A great week of learning in Primary 3 and 3/2!

Hiya!

This week in numeracy we have been learning about capacity. This is how much something can hold. With a partner we made containers with a piece of card and filled them with rice. Then we used scales to see how much our containers could hold!

We learnt about Ascension Day. This is when Jesus went up to Heaven after 40 days on Earth.

In literacy we have been learning about writing narrative texts. This needs a title, orientation, complication and resolution.

In spelling this week we went outside. We drew the alphabet with chalk and played jumping games to spell our words.

For our Ancient Egyptian topic, we have been learning about hieroglyphs. It has so many characters! We tried to write our names.

Thanks for reading our blog this week! See you next time 🙂

Our week in P3 and P3/2

Another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Read all about it below.

In numeracy, we have been learning about length.  We have been measuring different objects and lines.  We know that you measure in millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.  We know that millimetres is the smallest unit of measurement. We measured lots of art straws and tried to create a picture with them.

In literacy, we have been continuing to learn about writing narrative pieces of writing.  This week we wrote about a Pharaoh in a desert. We have also continued to learn about speech marks and when to use them.  We have also been spotting the silly word this week in a passage.

This is health week for us and we have been trying to do the daily mile. We also had a taster session of Judo which was great fun. This week we also thought about things that we are grateful for. Then we worked together to create a poster about what is most important to us in St Nicholas.

In Fun Start Fitness, we were learning about the importance of Water.  We know we need to drink 2 litres a day and that it is the most important resource on earth. We enjoyed playing team games and encouraging each other.

In RERC, we have been learning about the importance of Mary and other names that she is called.

In our Egyptian topic, we started to find out about some of the Egyptian Gods.  We also presented our group posters about the Egyptians to our class.

We are looking forward to our Monday holiday. Thank you for reading our post.

Our week in P3 and P3/2

What a busy week we have had in P3 and P3/2.  Read all about our learning below.

In literacy, we were learning about speech marks and speech bubbles.  We know only the words that a person would say out loud goes inside the speech mark.  This week we started to learn about Narrative writing.  We know that it needs a title, orientation, complication and resolution.

In numeracy, we have been learning about more about fractions.  This week we were focusing on tenths.  Lots of people think a tenth would be a bigger number but it is actually a smaller amount of an object or a number as it has to be split into ten equal parts.

In art, we created an Egyptian pyramid drawing.  We painted the background to create the sunset then we drew the pyramid following instructions.  We then stuck the pyramids onto the background.  We think they look great.

In health and wellbeing we were thinking about things that we do for ourselves.  For example, reading, drawing, going outside and playing music.

In RERC we were thinking about Mary and why she is important.

In PE this week we were doing high jumps. We had to jump very high.  P3 started Fun start fitness this week with James Pegg.  We were learning all about encouragement and the importance of team work and communication.  The games we played were fun.

In our Egyptian topic we were doing some research this week using books, Ipads and laptops.

Thank you for reading our post!

First week back in P3 and P3/2

We are all glad to be back at school after a lovely break. Read all about our busy week below.

In literacy, we have been making predictions. We know we might not always get it correct but we should use what we see and hear to help us with our predictions. We have been learning about the difference between fact and opinion.  We know facts are true and have evidence to back them up.  An opinion is something we feel or think.

In numeracy, we have been learning about fractions.  This week we learned about halves.  We know how to find half of a shape or number. We have also been doing some esti mystery challenges were we need to estimate what we think we can see then we get clues to help us with our answers.

In health and wellbeing, we have been talking about trusted adults.  We updated our trusted adults so that we know who we can speak to in school if we have any worries.  We also talked about who is in our ‘backup team’.  We know we can have people from our family, friends and clubs we go to.  We also made a worry box and calm corner in our classroom for us to use.

Our new topic is the Egyptians.  We talked about what we know and what we would like to learn. We can’t wait to learn all about the Egyptians.

In art, we used cotton buds to create a cherry blossom tree.  They look beautiful as we used different shades of pink.

In PE, we have been playing dodge ball and eliminator and started some races as we are doing athletics this term. In Music, we were singing a song about categories. We were learning about rhythms and using our body to make sounds.

Primary 3 and 3/2.

Lets hear a bit about our learning this week!

On Monday we had our outdoor learning lesson. We planted sweet peas in pots with soil or cotton wool. We are going to see which grows the fastest.

In numeracy this week we have been counting by 5s and 10s. We have been learning our multiples of 5’s and 10’s. We have been learning different strategies to do this; arrays, number line jumps, making groups, and more.

In literacy this week we practiced our spelling words, handwriting, and reading.

In PE this week we were playing dodgeball and hoola hooping.

In IT this week we learnt how to make PowerPoints. We learnt how to add a title, pictures, choose a design, create a new slide, and then save it.

We did a fun Art lesson called still life. We used different materials; paint, chalk, and pencils.

In music we learnt about high notes and low notes.

Thankyou,

From P3 and 3/2.

A week in P3 and P3/2

In PE we were working on our teamwork skills by playing Dodgeball.

Yesterday, we learnt about St Patrick and we created some mosaic shamrocks using tissue paper in different shades of green.

We wrote fantastic beginnings this week working on making sure we included who, what, where and when in our introduction to an imaginary piece of writing.

We were working on putting things in alphabetical order and working on our dictionary skills finding different words and their meaning.

In Maths we were working on the 4 times table, learning how if we multiply by 2 we can find our answer to the 4 times table by doubling it. We were making arrays to help us too.

We also practised rounding numbers up or down to make them friendly numbers. This makes it easier for us to add or subtract.

Some of us went to Mass this week, and practised for making our Sacrament of Reconciliation which we are making on Tuesday night. This week we have been learning two songs to sing during this.

In Music, we were learning different actions to songs.

In Spanish, we were practising our numbers up to 20 by singing songs.

We continued reading our class novel, The Twits.

In our topic lesson, we found out about the Greendykes Bings and we were discussing the different jobs to do with shale mining. We were acting out characters with different jobs and guessing what character our classmates were, by asking them different questions such as how many hours do you work and how much are you paid a week?

Some bunnies love Primary 2

Literacy

This week our new sound was ‘ff’. Our reading task this week was to make predictions about our books looking at the pictures and words for clues.  Our writing this week was an exposition piece in which we would explain why we would be responsible pet owners.

Numeracy

Our focus this week was recognising and writing number words. We were interpreting graphs and find errors in our data handling work and used clues to find the answer to another Esti Mystery.

Science

Our new science topic is magnets. We used our lovely new class box to explore our classroom and find magnetic and non-magnetic items. We also thought about items that used magnets in everyday life and a few pupils brought in examples from home.

Art

With the start of Spring we decided to draw and paint some cute bunnies for our gallery wall. We were very pleased with them.

Technology

This week we used the laptops – we named the various parts, we spoke about how to care for them, we logged on and then opened a word document. We then typed some text using different colours and sizes of font.

Our week in P2

Literacy

This week we learned how to use magic e with words with the e vowel sound. Our writing this week was inspired by a short film called ‘Bubbles’  where the children told the story of this animation.  Our reading tasks this week focused on the characters and sequencing of our books. We continued with our word boost words this week: jiggled, fortress, abbey, particularly, fiddlesticks and fainted.

Numeracy

This week P2 were introduced to the Esti – Mysteries and had to estimate a number after listening to some clues to help them.  We continued to use bundles of tens to help us to subtract numbers to 50 and we practised counting through the decades. We played time bingo to help us to recognise the times on the clock faces.

HWB

Each day this week we completed an activity to promote awareness of Children’s Mental Health Week. We focused upon growth as we develop our skills mentally and physically over time. We thought about the changes we had already encountered in life and changes that may happen to us in the future. We decided upon possible jobs for the future based upon our skills and talents.

Linlithgow Palace

This week we thought about life in the past at the Palace and security to keep the Royal Family safe. We practised writing our own signature with a quill and the signatures of the Royals. We discovered that secret codes were often used to keep the Royals safe at the Palace so we tried to write an important message backwards! We used construction materials to try to make a model of the Palace with a drawbridge and a fountain. We used the internet to access a 3D model of a statue from the fountain and used this artefact to make a detailed sketch.

