Another busy week in P1- please read what we have learnt recently.

Literacy

Just like every Monday, we wrote our weekend news, beginning it with: At the weekend I… We tried to remember what we were doing over the weekend and we remembered about all the success criteria: capital letters when needed, finger spaces, full stops and of course a connective ‘and’ – easy peasy :-). We also recapped our knowledge about the sound ‘igh’ by writing some words with it: e.g. right, light, night etc. We have made more posters persuading about the dangerous litter in the sea and practised writing sentences that our teachers dictated to us.

Numeracy

We were counting forwards and backwards from a given number. We were practising to work out the number before/after/between and we were counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s and recalled double facts up to 20. We were learning about big, small, bigger, smaller, biggest, smallest. It was good fun! We learnt how to use non-standard units to measure objects.

Topic – Under the Sea

More sea creatures- a ‘Star Fish’ this week. We know many facts about starfish and how to draw this beautiful animal.

RERC

We learnt about the Last Supper – which was the day before Jesus Christ died on the cross. We know now that the Last Supper was a feast that Jesus had with his disciples and one of them (called Judas Iscariot) betrayed Jesus. Yesterday, we learnt about St Patrick who is a very famous and great saint as well as the patron saint of Ireland.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Primary 1’s Week of Learning-10.02.22

We have had a super week!

In Literacy, we have been revising our sounds and balloon words and using them to write short sentences. Our teachers are very impressed that we can do this, as well as remembering to use finger spaces and full stops. Wow! We have been reading our new books at home and in school, and we are noticing our sight words in the stories. We were learning about capital letters, so we know now when to use them correctly. We also wrote an imaginative story about: ‘A visit to the vet’. We were happy to write a few sentences, using our success criteria and tried to use the connective ‘and’ – it was not very tricky for us at all!

In Numeracy, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards to 30 in 2s and up to 100 in 5s and 10s. We were practising number bonds for 10 and 20. We also continued to practise addition and subtraction using Rekenreks and Numicon, 10 frames, number tracks and, also number lines. Some of us can now do this independently. We are successful and confident learners! We started to learn about data using pictograms, which we found a ‘piece of cake’ (get it?).

We have also enjoyed some STEM as we became inventors! We were learning about Scottish inventors e.g. Alexander Graham Bell ( who invented the telephone), Charles Macintosh( who invented the raincoat) or John Logie Baird ( who invented the television). We designed our own rockets, flying cars, shelters, phones and teddies. We had lots of fun doing this all out of recycled materials!

HWB- In PE we were practising our gymnastic skills! We found it very fun and sometimes tricky! This week is called Children’s Mental Health Week, so today we had a chance to ‘dress to express’ – and we loved it! This could happen every Friday! We were learning how to be a good friend and what we need to do to improve our ‘ good friendship skills’. We now know what to do.

In RE we were learning about Jesus and his 12 disciples, we know that most of them were very good friends to Jesus!

Have a good long weekend everyone!

We had a great week!

We had a great week! Our new topic is fantastic! ‘Scotland’. Read on to find out what else we have been up to.

Literacy

As well as revising lots of sounds previously taught, we learnt two new sounds this week: ‘oy’ e.g.(boy, toy, enjoy) and ‘ow’ e.g.(bow, row, show). Both of these sounds appear in lots of words, (as we found out)! Now that we have a bank of sounds in our heads, we are writing more and more each day and using our knowledge of these sounds to help us to sound out words when we are reading too. We are becoming more confident at writing independently and giving writing a go. Our teachers are VERY proud of us all ( like always)!

Numeracy

We have been practising how to tell the time using o’clock and half past, which we are becoming really good at. We also learn about digital clocks, we know that half-past finishes with -:30) and o clock finishes with-:00).  We have also been practising subtraction using the number line and the Rekenrek.

Health and Wellbeing

We continue to learn how to skip in P.E. and again, it was easier for some of us than others. Skipping is really good as it helps with balance, jumping and coordination and it is fun!

Topic

Scotland- Woohoo!!! ‘Rabbie’ Burn’s day was on the 25th of January of course; so on this day, we had a great time tasting Scottish foods (Shortbread, oatcakes, Irn-Bru). We learned some dance steps, sang songs, and designed our own tartan kilts and Scottish flags.

RE

We were learning that God invites us to show love to others. We know that God loves everybody and He wants us to love others. We know that we can show love by being kind and showing respect to our families and friends. It is good also to share our toys, help out at home, take care of other people’s property and have good manners.

