Primary 6 – Learning so far

We have been working really hard across the curriculum.

Numeracy – In Number Talks we have been using different strategies to solve number problems.  Strategies include compensation, partitioning and friendly numbers.  We try to choose the most efficient strategy to solve the problem.

We have also been learning about Place Value and looking at 5 and 6 digit numbers.  We know that each digit can be placed in a column and that helps us when we are adding 10s, 100s, 1000s etc onto a large number.  We also know that zero can act as a place holder and if we forget to write the zero in a number it can change the number completely.

Literacy – We have been revising adjectives and similes and we took our learning outside.  We found natural objects such as leaves, stones and sticks and we used different adjectives to describe them and similes to compare them to other things.  We also stamped out the syllables.

We have been reading a class novel by Michael Morpurgo called ‘The Elephant in the Garden’.  We created comic strips to show important events that have happened so far.

Science – We have been learning about the solar system and we know that there are 8 planets and they are nicknamed the Rocky planets and the Gas Giants.  We took our learning outside to see the scale of the distance of the planets from the sun.  We used a trundle wheel to measure this and we realised that the part of the playground we were in wasn’t big enough to show the distance from neptune to the sun!

Drama – We have started to write our own scripts for Charlie and the Chocolate factory and are looking forward to filming these using the green screen.

We have done lots more learning and will share more next week!

P3 Weekly Update

This week we have been really artistic!  We have made some surprise creations for our mum’s for Mother’s Day and we were also inspired by Pablo Picasso and we made our very own interpretations of his work.

In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about time as we have been finding it a bit tricky, especially quarter to on a digital clock.  We are going to keep practising this at home too so that we are more confident in telling the time!

In PE we have been learning how to skip forwards, backwards and in groups.  We need go co-ordination to do this.

In Literacy some of us wrote about our mum’s and how they are superheroes and some of us created a fact file about some Egyptian pharaohs.

Some of us visited the church twice this week.  Once was to practise and prepare for The Sacrament of Reconciliation and secondly we went to Stations of the Cross with Fr. Francis.

In Digital Learning this week we were making animated cartoons using Scratch on the netbooks and then we got to show our creations to our classmates.  It was cool!

Lastly, we have been singing lots this week in preparation for the Stations of the Cross service which will be in school next week.

P3 Weekly Update

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about fractions and have been calculating halves, thirds, quarters and fifths of shapes and numbers.  We know that if we are confident counting in 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s this will help us to calculate fractions of numbers.

Our teachers did some training on something called ‘Reflective Reading’ and they taught us some of the skills that they learned and the skills that we need to make us better readers.  We did things like ‘Blankety Blank’ where we had to work in groups to think of words to make a sentence make sense.  We also did a ‘Picture It’ and had to read a gruesome description of The Bloodbottler from our new novel ‘The BFG’ and we had to draw a picture of him.  Lastly we did a ‘Spot the Silly Word’ where we had to replace a silly word with a sensible word.  We did this through our topic The Ancient Egyptians.  We realised that we already know lots of interesting facts about The River Nile and the pyramids.

Last week we finished our class novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate factory’ and this week we have been enjoying watching snippets of the original movie each day and have been comparing and contrasting the book to the film.  We realised that there are quite a few differences between the two.

We visited the library this afternoon and enjoyed choosing a new book to read.

In our Digital Learning we were using an app called Stickbot Studio and we were creating our very own animation projects.  We realised that we had to move our objects little by little in order for it to look like it was actually moving.  It was great fun doing this and working as a team.

We had a visit from Fr Jeremy and a visiting priest from Nigeria called Fr Francis.  He told us all about Nigeria and he will be helping us when we make our First Reconciliation.

What a busy week!

P3 Weekly Update

This week we have been incredibly busy preparing for our class assembly which is all about friendship and forgiveness.  Our assembly will be tomorrow (Friday 15th February) at 11.15am and families are welcome to come and see it.

As it is Valentine’s Day we learned a little bit about the history behind it.

I learned that it was named after a priest called Valentine who helped soldiers to get married in secret. – James F and Alfie

I learned that Valentine got caught by the Roman Emperor, Claudius and he was put in jail. – Thomas, Toby & Isla

I know that Valentine’s Day is all about love. – James H

I know that some people give cards on Valentine’s Day but it’s not always the same tradition in every country. – Isabella A

In Spelling we have been focusing on the pattern ‘ou’ and we can read it and use it in our writing.