Linlithgow Palace by Historic Environment Scotland on Sketchfab

RERC

This week we spoke about the liturgical calendar and the colours linked to the holy events. We looked very closely at the objects on our class altar and discussed the meaning behind them.

Winter Olympics

We discussed some of the events at the current Winter Olympics in China and the possibility that we may be a competitor one day as we may have a hidden talent that we have not discovered yet! We tried to make the Olympic Rings using materials in our classroom and we drew a picture of the cute mascot called Bing Dwen Dwen.

Our week in P3 and P3/2

We have working hard in P3 and P3/2 this week.

We have been continuing to learn about time.  We have been learning about quarter to and quarter past on a digital and analogue clock.  We also learned about 5 minute intervals on the clock.

We have been learning about verbs.  We know they are action and doing words, for example running, jumping and swimming.  We played some games.  We enjoyed playing verb charades.

This week we have been learning about friends.  We thought about what makes a good friend and then wrote acrostic poem.  We know acrostic poem do not need to rhyme.

In RERC, we learned about the parables stories of the lost coin, sheep and son.  We discussed how we would feel if we lost something and how we would feel when we found it.  We also thought about the message from the parable stories that God loves us all.

In outdoor learning we made photo frames using twigs.  We worked well with a partner.

In health and wellbeing we have been learning about the yellow zone of regulation.  We know we can be feeling silly, nervous, excited or frustrated. We talked about what our face and body would be doing and how people around us would be feeling.

We also learned about the phases of the moon.  We know the moon takes 28 days to change. We know the names of some of the phases of the moon.  For example, new moon, crescent, wanning gibbous and last quarter.

Thank you for reading our blog post.

100 days of learning in Primary 2!

There was a special day at school this week!We counted all the days on the computer and on Monday it was our 100th day in Primary 2. To celebrate we had to work as a team to build a paper cup tower with 100 cups. One cup for each day of awesome learning! The best part was ….knocking the tower down.

Literacy

This week we were using magic e with u to build new words. Our narrative writing this week was based upon a different version of the Three Little Pigs where the pigs were mean and the wolf was very kind.  In reading we were set tasks to understand the reading and had to choose which sentences were true or false.  We also collected more words for our word boost wall: slithered, lurked, squealed, villagers, pace and bragged.

Numeracy

This week were using bundles of tens and single straws on our place value mats to find the answers to subtraction within 30. Using bundles of ten or dienes rods made it easier to work out the answer. We found out more about the history of time and learned that Ancient Egyptians used obelisks to tell the time over 4000 years ago. We practised drawing the correct size of hands on clock faces to show o’clock and half past.

Health & Well-being

We discussed the ‘power of yet’ to help us have a growth mindset and to realise that although we may find some tasks challenging that with practise and a positive attitude we will learn these new skills. We made warm fuzzies to help with our resilience. If we are having a bad day we can hold our warm fuzzies or talk to them and we will feel much better.

RERC

This week we enjoyed participating in the online Candlemas Day Mass. We could identify the important items on the altar that we discussed the day before such as the font, the lectern and the tabernacle.

Social Studies – Linlithgow Palace

This week we learned about the first Royals who lived at Linlithgow Palace when it was first built 597 years ago! The Stuart kings seemed to like the name James. We also found out about the famous lady called Mary, Queen of Scots. We learned that the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland and spotted them on a video of the Palace fountain. We learned about the Lion Rampant and spotted them on the crests at the entrance to the Palace. We then made some delicious royal biscuits that were very fancy and fit for a Royal banquet at the Palace.

What’s new in P2 ?

Literacy

This week we learned more about ‘magic e’ and how it changes the sound in words with i and o. We created a report on cats for our writing assessment and we challenged ourselves by learning a poem in Scots about a chicken called ‘Choukie Hen.’

Numeracy

We used a book called the ‘Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham as our school celebrated a Maths through Stories week. Using this text we used cuisinaire rods as an introduction to bar modelling. It was a fun way to connect literacy and numeracy in our learning.  In our time studies this week we learned about the different ways to measure time: seconds, minutes and hours. We then participated in a few challenges where we had to estimate how many things we could do in a minute: How many teddies could we put in a jar? How many times could we write our name? How many bricks could we build in a tower?

Health & Well-Being

We thought about the different factors that affect our energy levels: the time of day and the food we eat. At home we spoke about our resilience role models and in class we watched Boundin’ and then created a class treasure book where we shared the things that made us feel happy if we were having a bad day like the sheep in the cartoon.

Science: The Sun & The Moon

We learned about the rotation of Earth which creates night and day and about the different time zones across the world.  We were excited to see the Wolf Moon on the 17th Jan and learned that it was not dust that changed the shape of the moon but the rotation of the moon through it’s monthly phases and the way the light from the sun is reflected on it’s surface.

STEM

Our challenge this week was to create new chairs for the three bears. They had to be comfortable and at the right height for each bear. We had some ingenious ideas and most of them survived the seat testing at the end!Great team work too.

New Year and a New Term in P2

We started our week with a couple of assessments to check our growth in learning.

Literacy – This week we were learning about the sound -y at the end of a word. We were sequencing a narrative story which will be our focus in writing for the next few weeks.

Expressive Arts – Our drama task this week was to prepare for a journey to Space and we worked together to make a space rocket. Our art focus was on the artist Paul Cezanne and we used charcoal and watercolours to re-create a still life painting in his style.

Spanish – We were learning how to say ‘I like …’ in Spanish. We have been responding to the register in Spanish and try to say our tray colour at school lunch in Spanish too.

STEM – We had fun working as a team to create a bridge and a boat that the Gingerbread Man could use to keep himself safe as he crossed the river. There were some fabulous design ideas and that Gingerbread Man was even spoiled with a boat that had a hot tub onboard !

Happy New Year from P3 and P3/2

This week P3 and P3/2 have been very busy.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about time.  We have been learning about how long many minutes/hours/days/years are in a given time.  For example we know that 1 minute is 60 seconds and there are 52 weeks in one year.

In Art, we have been learning about hot and cold colours. We know red, yellow and orange are warm colours and blue, purple and green are cold colours.  We created a background of a sky using either hot or cold colours.  Next week we will add to the background

In Literacy, we have been learning about a and an.  We know we use an when words start with a vowel – a, e, i, o and u.  We have been continuing to learn about cursive script. We have been joining letters together.  F is tricky. We started to read the owl who was afraid of the dark.  We will use this book for literacy lesson and it links to our new topic about sun, moon and stars.

We have started our new topic which is sun, moon and stars.  We thought about what we know and what we would like to learn. We can’t wait to get started next week.

We have completed some assessments this week so that we can see what we remember and what our nest steps in learning will be.

In PE we were learning about fitness.  We completed lots of circuits.

All our work this week was completed in our Snapshot jotters and we look forward to sharing them with our families next week.

Quick week in P3 and P3/2

Primary 3 and Primary 3/2 have been working hard again this week.  We have been using our snapshot of learning jotters this week so that we can share our learning at home.  We can’t wait to bring our jotters home to show off our hard work.  Read all about our learning below.

In Literacy, we have using our mighty writer board to  write a story about an alien.  We have been trying to use adjectives and good openers. We have also been working on our comprehension skills after reading our class reading book.  We are working very hard on our cursive script.  We have tried to use lines in our  snapshot jotters this week so we can show our family our hard work.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about tessellation.  We know that tessellation is tiling with shapes and that there should be no gaps in the tiling. We created a tessellation using numicon, cuisenaire rods, on the laptop and on paper.

In Science, we have been learning about sound. We had to listen carefully to some sounds and guess what was making the sound.  We got some of them correct but some were tricky.

In Art, we have been learning about using line to create a pattern.  We created an image of a face with crazy hair to show all the different types of lines we could create.

In RERC we have been learning about St Andrew as it was the feast day of Saint Andrew this week.  Ask us about some facts we know about St Andrew.

