Outdoor Challenges

We made a portrait of ourselves or another person using twigs and leaves. We made dens for a little toy – the toy had to fit inside and be protected. We made a number square with chalk and sticks (3×3) and all of the numbers had to add to 15. We made the alphabet out of things we found outdoors.

We all had a lovely week!

Primary 7’s Wicked Week

Check out our week… We’ve learned lots!

Literacy

We’ve been learning about poetry through the poem MacCavity. We heard a song that goes along with it – it’s from Cats the musical movie 2019. We drew MacCavity and we labelled our pictures using similies and metaphors from the poem.  We also learned about proper nouns, bossy verbs and common nouns. We enjoyed learning this very much!

Maths and Numeracy

We’ve been revising the 6,7,8 and 9 times table. It’s helped us get better with recalling these tables. We’ve also been learning about prime numbers – you can only divide them by itself and 1! In Number talks we’ve been learning partitioning and compensation. We are improving every day!

A BUSY WEEK OF HOME LEARNING FOR PRIMARY 7!

This week Primary 7 have been very busy learning and working at home! We had an extra special day on Tuesday as we had a video call with some students from both St Margaret’s Academy and Broxburn Academy. As the primary 7’s are unable to attend their transitions as usual, we were lucky enough to ask the high school students some questions via video call and have our queries answered very well. This opportunity helped a lot with worries about going to high school without being able to attend more transition dates and we are hoping to get more chances like this in the coming weeks.

Primary 7’s Work From Home!

The first week back to school in May has been marked by tremendous weather, exciting STEM experiments and an interview with an astronaut. Although we have continued to face challenges and missing our loved ones, Primary 7 have made an amazing effort to remain upbeat and positive throughout their online learning – a massive well done is in order!

Throughout the week Primary 7 have been working on their literacy, numeracy and engaging with lots of online quizzes! We have also been revising our Spanish.

On Wednesday, Primary 7 created their own volcano using water and food dye – we have some mixed results but it was extremely fun!

On Thursday we were lucky enough to be invited to listen to European Space Agency astronaut and former International Space Station crew member, Tim Peake. Following on from the recent cancellation of DataFest20, which included STEM events, we were able to listen to an interactive event with Tim – where the winners of the STEM Challenge asked him some very interesting questions about his expedition.

Tim also showed us some amazing photographs that he took from space and explained the details of his expedition.

The Milky Way
A Thunder Storm

We hope that everyone has had a lovely week and managed to enjoy some of the sunshine! Take care and stay safe everyone!

From, Miss Fraser & Mrs Bell

Primary 7a have had a festive fun filled week!

This week has been extra busy for Primary 7 with so many Christmas activities going on.

On Tuesday we learned the rules we learned the rules of divisibility.

On Wednesday we had our school Christmas carol concert, it was nerve racking at first but we all enjoyed singing and performing in front of a live audience. We also did choral counting, the mystery of the cinema suspect and number talks using divisibility rules with Mrs Heather.

On Thursday Andy Weir came into to do more presentations. The presentations were about swimming, cycling, bagpipes, World War 2 and Air Fix. We also started learning Christmas songs we are going to perform Run Rudolph Run and Santa Claus is coming to town and record them. We also had a visit from Hannah from the SSPCA who explained how to keep your pets and wildlife safe over the winter, for example, if there is a hedgehog going about during the day you can feed it cat food and phone the SSPCA to get it help. She also told us some interesting stories about a man who tried to sell an alligator on GumTree. There was also a lady who bought a pineapple from Asda, she saw the leaves move and inside was a venomous snake.

Another busy week for Primary 7a!

Primary 7 went on a retreat to Dunfermline to learn about St Margaret. We visited St Margaret’s cave where she went to pray and spend time with God. We also got to hold a relic of St Margaret (although this was a 3D print) of her shoulder bone which was very interesting. We also had mass in St Margarets church and a tour, the church was decorated with stations of the cross, a statue of St Margaret with a child, Joseph and stain glass windows of St Margaret.

In our WW2 topic we have begun to draw St Pauls Cathedral as it was bombed during the war. Although St Pauls Cathedral was hit by 500 pound bombs twice it did not fall down. We have also been learning about the Blitz (Blitzkreigg) which meant ‘lightning war’. Robbie and Molly brought in some special artefacts from WW2 including photographs of their family in uniform, badges, ration cards, identity cards and a plaque about the Victoria Cross.

Miss Norman also visited from St Margaret’s Academy, she taught us easier methods to use for subtraction sums we found this very useful.

A Spooktacular Week For P7a!

Another group of P7’s went to St Margaret’s Academy as part of their transition program. First of all we went to the science department where Dr MacCallister showed us how to use the Bunsen Burner’s we also conducted an experiment to find out the best insulator by putting boiling water into a copper can and checked the temperature every 30 seconds to find the best insulator. We also went swimming and played the game to find as many ‘sinkers’ as we could for our team to win the game!