In Literacy we have been continuing to learn about poetry and we worked in groups to write our own rhyming verse to continue the poem ‘Going through the old photos’.  We used some of our own names but we discovered that not all of our names have words that rhyme with them.

In ICT we used Forms on the ipad and netbooks to make our own quizzes on something we knew lots about.

In PE we are continuing with gymnastics and we have been doing different stretches and counter-balancing.  This means that we had to put trust in our partner and work as a team.

We look forward to seeing you at our assembly!

P3’s Weekly Update

Another busy week in P3!  This week we have started to prepare for our class assembly which will be about Friendship and Forgiveness.  This ties in with our Reconciliation preparation.  We have been working hard learning our lines, a song, a prayer and even a rap!  We can’t wait to perform for you all on Friday 15th February.

In Literacy this week, we wrote acrostic poems all about friendship.  These poems didn’t need to rhyme but we had to make sure that each sentence told us something about friendship.

Also, as this week is National Storytelling Week, we had a visit from Mr Menzies who came in to share tales and stories with us.  He was really expressive and funny!

In Numeracy, we have been continuing to learn the 5 and 10 times tables and some of us are getting quicker at recalling these facts without using our fingers.  We are all going to keep practising.

In PE, we are continuing to develop our gymnastic skills and have been practising doing different types of rolls.

In Digital Learning we were learning how to edit a photo and upload it to our class Teams page.  We have also been using a search engine to find the meaning of different scientific words to finish off our topic of freezing and melting.

We look forward to our visit to the library this afternoon and the busy week that lies ahead!

P3 Weekly Update

Wow! What a busy week we’ve had so far.  Let us begin by telling you what we’ve been learning about in Literacy.  As it is Burns Day on Friday we have been looking at Scots language.  We listened to and sang the song ‘Donald where’s yer troosers’, we also sang ‘Heids, shooders, shanks and taes’.  Mrs Dymock read us two different poems called ‘The sair finger’ and ‘Lament to the lost dinner ticket’.  It took us a little while to figure out exactly what they were about.  Some Scottish words we learned were mooth = mouth, taes = toes, lugs = ears, bairn = child and mair = more.  Keeping along our Scottish theme we decided to create our own tartan kilts using 4 colours and different widths of lines.  Here is a photo of some of our creations:

In Numeracy, we have been learning the 5 and 10 times tables.  We have been playing Fizz Buzz, Table Trainer and have been drawing pictures to show what each fact looks like.  We’re trying to get faster at recalling these facts so we’re going to keep on practising.  Here are some photos of us busy learning:

In PE we have been practising gymnastics and have been having competitions where one group is demonstrating different types of jumps and the other group is judging the quality of the jumps.  The judges are looking for well stretched bodies and a good balance.

In Science, we tested different materials to see if they were soluble or insoluble.  We discovered that gravy granules, coffee and salt were all soluble materials whereas paperclips, paper and blu tac are insoluble.

We bet you’re all tired from reading about our busy week and we’ll check in again next week to share more of our learning.

P3’s Weekly Update

This week so far we have been busy bees!

In Literacy, we have started to learn about poetry and we know that not all poems need to rhyme and that they can be split into verses.  They also have patterns and can be read to a rhythm.  We made up actions for a poem and performed to our class.

In Numeracy, we have been looking at number patterns and counting in 5s and 10s from lots of different numbers.  We noticed that when you count up in 10s that the ones column number doesn’t change and that when you are using a 100 hundred square you just need to jump down.  When you count in 5s there is a pattern for example, 1,6,11,16,21 etc.

In Science we have started to learn about Freezing and Melting.  We found out that water freezes when the temperature is 0 degrees or below.  We also learned that water can be solid, liquid and gas.

In RE, we have started to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  We have been learning about Baptism and talking about our Godparents and where we were Baptised.

In PE we have started to do some gymnastics and have been practising different types of jumps like star jumps, stretch jumps and tuck jumps.

Can you believe that we have done all of that work so far and it is only Wednesday?!

Busy Little Elves in P3

Last week in Maths we were learning all about symmetry.  We used mirrors to check if a shape was symmetrical and how many lines of symmetry it had.  We discovered that not all shapes are symmetrical and that is called asymmetric.

In Literacy, we were learning about common and proper nouns.  We learned that a proper noun is a little bit fancy and needs a capital letter.  Words such as months of the year, names, places and days of the week are all proper nouns.

