Primary 1 Here We Come!

As we reach the end of our summer term the staff at St Nicholas ELC would like to wish all our pre-school children lots of luck as they start a new and exciting chapter.  We know all our little learners will embrace the learning experiences Primary 1 has to offer.  We are truly delighted the children experienced a successful transition.  The experience helped the children to prepare and feel confident about making the transition from nursery to Primary 1.  All our little ones welcomed this experience and particularly enjoyed meeting their buddies.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents, carers, grans and grandads for all your support throughout the year, it is very much appreciated.

Good luck to everyone on your first day of school, we will miss you lots.

A great week of learning in Primary 3 and 3/2!

Hiya!

This week in numeracy we have been learning about capacity. This is how much something can hold. With a partner we made containers with a piece of card and filled them with rice. Then we used scales to see how much our containers could hold!

We learnt about Ascension Day. This is when Jesus went up to Heaven after 40 days on Earth.

In literacy we have been learning about writing narrative texts. This needs a title, orientation, complication and resolution.

In spelling this week we went outside. We drew the alphabet with chalk and played jumping games to spell our words.

Image

For our Ancient Egyptian topic, we have been learning about hieroglyphs. It has so many characters! We tried to write our names.

Thanks for reading our blog this week! See you next time 🙂

Our week in P3 and P3/2

Another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Read all about it below.

In numeracy, we have been learning about length.  We have been measuring different objects and lines.  We know that you measure in millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.  We know that millimetres is the smallest unit of measurement. We measured lots of art straws and tried to create a picture with them.

In literacy, we have been continuing to learn about writing narrative pieces of writing.  This week we wrote about a Pharaoh in a desert. We have also continued to learn about speech marks and when to use them.  We have also been spotting the silly word this week in a passage.

This is health week for us and we have been trying to do the daily mile. We also had a taster session of Judo which was great fun. This week we also thought about things that we are grateful for. Then we worked together to create a poster about what is most important to us in St Nicholas.

In Fun Start Fitness, we were learning about the importance of Water.  We know we need to drink 2 litres a day and that it is the most important resource on earth. We enjoyed playing team games and encouraging each other.

In RERC, we have been learning about the importance of Mary and other names that she is called.

In our Egyptian topic, we started to find out about some of the Egyptian Gods.  We also presented our group posters about the Egyptians to our class.

We are looking forward to our Monday holiday. Thank you for reading our post.

Spring has Sprung

100,000+ Best Free Summer Images in HD

Hello to everyone and a warm welcome to all our new children and parents.   Here is a little update of what our little learners have been up to.  It’s certainly been a very busy time in nursery with lots of fun and exciting activities taking place.  The children have been learning all about spring and have embraced having the opportunity to share their knowledge, thoughts and feelings to develop their learning further.  The children loved working as a little team to tidy and prepare their garden for Spring/summer.  It has been wonderful to see our little learners work collaboratively and take pride in their garden.  We have also been busy planting sunflowers and the children were delighted to plant some strawberry plants which they have been taking good care of.  The children enjoyed taking a closer look at the plants and discovered all plants and flowers have roots.  This was a fantastic opportunity for us to learn more about the biology of a plant. After lots of interesting discussion with the children we decided to create our very own garden centre, this was a great extension of their learning.  It was wonderful to hear and see the children share their own experiences and come up with lots of ideas for the garden centre.  The garden centre shop provided the children with lots of fantastic learning experiences covering all curricular areas.  The children were observed engaging in some amazing imaginary role play using a good range of language and increasing vocabulary.  The children absolutely loved using the scales and the till which encouraged the children to use lots of mathematical language too.   Everyone has also had the opportunity to make their own sunflowers using lots of natural resources.  It’s been wonderful to see children produce their own individual art work they have displayed great creativity, we certainly have very creative children at St Nicholas ELC.   It has been lovely to see children embrace lots of learning opportunities.  Well done everyone!

Here are a just few photos of what our little learners have been up to over the Spring period.

Our week in P3 and P3/2

What a busy week we have had in P3 and P3/2.  Read all about our learning below.

In literacy, we were learning about speech marks and speech bubbles.  We know only the words that a person would say out loud goes inside the speech mark.  This week we started to learn about Narrative writing.  We know that it needs a title, orientation, complication and resolution.

In numeracy, we have been learning about more about fractions.  This week we were focusing on tenths.  Lots of people think a tenth would be a bigger number but it is actually a smaller amount of an object or a number as it has to be split into ten equal parts.

In art, we created an Egyptian pyramid drawing.  We painted the background to create the sunset then we drew the pyramid following instructions.  We then stuck the pyramids onto the background.  We think they look great.

In health and wellbeing we were thinking about things that we do for ourselves.  For example, reading, drawing, going outside and playing music.

In RERC we were thinking about Mary and why she is important.

In PE this week we were doing high jumps. We had to jump very high.  P3 started Fun start fitness this week with James Pegg.  We were learning all about encouragement and the importance of team work and communication.  The games we played were fun.

In our Egyptian topic we were doing some research this week using books, Ipads and laptops.

Thank you for reading our post!

Environment: Protect our seas and our future!" Poster by Koebque | Redbubble

We have been busy bees in Primary 1! Read on to find out what we have learnt.

Literacy

We are writing more and more as each week passes.  We write about our weekend news, practise writing sentences that our teachers dictate to us AND we have made more posters persuading people to look after the world an our seas. Our teachers are so pleased with us all.

Numeracy

We have been learning how to share, this is called division.  We have learnt that when we share equally we all have the same amount, this makes it fair. We have been sharing amongst two, three and four groups.  We have in lots of practical activities including sharing food between our class bears, using 2, 3 and 4 hoops to share cubes, pencils, pasta pieces.  These activities have been fun and really helped us to understand the concept of sharing.

Topic – Under the Sea

We have learnt about the biggest sea creature of all, the whale! We knew that they were big but didn’t realise that the blue whale was bigger than our classrooms! We also thought it was cool to learn that whales use a little hole on their head, (this is called a blowhole) to spurt out water to help them to breathe.

RERC

We listened to the Bible story, ‘The Widow’s Mite’. We learnt that the woman had only 2 coins but she gave them both in love for God. God wants us to give everything we have to him. We can do this by being kind and loving, giving money to charity, praying and singing to God, going to church.  Our teachers are very proud of how we show kindness each day to each other in class.

World Book Day

What a busy week we have had in the ELC celebrating our love of books. It was lovely to see all our children dressed up as their favourite story characters. They had a lot of fun showing off their costumes and retelling their stories. The children have enjoyed participating in lots story related activities and even had a visit to the library.

Here are just a few pictures of what they have been up to.

A Snapshot Week in Primary 2

Literacy

This week in Primary 2 we were learning about when to use the double consonant ss ending. We continued to develop our skills using exposition writing to write about our favourite coloured crayon after listening to the story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. Our reading task this week was to spot the silly word in a passage relating to our class reading books.

Numeracy

We are learning about place value and playing different games using dienes materials to help embed this concept. We collected data about the birthdays in class to create a bar chart.

Linlithgow Palace

We learned all about Royal etiquette and the expectations if you met the king or queen at a banquet at Linlithgow Palace. We also learned about the food that people would eat at the banquet. Some of it would be similar to what we would eat today however other dishes we were not keen to try like swan or peacock.

Fairtrade Fortnight

We discussed Fairtrade Fortnight and the importance of buying Fairtrade products so that we can help farmers in other parts of the world. We designed a wrapper for a Fairtrade chocolate bar.

Health and Well-being

We have been developing our gymnastic skills using the equipment in the gym hall.

This week we gathered all our work in our Snapshot jotters so that we can share it with our families.

Our week in P3 and P3/2

Read all about our week in P3 and P3/2.

We have been learning about chance. We know when things are certain, impossible, likely or unlikely. We were thinking if things had a high chance or low chance of happening. We had to separate questions into categories if they were likely, unlikely, certain or impossible.

We were also looking at Venn and Carroll Diagrams to help us  show information more clearly. We completed lots of different activities.

We made predictions for the last chapter of The Owl Who Is Afraid of the Dark which was called Dark is Beautiful. Some of us even guessed the correct title.  We were focusing on punctuation and making sure our sentences made sense during Free Writing Friday.

We made Caution posters, after learning about our triggers which make us move away from the Green zone. Knowing our triggers help us to avoid going into the Red zone.

We were learning about expositions. An exposition is a one sided argument and you try to persuade someone to have the same point of view as you. We learnt how to structure an exposition.

We drew a pocket garden which hopefully we will get to create during outdoor learning in the next few weeks.

We learnt about Joseph and his brothers from the book of Genesis. This story was all about forgiveness and reconciling relationships. Joseph’s bothers were jealous of him and were unkind to him but Joseph forgave them.

In PE we were doing gymnastics and in Music we were singing songs and playing games.

We started our new topic which is our local community Broxburn – we spoke about what we know and what we would like to find out about during the next few weeks.

A week with P3 and P3/2

This week we have spent time working on our assembly about friendship and forgiveness. You can watch our assembly here: https://sway.office.com/DK0PO3VlvcOZQw23?ref=Link

In maths we have been learning about Venn Diagrams. We used hoola hoops to help us understand.

In Literacy our teacher introduced Exposition writing. This is a one sided argument. We have decided to use this style of writing to write a letter to Elida (the fairy that has arrived in our classrooms) to convince her that it is safe to stay!

In health and wellbeing we discussed the zones of regulation. We were talking about our face and body clues for the emotions we feel.

Thank you for reading about our short but sweet week!

Primary 1’s Week – Week beginning, 7th of February.

Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) | Contemporary Issues in Teaching and Learning

Another great week was had in P1!  What did we get up to?

Literacy

Our Word Boost story this week was, ‘Grumpy Cat’, written by Britta Teckentrupp.  Mrs Mac is sure this story is about her cat, Murphy as he can be very grumpy! We enjoyed listening to this  and learning new words and their meanings, Our teachers have told us that when we learn new things we are exercising our brains, cool!

We also learnt how to form capital letters and learnt when to use them in our writing.  Our writing has really come on, our teachers are very proud of us.  We had another go at writing an imaginative story titled. The Sore Paw’.  Our teachers said that they are so good we are all going to be authors when we grow up!

Numeracy

We have been doing lots of oral number this week. We counted forwards and backwards, counted in 2s, 5s and 10s and practised our doubles facts to 20.  We also learnt how to sort out things and how to interpret bar graphs and pictograms.

HWB

We did a lot of things this week connected to looking after our mental health.  We listened to one of the Winnie the Pooh stories and learnt that Eeyore is often sad but his friends are still good friends to him and look after him.  We learnt that getting a good sleep, eating healthy foods and exercising are good ways to helping us to keep the blues away.

Topic

We looked at Scottish inventions this week.  We were amazed to learn that lots of really important things that we use every day were made by Scottish people! We were so inspired that we worked in groups to make our own inventions using junk that we had.  What fun we had working together, problem solving and listening to one another’s ideas as we made our inventions.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone!

Love, P1.

Our week in Primary 2

Literacy

This week we were working on spelling words with magic e and the vowel a. We had fun playing four in a row identifying and reading words that had this new sound. Our narrative writing was based upon the story Little Lumpty who had a problem when he climbed up the great wall that Humpty Dumpty had fell off. How could he get down safely? In reading we used the story wands to answer questions about the books we had read and to make predictions about what will happen next.  We have been reading Scottish stories and poems this week and were brilliant in our recital of Choukie Hen which we learned to celebrate Robert Burns birthday. This week we started collecting words from our story time for our Word Boost wall this week we selected: scunnered, admitted, truce, darted and shoo.