Thank you for reading our blog, have a nice weekend.

In Art, we have been learning about hot and cold colours. We know red, yellow and orange are warm colours and blue, purple and green are cold colours.  We created a background of a sky using either hot or cold colours.  Next week we will add to the background

In Literacy, we have been learning about a and an.  We know we use an when words start with a vowel – a, e, i, o and u.  We have been continuing to learn about cursive script. We have been joining letters together.  F is tricky. We started to read the owl who was afraid of the dark.  We will use this book for literacy lesson and it links to our new topic about sun, moon and stars.

We have started our new topic which is sun, moon and stars.  We thought about what we know and what we would like to learn. We can’t wait to get started next week.

We have completed some assessments this week so that we can see what we remember and what our nest steps in learning will be.

In PE we were learning about fitness.  We completed lots of circuits.

In Music, we were learning about Scottish music.  We will be singing the songs soon.  We also looked at percussion instruments.

Thank you for reading our blog.  We have enjoyed being back at school.

Quick week in P3 and P3/2

We have also been working on our comprehension skills after reading our class reading book.  We are working very hard on our cursive script.  We have tried to use lines in our  snapshot jotters this week so we can show our family our hard work.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about tessellation.  We know that tessellation is tiling with shapes and that there should be no gaps in the tiling. We created a tessellation using numicon, cuisenaire rods, on the laptop and on paper.

In Science, we have been learning about sound. We had to listen carefully to some sounds and guess what was making the sound.  We got some of them correct but some were tricky.

In Art, we have been learning about using line to create a pattern.  We created an image of a face with crazy hair to show all the different types of lines we could create.

In RERC we have been learning about St Andrew as it was the feast day of Saint Andrew this week.  Ask us about some facts we know about St Andrew.

In our pupil participation groups we have created a image or mascot for our group.  We had to work together to create the image.

This week we have also started to learn some new songs for a carol concert.  We are very excited as we will get to share these songs with our school community and parents.

Learning in Primary 1 (week beginning 15th November 2021)

Literacy

This week we learned about the letter ‘W’ as well as practised the sounds that, we have learned beforehand through colouring, craft activities, and reading. We wrote our own books about Floppy and Kipper. In addition, as it is World Nursery Rhyme week, we learned about rhyming words and even made our own rhymes! Our teachers were so impressed!

We focused on using different concrete materials (Rekenrek, Numicons, Flashcards, 100 square, etc.) and explored different ways of making the number 10. Additionally, we were using the number line in our learning how to add two numbers together. We kept practising counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Learning across the Curriculum

As it is Catholic Education Week, we were learning about our Parish in Broxburn and all of us now know that Father Jeremy is our Parish Priest. We were surprised to find out that the church is called St John Cantius and St Nicholas – that is how our school is named! In addition, our teachers showed us pictures of our church and we coloured in a stained glass window templates. We also learned about St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland, as her feast was on the 16th of November. We found out that she was a very good person.

Have a lovely weekend,

P1 Teachers

Learning in Primary 1 (Week Beginning 8th November)

Literacy

This week, as well as recapping our previous sounds, we also learned some new ones. Our new sounds this week were: ‘ee’, ‘l’ and ‘r’ – and we had lots of fun learning these sounds through colouring, writing on whiteboards and arts and crafts! We also did big writing this week on Thursday – our teachers were very impressed with our sentence and describing skills. Also, we read our reading books everyday – we love reading!

Numeracy

We know that numbers are everywhere in the world – that is why we understand how important it is to know and recognise them. This week we learned (and revised!) about number sequences up to 20 as well as recognising all the numbers from 0 to 20. Our teachers were very proud of our progress – and we were very proud too:) Furthermore, we practised our addition skills using Rekenreks and recognising the number of objects.

Learning Across the Curriculum

On Thursday 11th of November, it was Remembrance Day. To honour everyone who died at war, we held a 2 – minute silence. We are very thankful to all those soldiers that had lost their lives to fight for us, so we made our own Poppies and Crosses.

Also, as Christmas is getting closer and closer, we have started preparing for our Nativity! We love such fun practising all the songs.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

We were doing some handwriting and later to see if our handwriting has improved, we wrote about our weekends and practised our spelling words. We wrote about our dream holiday and the one we liked best from the past as well as learning how to write info reports – it was really interesting! We also learned an important part of writing – similes and metaphors. We now know their meanings and how to use them (e.g. She is a star (metaphor) He is as tall as a tree (simile)).