For Halloween on Thursday we took part in a maths challenge to find the mystery putrid pumpkin poisoner who turned to be Bailey Butternut! We have also been practicing for our presentations which take place on Monday and Beth’s dad Andy Weir will be coming to watch us. Harris read us a spooky story called The Curse of Cogston house we are excited to find out what happens at the end. We also typed up our learners statements for parents evening explaining what we have learned so far as well as what we have achieved. At the end of the day we had some Halloween fun by eating sweets and doing some just dance!

Primary 7a Fun Filled Week!

20 students from primary 7 had the chance to take part in a transition day to St Margaret’s Academy. First of all we went to science the teacher was called Dr McAllister, she explained the names and uses of the scientific equipment for example Bunsen burner, beaker, test tube, boiling tube, measuring tube, tripod stand, heat proof mat and thermometer. We conducted an experiment to find out which material – cotton wool, felt and bubble wrap – provided the most insulation. We found that the cotton wool provided the most insulation. We also went swimming, first of all we did a swimming assessment then played some games and did handstands etc.

Miss Norman came into our class on Thursday from St Margaret’s maths department to do a maths starter challenge with us. We had a certain amount of numbers to either subtract, add, multiply or divide to make the numbers from 1-24. However, we did not find out the answer to 22!

We started our World War 2 project by creating a wall display. We drew and cut out silhouettes of bombs, paratroopers, planes and zeppelins.

We also created some autumn tree art we had to draw lines and used yellow, orange and red paint to paint the background. We added glitter and painted on the tree with black paint we think they look very effective!

P7a Weekly Update

This week was very exciting for some primary 7 pupils who were the first to visit St Margaret’s Academy for a transition day. We were lucky enough to visit the science department and use the bunsen burners to conduct an experiment by using a copper can, pouring hot water in it half way and putting different materials around the copper can to investigate how well the materials insulated the water. We also learned about the different equipment used in science and how to illustrate scientific diagrams. We found that the cotton wool was the best material for insulating the water. We were also lucky enough to go swimming in the pool. We did lengths of the pool and were set challenges to do tricks and flips. This was very fun!

On Wednesday we had a circle time and shared our emotions about moving to high-school, problems within the classroom and any worries that we had. We learned that everyone has different problems that we might not know about so to be kind to everyone and include them. It also helped to clear our minds and get things off our chest.

In maths we learned different strategies for multiplication including the grid and formal method. We found that different people found different strategies easier to use highlighting differentiation in our learning journey. We also started a Daily 10 Maths Challenge on multiplication – we have under 7 seconds to answer each question and anyone with 10/10 gets a house point!

P7a Weekly Update!

We are looking forward to visiting St Margarets for our first transition day next Wednesday.

On Thursday we created some poems on a magical garden. We had to include similes and metaphors, for example the river was a ribbon of moonlight and we also drew our moonlit gardens using oil pastels. We also created magazine articles on different topics such as dogs, football, the future and swimming. We also created simile and metaphor posters to show our understanding of this figurative language.

In maths we created tessellation posters, we drew lots of different shapes to create a pattern leaving no gaps. In PE we toke part in a pre-tennis tournament in preparation for our end of topic tournament.

STEM Challenge fun!

We did a STEM challenge with Mr Heather on Thursday. We were building catapults to see if they worked by putting a ball in a cup and seeing how far it could go. We only had elastic bands to tie up the poles so it was quite challenging but fun working in teams. We also did escape the room maths challenge with Mrs Heather in which Maisie, Harris, Ethan, Luke and Isla.M managed to escape!

To celebrate European Language Day we created posters which included different flags and ways of saying hello!

We also had a great time at the movie afternoon watching Inside Out!

On Tuesday we started writing a poem about where we are from which was all about our childhood based on the poem ‘Where I’m From’ by George Ella Lyon.

P7a had a ‘mathy-mathematical’ maths week!

On Thursday, we learned about 2D and 3D shapes in maths, our learning included going on a shape hunt to take photos using the I-pad of shapes in our school environment, naming shapes and their properties and creating shape riddles – can you figure out this one?

‘I have 3 sides of different lengths
I am a 2D shape with 3 sides and 3 vertices, what am I?’
– Scalene Triangle (Maya)

We have been focusing on our Number Talks with Mrs Heather, especially addition. Some of the strategies we used were compensation, partitioning, friendly numbers and rounding up. We also did a clapping game to practice our times tables this was very fun and multiplying 2 digit numbers and 1 digit numbers.

In writing we have been learning how to write a news article these are the things that we need to include: headline, byline, lead, body and tail. Things that might enhance our article are quotes and facts.

We were also introduced to debating this week. The subjects that we debated were seasons that are more fun e.g winter and summer, that school canteens should only sell healthy foods and should students be able to pick their own subjects at school.