Numeracy

We were using a numberline to make backwards jumps to help us come to the correct solution to our subtraction problems. We then had to tell an alien the steps to finding the answer as he had never heard of subtraction before.  In time this week we focused on telling the time using o’clock and half past through games and activities.

Life in the Past

Our new topic will be based upon life in Linlithgow Palace during the 15th century.  This week we were finding out about the location of the Palace and devising key questions that we would like to find out the answers too. We created a huge painting of the Palace for our classroom wall.

Expressive Arts

This week we made a link between the song we have been learning with our music specialist and our art lesson. We made a paper collage of ‘Three Craws sat upon a Wa’. We enjoyed singing the song as we created our art.

RERC

This week we discussed the special celebration of baptism and the symbols relating to this special time.

HWB

We completed our well-being check in for this term and discussed any concerns with our teacher. We set ourselves learning goals for this term for literacy and numeracy. We shared the book ‘Oh, the places you’ll go’ by Dr Seuss linked to our resilience work and everyone shared the job they would like to do in the future and a place they would like to travel to in the future. Lots of great ideas ahead for these P2 pupils.

A Fun and Fantastic Week in Nursery!

It’s been a fun, fast and fantastic week at St Nicholas nursery with lots of quality learning taking place.  The children have all settled back in amazingly well and our new little children are making the most of their nursery experience.  Everyone is doing great at establishing and following nursery routines.  Following on from last week the children have enjoyed continuing with the lots of chat about Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  In order to extend the children’s learning further we have had lots of interesting discussion about bears, which has been lots of fun and most enjoyable.  Following on from some group discussion the children were eager to make their own little bears.    They loved taking part in a little transient art activity which involved using various art and craft materials to make a bears face.  The children found this activity very enjoyable which involved developing concentration as well as expressing their creativity.  The children have also engaged well with a little literacy activity which involved using the letter pebbles to make the word ‘bear’.  It’s been fantastic to see the children match and become familiar with the letter sounds.  The children have also enjoyed listening to a wide range of Bear stories, they have listened well and have loved sharing their thoughts and feelings, which has been lovely to hear.  As a little extension of this we decided it would be a great idea to sample some of the snacks that were in the stories we listened to.  I think it’s fair to say this went down a treat.  The children loved sampling porridge with various toppings as well as pancakes and honey.  Some of the children have even used large bricks to build a house and the bear’s beds.  They have been comparing sizes and have used a good range of mathematical language to describe their work.  They have also enjoyed drawing pictures of bears which are displayed in our art gallery alongside there wonderful writing.  It has been fantastic to see this topic develop and the children extend their own learning.

The children have also had the opportunity to celebrate Burns Day, we have all participated in Scottish Highland dancing, sampled Scottish food such as Haggis, neeps and tatties, homemade Scotch broth as well as oatcakes and cheese.  The children have embraced all things Scottish and it has been great to see them engage with lots of Scottish activities in order to learn about their Scottish culture.  It has certainly been a jam packed week of fun and lots and quality learning and interactions.  Our children have all been fabulous, they are all super little learners.  Great work everyone and very well done.

Here are a few pictures of what has been taking place in nursery this week.

Primary 1’s Week, Week Beginning 17th of January

It has bin a richt guid week!, (it has been a really good week).  We have had such good fun this week and especially with our new topic, ‘Scotland’.  Read on to find out what else we have been up to.

Literacy

As well as revising lots of sounds previously taught, we learnt two new sounds this week, ‘ng’ and ‘wh’.  Both of these sounds appear in lots of words, (as we found out). Now that we have a bank of sounds in our heads we are writing more and more each day and using our knowledge of these to help us to sound out words when we are reading too.  We are becoming more confident at writing independently and giving writing a go.  Our teacher are VERY proud of us all.

Numeracy

We have have had a great time learning about ‘time’ this week.  We have learnt that time never stops, (unless the batteries run out in your clock/watch)  and that being able to tell the time is a really important skill that we will use for the rest of our lives.  We have been practising how to tell the time for o’clock and half past times and are becoming really good.  We have also been practising our number bonds and learning strategies on how to find a missing number, e.g. : 2 plus what makes 5 ?

Health and Wellbeing

We learnt how to skip this week in P.E.  It was easier for some of us than others.  Skipping is really good as it helps with balance, jumping and coordination and it is fun! We also recapped the importance of looking after our teeth and were given a cool toothbrush and toothpaste to take home.

Topic

We started a new topic this week, ‘Scotland’. We looked at how our country looks from space and located Broxburn on the map.  We are learning a Scottish poem, ‘Traffic Lichts’ and drew Edinburgh Castle too.  We were amazed to find out that it was built on a volcano and even more relieved to find out that it is extinct, phew!

IDL

We are really enjoying learning Spanish and think it is super that we can chat in Spanish to our teachers in the morning  as we say, ‘good morning’, ‘hello’, ‘please ‘, and ‘thank you’ .  We are also really good at knowing the Spanish words for lots of colours and can even count to 20 in this language.  Wow!

Thank you for reading our blog, have a nice weekend.

Primary 1.

Teddy Bears Picnic 🧸

This week the children were inspired to have a teddy bears picnic after hearing the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  They had great fun engaging in role play and created their own imaginative stories, which was lovely to hear.  The children enjoyed pretending to be different family members using the bear masks and they enjoyed playing with the toy food.   We also explored mathematical language such as, big, bigger, biggest, tiny, small, smallest and middle sized.  We explored size through a game using 2D porridge bowls where the children put porridge on the small bowl, middle-sized bowl or large bowl.  They were very successful with understanding mathematical language, but found identifying the middle-sized bowl the trickiest.  Well done boys and girls.

Another busy week in P3 and P3/2

We have been working hard in P3 and P3/2 this week. Read all about our learning.

Maths and Numeracy

We have been learning about time and looking at digital and analogue clocks and saying the right time we were looking at half past and o’clock.  We have played time games on the ipads and matching games. We played a board game all about time too which helped us see the time on an analogue and digital clock

We read the story Pezzettino and created creatures using blocks and squares. We had to use fractions when colouring the creatures.

Science

We have continued with Sun moon and stars . We know the moon spins around us and we spin around the sun. The moon takes one month to go around the earth, the earth takes one day to spin round. The earth and moon take one year to spin round the sun.

Literacy:

We worked on our class novel The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark; we made predictions about what we thought might happen in Chapter Two. We also created questions to ask our partner about what chapter 2 was all about. We have continued to learn about cursive script in handwriting.   We also picked new Accelerated reader books.

PE

In P.E we were skipping with ropes.  It was tricky but fun.

RERC:

This week we were learning about belonging. We belong in the school community, the church community, in our families.

Outdoor learning

We made bird feeders and hung them outside with bird food in them so that we can see the local wildlife.

Health and Wellbeing:

We checked our trusted adults in health and wellbeing. We were also learning about resilience and about trying again after making a mistake. We were also talking about our zones of regulation and how we can feel different feelings throughout the day.

Art

We added trees to our warm and cool colour landscapes using black oil pastels. They look fantastic.

Primary 1’s Week of Learning (14.1.22)

We are pleased to be back at school and have had a super week! We have been revising some of our trickier sounds (ai, oa, sh, ch etc.) and using them to write short sentences. Our teachers are very impressed that we can do this, remembering to use finger spaces and full stops. Wow! We have been reading our new books at home and in school, and we are noticing our sight words in the stories.

In Numeracy, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards to 30, and have had a go at writing the numbers between 21 and 30. We can use tools such as Rekenreks and Numicon to build numbers to 20 and add to 10, or more. Some of us can now do this independently. We are successful and confident learners!

We have also enjoyed some Science this week, learning about day & night. We learned that the Earth moves around the sun, and when we have daylight, other parts of the world are sleeping. We used a torch and a globe as an experiment to show this before we went outside to create chalk drawings. You can see some photos of our drawings below.

In Music, we have been listening to Scottish tunes and practising keeping the beat with different percussion instruments. We are looking forward to learning more about Scotland and our culture over the next couple of weeks with our teachers.

Here are a few pictures of what has been happening throughout the month of December.

Our week in P3 and P3/2 (Week commencing 6th December)

We have had another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Here are some of the things that we have been up to:

Literacy:  This week our cheeky classroom elf came along and popped his picture on the mighty writer wall. We all worked so hard to create a super story about the elf. Our stories had beginnings, middles and endings. We also tried hard to include lots of adjectives and commas.

Maths: In maths this week we have been learning about weight. We know about the words light and heavy. We learned about different kinds of scales and we know that the unit of measurement is grams and kilograms. We weighed some wrapped up presents, models that we made and other things around our classroom.

Art/ RE: We learned about the 3 wise men and we created some amazing art work with them in it. Look out for our art work in the Christmas carol concert! We learned that their names are Casper, Melchior and Balthazar.

RE: On Monday it was St Nicholas day we learned all about his life and his generosity.  We attended mass on the computer.

We are looking forward to another busy week next week with lots of lovely Christmas activities. 🎅🎄

It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas in P1!

We have had such an exciting week that we cannot wait to share it with you all!

Our classrooms are looking all Christmassy! We have Christmas trees, decorations and lots of beautiful sparkly and colourful lights.  We also have a new addition to each of our classes, little elves !We arrived to school on Wednesday to find letters and our little elves in our classes.  The letters asked us to name the elves so we put on our thinking caps and voted.  The most popular name in P1a was Cookie.  In P1b the little elf was named Snowy and in P1c the elf’s name is Fred.  Our new friends are kindness elves and have been sent to us because they heard that all of the boys and girls in Primary 1 are soooo kind.  We are so excited to have these little elves in our classes and can’t wait to spread kindness and happiness with them.

Talking about Christmas we have been so busy working on our Nativity.  It is coming along nicely and will be ready in the next few weeks to share with you all.

Literacy

In literacy we learnt three more sounds this week, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘x’. We learnt how to recognise, say and read and write words with each of these sounds.  We also listened to a story about a fox and rewrote it.  Our writing is getting better and better each week  as we are becoming more confident writing words all by ourselves!  We are enjoying reading too.  We use our pointer fingers to point to each word when we read it.  We really enjoy reading little ditties and all about Kipper and Floppy.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have continued working with coins, counting amounts and playing with real coins.  We know that it is really important to learn about money as we will use money to pay for things when we are older.  We have also learnt a new song about subitising.  We thought that this was a funny word!  It means to be able to recognise amounts really quickly, for example if we hold up one of our hands we know that we are showing a 5.  We don’t need to count !

Topic

We made lovely little owl pictures based on the story that we read last week, ‘Owl Babies’.  We also learn more about foxes as these too are nocturnal animals.  Mrs Mac spotted one just the other night there in her street!

Thanks for reading!

Primary 1.

Quick week in P3 and P3/2

Primary 3 and Primary 3/2 have been working hard again this week.  We have been using our snapshot of learning jotters this week so that we can share our learning at home.  We can’t wait to bring our jotters home to show off our hard work.  Read all about our learning below.