In our pupil participation groups we have created a image or mascot for our group.  We had to work together to create the image.

This week we have also started to learn some new songs for a carol concert.  We are very excited as we will get to share these songs with our school community and parents.

Our Week In P3 and P3/2 – Week Commencing 22.11.21

Here is a roundup of our busy week in P3 and P3.2. We have enjoyed learning about:

Handwriting: In handwriting we have been working on our joined-up cursive letters. This week we even gave some joined-up words a go. “I was finding the joined-up words easy because I have been practising all my letters.”

Writing: In writing we have loved using the mighty writer board. We wrote a story all about a mermaid. The mighty writer mat helped us to keep track of our stories and include a beginning, middle and end. The stars on the board helped remind us to add interesting adjectives to our stories too.

Number: In number we have been rounding up our learning on addition and subtraction. We know how to add and subtract using the number bonds strategy, the empty number line, number families, partitioning, our hundred square and the doubles and near doubles strategies.

“I think the empty number line strategy works best for me because it reminds me to do the tens first”.

“I like to do the number bonds because I know them quickly and can use them for harder sums.”

RE: We began to learn about advent. We know that advent is beginning on Sunday. Advent helps us count down to Christmas. We learned about the advent wreaths. We know that it has 5 candles, 3 purple, 1 pink and a white one for Christmas day.

Our learning during Week 13 in Primary 2.

Literacy

What an exciting week we have had in literacy celebrating Scottish Book Week and taking home our Read,Write, Count bags.  On Monday afternoon we had our Book Bag Launch where we opened up a huge, heavy parcel that had been delivered to our classroom. Inside there was a book bag for everyone. We then took part in activities linked to the contents. On Wednesday we celebrated book week by making our own mini-books, bookmarks and designing book covers. We enjoyed some online stories on the ipad using ‘Bookflix’.

Numeracy

We continued with our studies in counting money. This week our focus was finding the correct coins to match a price tag, we also played games matching coins and counting amounts in purses. We were using the colour, shape and size of coins to help us to identify them. In our measure task this week we were using different tools to measure length in our playground. We used trundle wheels, metre sticks, tape measures and rulers. We even found a tape measure that was 10 metres long so had fun using that to measure the fence.

The Senses

Our experiment was to test our sense of smell. We had to identify six hidden scents. Some were good scents and some were bad scents! Most of us recognised the mint, orange and fish smells. However banana, garlic and onion were not so easy. Some pupils thought that garlic was a pair of smelly socks or a hamster !!

Health & Well-Being

We read a new story book called My Monster & Me and identified the different zones of regulation that the main character was experiencing throughout the story. The boy in the story had a worry but he felt much better after he shared the worry with his grandma. We thought about five ways we could help ourselves if we have a worry or a problem.

Catholic Education Week

This week we developed our understanding of our faith. We designed prayer cards after thinking very carefully about all the things we are thankful for. We enjoyed learning some new hymns to sing at Mass. Our Laudato Si task was thinking about the weather changes and how that will affect the birds in our area. We used cereal and pipe cleaners to create beautiful bird feeders to hang on the trees in our playground. We know that birds will appreciate us thinking about them.

Catholic Education and Scottish Book week in P3 and P3/2

We have had another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Read all about our learning below.

In Literacy, we have been making predictions.  We watched a video of a girl walking along a beach and finding bubbles then we predicted what we thought would happen next.   We thought about where she might go and who she might meet. We also read  a mystery book and we had to guess what the title and front cover would look like.

In Numeracy, we have been using our knowledge of fact families to find addition and subtraction facts.  If we know one fact we can work out the other 3 facts.  We have played different games to practise our skills.

This week is Catholic Education week and we have been learning about St Margaret whose feast day was on Tuesday.  We have also been learning about making good choices.  We made beautiful prayer cards to thank God.

In our Pupil Parliament groups we have been discussing what makes a good team, how to improve teaching and learning, how to improve the school and community and how we celebrate success and achievements. We worked hard on this task and added it to a padlet.

We have also been designing a bedroom for a book character and thinking about what they would need.  Then we designed their bed covers and wallpaper.

On Monday we took home our Read, Write Count packs and we enjoyed looking through them.

What a quick week!

Our learning in Week 12 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were using the vowel diagraphs ow and ue to build words and use in our dictation sentences. We wrote an information report on ducklings as our new genre for developing our writing skills.

Numeracy

This week we explored money. We played games to develop our awareness of the value if the different coins and put them into order. We decided that it would be fun to have a class shop so that we could count money in a real life setting. After much thought we decided that a pet shop would be perfect so it opened for business on Friday. We were introduced to measure using non-standard units. We used lollipop sticks to measure the length of classroom objects. First of all we had to estimate the length and then we used the sticks to check our predictions.

The Senses

Our experiments this week tested our sense of taste. We tried different solutions on our taste buds and had to work out if the flavour was sweet. sour, salty or bitter. We then had a vote to find out which was our favourite taste and realised that there was a mixture of favourites. We also discussed that your preferences may change over time and you may like a flavour that you didn’t like before.

Remembrance Day/COP26

We spoke about the significance of Remembrance Day and had a two minute silence at 11am on the 11th November. We made our class cross that will be placed at the War Memorial at Strathbrock.  We decorated our pebbles that we brought in from home with images of a happy planet and then placed them on the bridge outside our school. We hope that the COP26 event make good decisions for the future of our planet.

Spanish

We learned how to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish and then made a Spanish birthday card to give to our friend.

Our week in P3 & P3/2 (8.11.21)

We have had another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Here is what we have been up to:

Number: In number this week we have been learning about the empty number line. We have been using this strategy to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.

“I have liked learning about the empty number line but sometimes it can be hard to use with big numbers.”

“I like using the empty number line and it makes my adding and taking away feel easy for me”

Literacy: In literacy this week we have been learning how to write an information report.  We know that an information report needs to have lots of facts and only some opinions. We have also been adding adjectives to make our writing more interesting. We chose to research and write about tigers this week because we were learning about the tropical climate zone.

Science/Topic: We did a cactus experiment to help us learn about the desert climate zone. We made cactus shapes out of a sponge and we left them in some water. When we checked them a few days later we found that the cactus sponges had soaked up all the water and were holding on to it just like a real cactus would do in the desert.

Remembrance day: We made poppies using lots of different kinds of red paper to help us learn about remembrance day. We had a 2-minute silence to help us think about and remember all the people who died in the world wars.

Week 11 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were learning the new vowel diagraphs: ay and ea and using them to word build and write sentences. We had our final week focussing on writing descriptions and we were describing Paddington Bear.  We are very proud of our progress in writing and meeting our writing targets.

Numeracy

We were exploring number patterns using the big number square in the classroom and then made number pattern frogs to help us remember in class. We also found out about odd and even numbers.  We were developing our skills with the tessellation of 2D shapes.

Topic

We started our new science topic on the senses. We found out the names for the different parts of the eye and then we tried out the ‘Magical Milk’ experiment which tested our eyes to watch rapid changes in the liquid.

Art

We created some precious paper pups using paper collage. We decorated our pebbles for the school COP26 display. We were thinking of designs that would reflect our natural world and the sustainable goals.

P3 and P3/2 are working hard

This week in P3 and P3/2 we have been working very hard on lots of different things.  Read all about our learning below:

In Literacy, we have been continuing to learn cursive script.  We even tried to join letters together this week. We have also been continuing to learn our spelling patterns.  In PM writing we have been learning about information reports.  We know that they need a title, general statement, description and evaluation.  We tried to write about fireworks after we completed some research on the laptops.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about doubles.  We know they are a quick way to add two numbers together. WE have also looked at near doubles as we know that 6+7 is the same as double 6+1.

In HWB, we have been looking at ways to make the planet happy again.  We know we should try to look after plants and animals and save water and energy. We created posters about all the different ways we can help the planet.