Artsy Attraction in P7a

This week we used chalk to draw a tennis racket and tennis ball for our tennis topic. Using chalk was difficult at first as in the past we have used pencil or pen to draw. However the more we used it the more comfortable we felt drawing with it. We also found it challenging to get the correct angle and proportion of the tennis racket as it was an unusual shape and was quite big. Although the tennis racket art work turned out very effective – I’m sure you will agree – and it was very fun.

On Wednesday we created number talk posters with Mrs Heather to show different strategies for mental maths. Callum thought this was useful to remind himself of the strategies he had forgotten from primary 6.

We also did literacy circles for the first time in primary 7 which differed from the previous times such as in primary 5 and 6. We have also been designing a news report in Spanish and have been allocating roles for this project.

Ethan, Harris and Jack had basketball try-outs and will find out on Monday if they make the team but think they done very well!

Our first full week as Primary 7a

As primary sevens one of our responsibilities is to help our P1 buddies. At break we have been helping them to get ready for break by putting on their jackets, shoes and getting their snacks. Luke found that his buddy Bartosz was very shy at first but he helped to bring him out his shell and make new friends. Amie-Lee helped her buddy Sophie to be responsible by picking up litter but have fun while doing so. Ethan felt his buddy  was shy at first but by the end of the week they played together and got along well. Molly helped her buddy Ava to make new friends in her class.

In class this week in art we drew our own tennis players and used paint to create a water colour effect. In maths we did place value challenge and code breakers in order to find out the numbers and break the code. In literacy we wrote our new prayer and learned how to use synonyms and in writing we wrote an imaginative diary entry based on our class novel.

Mrs Heather played a name game with us on Wednesday where we had to remember all of the names of people in our class with an adjective in front of it – Nice Nicola, lovely Laura, Incredible Isla…

Over all we had a great full week back!

Seasons for Growth

St Nicholas are offering the P6 and P7 pupils the opportunity to participate in our Seasons for Growth programme this term. Seasons for Growth is a programme devised to help children to cope with changes in their family through loss or bereavement. The programme was developed in Australia over 20 years ago and is used across the globe to support the emotional wellbeing of young people. We hope to offer the programme to other age groups in the coming months.

Primary 7s Week

Primary 7 have had a very busy week.

Maths:
We have been working on data handling this week. We enjoyed collecting data and deciding what graph or chart to present our findings. We also worked on reading and interpreting data.

Literacy:
In true valentines spirit we analysed and wrote our own love poems. They were very creative and we used techniques like similes, metaphors and personification to enhance our writing.

Topic:
This week we’ve been learning about evacuation. We wrote an information text about evacuation and designed ourselves as evacuees which was lots of fun!

Other:
This week we had a visit from Andy Weir who has been teaching us about presentation skills. He left us with a ‘wee gift- WIIGFT’ which taught us when giving a presentation always include what is in it for them to engage the audience.

We’ve also been working on evaluating How Good is Our School (HGIOURS). We self assessed how good our school is at relationships and identified what we could do to improve.

Prizewinners’ lunch with Mrs Brown

The winners of the St Nicholas Reading and Writing competitions had a lovely lunch with our Head Teacher, Mrs Brown, today.   They went on a bus to the other end of Broxburn, had a delicious lunch, and were treated to a book of their choice.  Thank you very much to our local partners, Glow Worm Books, for looking after our prizewinners so well and for sponsoring these competitions for us.

And well done again to our fabulous readers and writers.

Eco Vertical Learning Group – Big Schools’ Birdwatch

The Eco Group did the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch today, noting the different types of birds that are in the Broxburn area, before we uploaded our results to find the Top 10 birds around St Nicholas.  We then worked to create bird snappers – older pupils working alongside younger pupils.  Thanks to our P7, P6 and P5s who took such good care of our younger St Nicholas children, working with such care, skill and patience.  The snappers were very fiddly to put together but we got there with them. Well done everyone!

St Nicholas Writing Competition – The Judging Begins

Our Pupil Council began the judging process today, looking at entries for the St Nicholas Writing Competition.  Here they are hard at work reading the entries.  The standard of writing was very, very high.  Winners for the both the reading and the writing competitions will be announced on Friday 11th of January at assembly.   Thanks Pupil Council for your help and giving us your views and insights into what makes a great story.

Gymnastics Champs!

Huge congratulations to gymnasts, Abbie Thomson, Anna Keogh and Chloe Laing – members of the St Nicholas Team – who scooped the award of 2nd place in the Scottish Gymnastics Primary Schools Finals in Perth last weekend, where they competed against schools from all over Scotland!  Well done also to Anna Keogh who took the award for 2nd Place for her individual performance.

We are all so proud of you girls – well done to all of  you!

Talking about learning…

Thanks to everyone who came to our curriculum cafe today to discuss their children’s learning with them over tea and a biscuit.   Our St Nicholas children were very proud to show their families evidence of all their hard work and effort.  Our cafe was very, very busy today – thank goodness our Pupil Council and parent partners were on hand to help.  Thanks also to Avril Fitzpatrick and Agnes Boyle – ladies from the local community who organise our teas and coffees and who we couldn’t do without.

