisingly it didn’t take us that long! We all thought the time machine was very interesting as we got lots of facts about how our Solar System began.

Next we moved onto find out about the formation of Planet Earth and how ice formed the mountains, rivers and valleys. We even got to see and touch a huge iceberg!

Afterwards we went a flight to find out about the Rainforest. This was most people’s favourite part of the day as the it was quite scary and we loved wearing our 3d glasses.

Ten people were chosen by the teachers  to go to and answer questions and got a once in a  life time experience in the data  dome. The Data Dome  is a large black sphere and projectors shined on the sphere which created circles to go round showing the trending data on Social media such as Twitter. They also showed how some of the data is used. Rachael learnt that data came from many different places and  Sophie  learnt that data is formed by many different ways.

To finish the day we also got a chance to use some Google Cardboard, this is like Google glasses. It was so much fun and everyone was laughing at each others reactions.

Finally we would like to say a big thank you to Jude Spence for organising the day for us, we all really enjoyed ourselves and would love to go back.

P7 Anderson Bomb Shelter Homework

bomb shelter 055For the past two weeks primary 7 a have been busy at home building their Anderson Bomb shelters.

We learned that the Anderson Bomb Shelter was designed in 1938 by William Paterson and Oscar Carl Kerrison. The shelter was named after Sir John Anderson, the man responsible for preparing Britain to withstand German air raids.

Home is where the habitat is…

Our teachers are so proud of us for all of the hard work and effort that we put into making our Living Things habitats.  We were set a homework challenge to choose a habitat, learn about it and create it using material of our choice.  We  have made a huge variety of wonderful habitats.  These include The Arctic, a beaver’s dam, a hedgehog’s nest, a pond full of frogs, a bird’s nest, an ape house and many more.

We have invited Primary 1 to come and have a look at them and we will tell them how we made them, why we chose to make this habitat and what we have learned.

We really enjoyed the homework challenge because it helped make learning fun!

Famous Scottish Inventors!

As part of our Scotland Topic, Primary 2 have been learning about famous Scottish inventors. We found out that John Logie Baird invented the television and Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. We decided to make  our own telephone using paper cups and string and we were able to hear and speak to each other through these! Homework Challenge!

Dear Parent/Carer

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE

This term your child has been learning about Transport, particularly comparing modern day modes of transport and transport from the past.  They have been learning about penny farthings, horse and carriages, steam trains and the first air travel.

Their challenge is to create their own model of one of these modes of transport using everyday materials.  Please return the completed model no later than Friday 10th October.

It would be lovely to display their masterpieces for all the other children and parents to see at our showcase event on Friday 17th October at 11am.

Friendship Fun!

As part of our assembly preparation we made friendship necklaces in class. We used food colouring to dye pasta tubes to make it nice and colourful and left it to dry overnight. Then the next day, we put the pasta tubes through the string to make vibrant necklaces for a friend in our class. We have been talking about the importance of friendship and have discussed the qualities a true friend should have.

Our ‘Friendship’ assembly is on Friday 16th May and we look forward to showcasing all of our work!

Primary 6 Science and Technology Day

Yesterday Primary 6 were invited along to Broxburn Academy for their annual Science and Technology day. We were all very excited as the hall was packed with loads of children from other local schools and some strange looking experiments and stations.

The first station we visited was called Hovercraft CD. To make these we had to blow up a balloon and attached then to CDs with a closed bottle cap on it. Next we put them on the floor and opened the bottle cap. Since we had opened the bottle cap, the air from the balloon escaped which made the CD slide along the floor.

Next was Outrageous Ooze. First we were asked whether we thought the ooze was a solid or a liquid, we all thought it look like a solid.  The third year pupils asked us to make a snowball out of the ooze but as soon as we scooped some up it melted away. Next we were asked to hit the ooze and amazingly it didn’t splash but if we gently put our hands into the ooze they sunk.  After trying out different experiments with the ooze we found out that it was a solid and a liquid! This is called a colloid.

The third station was called Fizz Pop Rockets, for this one we were given safety goggles. We had to fill a little tub with water and stick a fizzy tablet with onto the lid. We then placed the tub upside in a tray and started our timers. After a few seconds the tub flew up in the air with a pop! This happened because the tablet dissolved in the water releasing a gas called Carbon Dioxide.

The fourth station was microscopes. First we had to pick out some pond weed and put it on a glass slide. Then we looked through the microscope to see the plant cells. After that we were given another strip with brain cells to have a look at.

The second part of our day was all about CDT (craft, design and technology). We had to design and build a skyscraper. First we all planned out a design and then used the straws and tape to build our structure. It was a competition to see who could build the highest structure. The highest tower was over two metres!

After lunch we had a big quiz. Most of the questions were to do with what we had learned throughout the day. The other questions were to do with science and technology. Sadly, St. Nicholas didn`t win but we had a great day!

Marvellous Multiplication!

Primaries 3 and 3/2 are busy learning all about the 2 and 5 times tables.  We have been involved in active games and we have made multiplication posters to help us remember the number facts.  Miss Crease even made up a song to help us remember the multiples! We have also been using ICT to help us develop our knowledge of these tables by playing Number Gym and Table mountain on the Smart board and laptops.  Our teachers have asked us to keep practising the tables using our green jotters each night as part of our homework.  It is important to have a quick and accurate recall of these table facts.

Solar System

Primary 6 have been busy transforming themselves into space experts.

We have been using our Space topic to cover lots of areas of the curriculum including; mathematics, science, art and design, technology and language skills.  

Over the past few weeks Primary 6 have been busy researching our Solar System using computers and information books. We used the information we had gathered to create different posters, make 3d models and design our classroom doors.

To make our 3d models of the Solar System we had to use lots of problem solving skills, maths skills and our knowledge of the planets to ensure our model was accurate. Before we could begin making the planets we had to work out the size of each planet. To do this we learned about the diameter and radius of a circle.  We then set a compass to different measurements to draw the circles so that the planets were different sizes, like they are in real life. The next step in making our models of the Solar System was to scrunch up lots of newspaper and stick it onto the circles of cardboard to make it 3d. Then we had to layer our models with mod rock so that they were smooth, but the rocky planets were a bit bumpier than the gas giants. Finally when the mod rock was dry we painted our 3d models which the Janitor helped us to put up on the wall. Once the planets were up we started to make posters to go along with our planets.

When designing our classroom doors we used our math skills to measure the length and the width of our door and then used these measurements to cut our paper. To make our door design we had to draw out our design on a4 paper at home and then we put a bit of different peoples’ ideas together to make our final design. In the end we decided on having an astronaut on the smaller door and on the bigger door we split it into 3 sections. On one section we put the earth and all the phases of the moon around it, on another section we put a comet saying welcome to p6 on it, on the last section of the door we painted the moon then drew famous spacecrafts.

Homework Challenge- build a Roman chariot.

As part of our homework, Miss Woods and Miss Crease have set us a challenge!  We have been asked to design and build a Roman chariot using everyday materials from home.

We looked at photos and video clips of Roman chariots and learned how and why they were used by the Romans.

We have to bring our chariots into school by next Friday 14th February.  Photographs will follow…

If we find this challenge a little bit too difficult, our teachers said that we could draw a labelled diagram of a Roman chariot instead.