We revised our division and taking away, tall things and smaller things. Shorter things and longer things etc.

In RE we were learning about Mary and the Holy Spirit as well as having a class discussion on the importance of prayers.

We were outside a lot since the weather was beautiful! Sports day was amazing too, we danced in class. We also did some posters about moving to P3 and we discovered that it is a great way of finding out how we feel about things.

Fun and learning in P3/2

Another busy week in P3/2. Keep reading to find out what we have been doing.
In literacy, we have been learning more about information reports. We know we need to use present tense when we are writing an information report. We have continued to learn more about cursive script and have been trying to write some capital letters this week. We have been learning how to use contractions.  We know you use a apostrophe to replace the missing letters. For example do not =don’t, could not = couldn’t.
In numeracy, we have been using the empty number line strategy. We have tried lots of different subtraction sums. We have been putting a 100 square together and using our knowledge of number to work out where all the parts go.
In RERC, we talked about the Eucharist and how we need to be thankful. We tried to write a thanksgiving prayer to God. We thanked him for our family, friends, nature and His love.
We have used the laptops this week to help us learn to type and find the keys on the keyboard.
We had the first part of our sports day this week.  We had to races against our year group in lots of different races. It was a fun and lovely morning. We cannot wait for part two!
We were learning about fossil fuels in our energy topic. We know that coal and oil are found underground. We use energy everyday.
In Expressive Arts, we looked at the artist Piet Mondrian. He painted pictures with lots of different squares and rectangles. He could make lots of different pictures out of the shapes. He used primary colours in his art work.  These are red, yellow and blue.  We created our own picture using a ruler and the primary colours.
In HWB, we were thinking about how we can make the world a better place to live in.  We thought about the sustainability goals and how we can help the world.
This week have been presenting to our class about our hobbies.  We have learned all about painting, football, cricket, gymnastics, roller skating, swimming and cars.  The talks were fantastic!

Busy week in P2 :-)

This week in literacy, we wrote our weekend news, learned about different rhymes and practised our spelling with the well–known strategy, ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. Also, we did our personal statements (What I am best at, what I am proud of and what I have improved on.)

This week, we were taught about angles. We know now that an acute angle is under 90 degrees, a right angle is exactly 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is over 90 degrees, but below 180. Additionally, we practised some division and we were making 26 with the most efficient strategy possible.

Our continuous topic is Health and Wellbeing, Resilience. We know that a resilient person is one, who never gives up, always tries best, knows that after a ‘down’ in life, there is always an ‘up’. We were VERY resilient too – when we were doing the ‘mile a day ’. Although it was quite hot and doing 6 whole laps around the field is quite tiresome, we managed it in the end 🙂

As you may know, Pope Francis has asked everyone to pray to the Virgin Mary to end the coronavirus pandemic, therefore, we were praying to Mary, too.

It’s fun learning another language! This week we were still revising our knowledge of how to say numbers, colours and simple greetings in Spanish.

Lastly, we painted our very own pictures of the Eiffel Tower painting by George Seurat using paint and cotton swabs. Our paintings were very good, not as good as his!

Have a lovely weekend – and remember; we have Monday off! 🙂

Kind Regards,

Anna Koziel

Lots of work in P3/2

In Literacy,  we have been learning about the features of an information report. We know that an information report needs a title, general statement, a description and an evaluative statement at the end.  In Grammar, we have been learning about irregular past tense verbs. We know that you cannot just add ‘ed’ to the end of these verbs. An example would be swim and swam.  We are continuing to learn how to form our cursive script.
In Maths, we finished our money topic this week, rounding off by learning to use an empty number line to calculate change. We also created some money posters to show what we have learned about coins and change. We have started to learn about rounding to the nearest 10. We know that if the number has a 1,2,3,4 in the ones column we round down to the ten before the number and if there is a 5,6,7,8,9 in the ones column we round up to the next tens number. We enjoyed playing lots of rounding games such as bingo.

In Health and Wellbeing, we have continued to learn about regulation strategies which is the yellow cog. We thought about our worries (triggers – the blue cog) this week and chose a regulation strategy that we could use when we feel these worries.  We know that we can have big and small worries and we can think of different strategies to help us with these worries.

In RERC, we have learned about Pentecost. We know this is when the Holy Spirit came to the Disciples and blessed them with the gift of speaking all languages to share the good news of Jesus. We know that the disciples then spread the good news around the world.