Our next curriculum cafe will be on Friday the 4th of May.

Well done and congratulations!

A huge well done and congratulations to St Nicholas Primary School girls who took part in the West Lothian Schools Gymnastics Competition last week at Craigswood Sports Centre, Livingston.  Our Level 3 team came first across the whole of West Lothian and were awarded best individuals too.  All our girls were a credit to themselves, their parents and St Nicholas Primary School.  We are all very proud of your achievements!

Our buddies came to visit!

Today our Primary 7 buddies came to our classroom. Some of us listened to our buddies read a story that we chose from our library. We then had a chat about what happened in the story. Our buddies were fantastic readers!

Some of the buddies played number games with us too. We enjoyed learning about dot patterns and playing dominoes. We played other number games using ten frames, numicon and number lines. It was great fun! Here are some photos of our afternoon…

Political Parties in Primary 7

This week Primary 7B have been developing their knowledge of political parties in the UK and the 2017 General Election. They have used evidence selectively to research current, social, political and economic issues. They can describe what a manifesto is and its purpose.
We are looking forward to tomorrows Election Day in Primary 7 where we will all be given the opportunity to cast our votes.

A Puppet Show in P1!!

This week Primary 1 created their very own puppet shows based on The Three Little Pigs. The boys and girls made fantastic sock puppets and other props so that they could retell the story. We then presented our shows to our Primary 7 buddies and the boys and girls from the nursery. We really enjoyed showing off all our hard work!! The nursery children enjoyed visiting our classroom!

Author Visit – David Goutcher

Today, Second level children (P5-P7) enjoyed a visit from David Goutcher, who writes spy novels for children.  David spoke about his life and previous careers as a policeman, secret agent and games developer.  The novels we looked at were very interactive – with layers of technology
embedded within them – and the boys and girls were engrossed.  P5 children said:

“I was shocked when he told us that he was an agent, and all the things that he had done like going undercover and trying out lots of different gadgets.” Hollie

“The visit made me think more about how technology is developing and all the things we can do with it – how things can come alive”. Owen

“I thought that all the technology used in the book was really interesting because you can see a lot more than just looking at a book.”  Dominik

Eco Team aka Park Designers.

Today, some of our Eco Team met with Christine Lee from Sutcliffe Play as a new park is going to be built in the Badger’s Brook area of Broxburn. She gave us free reign to design what we think the park should look like.   As you can imagine, this was very exciting, after all, it is not every day that you get to do this.

To do this, we worked  in groups to choose themes for the park.  Popular themes included, animals, the zoo and nature.  We drew a plan of the park and then used our imaginations to draw what we think the park should look like. Our designs are fantastic !  Christine will now take these away and will choose the best parts from each in her final design. We will keep you all posted as to what the park will look like when we see the final plan.

P7 Tobacco Education Showcase

Primary 7 would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who came along to support this event. We really enjoyed sharing our learning with you.
Special thanks to NEIL GORMAN from PIGGY PRINT who made our banner for us and MICHELLE SUTHERLAND from WLDAS for all her help. Thanks also to RAB SNEDDON who came along from NHS SCOTLAND.

Contemporary Art at St Nicholas

Today, Primaries 4 to 7 enjoyed a fantastic visit from the travelling art gallery. The exhibits were all about work and routine which made us think about our own routines in a new way. We loved the people-sized sculptures dressed in bright prints and the ‘workers’ happiness’ graphs. Thank you once again to the travelling gallery for giving us the opportunity to think differently about things!

P1 and P7 ‘s library visit.

Image result for kids and books clip art

Today we had a wee wander  over to Broxburn Library with some of our P7 buddies. For some of us, it was our first visit to the library since it moved from the Main Street.  We all agreed that the new library is lovely !

What did we do ?

We met one of the lovely librarians who read us a story called ‘  Wee Granny and the Ceilidh’ by Elizabeth Walker. This was chosen specially for us as the librarian had heard that we had been learing about Scotland.   After the story, the librarian spoke to us about library and what we can do whilst we were there.  We didn’t realise that we can visit any library with our card and even pop along on a Saturday between 10.00 and 12.00 for fun craft activities.

It was a very enjoyable visit !  Special thanks to Diane for having us over .

We have just been notified that the open evening for parents of P7 children wishing to attend St Margaret’s Academy is on Thursday the 12th of January.  It starts at 6.30pm with a welcome presentation, followed by a tour round the school where parents will have a chance to sample some St Margaret’s learning experiences.  A poster will follow with more information, but in the meantime, please put this date in your diaries.

Many thanks.

It’s Almost Christmas!

The whole school is buzzing in the lead up to Christmas. The trees are up, classrooms are decorated, and there’s lots of elves keeping an eye on the classrooms!

