Probability and Persuasion in Primary 6

This week Primary 6 have been investigating probability with some games and data handling tasks. Some children chose to do their tasks outside in the sunshine and others preferred to stay inside in the shade. Lovely to have that choice while we learn at home.

We continued to develop our skills in persuasive writing by creating an advert for a product of our choice and use language that would entice someone to buy that product.

We have also been learning about the next stage in the Wars of Independence with the Battle of Falkirk,  which was not too far away in distance. The children researched some of the weapons and armour used during this period in history to create diagrams, a scratch animation advert and to design their own weapon that would have been more successful for the Scots in this battle.

Well done Primary 6 we enjoyed seeing your creativity this week.

P3 Home learning

This is our third week of learning at home.  Here are some of the things we have been learning about.

We have been `researching a Mediterranean climate zone and then creating a poster or video about why we should visit this area.

We have been using money this week to practice paying for items and calculating the change.  We have tried to make our own shops at home and also used topmarks games to help us.

We have been practicing common words this week and also writing  a diary about what we have been doing during this time.

We have been practicing making tens in number talks.

We have use the art hub to complete a drawing tutorial this week.

We have also been learning about things that dissolve and completing an experiment with things we have at home to discover what dissolves and what does not.

We have also tried to use dance mat typing to help us improve our typing skills.

We have also tried some additional challenges like building a den at home, doing P.E with Joe Wicks, watching the animals at Monterey Bay Aquarium and playing sumdog.  Here are some examples of fantastic home learning in P3.

Our first full week as Primary 7a

As primary sevens one of our responsibilities is to help our P1 buddies. At break we have been helping them to get ready for break by putting on their jackets, shoes and getting their snacks. Luke found that his buddy Bartosz was very shy at first but he helped to bring him out his shell and make new friends. Amie-Lee helped her buddy Sophie to be responsible by picking up litter but have fun while doing so. Ethan felt his buddy  was shy at first but by the end of the week they played together and got along well. Molly helped her buddy Ava to make new friends in her class.

In class this week in art we drew our own tennis players and used paint to create a water colour effect. In maths we did place value challenge and code breakers in order to find out the numbers and break the code. In literacy we wrote our new prayer and learned how to use synonyms and in writing we wrote an imaginative diary entry based on our class novel.

Mrs Heather played a name game with us on Wednesday where we had to remember all of the names of people in our class with an adjective in front of it – Nice Nicola, lovely Laura, Incredible Isla…

Over all we had a great full week back!

Magnificent Mandalas

Look at are amazing mandalas from P6b .Also we were making a recount of a poem . The poem was called The Highwayman. Today we were learning all about Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We learned that he lived in Glasgow, and he was an artist. We made our own pictures based on his. We decided that for it to be similar, we had to have a pink flower, some stripes, and some small squares.

Don’t they look amazing?

Areha’s Autobiography

Autobiography-Areha
L.I I can write an autobiography
S.C. chronological order, past tense, First person, emotive language
Anyone ever dreamt of being a doctor? Ever thought of helping others solve their problems? Has anyone had a memorable childhood? Anyone done something they should not have done? Anyone made a fool of themselves? Well
I was born on the 28th of June 2003 6 am Saturday morning St John’s hospital Livingston. My due date was the 2nd of July as you can see I was a week early. My mum and dad had me 2 years after their wedding. Most people expected me to be a boy but I turned out to be a girl. Some people were happy like my big cousin but others were not, like my uncle. When I was born my weight was 6 pounds 8 ounces, my chosen names were Areha and Areeba. Anyway my birth name was Areha Aslam.
I took my first step on the 23 of July late at night 2004. My first word was dada, my favourite baby food was broccoli and cauliflower. My first birthday rocked! I got a gigantic winnie the pooh teddy bear from my dad I was a geek about Winnie the pooh when I was small. I was a fussy little eater and I would only eat from my aunty and if I did eat, I would only eat white chocolate and wotsits crisps.
I was a chubby little baby. My favourite outfit was a red velvet dress and my very first shoes were a pair of purple Velcro flip on’s. It was on a cold winters day I was about 2 years I had nothing better to do than have a laugh with my dad. Well we were playing and he was spinning me round in circles. At first I thought I was enjoying it but and then within seconds I gave my dad an unpleasant surprise. I threw up in his mouth at first he was raging at me ready to scream then after about a mili second the room was full of laughter.
About a year later at the age of three I was walking back from nursery in a very unusual way I was cheeky at that time. I walked into a shop singing the Bob the builder song I went in and pinched a lady’s bottom, she screamed and her face went bright red but once she realized I was only a little girl she gave me a big cheesy grin.
When I was little my favourite cartoons were Lazy town ,64 zoo lane, Balamory and Bob the builder. I would only go to bed when my dad was at home because for some reason I would feel more safe with my dad around the house.
When I was just turning four my little brother Aayan was born on the 3rd of September 2006 every day when I came back from nursery I would try and be helpful and help feed my baby brother so that at the end of the week I would get a toy or some sort of treat. Well instead of feeding my brother I would eat the food myself and then say that I had fed him but as soon I would leave he would start crying, say to my mum he was hungry and carry his milk bottle to me.
Then after when I was in primary 1 and 2 I would make up excuses not to go to school but I would fail every time. Every time I would come back from school I wouldn’t do what my dad told me to do but and then as soon as he would say I’m not talking to you I would do that thing straight away.
When I went to the middle area in p3 I had the teacher I had in p1 Miss Woods (well she was then) now I am in p7 and she is Mrs Dymock ,she got married in 2014. Those days and times were funny they bring back . Me and my friend would try to be like her by asking her if we could wear her jewellery, we would ask every day because we knew her answer would always be yes.
P3 was also a very sad year for us because Mr Kelly our old deputy teacher left. He got a job as a head teacher in a school in Glasgow. For many years he has been missed.
Primary 4 was exciting we had a wonderful teacher Miss brown and along with Mrs McGuire who now is an acting deputy teacher
Now primary 5 was wow amazing primary 5 was one my best years well until p7 I had the world’s most coolest teacher Mrs Buchanan Coutts, she had the world’s most weird and wacky imagination. We had a topic on Kenya it was so interesting. We had a homework project we had to make, design, draw and create a Kenya book and the person that worked over and beyond their expectations would get 5 floating stars and I got the 5 stars out of the whole class. In primary 6 my teacher was Mrs Heather she was really nice. The best part of having her has a teacher was that every time we would do something like maths she would put music on, she rocked at that !
Now this is me now age 11 primary 7b my teacher is called Mrs Bell she is funny and not too shouty. This is my best year because our topic was WW2 and now it is Japan. I feel so grown up because it feels like I can just do anything. I am at the top of the school.
When I graduate I want to be a doctor, I want to help people get better. My hopes and dreams are to have a successful life and try my very best in everything.