In PE, we were playing team games to try to earn points.

In Social Studies, we have continued our learning on climate zones, focusing on the Mediterranean climate. We know about the countries, weather, food and languages that are spoken in this climate. We made tourism posters to advertise holidays in this climate. We also look at animals that live in the temperate zone and we tried to draw a picture of a hawk.

In Science, we have started a new topic about Energy. This week we have created a mindmap to show our understanding of the different types of energy we have in our world. We know energy makes things happen.

What a week in P2… have a read.

We have been learning about capacity, volume and about a litre and half of a litre. We know that 1L is 1000ml so half of a litre is 500mg. The capacity is the total amount of space in the container. Volume is the amount of something in the container.

We were learning about a new sound this week o-e, like home, alone, stone, broke etc. We also were learning about ‘Narrative Writing’. First, we create a narrative planer, then we wrote our narrative writing using: A title, an orientation, a complication and a resolution. We also practised our handwriting, paying special attention to keeping our writing neat.

In RE we were learning about the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were so happy that there was finally one person who helped this poor man.

In our topic, we are going to learn this term about Healthy Body- Healthy Mind. We will be learning more in-depth about SHANARRI. S-safe, H- health, A-active, N-nurtured, A-achievement,  R-respected,  R-responsible, I-included

In science, we planted our Sunflower seeds, and now we look after them, by watering them every day. We started to observe their growth by using our Sunflower Dairy. It was such an interesting experience.

Outdoor learning was fun too, Mr Muldoon showed us some great games and even the weather was not too bad this week.

In Spanish we were learning about Los colores, we were playing the ‘Corner Game’ using Spanish the language.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

Kind Regards,

We were learning about speech bubbles and speech marks then we made our own comics using all the knowledge we gained. We were learning about a new sound i-e, we know now how to read words bike, like, white etc. It was not very tricky.

Outdoor learning and doing a mile a day were great – especially in this lovely weather we have been having, recently.

In digital learning we were learning how to use the Paint app – we loved it!

Also, Yesterday was national EARTH day so to celebrate this, we wrote acrostic poems about our planet, it was so interesting, later we learned how we can save our planet by learning about Global Goal no. 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, so we made some posters about this and agreed on some next steps. We decided to bring our water bottles as much as we can but if we forget, we are going to use just one plastic cup per day. The cups will have our names written on them so we will know who has which cup. We also decided to not moan when we have to wear clothes after siblings and that it is a good idea to give the clothes that are too small for us to charity. It will help our Earth definitely.

Lastly, as part of R.E., we carried on our discussion about Easter and what happened then.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!!!

  • In Maths we were learning about money. We were playing in our toy shop, but also we were using ITC games and traditional worksheets. We were adding using the Rekenrek. The most effective way this time was the near double strategy.
  • We prayed for people who died in our families and for the brave soldiers who died for our freedom as well.
  • In science, we still continued to expand our knowledge about our senses. We were learning about the sense of smell. We were talking about the most beautiful and the most disgusting smell for us.
  • We also had lots of fun during PE and outdoor learning. This week we made 3D shapes from outdoor resources (sticks, stones etc.)
  • We were learning about Road Safety. We know how important it is and we know that we need to: Stop – Think – Use our senses to make sure we are safe when we are going to cross the road.
  • We also had some time to learn about emotions. The topic for this week was about behaviour. We were discussing why sometimes our behaviour is not appropriate and what we can do to change it.

Have a nice weekend,

Mrs Koziel

Have a look at what we have done.

  • This week we were practising our sentences and we remembered about capital letters, finger spaces, adjectives, and full stops. Also, we were learning about the sound ‘ee’, ‘oo’ and ‘ck’ as well as reviewing the previous sounds which we have learnt before. In our Big Writing, we wrote a ‘Friendship Recipe’ and that was a very interesting experience. We were learning about past tense (eg. adding ‘ed’ at the end of a word or changing  ‘go to went, see to saw, buy to bought’ etc.)
  • We also were learning about differences between a fact and opinion. We know that a fact must be proven and opinion is only our point of view.
  • At Maths we practised counting in 2s forward and backwards and we were looking for the most effective way to make a number using the Rekenrek.
  • We were working hard to learn how to analyse data using pictures and Bar Graphs and also Tally Charts.
  • In RE we were learning about All Saints and All Souls Day. We were praying for the people who died in our families.
  • In Science, we were learning about senses. The next sense which we were learning about was sight. We know how important all the senses are.
  • In Art, we were making our Remembrance Pebbles. We painted them white and then we drew lovely poppies on them. We also made firework art when we were learning about staying safe during Bonfire Night.