We have a few more exciting things planned before the holidays though!

Friday 9th December – Dress Down Day

The children are invited to come to school dressed in their home clothes (or Christmas clothes if they like). Please can each child bring £1 if they are dressing down?

dress-sown-day

Wednesday 14th December – Christmas Jumper Day

This year the school is joining in with the national event, raising money for Save The Children. The children (and staff) are invited to wear a Christmas jumper on this day. If you don’t have one, don’t worry! You can  just jazz up a normal jumper with tinsel, or safety pin baubles on. There are lots of ideas online. Please can each child donate £1 on this day if they are dressing up. It is for such a great cause. If you would like to read more about it, please go to www.christmasjumperday.org.

Thank you for your support!

40th Jubilee Mass and Walk Down Memory Lane

On Friday the community took part in our 40th Jubilee Mass and following that, there was a reception with a chance to view old St Nicholas memorabilia.  St Nicholas staff and friends of the school from the past mingled with the new, and a great time was had by all.

Many thanks to the parish of SS John Cantius and Nicholas for gifting the school with a beautiful new chalice to celebrate this important occasion.

Busy Week!!

St Nicholas are very excited for their super busy week next week for the opening of the new hall and our Jubilee concert.

Today we had some rehearsals, and everyone sounds amazing!

If possible, please could everyone have a last practice of their song (they know what they are doing) and the Welcome Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Waxw4GB5K38) , over the weekend.

Also, just a reminder that we would please like all children to come to school wearing a white shirt and their school tie on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week.

Thank you in advance, and hope you have a lovely weekend.

Hibernian Persevere Tour

We had a motivational visit from Hibernian Football Club today to speak about how perseverance helped them to win the Scottish Cup. We know that the word ‘Persevere’ is a verb which means “to continue… even in the face of difficulty.”  Learning can be tricky at times, but with all the work we have done around growth mindsets, we know that mistakes show us where we need to improve and can lead to deeper learning.

We also saw the Scottish Cup and, those children who wanted to, got our pictures taken with it.

Many thanks to Hibernian Football Club staff for coming to see us today!

Skeleton Challenge

Primary 7 undertook a spooky challenge today.  Our challenge was to make a representation of a human skeleton – in groups – that was made purely from natural materials.  We used only what had fallen from the trees (leaves, twigs) or what was lying around the playground (stones, rocks).  We had a time limit of 20 minutes to complete this task.  During this task we helped developed skills of: teamwork; determination; sharing (resources); being kind; construction skills; listening skills; communication and negotiation skills.

The teams that won were Team 4 from Mrs Heather’s class and Team C from Mrs Bell’s class.  Mrs McGuire will provide a prize for these groups, later in the week.

Well done on completing the challenge everyone.

St Nicholas is celebrating Halloween…

on Friday the 28th of October.  St Nicholas pupils can, if they wish, take part in the traditional Scottish activity of ‘guising’ for Halloween on Friday of this week.  Mums and dads, please be sensible and make sure that costumes aren’t too frightening – we don’t want our younger children to be scared.  Thank you.

P7 Highlights

Our biggest highlight of the week has been our school trip to Livingston Football Stadium. We got to sample lots of delicious foods and people told us how to get a job when we are older. Our favourites were the white chocolate made with popping candy and spices and The Larder cooking school with all of the bread, brownies and pasta. We also liked the man who made fruit and veg origami. There was Bob from Herriot Watt. He blew bubbles that landed on us and didn’t pop. We had a great time here and it is an experience that we will remember.
We have done a think outside the box Thursday which is when we get a riddle and the first person to figure it out wins. It is good for a first thing in the morning thing because it gets your brain to work. We enjoyed this very much because it makes a good competition.
On Wednesday we had P.E and we were doing a bleep test. The whole class did very well and lots of us lost our breath. We also played a game called illuminator which is when we have to pick up cones when the teacher says to. For some of us we had two sessions of physical education because 4 boys also went to a cross country. Michael came 2nd, Logan came 3rd, Eoin came 17th and Aiden came 21st.
We have been reading a book called Nemesis by Catherine McPhail. We wrote what we thought would happen next in the story. Everybody had brilliant predictions of what they thought might happen. We are looking forward to finding out what might happen next in the story.
This week we did big maths beat that for the first time in primary 7 everyone had quite high scores.
We are looking forward to another jam packed week next week.