In RERC, we look at St Francis of Assisi and how he cared to the animals and nature.  We know that we should care for them too.  We also looked at the story of creation this.  We know God created a beautiful world for us and we should look after it.

In Art, we created firework pictures using black card and oil pastels.

We watched the Lorax theatre show on Monday. It was very good and was all about the environment and trees.  We know that COP 26 is happening in Glasgow and we climate change is important for our future.

Week 9 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were learning the diagraphs:  oy and oa. We used two new resources to help us with our word building – Doorway speller on the ipads and the random word wheel on the Smartboard. Both were a big hit with the class. Our PM Writing theme this week was writing a description of a wind chime so we put our technology skills to the test and created a wind chime to hang on the tree outside our classroom. We then wrote a description using full sentences. Our Pupil Support Workers got a lovely surprise when they spotted it on the tree this morning.

Numeracy

We are concentrating on making patterns. This week we were sorting out patterns and naming them: polka dots, checks, zig-zags, wavy, floral, ombre, striped, two tone. There are so many to discover! We used our knowledge of them to design a pair of socks for the P2 Sock Shop.  Having spent a few weeks exploring 3D shapes we are now investigating 2D shapes. We used these shapes to make some shape monsters to put up on our display wall.

HWB

This week we were learning about the importance of a good night’s sleep. We found out that in P2 we need 10 to 12 hours sleep, so early to bed on a school night is a good idea. A good night’s sleep will give us:

  • —Energy
  • —Brain power
  • —Time to grow
  • —Time to digest our food
  • —Restore and  mend our bodies
  • —Better skin and hair
  • —A happier mood

Short but busy week in P3 and P3/2

This week in P3/2 and P3 we have been very busy.  Read all about our learning below.

In Literacy, this week we have been learning about writing a character description.  We know we need to use adjectives to describe what the person looks like and how they act. We made our own characters and then wrote our descriptions.  We also completed our free writing Friday task and lots of us tried to use describing words.  In P3 we also got introduced to Accelerated reader this week and we had a look at some of the books in this programme.  We continued with our cursive script handwriting this week and learned another few letters.  We also tried a spot the silly word passage this week were we had to pick out the words that did  not make sense and change them to a sensible word.

In Mathematics, we have been learning about symmetry.  We know that the picture or shape has to be identical on both sides of the line of symmetry.  We tried to create our own symmetrical pictures and played different games about symmetry.

In topic work this week we created a picture of 4 of the climate zones to show the different environments in these areas of the world. We learned about temperate climate zones and completed a quiz.

In RERC we learned about Joseph and his coloured dream coat.  We know that Joseph’s brothers were not very nice to him and that he was given a coat of many colours by his father. We listened to a story and had to colour in the stripes on his coat with the colours we heard in the story.

In PE, we were working with partners and using tennis balls and hoops. We played different games.

In Music, we were a song about pumpkin and making actions to the song.

Today we are enjoying our dress down day and are looking forward to P6’s assembly.

Our week in P3 and P3/2

We have had a busy last week in P3 and P3/2. Here is what we have been up to:

Budgeting : In maths we have been learning about budgeting, which means that we need to try and keep our spending to the limit. We were also learning about cheap and expensive. We know that cheap means something that costs a little money and expensive means it costs a lot.

Mixed up sentences: This week we were practising our mixed up sentences. Our teachers wrote sentences on the board that were wrong and we had to find and fix the mistakes. We were looking for spelling mistakes, missing full stops and capital letters!

Handwriting: This week we have done lots of handwriting, we have been practising our cursive k, l, m, n, o & p. We thought that n and o were the easiest and that k was a bit trickier!

Autumn walk, writing and matching artwork:  On the Autumn walk we found signs of Autumn.  We found leaves that were falling from trees and changing colour. Our walk was cold and we needed our jackets.  We used our senses to write about our walk and used cotton buds and paint to create an Autumn picture to match!

Tropical climate zone: We know that the tropical climate zone is in the rainforest. It is warm there and there is lots of rain. We know that monkeys, parrots, slow loris, sloths, elephants and tigers like this climate zone. We used oil pastels and watercolour paints to create some fabulous parrot artwork.

We are now ready for the October holidays! 😀

Signs of Autumn in Primary 2

Literacy

We were learning two new diagraphs this week, the sounds ee and oo. We used them to build words and played a matching game.  We practised the correct formation of p and k. For our final week of writing a recount we wrote a story about planting in our garden. We used our writing targets to check that we were doing a great job.

Numeracy

This week we were counting collections up to the number 50. We discovered that it was easier to make groups of ten so that we did not lose count. We took a walk around the school grounds to look for 3D shapes. We found lots of cuboids and cylinders but not many cubes.

Topic – Broxburn

Did you know that Broxburn was named in 1600 by Sir Richard Cockburn?  He used two Scottish words to make the town’s name. Brock which was the old Scot’s word for badger and burn which is the Scottish word for a stream or water.  P2 created drawings of badgers and thought about the other local wildlife we have seen near our school and houses. We discussed some of the facts we know about local landmarks such as The Bings, Union Canal, our church and our school.

Religious Education – Autumn

We spoke about the seasonal changes happening as we step into autumn. We created fantastic drawings of a Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow too.

A quick week in P3 and P3/2

P3 and P3/2 have had a busy but very quick week.  Keep reading to find out what we have been up to.

In Literacy, we have been learning about alphabetical order.  We know the order of the alphabet. In writing, we wrote our learner statement. We thought about what we have learned this term so far in school and about our personal achievements.  We have added our learner statements to our profile.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about money.  We have been counting coins to find a total and also thinking how to use the least amount of coins. We have tried lots of different activities this week.  We will be continuing with money next week.  P3 made an art shop in class.

This week had our class Mass.  We learned about the archangels – we know three of them are St Michael, St Raphael and St Gabriel.  We had a lovely Mass with Father Jeremy. Thank you Father Jeremy.

This week we were learning about the tropical climate zone in our topic work.   We completed an experiment to see what happens when the rain falls and how the clouds get heavier.

In RERC, we listened to the story of the Good Smartian.  WE know that he stopped and helped the injured man when others ignored him.  We are going to try to be like the Good Smartian and be a good friend to others.

We also tried to rewrite the school aims in our own words. P3/2 made a video and P3 made a poster with the school aims.

This week we also had our learner conversations with our teachers about what we are good at and what we need to work on.  We also picked out our latest and best piece of literacy and numeracy work for our profiles.

What a fun but busy week!

Getting into the zone in Primary 2

Literacy

During this short week in Primary 2 we have been learning to read and spell words with the ‘ph’ phoneme such as ‘phone’ ‘photo’ ‘dolphin’ and ‘elephant’. We also explored verbs in the past tense in a recount writing activity called ‘My Holiday Diary’ where we filled in the missing verb then copied it into our jotters.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week we have been learning to count to 50 through various activities: worksheets, matching word numbers to the number and using numicon to create numbers from 30 – 50.
Topic
In our ‘Broxburn Topic’ we discussed the shops and services we have in our community such as the canal, church, school and the purposes of these buildings. We enjoyed sharing our favourite places to go – Almondale park and the swimming pool!
Health and Well-being

This week we learnt about the different Zones in the Zones of regulation: Green, Red, Yellow and blue . This helps us identify which zone we are in, in relation to how we are feeling, for example we know the green zone is when we feel happy, calm and focused which means we are ready to learn. The blue zone is when we feel tiered, bored or sick. When we are in the yellow zone we may feel excited, worried or silly. The red zone is when we feel angry and out of control.

Week 4 in Primary 2

Literacy

This week our focus has been on the sounds ‘th’ and ‘ng’. We have used these sounds to make words on the magnetic boards and to write dictation words in our jotters. We are continuing to recognise more of our Fry’s words to help us to read and we are remembering to complete our reading homework task and bring our reading folders to school everyday.  Our writing theme this week was ‘Helping at Home’ and goodness me we have so many busy P2’s that there must be sparkling homes all over Broxburn.

Numeracy

We have been counting backwards and forwards in 2’s to 20 and finding the missing numbers in non-consecutive number sequences. We used all the lovely new shape resources in school to discover the properties of the shapes. We know that they have faces, edges and corners.