We are starting to feel a little festive, so in Art we were given a challenge by our class elf to create a Christmas tree using forks, paint, glitter and paper plates.

We have also been exercising our vocal chords and have been practising our Christmas carols in preparation for the Christmas carol concert next week.  We have also been pract

ising our dance moves for our Christmas party and have been learning The Square Dance, The Grand Old Duke of York and The Flying Scotsman.

What a busy week we had!

We hope that our class elves leave us some more fun challenges to do this week!

Library adventure

Primary 3 were very lucky to have a visit over to Broxburn library to listen to an Egyptian story read by Dianne the librarian.  However, Dianne was in character when we popped over and was dressed as a pharaoh!  She read us a story about Charlie Stinky Socks who was searching for gold in the desert.  He came across different Egyptian things on his travels.  Dianne let us borrow some books to learn even more about Ancient Egypt.  So far we have learned:

Matthew – Ancient Egyptians used a tool called a shaduf to bring water out from the River Nile.

Niamh/Tavia – Pharaoh is what we call their kings and it means house/palace.

Santiago – The most popular drink in Ancient Egyptian times was beer!

Grady – There are wooden boats called ‘felucca’s’ that travel along the Nile.

Zofia – Only boys who had a lot of money got to go to school.

We have loved learning about Ancient Egypt so far and can’t wait to learn more!

Exciting mail

Primary 3 were intrigued when Mrs McGuire asked if she could have a word with them this afternoon. She had received a letter from the National Museum of Scotland saying that they had had a leak and some of their Egyptian artefacts had been damaged.  They were asking if she knew of any children who would be up to the job in helping them out.

Primary 3 were very excited when they realised that she that thought that they were up to the job and they were happy to accept the challenge!

Primary 3 breathe easy!

As part of our Health and Wellbeing, Primary 3 have been learning about different strategies that we can use to help us deal with our worries.  We were very lucky to have a visit from Ellie’s Auntie Trish who is a mindfulness instructor. She showed us how to breathe properly and gave us a couple of strategies to use when we are feeling particularly worried about something. We know that there are lots of people we can talk to and that a problem shared is a problem halved!

Maths outdoors for Primary 3

Primary 3 were keen to take advantage of the sunny weather and take their maths learning outdoors!  We have been learning to add and subtract 2 digit numbers using different strategies.  These include empty number lines and using the 100 square to find the correct path.  Outside, we were chalking empty number lines on the path, we were making 100 squares and we were using string to make empty number lines for us to jump through.  By doing this, we got some fresh air and sunshine whilst learning! Here are some photographs of us in action.

Super science!

Primary 3 have been enjoying learning about ‘Freezing and Melting’ and the changing state of water. We had a great time trying to find the quickest method to melt an ice cube, although our hands got a bit chilly and wet! We tried blowing on it, rubbing it in our hands and trying to break it up with a pencil.  We found that putting it by the heater and running it under warm water melted the ice cube the fastest. We then used magnifying glasses to look really closely at ice and saw lots of shapes and bubbles inside.

Naughty Rudey!

img_7912Mrs Brown was shocked to discover that she had two very sneaky visitors in her office last night! The two Rudey’s,the P3 elves, took photos sitting at her desk, swinging from her lights and hanging from her door knob! They then put the photos on Mrs Dymock and Miss McKeown’s desktop! They need to learn good behaviour from us as Santa won’t be impressed!

Rudey’s last post of 2015

DSCF0209

Primaries 2 and 2/1 were very excited by Rudey’s message this morning.  He has rewarded us for all of our good behaviour and hard work with a popcorn and movie afternoon.  This will be a lovely way to spend our final day with Rudey!  He has really enjoyed visiting our classrooms this year and will be heading back to The North Pole to make the final preparations for Christmas.  Goodbye Rudey, we will miss you!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Love from Primary 2 and Primary 2/1

Let’s take a selfie!

104_0923

This morning Primaries 2 and 2/1 were confused when they entered their classrooms as there was no sign of Rudey!  They were worried that he had gone back to The North Pole early.  However, Mrs Leonard came in with some interesting news!  She asked us to come down to the photocopying room to investigate.  On the walls were selfies of the two Rudey’s which they had taken using the photocopier over the weekend.  They also left us a note saying they were bored without us.  Mrs Brown also came to investigate and said that we should keep the photographs as evidence of their naughty behaviour to show Santa.