P7 Career Conference

Primary 7 had a great morning at the West Lothian Career Conference in Livingston Football Stadium. The focus was Hospitality, Food and Drink, Hygiene and Engineering processes within food and drink. We all enjoyed sampling the smoothies, cakes, scones, pasta, unusual fruits and vegetables. We learned how to set a table and a little bit about silver service. We watched a cookery demonstration and some of us tasted mussels for the first time.thumbnail_fullsizerender-1

P7 War time Poems

Prisoner of War
By Caitlin Healy

Caged within the encircling wire
Heart mind and soul afire
Afire with longing for things of home
The glorious heaths once more to roam

Thoughts come springing from far away
Of loved ones kiss, of children’s play
Visions of comrades sharing the fight
Clothed in khaki a strange garb for a knight

Yet each one a crusader against power and lust
Till evil is humbled to the dust
Then free once more to roam

Through flowered fields to an English home
All heartbreak and sorrow past
Living in peace
Perfect at last

Soldiers Farewell
By Aimee Turner

I’ve saddled up, and dropped me hooch,
I’m going to take the gap,
My tour of Duty’s over mates,
And I won’t be coming back

I’m done with digging shell scrapes,
And laying out barbed wire,
I’m sick of setting claymore mines,
And coming under fire.

So no more fire support base,
And no more foot patrols,
And no more eating ration packs,
And sleepin’ in muddy holes.

I’ve fired my last machine gun,
And ambushed my last track,
I’m sick of all the army brass,
And I sure ain’t coming back.

I’ll hand my byonet to the clerk,
He ain’t seen one before,
And clean my rifle one more time,
And return it to the store.

Wartime Poem
Found by Michael Beagley

Looking Around
The battle scene was harsh
Bodies lay scattered on the ground
With the nauseating scent of blood
Surrounding me
I can hardly see
For smoke blinds my eyes
And as I look around, my heart sinks
And fills with sorrow
I want this battle to end
Noises of gunfire hurt my eardrums
Piercing and killing lives
The images of falling
Scar me for life
This is the place of death
And I try hard to keep hope.

P7 Highlights

Here are the highlights that Primary 7 have chosen to blog about.
We all had lots of fun teaching our buddies Spanish.
” I really enjoyed it because the buddies looked like they were having fun.” Nicole
“I liked when they showed us the game they had been learning, it was like what’s the time Mr Fox” Kirsten

As part of our World War 2 topic we have been researching the following: Rationing, Women in the War, Scotland’s Blitz, Home guard, Anne Frank and Evacuation.

In Number talks we have been concentrating on the following strategies: partitioning, adjusting, landmark numbers, making tens, near doubles and compensation.

In RME we have been learning about the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We have been comparing their accounts of events in the Bible.

We have been learning how to write a parody.

In Maths we have been working with factors. A factor is a number that can be divided into another number with no remainders. Next week we are going to look at Prime Numbers. We also learned the rules of divisibility. Some of us tested our parents on this! We are enjoying chanting in the counting choir.

In Music we have been learning the recorder with Mrs Steele. Some of us took part in Mr Bruce’s Chanter workshop. We are proud of Finlay who has just started playing in the West Lothian School’s Pipe band.

We are continuing to look at the artworks of Kandinsky and we have enjoyed recreating our own pieces of art in the same style.

P7B are really enjoying their class novel Nemesis by Catherine Macphail. There is lots of mystery and lots of twists in the story so far. It is keeping us on the edge of our seats!!!!
” I like it because it has lots of suspense.” Caitlin
” I like it because there are lots of wow words in it.” Ellie
” I like it because it is an interesting and determining story” Jack

P7A are reading Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy. This has been highly recommended by Caleb Heather.
“It’s a wee bit mysterious because we don’t know who is behind the mask…..yet.” Jamie
“It’s a very interesting read.” Nicole.

P7 boys took part in football trials for the school team this week. The first tournament is this afternoon at the Albyn. Good Luck Boys!

We are ending the week by helping out at the P1 Macmillan Coffee morning.

Super Spanish in Primary 1.

Image result for spanish flag clipartToday we had great fun learning alongside our primary 7 buddies when we played a game in Spanish called ‘ Un, dos tres  Calabaza’, (One, two, three pumpkin) in celebration of ‘International Day of Languages’.  We had lots of fun playing  this game  as it helped us to learn how to count in Spanish.  We also played number games that our p7 buddies made especially for us.  We love learning Spanish in Primary 1. We can say hello, goodbye, good morning, how are you and are learning the names of colours and numbers.

Muchas Gracias to Senorita Alvarez por ayundarnos and our lovely friends in P7 for helping us to learn how to count in Spanish.

Fantastic Mr Fox!

We’re all just back from a fantastic afternoon, watching a travelling theatre company perform ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’.  In celebration of one of our children’s favourite authors, Roald Dahl, all our boys and girls from Nursery to P7, watched the production.  At St Nicholas Primary, we love Roald Dahl because there are always morals in his stories and great characterisation, making them suitable for young and old.

Anime fun

Over the past few weeks primary 7A have been learning about anime and making their  own characters. Our characters are really creative and inventive. After that, we made our own manga comics in groups.

Katriona – I thought that was a lot of fun because we made our own characters.

Rosie-  In my opinion anime is really creative and fun and it was the best art lesson we have had so far.

Carrick-I thought it was fun learning to draw the proper anime features.