I hope you will have an amazing weekend.

Kind Regards,

Anna Koziel

P3/2’s week

Here is some of the things we have been about learning about this week:

  • We have started a new topic – Sun, Moon and Stars. We started to read the story of ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. We learned about Plop the baby barn owl who is afraid of the dark.  We looked a description of him and how the author used adjectives to describe him.
  • With rekenreks we have been learning about doubles and near doubles.
  • We have been continuing to practise our handwriting. We have been revising the letters p, h, u and r.
  • We created our own characters in writing. We had to use describing words (adjectives) to describe our characters appearance and how they behave.
  • In numeracy we have been learning about adding 1 , 10 and 100 to a number. We know that adding one changes the ones number, adding ten changes the tens number and adding 100 changes the hundreds number.
  • As this October we were saying a decade of the rosary. We know October is one of the months of Mary.
  • We were using the bee bots and the ipads to do some coding this week with Miss Gibson.
  • We used oil pastels to create an owl image on black card.
  • We had some PE outside and were playing listening games. We are trying hard to improve our listening.
  • In P3 science we thought about sounds we liked and disliked.
  • In P2 science we were learning more about forces and building ramps for toys.

We are looking forward to our October holiday.

Busy time in P3/2

This week in P3/2 we have been:

  • doing drama outside.  We were pretending to be Miss Trunchbull and Bruce Bogtrotter and thinking about how they felt and spoke to each other.  We then created a new ending to the cake scene.

  • In Numeracy, we have been learning more about place value. We have been playing different games including guess my number. We managed to guess Mrs Canning’s number more than once.
  • In Art, we were learning about Picasso and we went outside to create our own Picasso inspired faces using leaves, twigs, stones and anything else we could find outside.  We also used chalk.

  • In Literacy, we were making predictions about a story called the Clock tower.  We had to guess who was in the tower, why the balloons changed colour and why we thought there were balloons in the town.
  • We started reading new books this week and we made a prediction about what we thought the story was about.
  • In RERC we were looking at our school values and thinking about how we show these values in St Nicholas. We know the values are respect, kindness, trust, honest, friendship and fairness.
  • With Miss Doolan we have been learning about Jack and the Beanstock. We had to make an accent, we had to clap the beat and we were making pictures.
  • We were also learning about Mary and thinking about what we think of when we think of Mary.
  • We  have been learning about our emotions and we made dream catchers and thought about our good and not so good dreams.
  • In Spanish we were learning the days of the week and months of the year.

What a busy week!

P2’s busy week.

Such a lovely week in P2

  • In Maths, we were learning about Place and Value. We know now about hundreds, tens and ones. We were learning how many ones are in a ten and how many tens are in a hundred. We were recapping counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s forward and backwards. In our Maths Journals, we had some fun finding many ways to show the number 10 e.g. 5 people have 10 legs all together.
  • In Spanish we were practicing basic greetings such as: Buenos Dias, Buenas Tardes, Buenas Noches, also Como estas ?, Bien – good or Mal – bad.
  • In literacy, we were learning about proper sentences with capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, whilst neatly writing on the line from left to right. We know now that sentences need adjectives so that they are more interesting. We were also learning about predictions, which means that we were guessing what is going to happen in the story.
  • In Art we continued Wassily Kandinsky’s expressions. We made lovely pictures using circles, triangles and squares. During our art expressions, we were listening to classical music.
  • In Health and Wellbeing, as part of our SHANARRI topic we were learning about being Safe, we were talking if we feel safe at home and in school and what to do to feel safer in various situations.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and see you on Monday,

Mrs Koziel

P2’s Great Work!

  • we have doing drama outside pretending to be characters from Matilda and using facial expressions to show our feelings.

What a busy week!

Primary 4’s weekly update

This week Primary 4 have been busy learning lots of things on Teams. In Literacy they have been working on homophones (there, their and they’re) and practised to using adjectives, connectives and different openers to upgrade sentences. They did such a good job with this task that their teachers had a really hard time choosing the top 3 from each class! They also made some wonderful posters, SWAYs and PowerPoints describing the positive qualities of someone they admire. It was lovely to read all the nice things they had to say about their mums, dads, aunties. In Maths P4 have been working on the 6 times table and learned to use the words likely, unlikely and impossible to talk about probability and chance, for example, It is likely that it will rain tomorrow. Some of our P4s also enjoyed learning about Spanish painter Picasso and made beautiful abstract masks.