In Literacy, we have using our mighty writer board to  write a story about an alien.  We have been trying to use adjectives and good openers. We have also been working on our comprehension skills after reading our class reading book.  We are working very hard on our cursive script.  We have tried to use lines in our  snapshot jotters this week so we can show our family our hard work.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about tessellation.  We know that tessellation is tiling with shapes and that there should be no gaps in the tiling. We created a tessellation using numicon, cuisenaire rods, on the laptop and on paper.

In Science, we have been learning about sound. We had to listen carefully to some sounds and guess what was making the sound.  We got some of them correct but some were tricky.

In Art, we have been learning about using line to create a pattern.  We created an image of a face with crazy hair to show all the different types of lines we could create.

In RERC we have been learning about St Andrew as it was the feast day of Saint Andrew this week.  Ask us about some facts we know about St Andrew.

In our pupil participation groups we have created a image or mascot for our group.  We had to work together to create the image.

This week we have also started to learn some new songs for a carol concert.  We are very excited as we will get to share these songs with our school community and parents.

Week 14 Learning in P2

Literacy

This week we learned two new sounds the ‘au’ and  ‘ew’ sound. We read and spelt these words in various activities.

This week we wrote an information report on African Elephants, we learned that they are the largest animals on land!

We have been focusing on our comprehension skills in reading by answering questions in relation to our reading books.

Math

This week in math we continued to recognise the value of money and used various coins to make certain amounts. We have also been playing shops using money to buy various items.

We also explored weight by comparing objects on a scale, reading a scale on ipads, and drawing heavier and lighter objects.

Wider curriculum

In our senses science topic we explored our sense of ‘touch’.  We felt various textures; smooth, squishy and soft in a bag and had to guess which texture it was. In art we made stain glass windows as it is catholic education week.

Primary I’s Week. Week beginning, 22nd of November 2021.

It has been a great week for us all in Primary 1.

What have we learnt ?

Literacy

We learnt three new sounds this week, oo, j and y.      We had lots fun engaging in play activities including : playing with yo-yos, playing in the cafe ordering food and looking at jam. We also have been practising reading our balloon words and had fun being little book detectives seeing if we could spot some of these words in our library books. We also listened to the story, ‘Owl Babies’ and rewrote this  story in our own words. We all did such a good job that we gave our teachers a dilemma when choosing a ‘Star Writer’ from each class. Our teachers are super impressed at how well we are all doing using our sounds to help us to write!

Numeracy

We have been learning how to identify and count coin collections.  We have also been learning how to count forwards and backwards in 2s and 10s which was useful to us when we had lots of 2ps to count.

Nocturnal Animals/Light and Dark.

The ‘Owl Babies’ story was a nice little introduction to us learning about nocturnal animals.  Over the next few weeks we will be finding out more about these animals and learning about the sun, moon and stars.  We will also be learning how to keep safe when it is dark outside.

Nativity

We have been practising our lines and songs for the Nativity.  We are learning lots of new skills whilst we do this including: talking to an audience, projecting our little voices and acting. We can’t wait to dress up in our costumes to retell the story of Christmas.  Watch this space!

A Busy but Fun Week in P6

Our Blog this week was constructed by two of our pupils, well done for such an informative report P6!

On Monday we had a PE lesson- Badminton and we learned how to serve.

We also learned about probability. We learned how likely it is for an event to happen (or not!).

We also looked at Literacy Circle skills and Creative Connectors throughout the week . On Tuesday we used the Isac 9 boxes with Mrs Heather to develop our problem solving skills. There was also a challenge on Sum-Dog that most people completed, we really enjoyed it because it was varied and really challenging.

The whole of P6 had a hymn practice, to prepare for the Pope Francis Faith Award, Father Jeremy came in and blessed our books, wrist bands and sticky notes. It was very moving.

On Wednesday we did Art. We looked at the Artwork of the Artist Peter Thorpe and then we created our own art based on what we had learned. We used oil pastels to create an abstract background then we drew and placed a rocket onto our art piece!

All week we have been looking at the success criteria for writing a good informative report. We then prepared for our writing by planning what we were going to report on – this week we were reporting on a planet within our Solar System. It was a planet of our own choice.

We also did PE with our teachers we played Grannies and Grandads and Shark Attack.

On Friday we started our Pupil Parliament groups, this is were we get to use our pupil voice to help our school get even better.

Catholic Education and Scottish Book week in P3 and P3/2

We have had another busy week in P3 and P3/2. Read all about our learning below.

In Literacy, we have been making predictions.  We watched a video of a girl walking along a beach and finding bubbles then we predicted what we thought would happen next.   We thought about where she might go and who she might meet. We also read  a mystery book and we had to guess what the title and front cover would look like.

In Numeracy, we have been using our knowledge of fact families to find addition and subtraction facts.  If we know one fact we can work out the other 3 facts.  We have played different games to practise our skills.

This week is Catholic Education week and we have been learning about St Margaret whose feast day was on Tuesday.  We have also been learning about making good choices.  We made beautiful prayer cards to thank God.

In our Pupil Parliament groups we have been discussing what makes a good team, how to improve teaching and learning, how to improve the school and community and how we celebrate success and achievements. We worked hard on this task and added it to a padlet.

We have also been designing a bedroom for a book character and thinking about what they would need.  Then we designed their bed covers and wallpaper.

On Monday we took home our Read, Write Count packs and we enjoyed looking through them.

What a quick week!

Learning in Primary 1 (Week beginning 1st November)

Literacy

We have had lots of fun this week learning our new sounds (‘g’, ‘v’ and ‘z’) through play activities. We have developed lots of skills across the curriculum with our class Garden Centres and Vets. We created ‘Super Veggies’ using real vegetables after being inspired by the Supertato series of books! We really enjoy role play in Primary 1 and many of us choose to play with these activities everyday.

Our teachers are also very impressed that we are all progressing with blending sounds together to read and write words, and some of us can write short sentences with the teacher’s help. We have all been very excited to take reading books home this week for the first time too. We have spotted lots of common words in our books and we had a go at reading the sentences. Well done!

Numeracy

This week we have been learning to count forwards in 2s and recognise doubles.

We have used lots of materials in the classroom to help us: Numicon, Rekenreks, dice patterns, cubes, toy teddies and toy dinosaurs! We enjoy singing along to songs and playing digital games to practise our numbers too.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We discussed Bonfire Night and how to keep safe if we are near fireworks. We are looking forward to seeing all the bright colours in the sky and created some firework art using neon paint and black card. We learned some of the words we can use to describe what fireworks look and sound like, such as ‘pop’, ‘bang’ ‘whizz’ and ‘explode’! As a Laudato Si school, we have been learning that our planet is beautiful and God-given. We enjoyed ‘Eat all your lunch’ day and tried very hard to eat everything on our plate. Food waste is not good for our planet. We also painted pebbles with flowers to contribute to our school display, showing how much we love our environment.

Autumn Splendour

This week the children have engaged amazingly with our Autumn Topic.  There has been lots of discussion about observations they have made.  It has been lovely to see the children bring in lots of different Autumnal pieces they have collected.  We decided to make a little sorting and matching area.  The children have been amazing at sorting all the autumn pieces out and putting them into little baskets.  They have also been using the magnifying glasses to take a closer look.  There has been lots of quality discussions about texture, shape, size and colour.  The learning opportunities with this have been endless, covering all curricular areas.  We also set up a little transient art activity for the children so they could use the autumnal pieces in a creative way.  I think you will all agree the children’s art work is beautiful.  This activity allowed the children to explore shape, space, pattern, positioning and texture.  There has also been lots of discussion about Fireworks night and as a result the children have been learning how to keep themselves safe.  They have enjoyed a range of stories and have made some amazing firework pictures in the art and craft area. The children have also noticed how dark it is outside.  This led to lots of discussion about how we need the lights on in order for us to see.  To  develop the children’s learning further we decided to go outside just to see how dark it was.  We all agreed it was very dark.  This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to use the torches.  They had lots of fun and explored different areas of the garden using the torches.   It certainly has been another busy, fun filled week at St Nicholas ELC with lots of quality learning and interactions.  Well done everyone!

“I’ve used conquers and leaves to make my picture”

“The leaf has brown spots on it”

“This feels jaggy”

“My daddy lights the fireworks”

“I need to stand back to be safe”

P3 and P3/2 are working hard

This week in P3 and P3/2 we have been working very hard on lots of different things.  Read all about our learning below:

In Literacy, we have been continuing to learn cursive script.  We even tried to join letters together this week. We have also been continuing to learn our spelling patterns.  In PM writing we have been learning about information reports.  We know that they need a title, general statement, description and evaluation.  We tried to write about fireworks after we completed some research on the laptops.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about doubles.  We know they are a quick way to add two numbers together. WE have also looked at near doubles as we know that 6+7 is the same as double 6+1.

In HWB, we have been looking at ways to make the planet happy again.  We know we should try to look after plants and animals and save water and energy. We created posters about all the different ways we can help the planet.

In RERC, we look at St Francis of Assisi and how he cared to the animals and nature.  We know that we should care for them too.  We also looked at the story of creation this.  We know God created a beautiful world for us and we should look after it.

In Art, we created firework pictures using black card and oil pastels.

We watched the Lorax theatre show on Monday. It was very good and was all about the environment and trees.  We know that COP 26 is happening in Glasgow and we climate change is important for our future.

Learning in Primary 1 (Week Beginning 25.10.2021)

What super fun we’ve had this week in Primary 1!  What have we been doing?

Literacy

We learned three new sounds this week: h, u and d. We are learning to recognise, write and hear these sounds in words. We have been blending the sounds with other ones to make words and we even had a go at writing some sentences together with our teachers! We are learning that we need a capital letter, finger spaces between each word and a full stop at the end. We are becoming more confident with reading our first ten common words and next week we will take home our next set of ten.

Our writing lesson on Thursday was linked to our topic, Dinosaurs! We had to use our fantastic imaginations to create a dinosaur pet. We discussed what it would look like, what size it would be and what its name would be. We drew detailed drawings of our imaginary pet dinosaurs and our teachers helped us to write down our great descriptions.

Numeracy

We have been using the Rekenreks to help us develop our number sense. A Rekenrek looks like a small abacus with 20 beads (10 on the top and 10 on the bottom), and we use it to count and to visualise numbers. We explored different ways to make numbers to 10. For example, 6 could be made from 3+3, 5+1 or 4+2. We also continued to practise counting forwards and backwards to 20 and used number lines to help us say which number comes ‘before’ and ‘after’.

Learning Across the Curriculum

We are learning lots about dinosaurs! We know that some were carnivores and some were herbivores. We have labelled different parts of a dinosaur and are taking good care of the special ‘fragile’ boxes the Edinburgh Professor Alexander sent us. We hope to find out more about what’s inside soon! In Music we have been learning songs about dinosaurs too – lots of fun! On Friday we enjoyed dressing up in our Halloween costumes. We danced to spooky music, printed pumpkin art, made masks and monsters, and were grateful to the Parent Council for our bags of sweeties. Thank you!

Primary 1

Learning in P2

Wow we have had a busy week!

In math we have been learning about patterns. We learned that patterns follow an order and that they are all around us. We made patterns with various objects including numicon, lollipop sticks and lego. This week we also learned about the properties (sides and corners) of 2D shapes.

This week we were preparing for our class mass and we chose to focus this on St Francis of Assissi. In our preparations we made lots of animal pictures and dog biscuits because St Francis of Assissi is the patron saint of animals. Our class mass was on Wednesday afternoon with father Jeremy, at the end we sang ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’.