Arran H – I was very shocked when Rudey wasn’t in our classroom.

Finlay F – I was amazed to see that Rudey had used the photocopier.

Matthew M – I was a bit sad to see that Rudey wasn’t there.

Zach – I think that Rudey should go home with us over the weekend to show him how to behave properly.

We hope that Rudey’s behaviour will be better tomorrow!

Rudey strikes again!

DSCF0196104_0917Primaries 2 & 2/1 were very excited to see what antics Rudey had been up to during the night.  They were shocked to find Rudey hanging from our ceiling! He had also sneaked onto our teacher’s computer to type us a letter.  This is what he said:

Dear P2 / P2/1,

I am sad to see that there are no sparkly snowflakes in your classroom.  I thought that you would have enjoyed your treat yesterday!  I am feeling a bit sad and missing home so I need you to make your classroom look more like The North Pole.  I am not moving from here until I start to feel more at home!

Love,

Rudey x

So we have decided to have a busy afternoon making glittery snowflakes, snowmen and robins.  We hope that Rudey will start to feel more at home and will come down soon! DSCF0197

P2 Christmas Crafts

Primaries 2 and 2/1 are delighted to show you what they have been busy making to sell at the Christmas Fair.  We have made Good Luck Calendars which will be £1 and some Snowmen decorations which will cost £2.50.

We have really enjoyed making these!

If you are a parent in P2 or P2/1 and are unable to attend the Christmas Fair, you may send an envelope with money inside clearly stating what you wish to buy before Thursday 3rd December.

Many thanks!

P2 are shape detectives

Primary 2 have been learning all about the features of 2D and 3D shape.  They know how to count the corners (vertices), faces and edges.  The children were shape detectives at home and searched for 3D shapes in their house to make their very own 3D objects.  They used their imagination and created a wonderful selection of objects.  Some of their objects include robots, a house,  a mouse, a church, a skylander, a car  and a doctor’s needle.  The children enjoyed showing their friends their hard work and talking about the shapes that they used.  Here are some photographs to show all of our hard work.

Thank you to all of the mum’s and dad’s for helping the children on their projects!

P2 Nativity Costumes

born in a barn

We are very excited to have started our Nativity preparations.  Please send in the following costumes by Monday 30th November, in a bag clearly labelled with your name:

P2 Boys – Sheep:  White top/t-shirt and black leggings/trousers.

P2 Girls – Pigs:  Pink top/t-shirt and black leggings.

Narrators should wear their full school uniform (white shirt and tie) with an element of tinsel, e.g a hairband, round cuffs or waist.

Thank you.

P2 Class Teachers

Happy Halloween!

Primary 2 are excited for Halloween!  We have come to school in our costumes and are looking forward to lots of Halloween activities in class.  Here are the things we like to do at Halloween:

Finn – I like going trick or treating.

Lucas – I like dooking for apples.

Charlie – I love trying to eat Halloween donuts from a piece of string, it gets my face all messy!

Zach – I love going to Halloween parties.

Mirin – I like to play Halloween games with my brother.

Aaron – I enjoy dressing up!

Happy Halloween everyone!

Autumn Adventure in P2 and P2/1

Primaries 2 and 2/1 went on an autumn walk today.  We used our five senses to look out for the signs of autumn.  We have a new topic called ‘The Hodgeheg’ which will involve learning about the season of autumn.  In Maths we have also been learning about time – looking at the months of the year and sorting these into seasons.  We know that the autumn months are September, October and November. Here are our thoughts on our autumn walk:

I heard a squeaky noise outside and Mrs Gibson thought that it could be a little animal. – Kaylan

I saw some leaves falling from the trees. – Alex

I enjoyed going on the walk as it was nice to get some fresh air. – Justin

I heard a bird tweeting. – Zach

We recorded all of our observations and look forward to writing all about this tomorrow!

Butterfly Adventure

Yesterday Primaries 2 and 2/1 went on their summer outing to Butterfly World in Edinburgh.  We had a great day looking at lots of different butterflies, insects and reptiles.  Some of us were even brave enough to touch and hold a snake, a millipede and a tarantula!  We then went into the nocturnal room and saw scorpions that glow in the dark, and a hedgehog running on a wheel!