Well done Primary 4!

P2 Weekly Update.

We are finishing our seventh week of home learning. We did a fantastic job as usual. Have a look at what we have done.

To broaden our knowledge of literacy we used Oxford Owl and read a book of our choice aloud with the excellent expression. Then we answered blooms questions.

We were practising our spelling words in pyramid writing. Then we logged into Sumdog and completed the spelling challenge set.

Also, we created poems about Spring, using our senses.

In addition, we were practising our handwriting by writing our addresses.

Knowing how to add numbers is a very important life skill. So for maths, we revised addition by playing games, filling worksheets and completing the Sumdog challenges the teachers had set for us.

Que clima hace hoy? What is the weather today? In Spanish, we were learning about weather vocabulary. It is good to know other languages.

We did research online about living creatures that live in our local Union Canal.

Capturing spring on a piece of paper may not be easy for everyone but for our young artistic minds it was ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy’.

May is the month of Mary so we discussed with members of our families why we honour Mary so much. As well as that we watched videos from the Bible Beginners channel on YouTube.

‘Who we are and what we are good at is not fixed.’ All of us are unique and we all have different talents but that does not mean that we cannot get better at things. We looked back at all the skills we have learnt since the time we were born.

Here is what some of our pupils said:

‘I did my missing numbers within 50 without a chart!!’

‘Still loving my sum’s more than writing but love learning different subjects’

‘Working hard in my writing, I think you will be impressed with the amount I have written and how many WOW words I’ve used during home school’

Primary 2 have been working very hard at home. Have a look at our blog to see what we have been learning in this short week…

In literacy, we have revised our common words to help us consistently spell them correctly.

We used the  Oxford Owl website to explore a variety of books and write a summary about what happened in the book we read.

We have also written about our feelings in our jotters. We wrote about how we feel spending so much time at home.

In maths, we have been learning about estimation. We have had some worksheets where we had to guess what number should fill the blank space on the number line. We also played some math games using the new skill of estimating.

One of the subjects in school is to learn another language. Since we are learning at home, we asked our parents for permission to have an account on Duolingo to help us uphold the knowledge of Spanish and take it to the next level.

Creativity is in everyone. It is also in all the children of P2! To use our talents and imagination, we gathered different materials and created a unique picture of what WE think spring looks like.

As May begins, we are going to try to have a better relationship with Mary the Mother of God and God himself- Our Father, by praying to them every day in our own words.

Making the right choices in our day – to – day eating can sometimes be difficult. Luckily, we know exactly what to do because we have been cutting out food and putting it on a paper plate to make a healthy meal for ourselves. This will help us to know exactly how to eat healthy in the future.

Thank you for the lovely pictures we have received so far. Remember to keep sending us pictures of your amazing work.

Take care everyone and have a nice and safe weekend

Mrs Alexander and Mrs Koziel

Cushions, inventors, recipes, digital Art and more in P4!

Primary 4 have been working really hard from home this week learning about subtraction, weight, making plurals, using Microsoft Paint to make a painting, keeping fit with the cushion challenge and learning about Scottish inventor Alexander Graham Bell.  This is what P4 said about their learning:

-This week I enjoyed doing Art.

– It was fun to learn chimney subtraction.

– I can use what I learned about the past tense, for example, to say “I ate a cake.”

– I learned to do kicky upees because I practised a lot.

– I enjoyed finding out how Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.

– I enjoyed learning about Alexander Graham Bell in Literacy, removal strategy in Number talks and how to draw the world on MS Paint.

P3 Home learning

This is our third week of learning at home.  Here are some of the things we have been learning about.

We have been `researching a Mediterranean climate zone and then creating a poster or video about why we should visit this area.

We have been using money this week to practice paying for items and calculating the change.  We have tried to make our own shops at home and also used topmarks games to help us.

We have been practicing common words this week and also writing  a diary about what we have been doing during this time.

We have been practicing making tens in number talks.

We have use the art hub to complete a drawing tutorial this week.

We have also been learning about things that dissolve and completing an experiment with things we have at home to discover what dissolves and what does not.

We have also tried to use dance mat typing to help us improve our typing skills.

We have also tried some additional challenges like building a den at home, doing P.E with Joe Wicks, watching the animals at Monterey Bay Aquarium and playing sumdog.  Here are some examples of fantastic home learning in P3.