Our Community

Our new theme is all about our community in Broxburn. This week we were learning about the location of Broxburn and looking at maps. We also thought about the different jobs people  would have in Broxburn and the uniforms that they would wear.

RERC

We completed lots of religious learning this week. We found out about the story of Moses, we celebrated Our Lady’s birthday on the 8th September and produced some lovely pictures for the church. Father Jeremy paid us a surprise visit to collect our art work. We ended the week learning about the story of Noah’s Ark and worked as a team to create a beautiful frieze for the school corridor.

Health and Well-being

As usual we enjoyed participating in our daily mindfulness and 5 a day fitness sessions. Our focus was on safety in the home and the dangers of matches and lighters. We also spoke about our ‘Get Active’ theme and thought about things we can do at home to help us to relax and things we can do to become more active. Primary 2 had lots of fabulous ideas for both lists.

A busy week in P3 and P3/2

This week we have been very busy learning lots of different things.  Keep reading to find out more about our learning.

In Literacy, we have been writing predictions about a story of a girl who lives in a clock tower.  We had to predict who was in the tower, why they were in the tower and what would happen.  This week we have been continuing to learn to our cursive script and have been writing letters e and f.  F was very tricky.  We have been reading lots of different books this week and thinking about our favourite characters and parts of the story.

In Numeracy, we have been continuing to learn to about place value.  We have been learning how to make the biggest and smallest number.  We have tried lots of different activities.

In RERC, we have been learning about Noah’s Arc.  We know that God made promises to Noah.  We have started to create a display for the area about the promises we wish to make to God.

In our topic, we learned about the names of all the different climate zones.  We looked at where all the different climate zones are in the world.  We know that we live in a Temperate climate zone which means we get warmer summers and colder winters. We found where we live on a map.

In HWB, we thought about how to make ourselves feel better.  Some ideas included – going for a walk, playing with our favourite toys, listening to music and watching a film.

In Music, with Mrs Nicoll we have been learning a song and with beaters we have been keeping the rhythm.

In P.E, we were learning ball skills.  We have been using the basketballs. We played different games.  We have also completed the daily mile.

In Spanish, we have been learning some classroom instructions.  We also do our register in Spanish.

Another busy week for us.

Our week in Primary 2

Literacy:

This week we have been focusing on ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ sounds and bending them with our other familiar sounds, this helps us to improve our reading fluency. We wrote a letter to Mrs Kellock requesting what we would like in our new playground and we can’t wait to see what it will look like. We took turns reading aloud in our reading groups and really impressed our teachers. We have also been practising our letter formation skills.
Numeracy:
This week we continued practising counting to 20 through various activities such as matching the quantity to the number, bingo, and ordering number puzzles. We also started our new topic on 3D shape which involved sorting 3D shapes, and making 3D shapes.

Our Week in P3 and P3/2 3.9.21

We have had a very busy week of learning in P3 and P3/2 . Here are some of the things we have enjoyed:

  • In number this week we have been learning about place value. We have been learning how to make numbers and that they are made up in hundreds, tens and ones. Our favourite games were the online basket ball game and the beanbag toss.
  • We have been working really hard to practise our cursive writing during handwriting time.  We have been enjoying the challenge and found the letter d trickiest of all!
  • We have been reading Fantastic Mr Fox together as a class. We made wanted posters for Mr Fox because he had been stealing food from all the farmers.
  • In art we have been learning about the work of Kandinsky. He used a lot of colours to make abstract paintings. We had a go at making these ourselves too.

Learning is fun in Primary 2

Literacy :

This week we have been building CVC words and reviewing our common words, these skills will help us to become excellent readers. We also took home our new group reading books to read with our families.  We wrote a letter to Katie Morag telling her all about Broxburn as she has never visited the mainland. We also took a virtual trip to the Edinburgh Book Festival where Debi Gliori read us her latest book called ‘A cat called Waverley.’ Debi showed us how she created the illustrations using charcoal so we decided to give it a go too!

Numeracy:

We have been counting to twenty, ordering numbers to twenty, developing our number formation, comparing quantities using the terms ‘greater than’ and ‘smaller than’.

Health & Well-being:

We have been learning about the importance of keeping our hands clean and learned a fabulous wee song to sing as we wash our hands. Every day we have been using mindfulness sessions to help us to be calm and relaxed. We had such a fun time at ‘Build Up’ time sharing chalk and bubbles as our reward for having a great week at school.

Katie Morag:

This week we were identifying Scottish wildlife that Katie Morag  would see on the Island of Struay. We also found out some interesting facts about these creatures.  We looked at photos of the Island of Coll and compared island life to life in Broxburn. We used directions on a grid to find places on the island using forwards, backwards and left and right. We managed to find all the character’s homes. We had fun using phrases from the book such as Bobby Dazzler and Gee Wilikers! We have been learning some Scottish songs too!

Class Charter & Rights Respecting School:

We discussed the importance of knowing our rights and what that would look like in school. We created our class charter using a favourite character… Paddington Bear. We have all signed our promise agreeing to follow the class decisions on the charter.

Some highlights from the week have been the school barbeque, watching the P1 and P2/1 Assembly and watching the Scotland game on Monday.

We had a great week in P2, see what we did below :)

We were doing some handwriting and later to see if our handwriting has improved, we wrote about our weekends and practised our spelling words. We wrote about our dream holiday and the one we liked best from the past as well as learning how to write info reports – it was really interesting! We also learned an important part of writing – similes and metaphors. We now know their meanings and how to use them (e.g. She is a star (metaphor) He is as tall as a tree (simile)).

We revised our division and taking away, tall things and smaller things. Shorter things and longer things etc.

In RE we were learning about Mary and the Holy Spirit as well as having a class discussion on the importance of prayers.

We were outside a lot since the weather was beautiful! Sports day was amazing too, we danced in class. We also did some posters about moving to P3 and we discovered that it is a great way of finding out how we feel about things.

Have a lovely weekend – one more week to go!

Kind regards,

Mrs Koziel

Great week in P2!

In maths, we have been reviewing some of the knowledge gained in P2 e.g. adding using a 100 square, multiplying, dividing, subtracting, positive and negative numbers on the number line and much more…

In literacy, we have been drawing and writing cards for Father’s day, and we know now a new sound ‘e-e’, for example : these, here, eve, Steve, complete, even. Like every week, we were practising our handwriting too! This time we were focusing on the letters Ee and Ff.

In Spanish, we were learning how to say and write the days of the week and months of the year, it was a little tricky but we did great.

During our HWB lesson and our topic ‘Healthy body- healthy mind,’ we were learning about how important it is to regularly exercise. We also had a dance competition – it was good fun!

In PE we had a wonderful time playing dodge ball, also we did our ‘mile a day’ almost every day as the weather was beautiful!

In science we were learning about some small creatures, we know that insects have 6 legs, female mosquitoes bite people as well as other animals, and we know that our world could not exist without bees!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Koziel

Lots of work in P2!

In maths, we were revising our knowledge about kilograms and grams and taking away whilst using a 100 square to help us. We were also doing number talks where we used 10 frames to help us and we practised the partitioning strategy.

In literacy, we did our spelling test! We were all a little bit nervous but we think that it went well 🙂         We also wrote our weekend news and we presented our stories with Scottish words.

We continued our mini-beast hunt! It was really fun! We also know that a food chain consists of producers, prey, predators and consumers.

In RE we were learning about Corpus Christi as you know, this Sunday is the feast of Corpus Christi.