Afterwards, we had a picnic outside and ate our lunch, then we played fun games in the park.  Here are some of our best bits…

I liked seeing the caterpillar disguised as bird poo. – Megan S

I thought it was funny to see the hedgehog running on a wheel like a hamster. – Ellie

I enjoyed holding the tarantula, millipede and snake.  The millipede felt tickly. – Marta

I liked seeing the big yellow and white snake.  – Marcel

I enjoyed seeing the glow in the dark scorpions. – Emily

I liked holding the spider on my hand. – Tia

We would also like to thank the kind parents and grandparents who helped us on our trip.

Home is where the habitat is…

Our teachers are so proud of us for all of the hard work and effort that we put into making our Living Things habitats.  We were set a homework challenge to choose a habitat, learn about it and create it using material of our choice.  We  have made a huge variety of wonderful habitats.  These include The Arctic, a beaver’s dam, a hedgehog’s nest, a pond full of frogs, a bird’s nest, an ape house and many more.

We have invited Primary 1 to come and have a look at them and we will tell them how we made them, why we chose to make this habitat and what we have learned.

We really enjoyed the homework challenge because it helped make learning fun!

Emotions

As part of our Health & Wellbeing, Primaries 2 and 2/1 have been getting in touch with their emotions.  We had a chat about all the different emotions that we may experience throughout our lives and had a Circle Time to discuss what might make us feel a certain way.  We realised that our faces can let others know how we are feeling.  We then looked at Edward Munch’s famous painting ‘The Scream’ and decided to recreate our own interpretation using oil pastels.  Our character’s show different emotions using facial expressions.

Butterflies make a bid for freedom!

Today was a mixture of excitement and sadness for Primaries 2 and 2/1.  All 20 of our butterflies successfully emerged from their chrysalis and it was time to set them free.  Miss Toner kindly offered to help us as she didn’t mind holding and touching the butterflies.  Miss Boyd was brave too!  At first, the butterflies were quite timid and needed encouraged to fly away.  Mrs Dymock tried her best to capture them on film as they fluttered into the sky but they were too fast for her to follow them with the camera.

We all agreed that this was an amazing learning experience watching tiny caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies.  We know that it was kind to set them free and allow them to start the life cycle again.

Here are our thoughts:

It was nice to have butterflies in our classroom. – Ethan

I liked learning about the life cycle as it was all new to me. – Lilya

I never knew that caterpillars turned into liquid in their chrysalis and then made a new body. – Milo M

I liked going on the minibeast hunt because we got to find out about other insects and what they looked like.  – Megan S

I enjoyed setting the butterflies free. – Megan H

I learned that a butterfly’s black tongue can curl. – Elijah

I liked being able to look at the caterpillars and butterflies up close. – Ellie

I was surprised to hear that a butterfly’s life only lasts around 2 weeks. – Emily

I learned that butterflies taste with their legs. – Rowen

Bye bye butterflies!

Butterfly news…

Primaries 2 and 2/1 were very excited to see that more butterflies have emerged from their chrysalis.  P2a now have 7 butterflies and P2/1 have 4 so far.  All of P2b’s caterpillars are still inside their chrysalis transforming.  Miss Toner helped us to put some sugary water in a bowl at the bottom of the butterfly garden for the butterflies to drink.  We are also going to put some apple slices in for them to eat too.  The red liquid that you can see inside the net is not blood.  It is extra liquid that the butterfly uses to stretch its wings out.  It’s not very pretty to look at but it is important for the wing formation.

We hope to release the butterflies on Monday!

Sowing sunflower seeds

Yesterday, as part of our science topic ‘Living Things’, Primaries 2 and 2/1 learned about seeds and plants.  We know that plants, fruit and vegetables come from seeds.  We then planted our very own sunflower seeds which we will take home after they have grown a little.

Today in literacy we wrote instructions explaining how we did this and tomorrow we are going to be learning about the different parts of a plant and what they are for.

We know that a plant needs water and sunshine to grow.

We will post some pictures once we start to see some growth.  We hope our green fingers encourage them to grow!

Beautiful Butterfly

Primary 2 have some very exciting news…one of our butterflies has emerged from its chrysalis!

Archie was heading back to his desk to do some maths work when he spotted the wings hanging on the silk paper.  He quickly came to tell Mrs Dymock who didn’t believe him at first as they had looked at the chrysalis’ in the morning and there was no change to them.  The hard work that Primary 2 were doing must have made the butterfly want to come out and investigate!

The wings were closed tightly, however they have started to open now and the red liquid from their wings are on the paper.  This means that its wings are getting stronger.