In literacy we were learning to read and spell words with the ‘qu’ sound such as queen and quick. In writing we have been focusing on writing a description, and the key element of descriptions which are adjectives. In our writing we described our halloween costumes. We wore our halloween costumes to school on Friday and our teachers were really spooked out by some of our costumes!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

The children in the ELC have had a great week celebrating Halloween. They came to nursery dressed up in amazing costumes, took party in party games, went Dookin for apples and made some spooky arts and crafts. Here are just some of the activities they took part in.

P3 & P3/2- Week Beginning 25th October

We have had a very busy week in P3 and p3/2. Here are some of the things we have been up to:

Number: In number we have started to learn about adding and taking away. We have been focussing on 1 more,  1 less, 10 more and 10 less.  “My favourite was doing the 100 square jigsaw”. ” My favourite job was using the numicon to make 10 more and 10 less”.

Literacy: In literacy we have been looking at description pieces of writing. We know a descriptive piece of writing needs a Title, adjectives, an opening sentence and lots of description. ” This week we were writing a description of our school bags”.

Art: In art this week we have been making some spooky pictures. We made some symmetrical spiders and then we made web pictures using oil pastels and watercolour. “The oil pastel did not get mixed with the watercolour, it repelled it”.

Music: In music, we learned some songs for Halloween and learned how to use clapping to keep a steady beat. ” I liked the song about the pumpkin turning into a jack-o-lantern”.

PE: In gym this week we have been learning ball skills. We learned to control the ball by rolling and bouncing. We liked playing all the games with Mr Muldoon.

We are looking forward to celebrating Halloween over the weekend and returning fresh and ready to go again on Monday. 🎃🕸

Primary 1’s Week – Week 9.

Last week was very exciting ! What did we do ?

Literacy

We learnt two new sounds this week, f and b.  We had lots fun engaging in play activities including : making fans, fish, making flower soup, having a bear picnic and designing bags.  We are looking forward to learning 3 sounds next week as we are doing so well!

Numeracy

We learnt all about symmetry this week. We used mirrors on shapes that had been cut in half and thought it was cool that the mirror showed the other half of the picture. We also played a super game online which helped us to match the other halves of pictures.

Dinosaurs

We had a super surprise this week! We received a package from Professor Alexander.  In the package was an egg and dinosaurs to play with! We do not know what is in the egg yet but we under strict instructions to look after it. We will be spending the next few weeks learning all about dinosaurs which we are so excited about!

R.E

We have been learning that the month of October is a special month as we pray especially hard to Our Lady.  We have been learning her special prayer, the Hail Mary.  To honour her we made paper flowers which we have displayed on our altar

Welcome Back Everyone

Welcome back to all our families who have been lucky enough to have a little holiday over the October break.  It’s lovely to have all our children back and have the opportunity to catch up with all our little ones and hear all about what they have been up to.

The main aim of this week has been to settle everyone back into nursery with the main focus on establishing routines.  The children have all been wonderful and they certainly have had a great first week back.  We have had lots of outdoor play and there has been lots of opportunity to look for more signs of autumn.  The children have also been very busy making an autumn display.  They used their finger prints to make some beautiful autumn trees.  The children have loved chatting about the observations they have made.  The children have also been busy collecting various autumn pieces such as leaves and conquers.  The children have been fantastic at bringing in autumn pieces they have found whilst out and about.  Great work everyone!

Primary 1’s Week. Week 8

It has been a busy and fun week in Primary 1.  What have we been doing ?

Literacy

E and ck were the two sounds that we learnt this week.  We found it really cool that two letters can appear in words but only make one sound ! We continued to use our sounds to read and write words and are doing well.  We especially enjoy our writing lesson each Thursday. This week we spoke about the beauty of Autumn and drew a lovely Autumn picture in our jotters.  Our illustrations are really coming along.  We are trying hard to add details to our pictures and choose sensible colours to colour in.

Numeracy

We have been learning to use our pencil to count groups of objects on a page.  If we remember to do this we will never lose our place when counting and always count each object.  We also continued with the formations of numbers 1-10.  Our teachers are really proud of us all. We also learnt the names of 2d shapes and used these to make super shape pictures.

Autumn

We have had lots of Autumnal fun this week .  We learnt all about hedgehogs and made our own.  We learnt a new word, ‘nocturnal’.  We know that if we we ever see a hedgehog during the day it could mean that the little hedgehog needs help, hopefully we won’t ever see one.

Note from our teachers: Thank you to you all for your support over the last few weeks.  The children have settled in well and deserve a well earned break. Have a lovely October week and we will see you all on Tuesday, 19th of October.

Bye for now!

Primary 1.

The Autumn Leaves are Falling Down

The Autumn Leaves are Falling Down

The children have had a lovely week in nursery with lots of fantastic learning taking place.  The main focus has been looking for signs of Autumn.  The children have been making lots of interesting observations and they have all had the opportunity to discuss seasonal changes they have noticed.  The weather has been very kind to us which has been great as the children have been able to get outside to make lots of interesting Autumnal observations.  The children have also had the opportunity to go on a little walk to look for signs of Autumn.  They collected lots of leaves and we have been busy looking at the shape, colour and size of the leaves.  Some of the children have also brought in leaves which they have collected.  We have also enjoyed a range of Autumnal stories and chatted about Autumnal animals, which the children have loved and engaged well with.  After lots of discussion with the children we decided it would be lovely to make and little autumnal woodland den for the animals.  We have also made an interest table to display the leaves we have collected.  This is to allow the children to add any Autumnal pieces they collect and give them the opportunity to investigate and inspire their curiosity further.

Children’s voice

“This leaf feels crispy”.

“The leaf is green with yellow bits”.

“I love the little hedgehog, I saw one in my garden”.

“It feels cold today, I need by hat”.

“The leaves are falling down”

Here are some pictures of a wonderful week in St Nicholas ELC.

Primary 1’s Week – Week 7.

The weeks are zooming by! What have we been doing ?

Literacy

We learnt two more sounds this week, k and o.  We learnt that k and c are best friends because they have a lot in common, they make the same sound! We liked these new sounds as it meant that we were able to read more words including: mop, not, mop and kit.  We go over these sounds each day so that we do not forget them.  We have also been using our sounds to have a go at writing words.  We have to stretch the words and say them slowly to help us to  remember each sound that we need to write down.  This can be quite tricky but we know that with lots of work we will soon be amazing.

Numeracy

We have been looking at the order of numbers 1-10 and learning to count forwards and backwards from any number, eg : 4,5,6,7.  We find this funny as we are so used to counting from the number 1, however we know that this skill will help us when we start to do adding and take away sounds. We have continued working on patterns and have had lots of fun still using counters, crayons, pasta shapes to make some.

Health and Wellbeing

We have spent time this week learning about the ‘Zones of Regulation’  which is a big phrase to learn.  It means how we deal with our feelings. The Zones of Regulation will help us to  recognise that if we are ever in a situation that is making us lose control of our emotions there are lots of things that we can do to  help manage our feelings to help ourselves get back to a healthier feeling.  We have learnt that each feeling can be given a colour:

St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School - Zones of Regulation

Religious Education

We made beautiful crosses which we have displayed beside our altars in class.  We have been learning how to pray and some of the prayers that we say each day at St Nicholas.  We know that praying is special.

Bye for now everyone!
Primary 1 and Primary 1 teachers.

A quick week in P3 and P3/2

P3 and P3/2 have had a busy but very quick week.  Keep reading to find out what we have been up to.

In Literacy, we have been learning about alphabetical order.  We know the order of the alphabet. In writing, we wrote our learner statement. We thought about what we have learned this term so far in school and about our personal achievements.  We have added our learner statements to our profile.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about money.  We have been counting coins to find a total and also thinking how to use the least amount of coins. We have tried lots of different activities this week.  We will be continuing with money next week.  P3 made an art shop in class.

This week had our class Mass.  We learned about the archangels – we know three of them are St Michael, St Raphael and St Gabriel.  We had a lovely Mass with Father Jeremy. Thank you Father Jeremy.

This week we were learning about the tropical climate zone in our topic work.   We completed an experiment to see what happens when the rain falls and how the clouds get heavier.

In RERC, we listened to the story of the Good Smartian.  WE know that he stopped and helped the injured man when others ignored him.  We are going to try to be like the Good Smartian and be a good friend to others.

We also tried to rewrite the school aims in our own words. P3/2 made a video and P3 made a poster with the school aims.

This week we also had our learner conversations with our teachers about what we are good at and what we need to work on.  We also picked out our latest and best piece of literacy and numeracy work for our profiles.

What a fun but busy week!

Getting into the zone in Primary 2

Literacy

During this short week in Primary 2 we have been learning to read and spell words with the ‘ph’ phoneme such as ‘phone’ ‘photo’ ‘dolphin’ and ‘elephant’. We also explored verbs in the past tense in a recount writing activity called ‘My Holiday Diary’ where we filled in the missing verb then copied it into our jotters.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week we have been learning to count to 50 through various activities: worksheets, matching word numbers to the number and using numicon to create numbers from 30 – 50.
Topic
In our ‘Broxburn Topic’ we discussed the shops and services we have in our community such as the canal, church, school and the purposes of these buildings. We enjoyed sharing our favourite places to go – Almondale park and the swimming pool!
Health and Well-being

This week we learnt about the different Zones in the Zones of regulation: Green, Red, Yellow and blue . This helps us identify which zone we are in, in relation to how we are feeling, for example we know the green zone is when we feel happy, calm and focused which means we are ready to learn. The blue zone is when we feel tiered, bored or sick. When we are in the yellow zone we may feel excited, worried or silly. The red zone is when we feel angry and out of control.

Miss Cortellessa

Primary One’s Week – Week 6.

It has been a short week but a very busy and enjoyable one !

What have we been up to?

Literacy

We went over all of the sounds that we have been taught so far.  These include: s,a,t,p,i,n,m and c.  We used these sounds to read AND write words.    Our teachers are  very proud of us.

Numeracy

We looked at patterns and how they are everywhere! Our socks, dinner dishes, school tie  are good examples of patterns,  We made our own patterns using colours, size and shapes.  This was good fun.

Health and Wellbeing

We have continued to ‘check in’ each day in all of the classes.  We enjoy placing our name pegs and stones beside the emotion baskets as it lets our teachers know how we are feeling.

Religious Education

We learnt all that God gave us 5 senses to help us to make sense of the world.  We went on a senses walk around our playground which helped us with our daily mile.  We used our senses of sight and hearing to spot the beautiful leaves that are lying in our playground just now and listened to the crunch sound that was made as we stood on them.

We are in the middle of making autumnal pictures.  We will share pictures of these once they are finished.

Bye for now everyone!
Primary 1 and Primary 1 teachers.

This week in our ELC

Our Week in St Nicholas ELC

It’s been another fantastic week for everyone at St Nichols ELC.  There has been lots of amazing learning and lots of new and exciting discoveries made.  The children are continuing to do amazing at establishing routines and it’s wonderful to see them feeling comfortable and secure within the ELC environment.