Persuasive or what?

Article 12

We have the right to an opinion and for it to be listened to and taken seriously

Recently, in Primary 5 we have been practising our skills in persuasive writing, when we wrote to Edinburgh Trams.  A little birdie told us (Mrs B-C) the date that the trams were going to go live around the 30th or 31st of May and that one their first drivers/driving instructors was really young (her son, Dale).  He was also Miss King’s classmate at St Margaret’s Academy andNot only that, but we also found out that because he wore aviator sunglasses all the time, he has been given a really cool nickname – Tram Cruise.  We thought it would be great idea if we wrote to the General Manager/Director to ask him if Dale could be the driver and if we could be amongst the first passengers, with him mum and his classmate, when they go live.

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful on being the first passengers, but because of our letters, Edinburgh Council found out about Dale and so did the Edinburgh Evening News!

We may not be the first passengers, but Tom Norris, Director and General Manager wrote back to us to invite into the depot for a tour and a ride of the trams before the end of term and Mrs Buchanan-Coutts and Miss King are trying their best to get this organised.  In the meantime, to say thank you, Tram Cruise himself  paid us a visit!  Although Dale hasn’t been chosen to be the inaugural driver on the 31st May (that goes to 19 year old Craig Scotland), he will be on it as Craig’s instructor and that is all thanks to us.   We can be quite persuasive when we want to be!

Well done and good luck, Dale.

Personal Account of Glasgow Science Centre

As promised primary 6 have written some personal accounts of our visit to the Glasgow Science Centre.  Below you can read what Caitlin and Ciara got up to when they visited the Science Centre.

Last Thursday me and my class went to the Glasgow Science Centre. The main purpose of the trip was to visit the planetarium as our topic is about Space.

As we arrived, we were told to put our coats and jackets away in the cloakroom. After that we were brought up to the first floor. When I first stepped in I gasped! The whole room was full of different experiments. I tried the young to old computer. First you had to take a picture of yourself, and then it turned you old. I got a fright because I looked a lot like my Gran!

Next we went to floor 2.My faverioute thing in floor 2 was the singing bowl. What you had to do was you wet your hands in the water they had put in the brass bowl. Then you rubbed your hands up and down the handle and the bowl played a tune!

Floor 3 was all about the human body and physical health. The best thing for me was the hamster wheel. It was so cool. First you stepped into the wheel. Then you started to run and the wheel would start to move!

Last of all was the planetarium. That was awesome because we stepped into the room and sat down in our seats. I got a fright because the seats were nearly as far back as a bed. That was because the screen was all over the roof. Suddenly the lights dimed and the woman hosting the show started talking about all the different constellations and how there are 88 recognised constellations. Then we went over the order of the planets. The most interesting facts she told us was that no woman has ever been to the moon. The last one was that in the streets with all the bright lights you can only see 300 stars. In the pitch dark countryside you can see over 3,000 stars! Then the lights went on and we all went back to school.

By Ciara.

As we walked through the colossal doorway I started to get extremely excited about our planetarium visit in the afternoon. Slowly we trudged through into the science centre and made our way up to floor 1.

Once we were all upstairs we were allowed to explore. First I looked at big glass box and there were little particles. The particles were made of alcohol. It was amazing I didn’t know how they formed! Next I looked at a blurry picture of a calm woman but when you looked at the picture in the mirror the picture looked like an angry man!

Then we moved on to floor 2. First I went and looked in a glass box then turned the knob. The ink moved! Next was my faveroiute activity the plasma ball so if you put your hand on the top then gently touched someone else’s finger you could see a spark! Using two keys it was possible to make thunder and lightning!

Then we went onto floor 3 it was all about the human body. We learnt all about arthritis and different disabilities

Finally what we had all been waiting for, the planetarium. It was amazing because right in the centre was a big metal ball it looked just like a giant disco ball! Once we were all seated the lights dimmed and the woman hosting the talk walked on to the small stage, as we all gazed up the woman explained the different constellations. Then she went on to give us lots of different amazing facts, like no woman has ever to the moon. The time flew by and soon we were on our way back towards school.
