P6 EGGSPERIMENT!

IMG_0747Primary 6 have been completing our health and well being topic about nutritional values of our food and drinks. We learned about the sugar in our drinks and were amazed to see the amount in some of our favourite drinks! We created a ‘think before you drink’ display to remind us just how unhealthy these drinks are and to make us think twice about buying them regularly!

This week we completed an experiment with eggs to find out what these drinks can do to our teeth! Mrs Thomson boiled us some eggs and we put them into cola, coffee, tea and water. We left them for 5 days… not only did they smell bad, when we removed them they looked disgusting! The tea, coffee and cola all stained the eggs… the coffee was the worst; it stained the inside of the egg when we cut it open! The egg that we left in water was perfect, it was not stained at all. We got some toothbrushes and and tried to see if any of the staining would come off but it didn’t! The egg soaked in cola was slimy and solid to cut! Yuk!

We also looked at calcium in bones and teeth! We soaked some bones from chicken drumsticks in vingear, the acid made the bones very easy to bend, this showed us the importance of drinking calcium based drinks and food!

Dissolving Experiment

This afternoon P3 conducted an experiment to find out what dissolves in water and what does not dissolve. Dissolving means that when it is mixed with water it disappears.

We got cups of hot water and lots of different things to test. We tested : sugar, coffee, sand, flour, tea, salt, bath salts, gray granules, chalk and bicarbonate of soda.

We predicted whether each item would dissolve or not dissolve by putting our thumbs up or down.

We also gave the water a stir when we put the item into the water. This helped some of them to dissolve.

This is a list of the things that did dissolve: bicarbonate of soda, sugar, salt, coffee, flour, bath salts and gravy.

We found out that the gravy granules only dissolved in boiling water.

This is a list of the things that did not dissolve: tea, sand and chalk.

We also found out that some of the things changed the colour of the water but did not dissolve, like tea.

 

Ice Experiment

Today Primary 3A and B completed an experiment to see how to melt ice the quickest way using our bodies. We made a prediction about how fast we thought we could melt it and the best method of melting it.

We tried to rub it between our hands, left it on the table, crushed the ice in our hands, heat it with our breath and used our sleeve to melt it.

We discovered the best way to melt the ice was to try and heat it with our hands or breath.

In primary 3B the fastest person to melt the ice was Emily in 1 minute 54 seconds. In primary 3A Robbie melted it 1 minute 40 seconds.

We know that when ice melts it turns back into water.

After we melted the ice we all had cold hands and then completed a science report.

Glasgow Science Centre

On Monday 1st June, P4, P5/4 and P5 went to the Science Centre in Glasgow.   When we arrived some of us went to the first floor, some of us went to the second floor and the rest of us went to the top floor.  It was a great trip and we all enjoyed the activities, experiments and science theatre show!  We got the chance to have a browse in the shop and buy souvenirs and had our lunch in the large atrium.

Isobel – I enjoyed the large scale hamster wheel on the third floor and it wasn’t as easy as it looked!

Nicole – I enjoyed when we got the chance  to pump the blood to the heart and it increased the heart beat.

Niamh – I liked watching Francesco and Isla trying to eat the cream crackers quickly.

Ehlana – I learned that the body needs to let gas release or you could explode!

Adrian – I liked the challenge where I had to use the air gun to manouver the beach ball through the hoop.

Alea – When watching the show I learned that the amount of blood your heart beats every day can fill 125 bath tubs!

Alex – I liked looking at the real life tornado that re-formed itself.

Madison – I enjoyed holding onto the high bar and timed how long I could do this for.

Ben – The sprint challenge was great!  I got a best time of 1:63.

Lukas – I liked when I had to spin the wheel, whilst standing on the platform and turn the wheel at the same time.  Astronaut use this in space to control the shuttle.

We would defintiely recommend the trip to another class.  It was a great day out, we learned lots and had fun!  A special thanks to our wonderful parent helpers for keeping us safe.

 

 

 

 

Soluble and Insoluble experiment

Yesterday Primary 4 conducted an experiment to find out what materials are soluble and which are not. Soluble means they will dissolve and disappear into the water. We made a prediction first and then completed the experiment.

Maria-Victoria – soluble things vanish in the water when they are added to it. Salt is soluble.

Karolina – I learned that chalk is insoluble.

Callum – I predicted that sand was insoluble because I know at the beach the sand doesn’t disappear. I was correct.

Piotr – I learned that sugar is soluble.

Ieuan – I learned bicarbonate of soda bubbles and fizzes when you add it to water.

Ethan – instant coffee is soluble and I knew it would be as my mum drinks it at home and it disappears.

Fraser – when you add flour to the water it turned lumpy and looks like slimy cheese. It was insoluble.