Whilst playing in the outdoor area the children have noted that we have a family of birds, they have enjoyed observing the birds and there’s been lots of interesting conversation about the family of birds.  The children have been feeding the birds and taking good care of them.  The children also noted some seasonal change which they have enjoyed chatting about during mat time.  There has been lots of interesting observations made such as; feeling colder and leaves falling from the trees.  Through lots of interesting conversation the children decided the birds might need a nest to keep warm.  In order to extend the children’s learning we decided to listen to the story of the Owl Babies. After listening to the story the children thought it would be fun to make their own nests.  In order to do this they collected some twigs, feathers and leaves.  They all helped to make an amazing little display which included Sarah, Percy and Bill.  The children have loved this, it has given them the opportunity to use their creativity and engage in some fantastic imaginary role play.  This has also been a fantastic opportunity for the children to observe seasonal change and opened up lots of opportunity for us to explore Autumn.  We also discovered that it was the first day of autumn on Tuesday.  We are all looking forward to learning more about Autumn.

The children have also been continuing to enjoy learning about how to keep ourselves healthy.  This week the children have been enjoying lots of healthy fruit snacks.  They even had the opportunity to make their very own smoothies.  The children absolutely loved this.  They chopped up fruit and worked collaboratively to make delicious smoothies.   This was a real treat.   Well done everyone!

Children’s voice

“The birds might get cold”

“Look, they are flying from their nest”

“I hope they come back”

“Can I build a nest?”

Primary 1’s Week. Week 5

Five quick weeks since we started school,

we have learnt lots, our brains are getting full.

New routines, sounds and numbers,

it really has been fun,

Oh it’s great to be a Saint Nicholas Primary 1!

Our teachers are so proud of us all! We have learnt lots these past few weeks, made new friends and had lots and lots of fun! What have we learnt this week?

Literacy

Our sounds this week were i and n. These have been super sounds to learn and helped us to make new words to help with our blending. We looked at the words, ‘is’, ‘it’, ‘cat’, ‘pat’ ‘at’ and ‘mat’.  We are finding it really cool how the sounds that we have learnt can now be pieced together to make real words!

Numeracy

We recapped numbers 0-10.  We practised the formation of them, where they are placed on a number line and we looked at their values.  We also explored pattern.  We learnt that patterns are everywhere! Patterns can be found on plates, cups, clothes, doors and lots more places.  We had lots of fun making our own patterns too.

Health and Wellbeing

We learnt how important it is to keep nasty bugs away.  We did a little experiment where one person covered their hands in glitter  and then touched lots of things in our class.  We couldn’t believe it when we noticed that the glitter had also gone all over everything that had been touched.  Our teachers told us that this what happens with germs hat we have on our hands if we don’t keep them clean. We are very good at remembering to wash our hands but it was fun being reminded about how important it is to wash our hands to keep us healthy and safe.

Religious Education

We learnt all that God gave us special people in our lives who help us each day.  We are thankful for all of those people for looking after us and keeping us safe.

Finally… (Word from our teachers)

Have a lovely September weekend everyone! We will see the boys and girls for more learning and fun on Wednesday, 22nd of September.

Bye for now everyone!
Primary 1 and Primary 1 teachers.

P3 and P3/2 hard at work

This week we have been learning lots of new things.

In Literacy, this week we were learning about a recount. We know that a recount needs to have a title, orientation, sequence of events and a personal comment.  We looked at a piece of writing about helping mum then we wrote our own recount of our morning before school.  We also completed a Fantastic Mr Fox Blankety Blank activity.  We had to think of words that would make sense in the story.  We have continued to learn how to write more letters in the cursive script. We had more time today to write on our own during Free Writing Friday.  Some people wrote a story and others wrote about their weekend.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about ordering numbers. We know that we are looking for the smallest number of ones, tens or hundreds to find the smallest number.  We have been continuing to count in 2s, 5s and 10s forwards and backwards.

In Science, we were learning about polar animals.  Some examples of polar animals are polar bears, arctic foxes, seals and penguins.  We completed an experiment about melting ice. We found that when the ice melts the volume of water increased.

We have completed our display in the area about Noah’s Ark.  We have retold the story on a video to add to our display.

We looked at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We know that he used fruit, vegetables and flowers in his art work  We tried to create an image of our face using fruit and vegetables.

We have completed some daily miles this week.  We have given a high five on the daily mile and also found some wildlife.  P3 found a butterfly and a squirrel.

We also took part in the Hula Hut tournament yesterday. P3’s team name is unstoppable P3 and P3/2’s team name is Rock and Roll P3/2.  We worked very well together to create our name, flag and knock over lots of hula huts.

We also looked at the zones of regulation and how we feel at each zone.  We are going to start a daily check in to show how we feel.

A busy week in P3 and P3/2

This week we have been very busy learning lots of different things.  Keep reading to find out more about our learning.

In Literacy, we have been writing predictions about a story of a girl who lives in a clock tower.  We had to predict who was in the tower, why they were in the tower and what would happen.  This week we have been continuing to learn to our cursive script and have been writing letters e and f.  F was very tricky.  We have been reading lots of different books this week and thinking about our favourite characters and parts of the story.

In Numeracy, we have been continuing to learn to about place value.  We have been learning how to make the biggest and smallest number.  We have tried lots of different activities.

In RERC, we have been learning about Noah’s Arc.  We know that God made promises to Noah.  We have started to create a display for the area about the promises we wish to make to God.

In our topic, we learned about the names of all the different climate zones.  We looked at where all the different climate zones are in the world.  We know that we live in a Temperate climate zone which means we get warmer summers and colder winters. We found where we live on a map.

In HWB, we thought about how to make ourselves feel better.  Some ideas included – going for a walk, playing with our favourite toys, listening to music and watching a film.

In Music, with Mrs Nicoll we have been learning a song and with beaters we have been keeping the rhythm.

In P.E, we were learning ball skills.  We have been using the basketballs. We played different games.  We have also completed the daily mile.

In Spanish, we have been learning some classroom instructions.  We also do our register in Spanish.

Another busy week for us.

Primary 1’s Week ! Week 4

What have we been learning this week in Primary one ?

Literacy

We learnt two all about two  more sounds this week, t and p. We learnt that these are gentle sounds. We also learnt how to write these sounds. We also did some blending. We took the sounds that we have been taught and linked them to make little words.  How exciting!

Numeracy

We looked at numbers, 6 , 7 and 8  this week.  We played lots of games ordering these numbers and practised the correct way of writing these.

Health and Wellbeing

We learnt all about teeth and the importance of looking after them.  We know that if we want to keep the tooth fairy happy we must brush our teeth twice a day and make sure that we clean all of them and not just the ones that we see at the front of our mouths. We had fun cleaning teeth and cutting sticking health and unhealthy food choices on our grids.

Religious Education

We learnt all about Mary this week.  It was her birthday on Wednesday. We learnt that God chose Mary to have a special baby, Jesus.  We will learn lots more about Mary this year.

Setting Our Table

It’s been another very busy and enjoyable week at St Nicholas ELC.  The children are continuing to settle in and are doing great at becoming familiar with all our routines.  It’s been such an enjoyable time for everyone.  The children have now had the opportunity to sample some of our healthy and nutritional snacks which are offered to children mid-morning and mid-afternoon.  The children are encouraged to visit the snack table as it’s a great opportunity for them to try new foods and follow good table manners.  Healthy eating and physical activity is essential for growth and development therefore we take great pride in preparing and offering a full range of healthy snacks.  Children’s early experiences of food play and important part in shaping later eating habits and good eating habits support healthy growth and development.  The children have also had the opportunity to sample our lunches.  The children are coping very well with this routine and they are sitting beautifully during lunch.  Our lunches are offered in a caring and warm environment in order to make it an enjoyable experience and to expose the children to healthy eating patterns from an early age.  The children are encouraged to take their time and enjoy the experience of sharing a meal with their friends.   Here are a few pictures of the snacks we offer and the children enjoying the lunch experience.

Primary 1’s Week ! Week 3

We can hardly believe that we have been at school for three weeks already! Time is speeding by and we are having so much fun. Read on to see what what we have been up to.

Literacy

We learnt two new sounds this week, s and a. We learnt how to write these sounds through play using string, spaghetti and slime!

Numeracy

We learnt how to write numbers 3, 4 and 5. We have been using loose parts to help us with our counting and had lots of fun exploring pattern.

Health and Wellbeing

We listened to the story, ‘The Colour Monster’. We learnt that the little colour monster is having a hard time, as his feelings are all jumbled up. He is red, green, yellow, blue and black, all at the same time. It’s making him very confused and he doesn’t know why. Luckily, the little colour monster he gets help and learns to make sense of his mixed-up emotions. We spoke about things that make us feel happy, sad, excited and confused and learnt that it is ok to feel lots of different emotions.

Religious Education

We continued talking about what makes us special and started special pictures of ourselves that our teachers are going to hang up in the corridor. We will take pictures of these for you all to see once we are finished.

Finally…

We are learning through play. We have lots of areas set up including: a writing area, a storybook corner, a loose parts area, a construction area, tuff trays, a home corner and a craft area. It really is fun being at school!

Bye for now everyone!

Fun in Primary 1 ! Week 2.

It has been a super week for us all in Primary 1 and very exciting as we started our phonics learning and our numeracy program. What have we been up to this week?

Literacy

This week we learnt how to read and write sounds m, and c  We did this using a variety of methods including tracing the letters in sand, shaving foam and hair gel.  We made monsters for sound m , cool cats for the letter c and slippery snakes for the letter s.  We had lots of opportunity to play whilst reinforcing these sounds and had lots of fun! The construction area and the dressing up areas seem to be firm favourites!

Numeracy

For numeracy we learnt how to write the numbers 0, 1 and 2.  We learnt that there is a number zoo that will help us to form these. So far we have met Greedy Zero, Penguin One and Ticklish Two.  The number  0 is a gorilla named Greedy Zero as his tummy is the shape of a zero. The number 1 is named after ‘Penguin One’ as this penguin just loves sliding around in the snow which makes a dirty mark on her tummy in the shape of a one and Ticklish Two is a beautiful swan who looks just like the number 2.

Religious Education

We learnt that when God made us he made us unique and it is this uniqueness that makes us special.  We learnt about our teacher’s families and some of us spoke about our families and our talents.

Health and Well being

We learnt that everyone at St Nicholas has a trusted adult, someone who when can go to if we ever need help or a chat if we ever feel worried.  We also spoke about the trusted adults that we  have in our families that we go to when we need help: mummies, daddies, grannies and grandads etc..    We have chosen our trusted adult for school and know that St Nicholas is a big family where we all look out for each other.

We also made a start on our class charter.  Our charters are based on the United Nations Rights of the Child.  We learnt that at St Nicholas we ALL have the right to feel safe and listened to.

It has been a wonderful week indeed! Enjoy a well deserved rest at the weekend.

Welcome to St Nicholas ELC

It’s been a fantastic week welcoming all our lovely children and their families to St Nicholas ELC.  It has been lovely getting to know all our new little children.  They have all done exceptionally well and it has been a delight getting know everyone.  The main focus of the week has been helping our new little ones and our returning children to settle into the nursery ensuring they feel safe and secure.  They have all enjoyed getting know one another and have been amazing at learning nursery routines.  There has been lots of wonderful activities taking place to help our children feel welcomed and nurtured.  We have spent lots of time outdoors enjoying the lovely sunshine.  Some of the children noticed that our sunflowers have grown over the summer.  We thought this would be a good opportunity to measure the sunflowers to see how much they have grown over the summer.  We have also enjoyed summer walks looking for signs of summer and appreciating the wonder of nature.  The children have equally enjoyed playing inside the nursery and here are a few pictures of some of the activities the children have experienced.  The staff at St Nicholas ELC are looking forward to a new and exciting term and want all our children to feel welcomed and enjoy their time at nursery.