Egg-cellent Air Resistance

In science, primary 7 have been learning about air resistance. This week we carried out an investigation using bin bags, cups, eggs & string. We each in a group of 4/5 made 3 different size parachutes: small, medium & large to test which would have the greatest air resistance. Before the investigation we (the majority of the class) made a hypothesis that the small parachute would have the least air resistance. From the investigation we found that the hypothesis was correct & the larger the parachute, the greater the air resistance.

image1 (4)

Jasiu thought it was quite fun making the parachute & dropping them to see which one would land first.

Ellie thought that the experiment was good and she enjoyed using the eggs to test our theory.

P7 Broxburn Transition Camp

Hi everyone!

St Nicholas boys and girls have been having a great time at camp.  We’ve been busy non-stop with abseiling, playing laser quest, problem solving, the 3G swing, building shelters, and sitting round the camp fire with hot chocolate at night.  Our rooms are warm and cosy and we’re getting to know lots of children who’ll be with us in Broxburn Academy next year.  Our last night is tonight and we’re having a disco and movie night tonight.  Mrs McGuire is really proud of all of us: we’ve worked hard; taken part in all activities; and been an absolute credit to our parents and St Nicholas.

Photos will be uploaded when we get out of the wilds and back to civilisation.

See you all soon.

Book Week Update.

Today was a super day with lots of great things happening.  What did we do ?

Lots of classes completed their book themed  wall/classroom door.

We brought in books to swap with a friend in our class.  We all went home with a new book.

A different teacher read a story to us.

P5 played ‘Book Cluedo’.  We now have an idea who took Mrs Brown’s books ! All will be revealed tomorrow.

Book Week Update

We have been having a fantastic week this week, celebrating book week.

We have been engaging in lots of activities all week, and still have plenty to go.

This week we have been enjoying lots of paired reading (reading to others in the school). Primary 1 particularly enjoyed the primary 7 boys and girls reading to them.

Primary 4-7 have been going on a ‘Cluedo Quest’. Someone stole all the books from Mrs Brown’s office! They have been answering clues, leading them all around the school, to help them work out who did it!

We have been receiving some amazingly creative photos for our Extreme Reading competition. They are all on display in the gym hall. We have had children reading whilst hula hooping; upside down; in the dogs bed; on the moon; standing on top of a giant peach; on a horse; in a tree and many more!

Our teachers have been challenging us this week as well. There is a display in the gym hall, with lots of teachers hiding behind their favourite books. It is really tricky to work out who is who!

We have all been working as a class to create an imaginative display based on a favourite book, or a number of favourite books.  We can’t wait to see which class wins this competition on Friday.

We still have many more activities to do as well!

Tomorrow (Thursday) we are participating in a book swap in the classes. Every child has been asked to bring in a book they no longer want, or read, and it will be swapped with someone else, meaning we all go home with a new book to enjoy.

Also tomorrow our teachers are all swapping classes to read a story to another class.

But the thing we are most looking forward to is the chance to dress up as our favourite book character on Friday (Nursery is on Thursday)! We have been discussing costumes all week. There is a prize for the most imaginative costume from each year group.

Keep checking back for more updates!

Skills 4 Bills

On Thursday  P7 had a visit from the Royal Bank Of Scotland. We were learning how to handle money and bills for later life. During the afternoon we were all given jobs and a salary and had to decide how to spend our money.  Some of us manage our money well and stayed within our budgets but others  went into debt and had to pay the bank back. Some of us had jobs which paid a high salary and  others were paid much less.

With our money we had to visit  different stations to buy things to live these stations included : the Tax and pensions office,a home, some transport, household  bills , unexpected events, a holiday, entertainment and finally we visited the accountants to see if we had any money left.

Sana thought that it was a good experience and that all the visitor were very nice but very persuasive. Sana got talked into buying more than she had planned to.

Taylor thought that it was very educational  because it teaches us how to handle money.

Murray enjoyed looking at all the different jobs.

Nicole enjoyed being an astronaut.

Carrick thought it was a really educational experience because it showed us how to handle out money for our future lives. The first time he went round he went into debt but the second time he managed his money better and stayed within his means.

We all enjoyed this experience and learned lots about managing our money and not spending it all on the thing that we don’t need.

A big thank you to Mr Heather and his colleagues for coming to our school.

By Sophie and Rachael

Dangers Of Second Hand Smoking

For the last few weeks Primary 7 have had Michelle and Janet from the West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service coming in to talk to about Drug and Alcohol Education. Over the past three weeks we have looked at what is in a cigarette, the harmful side-effects of smoking, what might happen to our bodies if we smoke, the pressures we might face from peers, the effects of second hand smoke.

This week we focused on  looking at the dangers of  second  hand smoking and how it could affect us. First we started with a group discussion about smoking free zones. Then after that we played a game all about where you can find second hand smoking. The two main places you can easily breath in smoke are our homes and cars. When you are outside and somebody walks past smoking you can only see the smoke for about ten to twenty seconds, after that it disappears from sight however it will stay in the air for around five hours. You don’t know if you are breathing in this smoke because you can’t see it, that is why second hand smoke is so dangerous.