Primary 1 came over for a visit to meet our new butterfly and to learn lots of new interesting facts.

We know that we need to care for the butterflies before releasing them.  We need to put some sugary water and flowers into the butterfly garden for the butterfly to drink before it is strong enough to set free.

We can’t wait for the rest of them to join us!

Minibeast Hunt

This afternoon Primaries 2 and 2/1 braved the wind and decided to go into the garden to go on a minibeast hunt.  We were very careful not to disturb the insects in their habitat but used a magnifying glass to look very carefully at them.  We found some spiders, slaters, worms and a centipede.  We looked in the soil, grass and under logs and stones.  We recorded our findings on a minibeast checklist.

5 chrysalis hanging in a row…

Primaries 2 and 2/1 would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Toner for helping us transfer our caterpillar chrysalis’ into their new environment.  She had to be very careful when moving them as they are extremely delicate and are in the process of turning into a butterfly.  Although they don’t look like they are doing very much right now, a lot of changes are happening inside the chrysalis.  The caterpillar’s body turns into liquid inside the chrysalis and then a new body forms.  We are excited to see the wings emerge from the chrysalis!

Yesterday, Emily and Ethan brought in a photo album containing photographs of the life cycle of a butterfly that their mum had taken in her own back garden.

We then made mobiles to hang in our classroom showing the life cycle.

We will keep you informed of what happens next!

Deaf Awareness

As Miss Boyd used to work in Donaldsons School for the Deaf, she learned how to sign in order to communicate with the children that she worked with.  As this is Deaf Awarness Week, Miss Boyd spoke to all the children to tell them about what it is like not have the ability to hear properly.  Miss Boyd and her class taught us how to sign the song ‘I can sing a rainbow’.

Primary 2a and 2/1 would like to say thank you to Miss Boyd & P2b.

Cool Caterpillars

Primary 2 and 2/1 are really excited to welcome new guests to their classrooms….caterpillars! As part of our topic ‘Living Things’ we are going to be following the life cycle of a caterpillar as it grows into a beautiful butterfly then we will set it free.  We devised our own questions that we would like to find out about the creatures and hope to be able to answer them by the end of the topic.  We have learned so many facts already!

I learned that caterpillars have holes on their bodies to breathe. – Natalia.

I know that caterpillars have spiky hairs to stop them from being eaten. – Emily

I learned that caterpillars shed their skin. – Megan

I didn’t know that mummy butterflies lay caterpillar eggs. – Nia

I learned that caterpillars go into a J-shaped cocoon. – Archie

I learned that caterpillars have different kinds of legs. – Katie

Easter Egg Bonanza

This morning Primaries 2 and 2/1 went on an Easter Egg Hunt.  They found a coloured envelope in their classroom containing a nursery rhyme clue to solve:

‘Hickory dickory dock, the mouse ran up the _______’ which led them to the next clue which was hidden at the clock!  The hunt took us outside and thankfully we were all confident with our nursery rhymes and were able to solve every clue.

There was a basket filled with yummy creme eggs as a treat for us at the end of the hunt!

Happy Easter everyone!

Measure

Primary 2 have been busy learning about Measure.  We have been measuring items in our classroom using our feet, hands, straws and cubes.  We know that normally our mums and dads would use rulers and measuring tapes to measure things in our house but before we start to learn about that we need to be confident measuring using non-standard units.  We realise that our measurements won’t all be the same when we use our hands and feet because they are all different sizes from each other.  Have a look at us in action!

Our Learning Log

Primaries 2 and 2/1 have had a busy week!  In Maths we have been measuring and have been investigating to find things that are tall and short.  In P2a we discovered that Kordian was the tallest in our class and Chloe was the shortest.  In P2/1 Alan was the tallest and Tatenda was the shortest.  We used cubes which are a non-standard unit of measure to sort characters from Aladdin and measure them.

In Literacy we read a new book called ‘Who’s our new teacher’ and we worked in pairs to make up questions for the big green dragon.  We used the words why, where, how, when and what and had to remember to use a question mark at the end of our sentence.

We have also been building up an interesting story about our magic carpet adventure.  This week we wrote an interesting middle where we met a character in our story.

I met a giant baby in Egypt. – Archie

I met Prince Charming. – Aisha

I met Santa in the North Pole. – Chloe

I met a dancing Daisy in beautiful Field Land. – Natalia

I met a flying unicorn. – Zuzanna.