Art in the Garden

Primary 6 have been learning about tourism in Scotland and have been investigating different tourist attractions. As part of our studies we decided to take an art class at the Botanic Gardens.

We learned how to create a piece of art using the skill of batik. We began with an expedition through the desert and the rainforest (greenhouses) where we drew plants that would inspire our designs. We magnified our designs and then traced them onto fabric. We then went over the design with hot wax and used fabric dye to add colour.

This was the best art we have ever created !

P3’s week

This week in P3 we have been:

  • We have been learning to take notes.   We know you don’t need to write full sentences with capital letters and full stops. We use bullet points.
  • We have been learning the 3 times table. The pattern in the answers is odd/even. We know that you add 3 each time.
  • We have been learning about patterns.
  • In handwriting we have been joining words like quickly, skipping and jump.
  • We had Mass on Wednesday for Ash Wednesday.  We know that we get ashes on our foreheads and it is the start of Lent. Lent is when we prepare for Easter and we try to give up something, or do more of something.
  • It was pancake day on Tuesday.
  • We learned about the 10 commandments that God gave to Moses. We know the 2 most important  rules are: love God and love your neighbour.
  • In Music, we learned about on the street music. we were learning about body percussion – clicking and clapping.
  • In Spanish, we learned about colours we love and don’t like.  We know how to say this in Spanish.
  • In P.E we were learning how to do knots and crosses. We were also playing ‘King ball’ which was a Kings and Queens game.
  • Yesterday we listened to a talk from a Robotics engineer. He has designed lots of different robots.
  • We also completed our engineering competition designs.
  • For writing we were learning how to write an opening.  we had to think of different openers and remember them.
  • We were learning about poems.  We listened to the poem and then drew pictures to go with the poem.

What a busy week! We can’t wait to see what we will learn next week.

P3’s busy week

This week in Art we have been making pictures and using pattern and colour to make our art work beautiful.

In numeracy we have been learning our 5 times table.  we know that it is counting in 5s and each time you add another 5 on. The pattern is that the numbers end in a zero or five.  we know that 5×10=50 and that is the same as 10×5=50.  it has an even and odd pattern.

In handwriting we have been joining m, n and s. In P3a, we were writing the word grandmother without lifting our pencil from the page. Some of us were very shocked that we could write such a  long word.

We have been looking at Broxburn for our topic. We have been learning about the features of the area. We made a map to show where things are.

We were learning to take notes in Literacy. We know that you don’t need to write proper sentences with full stops and capital letters. We use bullet points to write our notes.

We had visitors from Stantec to talk to us about engineering this week.  Sam and Gil are engineers – one is a water engineer and the other is a civil engineer. We learned that they design bridges, houses and design ways to stop flooding.  They talked to us about how long projects can take. They told us about different materials that can be used. We are now going to enter an engineering competition and we need to design something to make the world a better place.

In RERC we have been learning  about the parable of the ‘Lost sheep’. The sheep are each of us and the shepherd is God. We know that God always loves us and forgives us and wants us to be happy.

The Swimming Pool – Version 2

Primary 6 made the biiiiiggggeeessstttt artwork in the school ! We were inspired by the artist Matisse who is famous for ‘painting with scissors’ when creating collages. We learned all about Matisse because he has some of his work on display at the Modern Art Gallery in Edinburgh.

We worked collaboratively to create a marine scene using shapes of sea creatures and swimmers. If you wish to see this art work coming together then watch our time lapse clip on Twitter.

  • In Science we discussed how different sounds are made. We investigated different musical instruments and sorted them into categories depending on how these sounds are made.

Learning and making 😁

We have been taking part in a drawing and engineering contest.

In the drawing contest we had to draw what ever we want and John Byrne  would pick and it’s a Scotland competition and there is only 1st 2nd and 3rd.

in the engineering contest you have to think of something that people mmay struggle with daily and draw that invention then write a letter to Clydesdayl University to  persuede them to make your invention and win. 👍 🏅post by Maisie and Ethan

Our Local area

Primary 3 and 3/2 are learning about Our Local Area this term as part of our school topic on Scotland.

This week for homework we interviewed our mum and dads about why they chose to live in this area. We found out that some of them chose to live here because it is a nice area, it is quiet, its very green, houses are cheaper than in Edinburgh so they could buy bigger houses and a lot of our families live here. Some families have lived here for over 20 years and others are new to the area.