Lastly, we took part in some races for sports day – we love to exercise!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Koziel

Fun and learning in P3/2

Another busy week in P3/2. Keep reading to find out what we have been doing.
In literacy, we have been learning more about information reports. We know we need to use present tense when we are writing an information report. We have continued to learn more about cursive script and have been trying to write some capital letters this week. We have been learning how to use contractions.  We know you use a apostrophe to replace the missing letters. For example do not =don’t, could not = couldn’t.
In numeracy, we have been using the empty number line strategy. We have tried lots of different subtraction sums. We have been putting a 100 square together and using our knowledge of number to work out where all the parts go.
In RERC, we talked about the Eucharist and how we need to be thankful. We tried to write a thanksgiving prayer to God. We thanked him for our family, friends, nature and His love.
We have used the laptops this week to help us learn to type and find the keys on the keyboard.
We had the first part of our sports day this week.  We had to races against our year group in lots of different races. It was a fun and lovely morning. We cannot wait for part two!
We were learning about fossil fuels in our energy topic. We know that coal and oil are found underground. We use energy everyday.
In Expressive Arts, we looked at the artist Piet Mondrian. He painted pictures with lots of different squares and rectangles. He could make lots of different pictures out of the shapes. He used primary colours in his art work.  These are red, yellow and blue.  We created our own picture using a ruler and the primary colours.
In HWB, we were thinking about how we can make the world a better place to live in.  We thought about the sustainability goals and how we can help the world.
This week have been presenting to our class about our hobbies.  We have learned all about painting, football, cricket, gymnastics, roller skating, swimming and cars.  The talks were fantastic!

Yet another busy week in P2!

In maths, we were revising our knowledge about acute, obtuse and right angles. We also learned about greater than >, less than < and equal to =, signs and we used these to help us compare the sizes of different angles. As well as that, we were learning about kilograms and grams. We were using a scale to check how heavy various objects are. We were counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and to help us with number talks, we used ten frames.

In literacy, we were writing our senses poem about spring and because we were learning about onomatopoeia (words that describe different sounds e.g. woof, bang, ping etc.), we included that in our poem too. Of course, we practised our handwriting too and practised the second hundred’s fry’s words. Some of our pupils presented the stories they wrote at home, those stories were special as they had to contain Scottish words.

In R.E., we were learning about the miracles performed by Jesus and we watched bible stories about that.

There are many living things around us, and not all of them are humans. For science, we went on a minibeast hunt! It was so fun! We used a magnifying glass to get a closer look at the little creatures and marked them off on our worksheets. We’ll continue the work next week. 🙂

For health and wellbeing, we were talking about good friendships, what they are made up of and what skills we need to possess to be a good friend.

We all know how important it is to have lots of exercises. For P.E. Mr Muldoon took us outside and we were throwing bean bags!

Kind Regards,

Mrs Koziel

Busy week in P2 :-)

This week in literacy, we wrote our weekend news, learned about different rhymes and practised our spelling with the well–known strategy, ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. Also, we did our personal statements (What I am best at, what I am proud of and what I have improved on.)

This week, we were taught about angles. We know now that an acute angle is under 90 degrees, a right angle is exactly 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is over 90 degrees, but below 180. Additionally, we practised some division and we were making 26 with the most efficient strategy possible.

Our continuous topic is Health and Wellbeing, Resilience. We know that a resilient person is one, who never gives up, always tries best, knows that after a ‘down’ in life, there is always an ‘up’. We were VERY resilient too – when we were doing the ‘mile a day ’. Although it was quite hot and doing 6 whole laps around the field is quite tiresome, we managed it in the end 🙂

As you may know, Pope Francis has asked everyone to pray to the Virgin Mary to end the coronavirus pandemic, therefore, we were praying to Mary, too.

It’s fun learning another language! This week we were still revising our knowledge of how to say numbers, colours and simple greetings in Spanish.

Lastly, we painted our very own pictures of the Eiffel Tower painting by George Seurat using paint and cotton swabs. Our paintings were very good, not as good as his!

Have a lovely weekend – and remember; we have Monday off! 🙂

Kind Regards,

Anna Koziel

Lots of work in P3/2

In Literacy,  we have been learning about the features of an information report. We know that an information report needs a title, general statement, a description and an evaluative statement at the end.  In Grammar, we have been learning about irregular past tense verbs. We know that you cannot just add ‘ed’ to the end of these verbs. An example would be swim and swam.  We are continuing to learn how to form our cursive script.
In Maths, we finished our money topic this week, rounding off by learning to use an empty number line to calculate change. We also created some money posters to show what we have learned about coins and change. We have started to learn about rounding to the nearest 10. We know that if the number has a 1,2,3,4 in the ones column we round down to the ten before the number and if there is a 5,6,7,8,9 in the ones column we round up to the next tens number. We enjoyed playing lots of rounding games such as bingo.

In Health and Wellbeing, we have continued to learn about regulation strategies which is the yellow cog. We thought about our worries (triggers – the blue cog) this week and chose a regulation strategy that we could use when we feel these worries.  We know that we can have big and small worries and we can think of different strategies to help us with these worries.

In RERC, we have learned about Pentecost. We know this is when the Holy Spirit came to the Disciples and blessed them with the gift of speaking all languages to share the good news of Jesus. We know that the disciples then spread the good news around the world.

In PE, we were playing team games to try to earn points.

In Social Studies, we have continued our learning on climate zones, focusing on the Mediterranean climate. We know about the countries, weather, food and languages that are spoken in this climate. We made tourism posters to advertise holidays in this climate. We also look at animals that live in the temperate zone and we tried to draw a picture of a hawk.

In Science, we have started a new topic about Energy. This week we have created a mindmap to show our understanding of the different types of energy we have in our world. We know energy makes things happen.

Busy week in P2….

This week we were learning about division – we used concrete materials, games and Number Talk strategies to help us consolidate knowledge better – we also revised our previous maths knowledge.

In literacy, we wrote special friendship recipes (e.g. add a pinch of compliments, a big dollop of smiles, one cup of understanding and 2 tablespoons of care and support. Mix them all together in your heart) and on Monday we wrote our weekend news. We loved learning some Scottish words! Here are some that we learned; auld – old, bonnie – beautiful, braw – good and wheesht – quiet – that’s Mrs Koziel’s favourite word because she uses it a lot.

To prepare for the challenges of P3, we have been working extra – hard on our handwriting.

Since yesterday was Ascension Day, we have learned all about it. Pope Francis has asked for all of us to pray for the end of the pandemic, so we were praying to our Lady using the prayer ‘Hail Mary’.

To help us improve our Spanish, we have learned to say ‘a Home–packed lunch, please’ it’s: ‘La tartera, por favor’, when we order our lunches at school. Of course, we still practise the days of the week and colours in Spanish, also.

Our Sunflower is growing beautifully too! Their growth was recorded in our ‘Sunflower diary’.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Mrs Koziel

Another busy week in P3/2

Primary 3/2 have been working very hard tis week.  Keep reading to find out what we have been learning.

In literacy, this week we have been creating targets for this term.  This gives us a goal to work towards and we thought about how we can achieve this goal.  We also completed a narrative story about a lost polar bear.  We know all the different features of a narrative text.  We continued to work on spelling this week.  We also learned about past tense and know how to make a verb into a past tense verb.

In maths, we have been learning about measure. We have been measuring the length of things. We know that you measure length in millimetres, centimetre, metres and kilometres.  We know that there are 10 mm in 1cm and 100cm in 1m.

We have been learning about your skeleton and the names of our bones.  Our skeleton is important because it protects the organs in our body.  Without a skeleton we won’t be able to stand up, talk, walk etc.

We have been using pattern to decorate a vase this week then we used paints to create the flowers.  They look beautiful in the area.

This week we were learning to football rounders.  We were learning to work as a team and listen carefully to instructions.

We looked a climate zone and thought about facts we know about the area.  We researched the area and found out the weather of the area and animals that live there.

This week we set targets for numeracy and mathematics too.  We thought about an area we felt we needed to improve on  and how we could achieve our target.

First week back in P3/2

P3/2 have had a busy first week back at school after the Easter holidays. We have been busy learning lots of new things.

In numeracy, we have been learning all about Area. We know that area is the space a shape covers. We have used counters and cubes to measure the area.  We have also counted squares to measure the area.