Good start in P3 and P3/2

P3 and P3/2 are off to a great start this year.  We have been working very hard. Keep reading to find out what we have been learning.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about different ways to show a number – we can use numicon, rekenreks, tens frames, coins etc. We have been playing lots of different number games.  We also revised odd and even numbers.  We know even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9.

In Literacy, we have started reading Fantastic Mr Fox.  We have been drawing a character description of Boggis, Bunce and Bean. We also completed a ‘picture it’ for the setting of Mr Fox’s house.  We have also completed some spelling and reading checks to see what we can remember from before the summer holidays.

In HWB, we have completed our check in and selected our trusted adults in school and at home. We also revised SHANARRI indicators and what they all mean.  We know they are Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Responsible, Respected and Included.  We have also thought about our hopes and dreams for this term.

We have also made our class charter. P3 selected the theme of animals and P3/2 selected Minecraft. We have revised our rights as a child.

In RERC, we have read the story of Noah’ Ark and created pictures of the animals.  We have also thought about how Father Jeremy is like the Good shepherd and looks after us.  We drew pictures of Father Jeremy. We also created prayers for the year ahead.

In PE, we were playing games and learning to work together.

In Art, we created a self portrait to decorate our classroom doors so that everyone knows who is in our classroom.

We also created a welcome poster for anyone who is new to the school.  We told them about the school rules, where things are and what they need to wear to school.

We have enjoyed our first two weeks back at school and we are working hard.

P3/2’s busy week

This week in P3/2 we have been very busy.  Keep reading to find out more.

In Maths, we have been  have learning about capacity and volume. We know we can measure liquids in millilitres and litres. We know there are 1,000ml in 1 litre!

In Literacy, we have written recounts of our fiction books this week. We enjoyed creating these. In handwriting, we have been using the cursive script to write the days of the week.

In RERC, we have been learning about Jesus’ miracles. We have read the stories Jesus heals Peter’s Mother in Law and Jesus heals the Blind Man. We know Jesus was able to perform miracles as He is the Son of God. The people had great faith and trust in Jesus.

In Science, we have continued our Energy topic. This week we discussed light energy and why we need to look after the environment.

In Art, we have made Fathers’ Day cards this week, we enjoyed making these and following an Art Hub for Kids video. We also created a football art work where we drew different line patterns on a football using a handwriting pen. We used lots of different patterns.

In P.E, we enjoyed our potted sports events in our Sports Day. We all had lots of fun.

In STEM, we worked as a team to create a model of the Forth Road Bridge.  WE had to make it 3D.

Some highlights from the week have been the school barbeque, watching the P1 and P2/1 Assembly and watching the Scotland game on Monday.

Fun and learning in P3/2

Another busy week in P3/2. Keep reading to find out what we have been doing.
In literacy, we have been learning more about information reports. We know we need to use present tense when we are writing an information report. We have continued to learn more about cursive script and have been trying to write some capital letters this week. We have been learning how to use contractions.  We know you use a apostrophe to replace the missing letters. For example do not =don’t, could not = couldn’t.
In numeracy, we have been using the empty number line strategy. We have tried lots of different subtraction sums. We have been putting a 100 square together and using our knowledge of number to work out where all the parts go.
In RERC, we talked about the Eucharist and how we need to be thankful. We tried to write a thanksgiving prayer to God. We thanked him for our family, friends, nature and His love.
We have used the laptops this week to help us learn to type and find the keys on the keyboard.
We had the first part of our sports day this week.  We had to races against our year group in lots of different races. It was a fun and lovely morning. We cannot wait for part two!
We were learning about fossil fuels in our energy topic. We know that coal and oil are found underground. We use energy everyday.
In Expressive Arts, we looked at the artist Piet Mondrian. He painted pictures with lots of different squares and rectangles. He could make lots of different pictures out of the shapes. He used primary colours in his art work.  These are red, yellow and blue.  We created our own picture using a ruler and the primary colours.
In HWB, we were thinking about how we can make the world a better place to live in.  We thought about the sustainability goals and how we can help the world.
This week have been presenting to our class about our hobbies.  We have learned all about painting, football, cricket, gymnastics, roller skating, swimming and cars.  The talks were fantastic!

Rainy Day Science

The children have had a fantastic week engaging in lots of new learning.  Through group discussion the children observed that we have had a lot of rainy days.  They spoke about splashing in puddles and wearing their wellies.  This opened up the children’s curiosity to find out more about where rain comes from and how it is formed.  The children listened to a story called the Rainy Day and watched a children’s science documentary which explained the cycle of water.  Through this the children learned how that the water cycle consists of four main processes which are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.  In order to enhance the children’s learning we decided to make our own water cycle diagram which illustrates this process.  Some of the children also made their own art work which illustrated and interpreted their understanding.  It has been wonderful to listen to the children use scientific terms to describe their work.  Furthermore we now plan to track how much rain water falls on a weekly basis. We have placed several buckets in the garden and will measure the water each week, we will keep you updated on this.  Please also look out for some of our fantastic science experiments which will follow in the coming weeks.

Following on from our mini beast madness blog the children have continued to make butterflies and have chatted a lot about symmetry.  In order to extend the children’s learning they have been participating in lots of smart board activities which looked at matching shapes and patterns.  The children really enjoyed this and were fantastic at matching the corresponding pattern.  The children have also been busy making various symmetrical pictures.  They have worked collaboratively and have displayed good problem solving skills.  They have also used squared paper to make their own symmetrical pattern, which is amazing.  This has been a fantastic week for fun mathematical and science learning.  Well done everyone!

Lots of work in P3/2

In Literacy,  we have been learning about the features of an information report. We know that an information report needs a title, general statement, a description and an evaluative statement at the end.  In Grammar, we have been learning about irregular past tense verbs. We know that you cannot just add ‘ed’ to the end of these verbs. An example would be swim and swam.  We are continuing to learn how to form our cursive script.
In Maths, we finished our money topic this week, rounding off by learning to use an empty number line to calculate change. We also created some money posters to show what we have learned about coins and change. We have started to learn about rounding to the nearest 10. We know that if the number has a 1,2,3,4 in the ones column we round down to the ten before the number and if there is a 5,6,7,8,9 in the ones column we round up to the next tens number. We enjoyed playing lots of rounding games such as bingo.

In Health and Wellbeing, we have continued to learn about regulation strategies which is the yellow cog. We thought about our worries (triggers – the blue cog) this week and chose a regulation strategy that we could use when we feel these worries.  We know that we can have big and small worries and we can think of different strategies to help us with these worries.

In RERC, we have learned about Pentecost. We know this is when the Holy Spirit came to the Disciples and blessed them with the gift of speaking all languages to share the good news of Jesus. We know that the disciples then spread the good news around the world.

In PE, we were playing team games to try to earn points.

In Social Studies, we have continued our learning on climate zones, focusing on the Mediterranean climate. We know about the countries, weather, food and languages that are spoken in this climate. We made tourism posters to advertise holidays in this climate. We also look at animals that live in the temperate zone and we tried to draw a picture of a hawk.

In Science, we have started a new topic about Energy. This week we have created a mindmap to show our understanding of the different types of energy we have in our world. We know energy makes things happen.

This week in nursery

we have had another fun busy week learning lots of new exciting things. We have been focusing on literacy and so we got to use some of our new resources for practicing our letter formation. Some of the girls and boys were able to recognise the letters and then trace over the top of them using a pencil and some paper using our light up letter boards.

We spent some time together learning about the syllables in our names and how to tap them out,  first learning to clap them out with our hands and then learning to use a range of musical instruments to tap out the sounds. The children all really seemed to have fun and enjoy this activity.

Primary 6

Primary 6 have had a very busy fortnight and definitely deserve a long weekend of rest.  We have been learning all about Fractions.  We have been using the cuisennaire rods and outdoor games to help us understand the concepts.  We have written persuasive letters to Design Engineers to try to persuade them to choose our creative designs to build.  We have worked collaboratively in teams to create amazing videos about ways we can prevent adverse climate change.  We have also written Manifestos and created campaign speeches for our mock elections on Tuesday.

Mini Beast Madness!

The nursery children have been very busy making lots of spring time observations this week. They were delighted to find a centipede in the nursery and used their magnifying glasses to take a closer look at it . Some children noted how it had lots of legs and moved really fast and that although it was small it was  long too. This prompted a mini beast hunt outside to see how many we could find in our garden.

Here are some of the activities that followed.

The children made this wonderful art display  which illustrates the lifecycle of a butterfly . The children worked collaboratively and discussed what materials they would use. Some children thought it was a good idea to label the illustration using some of the new vocabulary they had learned. with some adult help the were able to copy the words and display them on our wall.

Lots of mathematical language was used during our discussions.  We spoke about symmetry and how both sides of the butterfly were the same. Some of  children made some of their own symmetrical butterflies and could talk about symmetry. We played a lady bug counting game on the smart board where the children could touch count or subitise  the spots.

Another busy week in P3/2

Primary 3/2 have been working very hard tis week.  Keep reading to find out what we have been learning.

In literacy, this week we have been creating targets for this term.  This gives us a goal to work towards and we thought about how we can achieve this goal.  We also completed a narrative story about a lost polar bear.  We know all the different features of a narrative text.  We continued to work on spelling this week.  We also learned about past tense and know how to make a verb into a past tense verb.

In maths, we have been learning about measure. We have been measuring the length of things. We know that you measure length in millimetres, centimetre, metres and kilometres.  We know that there are 10 mm in 1cm and 100cm in 1m.

We have been learning about your skeleton and the names of our bones.  Our skeleton is important because it protects the organs in our body.  Without a skeleton we won’t be able to stand up, talk, walk etc.

We have been using pattern to decorate a vase this week then we used paints to create the flowers.  They look beautiful in the area.

This week we were learning to football rounders.  We were learning to work as a team and listen carefully to instructions.

We looked a climate zone and thought about facts we know about the area.  We researched the area and found out the weather of the area and animals that live there.

This week we set targets for numeracy and mathematics too.  We thought about an area we felt we needed to improve on  and how we could achieve our target.

We can change the world with our own 2 hands.

We have been very busy this week discovering lots of new information and facts about Earth Day which was on the 22nd April. Our research and discussions led us onto talking about the planet we live on and the important part we play to protect and preserve it. The children discovered the important  role trees have and the fact they act like lungs as they breath in the dirty air that we produce by the way we live and give out clean air in the form of oxygen.  It became apparent that trees keep us alive and healthy and that we could not survive without them.  We spoke about the practical benefits of trees. Some trees provide fruit that we eat and the paper we write on all come from trees.  Bees and insects got discussed so we are going to look into the importance of their role more closely next week.

Our promise to the earth.

Here we are learning about all the different parts and functions of trees.

As a nursery we decided we would do our bit in saving our planet by ensuring we turn off the taps once we have washed our hands and only use one paper towel instead of using a handful of them.  The children were keen to  ensure they placed their empty milk cartons into the correct recycle bin.  We made a big effort on turning the lights off for most of the day in the nursery.

The children really embraced this topic and stayed engaged and focus throughout.  Well done everybody you are all amazing!!!