Next week, we are going for a walk along Broxburn main street to look at the different shops and buildings we can see. We are then going to build Broxburn in our area. Please make sure you have a water proof jacket for our walk on Monday. If you have any old cardboard boxes could you please bring them into school to help us to build our 3D model of Broxburn. Thank you.

We will post photographs of our model when we are finished it. We can’t wait to start this next week.

Primary 1b’s Stain Glass Windows

This week Primary 1b have been learning about churches. Our favourite part of churches are the beautiful stain glass windows. They are so colourful!

We decided to make our own to decorate our classroom. We drew a huge squiggle with a pencil on the tracing paper, and then coloured in each section with a different colour, using felt tips. We are very impressed with them.

P3 Pharaohs

This week Primary 3 have been very busy learning about Pharaohs. We made our own Egyptian Pharaoh death mask. We also completed a fact file of information about Tutankhamen.

Did you know:
Tutankhamen was the most famous pharaoh – Freya
Tutankhamen was a pharaoh when he was only 9. He died at 18 years old. Beth
He was a pharaoh for 10 years – Hubert
He married his sister – Warren

Look at all our hard work.

Fantastic River Nile Art work

Primary 3 have been learning all about the River Nile and why it was important for the Ancient Egyptians. Look at our fabulous collages. We used lots of different materials to create our collages.

Did you know that:

The River Nile floods every year and leaves black fertile soil so that crops can be grown. Freya

The River Nile helps the plants to grow and makes food for the people of Egypt. Maya

Flacks was grown at the side of the River Nile and they use it to make clothes. Katie

They used the water from the River Nile to drink. Robbie

They travelled up and down the River Nile to trade with other people. Emily

Papyrus was grown at the River Nile to make paper. Clara

They also used the papyrus to make boats. Harris

They used the mud from the River Nile to make bricks for houses. Millie

The River Nile gives animals food, water and somewhere to live. Grace

Fish live in the River Nile and the Egyptians could fish for food. Molly

They could use the water to cool down and wash in. Amie-Lee

Primary 3 Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Today we had a great day celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! We learned about the life of St. Patrick in Literacy, Maths and R.M.E lessons. We read all about the symbols of St. Patrick’s day then answered comprehension questions. We used our knowledge of times tables to create a picture of a leprechaun and we learned how St. Patrick used a shamrock to tell people about God and the Holy Trinity. After looking at symbols of luck, we discussed how we are all lucky in different ways.

Mathematical Art – Cubism

Article 29

You have the right to education which develops your personality, respect for other’s rights and the environment

We have been busy working on our mathematical artwork, which has been inspired by Cubist painters like Georges Braques, Pablo Picasso and Carlo Rossi.  We learnt that Cubist painters used lots of shapes in their paintings. Sometimes they didn’t even look much like the object they painted.

We took this opportunity to revise our knowledge of the properties of 2D (number of sides and right angles, whether the shape was regular/irregular) and 3D shapes (faces, vertices and edges).

We also used our ICT skills by using Microsoft Office Word to type up what had inspired our own paintings.

Look at some of our masterpieces, or pop in and see them in the classroom!

In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle…

Primary 5b have been learning all about animals of the rainforest!

We worked in pairs of research teams and were given an animal to create a fact file for, all the fact files were to be published in our very own ‘Rainforest Encyclopedia’!

Some of us had animals we had never even heard of like an okapi (which is actually a horse like creature with zebra legs!) or a gaboon viper (which is a deadly snake!), before we started our research another research team set us some questions to find out about our animal, such as; How long does it live for? Is it poisonous? What does it eat?

We went off in our research teams and used the internet and books to find our information. Then we used Mircosoft Word to create eye catching fact files with images and different fonts!

Once our fact files were complete and in the encyclopedia we presented them to our class, some of the facts were amazing… Did you know a blue morpho butterfly has a lifespan of only 115 days? The harpy eagle has a wingspan of over 7 foot!

We then provided each other with quality feedback on the presentations, we looked at each others fact files and tried to decide if they had provided enough information or answered all the questions they were asked, then we left comments for the researchers to read! We are hoping our wonderful encyclopedia will be filled with amazing information all about the rainforest as we continue our topic!

We then started to draw our animals for our rainforest display! We had to use maths skills to create a grid to help us draw our animals in proportion! First we drew the outline in a light coloured pencil, then we began to shade and mix colours to make our drawings really realistic! What do you think?! Come and see them for yourself in our classroom display!

Next we are moving on to classifying animals as vertebrates or invertebrates, then mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles!