After we played the game we had a evaluation to fill in and it was about what we have learned, what we liked and disliked and how we felt about the whole smoking lessons.  The government are planing to that by 2034 less that 5% of the Scottish population will smoke.  We were given a pledge  about Smoke Free Homes & Zones to take home and discuss with our parents. In the leaflet it has information about second hand smoking, what are the dangers to children and how you can protect your family. This pledge will hopefully help stop 95% for the population in Scotland from smoking and will make a lot of our  lives better.

Everyone in P7 enjoyed learning about the Chemicals, Smoking Sue and the Dangers Of Second Hand Smoking. We would like to say a big thank you to the West Lothian Drug and Alcohol team for coming in to help us.

Smokey Sue Visits Primary 7

Today after lunch, P7a had a visit from the West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service. They let us know about the dangers of smoking, and how it affects our bodies, as well as the drugs in the actual cigarettes like nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide. We found out there are between 4000-5000 chemicals in each cigarette.

Smoking 055 Smoking 050 Smoking 052Today we done an experiment with Smoky Sue! Smoky Sue  is a plastic doll with no arms and no legs and really showed us how cigarettes effect our lungs.During the experiment we lit a cigarette outside and pumped the doll so she could breath in the smoke. After the experiment we examined the liquid that would be in her lungs from clear tap water to yellow tar water. This showed us what is going into our lungs if we smoke.

After we played a game to talk about how we might react in situations where we might feel pressure to smoke. This helped us to see what we could do if these situations arise in the future.

So far we have really enjoyed learning about the effects of smoking and are working on some ‘Stop Smoking’ posters. These posters might even be featured in the local health center to encourage people to stop smoking,

Taylor and Ellie

primary 7 gymnastics star!

Taylor in primary 7a has recently appeared in the west Lothian courier for his gymnastics and has been interviewed by the west lothian courier and his own words are in the paper! He also has recently won an award for gymnastics for being one of the people who went to the Celtic cup in march this year in Ireland. The Celtic cup included Scotland,Wales,Ireland and Northern Ireland. Scotland won and thats why Taylor won his trophy!we are very proud of his achievements and we all hope he keeps up the good work! well done Taylor!!!!

Dynamic Data

On Thursday the 10th of December primary 7 visited Dynamic Earth as part of the Big Data Event.  Data is information stored in an electronic device or computers.

When we arrived we split into three groups, one of which went off to do an interview with Jude Spence and the other two had a tour of Dynamic Earth. First on the tour we found out about the Big Band. We went into a time machine to travel back 6.2 billion years, surprisingly it didn’t take us that long! We all thought the time machine was very interesting as we got lots of facts about how our Solar System began.

Next we moved onto find out about the formation of Planet Earth and how ice formed the mountains, rivers and valleys. We even got to see and touch a huge iceberg!

Afterwards we went a flight to find out about the Rainforest. This was most people’s favourite part of the day as the it was quite scary and we loved wearing our 3d glasses.

Ten people were chosen by the teachers  to go to and answer questions and got a once in a  life time experience in the data  dome. The Data Dome  is a large black sphere and projectors shined on the sphere which created circles to go round showing the trending data on Social media such as Twitter. They also showed how some of the data is used. Rachael learnt that data came from many different places and  Sophie  learnt that data is formed by many different ways.

To finish the day we also got a chance to use some Google Cardboard, this is like Google glasses. It was so much fun and everyone was laughing at each others reactions.

Finally we would like to say a big thank you to Jude Spence for organising the day for us, we all really enjoyed ourselves and would love to go back.

The Mobius Strip P7

This morning, Mrs Casey (from St. Margarets) came to visit P7A. Firstly, we played a game, identifying different types of numbers – we had to identify if the number was: odd, even, multiple of ten or a multiple of five. Faith thought the game was really enjoyable because it really got your brain thinking because some numbers went in more than one category. Rachael thought it was quite challenging because we had to come up with definitions for odd and even which is quite hard to put into words.

Next, we looked at the Mobius Strip, which was invented by the famous mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius. To complete our investigation, we were given 3 strips of paper, and 3 stickers. First of all, we created a loop with 1 strip and put 1 twist into the loop. We predicted what we thought would happen when we cut the strip in half. Ellie thought that it would make 2 separate loops. The outcome was 1 loop in the form of the infinity sign. We then tried this with 2 twists, and predicted what would happen. Sana thought it would be double the infinity sign. Ellie thought there would be 4 loops on each side. The outcome was double infinity sign. With the 3rd piece of paper we made one

with our own amount of twists to investigate what would happen. We also discussed how the Mobius strip is used in the world, it was used in: art and fan-belt in cars.