In Writing, we have been looking at writing a Narrative story. We know the structure of a narrative and we have used this to help us write a plan for our story. We had a go at writing a story about a lost pet. We have been learning all about fact and opinion and we know the difference between them. A fact is something that is true and can evidence to back it up.  An opinion is something you think and can change from one person to another.  We also continued to learn more about cursive script.

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about self-regulation and coming up with our own calm down strategies when our emotions don’t feel so good.

In RERC, we have been learning about Jesus’ Resurrection. We listened to the story from the Bible and discussed it.

We started our new topic ‘Climate Zones’ and completed a KWL grid about what we already know, what we want to learn and how we would like to learn about climate zones.

We have learned an artist called Romero Britto. He used bright colours and patterns in his work. We enjoyed recreating his style in a lovely Spring picture of tulips.

We also looked at internet safety and why being safe on line is a right that we have and why it is important. We know it links to our right to privacy and safety.

In STEM, we created a new transport vehicle to move people or things around.  We thought about the problem, identified solutions and materials and then designed our model.

What a week in Primary 2….

In Maths we were learning about non-standard unit measurements. We checked how many feet our classroom is. We also checked objects in the playground using natural materials e.g. sticks or stones.

We learnt about a new artist called Jackson Pollock, we tried to express ourselves using his method of painting. It was such good fun!

In literacy, we were writing about our holidays and, we’re proud to say, remembered all the SC. We were learning about speech bubbles and speech marks then we made our own comics using all the knowledge we gained. We were learning about a new sound i-e, we know now how to read words bike, like, white etc. It was not very tricky.

Outdoor learning and doing a mile a day were great – especially in this lovely weather we have been having, recently.

In digital learning we were learning how to use the Paint app – we loved it!

Also, Yesterday was national EARTH day so to celebrate this, we wrote acrostic poems about our planet, it was so interesting, later we learned how we can save our planet by learning about Global Goal no. 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, so we made some posters about this and agreed on some next steps. We decided to bring our water bottles as much as we can but if we forget, we are going to use just one plastic cup per day. The cups will have our names written on them so we will know who has which cup. We also decided to not moan when we have to wear clothes after siblings and that it is a good idea to give the clothes that are too small for us to charity. It will help our Earth definitely.

Lastly, as part of R.E., we carried on our discussion about Easter and what happened then.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!!!

Busy time in P2….

We then planned out our writing and later wrote our stories about ‘The Little Duck’.

For our Sustainable Development Goals, we had an amazing idea to create a robot that gathers used plastic and makes them into toys!

Also, recently everyone saw our assembly about St Patrick, and we’re proud to say that it was a huge success!

For digital learning, we learned how to use Chatterbox by making funny talking pictures! 🙂

We are finishing our topic about schools in the past – and after what we learned, we can say that we prefer to present schools much more!

P3/2 First Week Back

Primary 3/2 have had a great start to the new school year this week.

We have been completing lots of health and well being tasks focusing on forming friendships and getting to know one another.  We have shared what we were doing during lockdown and the summer holidays.  During our home learning day we had a think about some targets we could set ourselves this term with the help of our parents and had a counting challenge to test our number knowledge! We also thought about what topics we would like to learn about this year.

We are looking forward to another fun week next week!

Short but very busy week for P2…

We have completed our first week in our school and already working hard to get our classroom set up for the year ahead. We had a lesson about hygiene practice, how to wash our hands properly and how to avoid Coronavirus as best as we can. We know that we need to wash our hands before entering the classroom, after changing shoes, before and after every meal, before and after playtime and of course after using the toilet. It means that we need to wash our hands as many times as we can.

On the first day, we had lovely time learning outside. The weather  was beautiful that day. We were learning some maths and practicing letter formation using chalks whilst having fun.

We had a chance to watch ‘The Story of Moses’ in the Bible for Beginners and we tried to draw a picture to reflect on what we have noticed in the story.

Today we had a wonderful time practising our number bonds up to 10 and we recapped some of the sounds. Later we had some free-choice time where we played outside.

We are excitedly looking forward to the next week of learning. There will be lots of hard work ahead but also lots of fun, we can’t wait!

Fitness Fortnight Week 2

P2’s Fitness Fortnight busy week…

  Fitness fortnight in P2

As you may know, fitness fortnight has started and now we have already gone through half of it! Have a look below and see how P2 got on…

When you think of sport you usually think of physical exercise and nothing more but, with the help of some pens and markers, we included literacy in our week by making incredible sports day banners! As well as that, we made an acrostic poem to the word HEALTHY and created mind-blowing posters about the importance of healthy eating.

Along with literacy comes maths and yes, you guessed it- we did an outstanding job with that too by doing activities like,  throwing bean bag (and other safe, soft objects) and estimating how far we threw them. Next -with a hand from an adult – we measured them exactly and checked how close we were with our estimation! Also, we set a timer and saw how long it takes us to do 20 squats then rounding the seconds from the timer to the nearest whole number (if we could). We made a circuit and timed how long it took us to get through it along with all the members of our family, later trying to beat our time!

What’s fitness fortnight without some plain old sport? With the help of YouTube, we have done a workout with ‘Jumpstart Jonny’ or ‘Joe Wick’s’ and ‘Just Dance’ too! Later we had a lesson to learn some martial arts! As well as spelling out our name by doing different types of exercises and taking a time to step back by taking part in the ‘Cosmic Zen Den’ video.

On top of all this, we did an exciting taste quiz to explore different foods and made activities or games to share with all the other boys and girls.

Phew! What a busy week!

P2 Home Learning

P2 have had another busy week. Here are some of the things we have been learning:

  • In literacy we have been learning to write setting descriptions. We had  to describe the picture given to us by using lots of adjectives.
  • We had to read a passage and spot the silly words. Then we had to think of more sensible words to replace them.
  • In maths we were learning about multiplication. We have been looking at repeated addition and arrays to help us work out multiplication questions.
  • We also looked at sharing things equally between different sized groups using concrete materials.
  • In Health and Wellbeing we looked at not giving up. We had to think of something we found hard then draw a picture and write down advice for yourself or to help someone else achieve this.
  • As part of our Living Things topic we created posters about our favourite animals and presented them to our families. We had to make sure we spoke clearly and loudly and looked at our audience.
  • In RE we watched a video about God speaking to Moses. We then wrote about what happened and drew a picture.
  • In Drama we watched a video and acted out the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
  • We we learned different body parts in Spanish to help us play along to the Harry Potter theme tune.

P2 Learning Grid 10

P2 Home Learning- Week 10 (3)

Another busy week in P2…

Primary 2 had a very busy week. Have a look at what we have done at home…

  • We were learning about the meaning of ‘non-fiction’, we wrote interesting facts in our jotters.
  • Rainbow writing is a fun strategy that we used to make us more confident in our spelling. We used the website ‘Doorway speller’ to practice our common words.
  • Learning to describe things in writing as well as speaking is very important. That is why we practised using adjectives to describe our favourite book characters.
  • Imagine you were asked to split a pizza in half for your other friend. You would have to know how to split things in half. Luckily we know how to do this because we were practising splitting things in half all week.
  • As well as that, we made sure that we will not forget all the things that we have learnt throughout the week by playing the ‘Sumdog’ challenge and filling out a worksheet about halves and quarters that our teachers have set for us.
  • ‘Lunes, Martes, Miercoles…’ these are some days of the week in Spanish. P2 already know what they mean since we practised this by listening to a video on YouTube.
  • An international language is a language that lots of people around the world can understand at least a bit. Through expressive arts, we can talk about our feelings in a way that is easy to understand. This is why we watched a video about ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ and joined in along with our families.
  • Staying fit is key to leading a healthy life. To help us, we did a Go Noodle activity which was found on YouTube.
  • We all have most likely seen an ant before, but – how much do we know about them? Lots now! This is because we have learned about Minibeasts for science and then watched a video to learn some facts about ants! Later, we also learned about what plants need to survive.
  • For RERC, we looked at Psalm 65: 9-13 and contemplated it, praying with our family. Also, we watched a video on YouTube about how God spoke to Moses and later talked about it with our family. Next, we drew a picture of what happened. Some of us even wrote a few sentences to go along with it!