P6

P6 are enjoying being back at school.  We have had a very productive and fun week.  We enjoyed learning about BODMAS and the order of Operations.  We worked together to help each other to understand this new concept.  We worked in teams using our IZAK9 cubes to consolidate our knowledge and understanding of BODMAS.  We got a little competitive.😀.
We researched Earth hour and we created posters to demonstrate the importance of taking action to sustain our planet.  P7 kindly helped with some brainstorming ideas.
In art this week we recreated sunflowers in the style of Van Gogh.  We really enjoyed this activity.
We also created handy hints posters for BODMAS and for Plural Spelling rules.
In Outdoor Learning P6b were crowned the winners of a tactical defence game.  It was very close and next week P6a are determined to snatch the title.  Will they succeed?

Primary 6 learn about Article 27

Primary 6 have been learning about Article 27. We watched a video of a girl in Kenya and compared her school day to our school day. Some things were the same but some things were very different. We felt emotional watching the living standards that some people have to live in.

We then made little paper houses and wrote words on them to show the things that we would expect as our rights. For example :shelter, love, food and clean water and a cosy bed.

It was very interesting learning about article 27.

HWB

Spent time outside completing fitness tasks with Mr Muldoon and our teachers.  We also did the BLEEP test! Our faces were very red after this activity !  We also checked in each day with our teachers.  We also took full advantage of the nice weather when we did a scavenger hunt around the playground.  It was a scavenger hunt with a twist though, we had to  use our 5 senses to find lots of things that smelt, things that felt smooth to the touch and lots of other things.  It was really enjoyable.

Literacy

In Literacy we wrote another letter, this time to complain.  We all had various compaints, littering, the states of local parks, people speeding in their cars, dog fouling etc… Don’t mess with the P5s as they certainly know how to put their point across! We also celebrated Roald Dahl day this week as we learnt more about the great  man himself and made up a factfile on him.

Numeracy

We continued to practise our number talk strategies including: partitioning, compensation and making tens.  We also were very active in our learning playing games to reinforce our knowledge of place value. In addition to this we also revisited how to solve calculations using the formal written method.

RERC

During R.E we learnt about Our Lady of Sorrows. We learnt that there were 7 times in Our Lady’s life when she felt great sadness.

Primary 1a, 1b and 2/1 Weekly Update

We have had another busy week in Primary 1 & 2! This week we have learned about:

“We have been learning about different shapes”

” We have been making patterns”

“A pattern does the same thing over and over and over again, it repeats”

” we learned about k and ck, we learned about o too”

“One afternoon we did some planting”

“We learned about plants in science, we know that they all have roots”

“A plant has flowers and leaves too”

“The long bit next to the root is called the stem”

P3/2’s learning this week

This week we have reading more of Matilda.  We know about the newt and Matilda put it in a glass to frighten Miss Trunchbull. We were answering questions on the story and had to answer them in sentences.  We know that you must use a capital letter and a full stop in a sentence.  We have been making predictions and trying to guess what we thought characters were feeling in a story about a Marshmallow.

We have continued with Rekenreks and we were learning about how to show a number with 2 or 3 pushes. We are working very hard with our Rekenreks.

In art, we learned about Picasso and made a Picasso inspired face using different shapes. He used lots of shapes and ‘funny parts’ not always in the correct place in his art work. We love his pictures of faces.

We have been continuing  to learn about hundreds, tens and ones.  We were ordering numbers and can find the biggest and smallest number. We made a human number line in the correct order. We also tried to make the biggest number we could with some digits.

We have been learning about good and bad choices.  We know when we make a decision our decisions have an affect on others. We know that at times we can all make the wrong choice.

This is coding week so worked on a pirate activity were we had to create a pirate name then try to find the treasure. We then went outside and created a grid to code our classmates. It was fun to direct them to find or miss an object we found outside.

Primary 6 – Learning so far

We have been working really hard across the curriculum.

Numeracy – In Number Talks we have been using different strategies to solve number problems.  Strategies include compensation, partitioning and friendly numbers.  We try to choose the most efficient strategy to solve the problem.

We have also been learning about Place Value and looking at 5 and 6 digit numbers.  We know that each digit can be placed in a column and that helps us when we are adding 10s, 100s, 1000s etc onto a large number.  We also know that zero can act as a place holder and if we forget to write the zero in a number it can change the number completely.

Literacy – We have been revising adjectives and similes and we took our learning outside.  We found natural objects such as leaves, stones and sticks and we used different adjectives to describe them and similes to compare them to other things.  We also stamped out the syllables.

We have been reading a class novel by Michael Morpurgo called ‘The Elephant in the Garden’.  We created comic strips to show important events that have happened so far.

Science – We have been learning about the solar system and we know that there are 8 planets and they are nicknamed the Rocky planets and the Gas Giants.  We took our learning outside to see the scale of the distance of the planets from the sun.  We used a trundle wheel to measure this and we realised that the part of the playground we were in wasn’t big enough to show the distance from neptune to the sun!

Drama – We have started to write our own scripts for Charlie and the Chocolate factory and are looking forward to filming these using the green screen.

We have done lots more learning and will share more next week!

P5’s Week!

Aren’t the weeks flying by ? This is what we did this week.

LITERACY

In literacy we moved on to another set of words and used lots of different approaches to learn how to spell these.  We used the reflective reader task, ‘Picture It’ to draw a character using the description that was provided.  This was a very worthwhile task to do as it taught us that skilled writers use adjectives, similes and metaphors  to write about characters.  We are going to write our own character descriptions and get a friend in class to read them and draw the picture using our descriptions.  We have also been practising our letter writing skills and wrote to the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon. We hope that she writes back, watch this space.

NUMERACY

We practised our multiplication facts.  We are really beginning to understand how important these are to our understanding in fractions and division.  We also continued to practise reading and writing 5 and 6 digit numbers and have become really skilled at reading and writing these with ease.

HWB

We managed to get outside in the lovely fresh air to do P.E.  We also completed the ‘Daily Mile’, which we love ! We spoke about being resilient and know who is on our team should we ever need help.

IDL

We continued to be mini engineers  finishing off our stop/go signs.  The designs were all fantastic and lots of thought had gone in to fulfilling the design brief.  A big well done to P5 for being so creative!

P1a P1b and P2/1 Weekly Update

We have had a busy week and have learned lots of  new things! This week we have enjoyed:

“We learned about lots of different shapes and made shape pictures.”

” We know about 2d shapes, they are flat and don’t stick out like 3d shapes”

“3d shapes are like cubes and cones and cylinders and stuff not the flat ones like circles”

“When it was sounds time we learned about t, i and n” -Primary 1

“We learned hard sounds this week we know about ai and the other ay and oa too” – Primary 2

“We found a wiggly worm in the garden and looked at him close in the bug finder” p2/1

“We did lots of learning outside the week and some of us made an obstacle course”

Busy time in P3/2

This week in P3/2 we have been:

  • doing drama outside.  We were pretending to be Miss Trunchbull and Bruce Bogtrotter and thinking about how they felt and spoke to each other.  We then created a new ending to the cake scene.

  • In Numeracy, we have been learning more about place value. We have been playing different games including guess my number. We managed to guess Mrs Canning’s number more than once.
  • In Art, we were learning about Picasso and we went outside to create our own Picasso inspired faces using leaves, twigs, stones and anything else we could find outside.  We also used chalk.

  • In Literacy, we were making predictions about a story called the Clock tower.  We had to guess who was in the tower, why the balloons changed colour and why we thought there were balloons in the town.
  • We started reading new books this week and we made a prediction about what we thought the story was about.
  • In RERC we were looking at our school values and thinking about how we show these values in St Nicholas. We know the values are respect, kindness, trust, honest, friendship and fairness.
  • With Miss Doolan we have been learning about Jack and the Beanstock. We had to make an accent, we had to clap the beat and we were making pictures.
  • We were also learning about Mary and thinking about what we think of when we think of Mary.
  • We  have been learning about our emotions and we made dream catchers and thought about our good and not so good dreams.
  • In Spanish we were learning the days of the week and months of the year.

What a busy week!

P5’s Wonderful Week

Another busy week for the P5’s! Lots of learning and fun was had!

Literacy

We learnt more spelling patterns and practised these in class.  We also used our digital learning skills to create a word seatch, this was fun!

We continued to use the roles in literacy circles to help us with our comprehension skills and did lots of reading in class.  We are making a big effort to read as much as we can.

Numeracy

We focussed on the compensation skill in ‘Number Talks’ and made posters explaining how this strategy works. We have moved on to reading and writing 6 digit numbers.  We have also practised our multiplication facts with our number partner.

HWB

We spoke about our one trusted adult and checked in on a daily basis with our teachers. We know that we are cared for and respected and can talk to our trusted adults at any time.

Topic

We got our hands dirty (not really! ) to become mini engineers and  designed a a STOP/GO sign.  We were given a design brief and then left to it and encouraged to be as creative as we wanted.  We really enjoyed this task as it made us think and none of them looked the same.  We are looking forward to doing more STEM challenges as in the bext few weeks.

RERC

During R.E we learnt that Jesus has many roles : Priest, Prophet and King. We spoke about occasions and stories from the Bible which show these roles and spoke about the importance of leading our lives in his example.

Fun in P3/2

We have had another busy and fun week. Keep reading to find out more.

  • We have read more of Matilda. We know that she had magical super powers. We thought about what we would do with Matilda’s powers when we were feeling different emotion. For example, if we were angry we might use her powers to break something. We talked lots about different emotions and why they are important.
  • We thought about Matilda’s parents and how they were quite mean to her.  We think Matilda should be nurtured by a kind parent.  We labelled and drew pictures of Mrs Wormwood.
  • We were learning about place value.  We know that hundreds, tens and ones are.  We played different games to practise making the numbers.  We used the deans material and played a matching ice cream game.
  • We played a game to see how many words we could make from another word.  It was tricky.
  • With Ms Gilmore we created a collage using different types of paper and shapes.
  • We have been practising the Hail Mary Prayer prayer this week.
  • We looked at some tricky words and tried different techniques to spell them. We tried rainbow writing, bubble writing and dotted writing.
  • We thought about making good and bad choices and why it is important to make good choices.
  • We made predictions this week in Literacy.  We watched a clip of a boat sailing and where we thought about who we thought was in the boat and where we thought it was going.  Then we watched the end to see if we were correct. We know that when we make a prediction we might not always be correct.

What a busy week!

P5’s Super Week!

It has been a great week in Primary 5 ! What have we been learning ?

In Literacy we have learnt new spelling words and used a variety of different ways to practise including : rainbow writing, bubble writing and other handed writing.  We especially like to use our other hand to write and practise our words, it is fun.

We were introduced to Literacy Circles and all of the different roles within this.  We have been ‘Word Wizards’, ‘Character Cops’, ‘Pirate Predictors’ and’Illustrious Illustrators’.  We have learnt that these roles will help us  to further extend our comprehension skills and deepen our knowledge about texts.

Talking about texts, we are reading,’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.  It has been fantastic so far but all if this talk of chocolate makes our mouths water !

In numeracy we have been working with 5 digit  numbers and learning their values depending on their place.  We have also been recapping the ‘Making Tens’ strategy during number talks.  We all agree that this strategy is a good one to use.

We have started our new topic, ‘Engineering’.  We have learnt about some famous Scottish engineers and are looking forward to making our own inventions in the coming weeks.

Last but not least, we made some beautiful stained glass windows that will be used to decorate our church for our First Holy Communions. God bless all of the P5 children who will be celebrating this Sacrament tomorrow.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Kilpatrick.

Primary 7’s Wicked Week

Check out our week… We’ve learned lots!