I met a shark in Australia. – Stephen

We also learned about St Patrick and made brightly coloured rainbow mobiles with a lucky shamrock and pot of gold hanging from them.  We know that St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

Wow! What a busy week we have had.  We are looking forward to learning lots more next week!

Spring has sprung!

Primary 2a were looking at the signs of spring and then wrote an acrostic poem together on our laptop on no pen day!
spring

Spring is the season when baby animals are born.

Prickly hedgehogs come out of their deep sleep.

Rabbit babies are called kittens.

Insects crawl out of their hiding places and butterflies flutter their wings.

Now the weather is starting to get nicer.

Green buds and leaves start to grow on the trees.

By Primary 2a

The dragon has left footprints!

Primary 1 received a letter from a very sad, sad dragon. He needs help! Fairyland is gone and the dragon and his friends have nowhere to live anymore. Jack doesn’t have his beanstalk, Miss Muffet has lost her tuffet and the three bears have lost their cottage! The dragon has asked Primary 1 to help bring back Fairyland…

Today we found dragon footprints in our classroom! They belong to the dragon and his family. We decided to measure these footprints to find out what size the dragon is.

Well done Primary 1. Keep working hard!

Miss Toner

Castles for keeps

castles 3 craws 084 3 craws 085 3 craws 086 3 craws 087 3 craws 088 3 craws 090

Primaries 2 and 2/1 have been learning about Scotland.  We looked at Edinburgh Castle and learned that it was built on top of a dormant volcano.  There is also a canon called Mons Meg that is fired at 1 o’clock every day from the castle.  There is a Great Hall in the castle which was used for dancing and entertaining.  We saw a photo of the crown jewels too.IMG_4777 IMG_4784 IMG_4785 IMG_4788We then learned about the features of a castle.  We know that the keep is the tallest part of the castle so that the guards can keep watch.  We also know that above the main door there is a murder hole where guards would drop things like boiling water to stop enemies from attacking them.  Some castles have a drawbridge that can be opened and closed to stop enemies from entering.  Some castles have a moat which is water surrounding the castle which makes it difficult for enemies to attack.

We used different construction materials including clay, lego, mega blocks and Knex to create our own castles and tried to recreate some of these features.

Super shortbread!

As part of our Scotland topic, primaries 2 and 2/1 over 3 consecutive weeks will have had the opportunity to make and taste some shortbread – a delicious Scottish biscuit!

Mrs Thomson in our school kitchen allowed us to help her make some.  We measured and weighed flour, sugar, margarine and cornflour and then it was mixed into a batter.  Mrs Thomson then rolled the batter and used a fork to pierce a hole design in it before putting it in the oven.

Mrs Thomson brought it along to us once it was fresh out of the oven.  It was still warm and smelled delightful!  We all enjoyed having a little taste!

Twit twoo in Primary 1 & 2

Primaries 1 and 2 have been enjoying reading the story ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’ by Jill Tomlinson.  We have been learning about owls and other nocturnal animals, and have also been looking at day and night.  Yesterday we had a visit from Owl Magic who brought 9 different owls with them for us to look at, learn about and handle.

We learned lots of new things about owls:

I learned that owls eat rats, mice and frogs. – Megan H

We now know that owls have 2 stomachs.  One is for fur and bones and the other is for food to give them energy. – Nia & Milo M.

Owls bring up the fur and bones through their  beak and this is called a pellet. – Lilya & Natan

I learned that some owls have yellow eyes and they are daytime owls, some have orange eyes and they come out at dawn and dusk, and others have black eyes and they come out at night. – Adil

Most of us enjoyed handling the owls and we all had the chance to stroke a Barn Owl called Cuddles.  Mrs Renshaw was so brave as she held an Eagle Owl called Apollo.

Museum of Transport

Primaries 2 and 2/1 concluded their topic by visiting The Riverside Museum of Transport in Glasgow. It was so interesting getting to see all of the different types of transport from the past in real life. We even got to go in some old trams. We saw older cars, trams, a steam engine, horse and cart and we even saw the oldest bike! There was a cobbled street that had lots of shops that would have been around in the past such as a cobblers, saddlery and pawn shop. Our favourite shop was the photography room as we got to try on lots of old fashioned clothes.

My favourite part was when I saw the fire engine. – Rowen

I really enjoyed going into the subway and hearing the loud noises and seeing the rats. – Chloe

We counted 32 cars! – Natan