Primary 2’s Busy Week!

Primary 2 have had another busy week completing lots of tasks from their home learning grids. Here are some of the activities we have been doing:

  • We used Oxford Owl website to choose a book and predict what we thought would happen in the story. We used the front cover and blurb to help us.
  • For Spelling we got to choose the way we would like to practise our sound for the week and we completed a Sumdog Challenge.
  • We created a character description about an Orge using lots of different adjectives.
  • In Maths, we were learning about rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. We completed a Sumdog Challenge to help us practise rounding along with other fun activities.
  • We were revising our numbers in Spanish from 1 to 20 using songs on YouTube.
  • Having a growth mindset is very important. We watched videos about the importance of having a growth mindset and then discussed what we learned with an adult.
  • We completed a ‘What is your name?’ workout. We had to do a different exercise for each letter of our name.
  • As part of our Living Things Topic, we learned about food chains and drew an example of a food chain in our jotters.
  • We also learned about the different parts of a plant. These are petals, stem, leaf and roots.
  • We watched a Dance first and then tried to copy the moves. Later we  tried to add our own choreography.

P2 Weekly Update.

We are finishing our seventh week of home learning. We did a fantastic job as usual. Have a look at what we have done.

To broaden our knowledge of literacy we used Oxford Owl and read a book of our choice aloud with the excellent expression. Then we answered blooms questions.

We were practising our spelling words in pyramid writing. Then we logged into Sumdog and completed the spelling challenge set.

Also, we created poems about Spring, using our senses.

In addition, we were practising our handwriting by writing our addresses.

Knowing how to add numbers is a very important life skill. So for maths, we revised addition by playing games, filling worksheets and completing the Sumdog challenges the teachers had set for us.

Que clima hace hoy? What is the weather today? In Spanish, we were learning about weather vocabulary. It is good to know other languages.

We did research online about living creatures that live in our local Union Canal.

Capturing spring on a piece of paper may not be easy for everyone but for our young artistic minds it was ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy’.

May is the month of Mary so we discussed with members of our families why we honour Mary so much. As well as that we watched videos from the Bible Beginners channel on YouTube.

‘Who we are and what we are good at is not fixed.’ All of us are unique and we all have different talents but that does not mean that we cannot get better at things. We looked back at all the skills we have learnt since the time we were born.

Here is what some of our pupils said:

‘I did my missing numbers within 50 without a chart!!’

‘Still loving my sum’s more than writing but love learning different subjects’

‘Working hard in my writing, I think you will be impressed with the amount I have written and how many WOW words I’ve used during home school’

P2 Home Learning Grid (W/C 18.05.20)

P2 Home Learning- Week 7

P2 Home Learning Week 6

This week we had lots of exciting activities to do…

In maths, we were learning about Data Handling. We have completed different types of graphs/charts, extracted key information from graphs to answer questions and took part in a Data Handling Sumdog challenge.

In literacy, we have been learning the difference between Fact and Opinion. We know that a fact is known to be true and an opinion is what someone believes.

We were learning to write character descriptions. We completed a character description about a witch using lots of different    adjectives.

To develop our Spanish we used a video from YouTube to teach us how to say different greetings. Later we revised them with an adult.

We started a new topic this week called Living Things. We learned the difference between Living and Non-Living things. Living things are alive e.g. plants, people, animals and non-living things are objects/ items for example, door, table, TV, tablets.

We also learned about what Living things need to be able to survive. We know that living things need: Food, Water, Air, Shelter and Sunlight.

This month is the month of Mary. We have been practising saying the Hail Mary and are going to say it every day for the month of May. We also watched a video to learn more about Mary.

As part of our resilience topic, we were looking at respecting ourselves. With our families we discussed our strengths and qualities, if there were similarities and differences between us and why everyone can’t be good at everything. We then shared something that we would like to improve on.

This week we worked on our fitness by doing a ‘What’s your name?’ workout. We had to do a different exercise for every letter of our name.

Primary 2 have been working very hard at home. Have a look at our blog to see what we have been learning in this short week…

In literacy, we have revised our common words to help us consistently spell them correctly.

We used the  Oxford Owl website to explore a variety of books and write a summary about what happened in the book we read.

We have also written about our feelings in our jotters. We wrote about how we feel spending so much time at home.

In maths, we have been learning about estimation. We have had some worksheets where we had to guess what number should fill the blank space on the number line. We also played some math games using the new skill of estimating.

One of the subjects in school is to learn another language. Since we are learning at home, we asked our parents for permission to have an account on Duolingo to help us uphold the knowledge of Spanish and take it to the next level.

Creativity is in everyone. It is also in all the children of P2! To use our talents and imagination, we gathered different materials and created a unique picture of what WE think spring looks like.

As May begins, we are going to try to have a better relationship with Mary the Mother of God and God himself- Our Father, by praying to them every day in our own words.

Making the right choices in our day – to – day eating can sometimes be difficult. Luckily, we know exactly what to do because we have been cutting out food and putting it on a paper plate to make a healthy meal for ourselves. This will help us to know exactly how to eat healthy in the future.

Thank you for the lovely pictures we have received so far. Remember to keep sending us pictures of your amazing work.

Take care everyone and have a nice and safe weekend

Mrs Alexander and Mrs Koziel

P2 Home Learning

Here is what we have been up to this week…

In literacy, we have been revising sounds that we have learned so far using pyramid writing.

We were upskilling our sentences by trying to add WOW words to them and writing a letter to our teacher about what we have been doing during lockdown.

We also completed a book review on one of our favourite books from home.

In Maths, we have been practising subtraction using different materials we found at home e.g. pasta, pencils, blocks. We also completed a subtraction worksheet and played games online.

To develop our Spanish we used videos from YouTube to remind us how to say the colours, numbers and months of the year.

For science, we continued to learn about Forces. We have been exploring different objects that we can push and pull at home and at school.

In Art, we were learning to use textures by finding different materials at home e.g. wool, string, pasta, buttons, feathers etc. to create a picture.

We continued to develop our fitness by completing a Body Coach workout on YouTube.

We reflected with our families about why we should be thankful to God and wrote down 3 things we were thankful for. We also said our own prayers of thanks to God.

Home learning in P2…

This week we had lots of exciting activities to do… Here are some of them…

In maths, we were learning about symmetry, we had a chance to explore symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes in our houses.

In literacy, we were revising our knowledge about question marks.

We have been reading books and then checked our understanding by completing comprehension worksheets.

We also practiced our handwriting in our jotters, writing our names and surnames.

This week we challenged ourselves by using different openers for our sentences to make our writing more interesting.

To develop our Spanish we used a video from YouTube to remind us how to say the days of the week in Spanish. Later we revised them with an adult.

For science, we were learning about Forces. We were exploring everything that you can push and pull.

Also to help relax and reduce stress, we watched a mindfulness video on YouTube and completed a mindfulness colouring sheet.

Helping our parents is just as important as learning. That is why we helped to prepare a meal with our parents by washing, peeling and cutting the food.

Thank you to all who sent photographs of their fantastic work. We are so proud of you all. Well done!!!

Today we are going to be Scientist……

Good morning everyone…

Hope you are all well and safe.  We thought you could try out this little activity and bring the Scientist out in you. This is a great way for the children to use their imagination, problem solving skills, investigative skills while feeding their curiosity.  It would be a good way to show our support for our amazing front liners. If you could, it would be wonderful if you could send  us a little picture of you carrying out this experiment. Good luck!!  The Nursery Team xx

Make your own rainbow
Learn how to make a rainbow with this fun science experiment.
What you’ll need:

• A tall glass of water (about three quarters full)
• White paper
• A sunny day
Instructions:
1. Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good).
2. Hold the glass of water in front of the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water and bends (refracts) and forms a rainbow of colours on your sheet of paper.
3. Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles tosee  if it has a different effect.

You will only be able to see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the sunlight refracts through the water droplets in the sky in front of you. Have a look here for a bit more help if you need it!