Literacy

We’ve been learning about poetry through the poem MacCavity. We heard a song that goes along with it – it’s from Cats the musical movie 2019. We drew MacCavity and we labelled our pictures using similies and metaphors from the poem.  We also learned about proper nouns, bossy verbs and common nouns. We enjoyed learning this very much!

Maths and Numeracy

We’ve been revising the 6,7,8 and 9 times table. It’s helped us get better with recalling these tables. We’ve also been learning about prime numbers – you can only divide them by itself and 1! In Number talks we’ve been learning partitioning and compensation. We are improving every day!

Expressive Arts

We did some Autumn art and examined Autumn colours and the change in trees losing their leaves. We did drama and music through Charlie and the chocolate factory. We learned about analysing a character and created a role on the wall for Charlie. We also began to learn about soundtracks and how these impact the atmosphere, mood and genre.

We hope you enjoy seeing our work. We are looking forward to next week :)!

P3/2 hard at work

This week in P3/2 we have been very busy and learning lots of different things. Keep reading to find out what we have been doing.

  • We have been reading Matilda and have been drawing and writing about what makes a good and bad teacher. We would rather have Miss Honey as a teacher than Miss Trunchbull!
  • We have been learning about wants and needs.  We know that a want is something we don’t need to have but is nice to have.  Our needs are medicine, water, clean air, shelter, food and clothes.
  • We have been learning about how Father Jeremy is like the Good Shepherd and looks after us. We are like his sheep.
  • We started to think about our new science topic sound. We thought about what we know and what we would like to learn.  We would like to learn about our ear and how sounds are made.
  • We have been working on some maths and number problems to see what we can remember.
  • We have been looking at a rekenrek and using it to show numbers.
  • We have also been thinking about how we can show numbers in different ways.
  • We looked at the artist Wassily Kandinsky and tried to create our own circle art work.
  • In handwriting we have been practising forming our letters correctly.
  • We practised the Our Father prayer this week.  We know this is an important prayer to God.
  • We have been learning about describing words and how to use them in a sentence to make them more detailed.  We went outside and we were using describing words to describe a stick.

We have had a busy week!

P5 seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the first week of our famous ‘Fitness Fortnight’.  Lots of fun activities were planned to get the kids active and others were to do with healthy eating.   Judging by the feedback given on Teams, the P5s had a great week.

Some of the activities that we planned included:

‘Scavenger Hunt’ – The children had to run  around the house and garden in the fastest time possible looking for household items and time each other.

‘P.E Mathopoly’ – This involved the children playing a monopoly style game with exercises and challenges scattered around rhe board.

‘Flexibilty Challenge’.

‘Mouldy Bread Science Experiment’, designed to remind the children of the importance of hand washing. The children had to handle bread with dirty hands and handle bread with clean hands and were asked to seal the slices in separate bags and we will look at the each slice again next week.

Make a healthy fruit kebab. The pictures sent in of these had ours mouths watering!

Design a healthy menu.

Write an acrostic poem on healthy eating.

Create a fitness circuit.

Design a banner for Sports Day.

To top off our fantastic week we participated in our ‘vIirtual Sports Day’.  Lots of fun activities were planned, 15 in total! Again, the children seemed to really enjoy this, well done everyone who took part. We can’t wait to see which house groups wins with the most points. Watch this space, all will be revealed !

Primary 6 Week 10 Home Learning

Primary 6 have been very busy this week with our online learning.

Maths – Currencies  The children have been learning about Currencies.  They have been trying out activities to convert Euros to Pounds – initially without a calculator then by Thursday using a calculator for some fun Currency Challenge cards.  The children were also provided with a Foreign Exchange Instruction Card for the Thursday task.  The activities were enjoyed by the children.          Great use of division strategies, Primary 6.

Literacy – Informative Writing  The children really do enjoy writing and this week we looked at Informative Writing – a piece of non-fiction writing which gives information about a particular thing.  This week’s task was to write about camping.  We provided a video about a family setting up in a campsite in a national park near Florida.  Some great pieces of writing were done using topical vocabulary and great camping facts.  Well done, Primary 6.

Topic – Our Government  Primary 6 have been learning about Our Scottish Government this week.  We started off with describing the job of a politician and we looked at their responsibilities and what a day in the life of them would be like.  We then looked at the role of the Scottish Government and created a list of priorities a government should have.  The children were asked to explain their pecking-order of priorities.  We also had a look at manifestos and the children became a politician and wrote their own manifesto creating slogans and three ideas that they thought would be important to the people of Broxburn and Uphall.  I think we have some budding politicians in the making!!

Art  The children looked at some artists’ work that expresses how the artists feel lockdown affects us.  The children then thought about how lockdown is affecting them and created their own pieces of art choosing from abstract, naturalistic or paper cuttings collage.  Each piece of art is a story about how lockdown affects them.       Great creative expression, Primary 6!

Virtual Camp  On Wednesday the children participated in ‘virtual camp’ activities to compensate for missing their camp this month.  The children enjoyed Mini Raft Making, Star Gazing, Den Building, Timing A Bed Change, Tracking Animals, Futuristic Tent Design and cooking S’mores.  The children sent us some great photos of these fun activities.  Great work, Primary 6.

Well done Primary 6!  As always we are very proud of your dedication to completing your tasks and thank you to our supportive parents too.

Primary 1 Weekly Update (W.C 8/6/20)

Well done Primary 1 for another week working hard from home. We have been busy with our home learning packs and grids and are almost ready to become big Primary 2’s now! Here are some of the things we have been learning about:

Writing: During writing time we have been learning about functional writing. This week we were focussing on writing lists and learning what a list looks like and should contain. We wrote a list of 10 things we love to hand on to our new teacher to help them get to know us better.

Phonics: We started to learn about the magic e and how he changes the sound of the vowels! This was quite tricky and we will continue to work on this next year. We watched videos and completed a sumdog spelling challenge to help us with this.

Maths:  In maths we continued our learning of money from last week. We gained a better understanding of how to make amounts using different coins and we learned to pay for things and work out basic change. We even started to learn about budgeting and used our budgeting skills to plan our own lunches online!

Topic: We have had lots of super feedback from talking to parents about how much the children are loving their dinosaur topic! This week we played some dinosaur exploring games and made dinosaur artwork from our hand and footprints!

P3’s Home Learning

Another busy week in P3. We are so proud of you all for all your hard work during this time. Keep reading to find out about some of the things we have been learning.

  • In our Egyptian topic we have learning about mummification.  We have learned about how the Egyptians completed this task.  We even tried to mummify a piece of fruit.  It was fun!
  • In mathematics we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We have been looking at the properties of the shapes and finding the edges, vertices, corners and faces on shapes.  We have played lots of different games about shapes this week. Even a sumdog challenge.
  • In RE we have been looking at stories of how Jesus healed the sick and why this is important.
  • In literacy we have been spotting the silly word in a passage about elephants. Then finding words we thought would make more sense.
  • We have also been drawing an image of a character called ‘Badjelly the witch’. We had to read the description then draw what we thought the character would look like
  • In Art, we looked at a still life picture and thought about what we liked/disliked. Then we tried to draw our own still life picture.
  • In Science, we have been learning about the skeleton and even tried to make our own from twigs and stones.
  • We also  looked at a story about ‘Oor Wullie’ in Scots and answered questions about  it.
  • We also looked at how things are made from different materials and when we recycle we need to split our rubbish into different bins.  We tried to help at home this week.  This will make us very responsible citizens by recycling correctly.

Here are some of the lovely pictures we have received this week.  Thank you P3 and well done!

P1 Weekly Update

P1 have had a busy week. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been up to…

  • In numeracy we have been revising money. We have been discussing why we need money and where it comes from. We had a go at ordering coins, sorting coins and even set up our own wee shops where we had a go at being the shopkeeper and the customer.
  • For literacy this week we had to plan a movie night for our family. Firstly, we wrote a letter to our family explaining why we wanted to have a movie night. We then created tickets for our movie night and lovely posters.
  • We are still enjoying our topic. We have been looking at dinosaur diets and researching omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.
  • For art, we followed a tutorial on how to draw an allosaurus.
  • We continued with our growth mindset series. This week we thought about what to do if we are stuck and why using the word “yet” is important.
  • For R.E we spent some time reflecting on our year in P1, thinking about what has went well and what we want to get better at in P2. We then finished with a prayer to God to ask him to help us with our journey into P2.

Thank you for all your hard work this week P1. We are very proud of you all.

Primary 6 Home Learning Week 8

Primary 6 have been very busy this week with our online learning.

Maths – Coordinates and Symmetry  The children have been learning about Coordinates :- X and Y axis, points on the grid and reading coordinates to help us use maps and find places.  The children have also been learning about Symmetry:- Finding lines of symmetry, how some shapes have more than one line of symmetry and some items have no lines of symmetry at all.  The children had fun trying out their knowledge on maps and rangoli patterns.

Literacy – Instructional Writing  The children really do enjoy writing and this week they learned about Instructional Writing.  We reminded them that Imperative Verbs (bossy verbs) need to be used e.g. Stir, Mix, Put etc.  We also showed the children how the writing should be laid out – in two parts using sub-headings; the first part for the list of items needed and the second part for the detailed steps on how to do the activity.  The children enjoyed writing an instruction on how to make a sandwich with great results!  There was an additional challenge at the end for the children to ask someone at home to follow their instructions to the word.  Well done, Primary 6.

Science – Pollination – Primary 6 have been learning about how important insects are in pollination and about the male and female parts of a flower.  They then went onto learn about different insects and animals that are pollinators and what would happen if there was no pollination.  The children created some great Sway and Powerpoints presentations sharing the dangers that bees face and how our world would change without them.

Spanish  The children watched a video that showed how Spanish children celebrate their birthdays.  They learned how to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish “Feliz Cumpleaños” and then created their own Spanish birthday cards with a special message in Spanish.  Bien hecho, Primary 6!

Drama  The children used a clip of a Doctor Who episode to take notes on character traits for three characters.  They then went onto writing their own scene for a new episode of Doctor Who and they typed their scripts up. Great work, Primary 6.

Well done Primary 6! We are very proud of your dedication to completing your tasks and thank you to our supportive parents too.

Primary 3’s week

  • We have been finding out about the different jobs that the Egyptians did.  We have learned about Pharaohs and researched some information about them.
  • We have been thinking about what makes a good friend and the qualities they need to have.
  • We have been learning about division.  We have been sharing lots of objects out and trying to complete some division tasks. We also tried a sumdog challenge.
  • We have been looking for the silly word in a passage and trying to think of words that make more sense.
  • We looked at a famous artist work then thought about what we liked and disliked and how we could make it better.  We then created our own art work.
  • We read a passage of information then tried to draw what we thought it would look like.
  • We wrote a story about going on an adventure on a rocket.  We thought about where we would go and what we would do.
  • We listened to the Bruno Mars song ‘Don’t give up’ and thought about our growth mindset.
  • This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday so we looked at what this is and what it means.
  • We thought about the world of work and thought about jobs people do.  we thought about a job we would maybe like to be when we are older.
  • We looked at cereal boxes and thought about how they persuade us to buy them.
  • We have also been trying to write our own questions about books that we like.

Most children are enjoying the science, art and topic lessons.  Well  done Primary 3!

Thank you for all the feedback and photographs this week. We have received nearly 100 photographs! Keep working hard P3.  We are very proud of you.

Mrs Canning and Miss McCormack
