Primary 1a’s ‘Star Pupil of the Week’.

DSCF5439

Well done to Raqab for being P1a’s ‘Star Pupil of the Week’.  I really did have to think for a while this week as all of the boys and girls are working hard, remembering their magic manners and trying really hard to listen to instructions. However , Raqab receives this week’s award for being a super team player. He is always helpful around the class and caught my eye this week as he helped a friend to tidy up. Well done Raqab !

Primary Six are SHAPING up to have a super year!

This week primary 6 have been working on shape in maths! Some of us have been looking at properties of 3D shapes and some have been focussing on how 3D objects can be made up of 2D shapes. We’ve been embracing active maths in the classroom and choosing our own learning tasks to make sure we are all being challenged in the areas we are confident in and supported further in areas we’re not!

Have a look at some of the great things we’ve been getting up to…

Gold, Silver and Bronze for Saint Nicholas in Broxburn Cross Country

On Wednesday the children of primary six took part in a cross country race against Holy Family PS, Uphall PS, Broxburn PS and Kirkhill PS.

We raced around the back of Kirkhill, the track was about 1 kilometre long. First all the girls raced and we were so pleased to see them all trying their hardest and keeping on going! The first girl from our school to cross the finish line was Madison Clarkson, she just missed out on a medal position but finished in the top 10 of around 100 girls in total!  Well done Madison and all the girls who did us proud!

In the boys race Saint Nicholas had a ‘clean sweep’ of the medals winning Gold, Silver and Bronze!!! First to cross the line out of all 100 boys AND taking the gold medal was our very own Logan Beagley, he was closely followed by his brother Michael Beagley in 2nd place and Eoin Sword in 3rd!

image

We are extremely proud of all the children who took part and represented our school in our local community!

Fossils found at St Nicholas!

Primary 1a and 1b have had a couple of very exciting afternoons !  Prof. D. Inosaur left us all a note saying that there were dinosaur fossils buried somewhere in our school ! Well, as you can imagine this caused great excitement amongst the children.  Where could they be ? And what is a fossil ?   Luckily for us, our kind professor told us in his letter all about fossils and he left us clues to find the fossils.

Our clues led us outside.  We found a spade in our playground and started digging.  Just as he had said, we found lots and lots of dinosaur fossils ! These were so cool.  We had a good look at them, guessing the name of each dinosaur from the print on the fossil.  It was great fun.

To help us to develop our understanding more, we then played a matching game.  We had to match the picture of the dinosaur to its fossil.  Thes dinosaur pictures were hidden all around our room, so we had to have a good look for them. We also made a start making our very own dinosaur fossil picture out of cotton buds.  We cannot wait until they are finished.

Well done everyone for working hard  !

Primary 5A Look At The Fashions Of The 1960s

Fantastic creative work today when Primary 5 created their very own 1960s-style fashion logos.  After discussing the role of a Graphic Designer and looking at the Dos and Don’ts of a successful logo, the children used their knowledge of pattern, colour and line to design some superbly eye-catching and effective logos which will advertise their own fashion designs. Well done Primary 5!

We found out that it was over 12 meters tall! We measured this out and decided it was about 12 of us! That’s bigger than the entire classroom!!

We also found out lots of other interesting facts about these huge dinosaurs:

‘They are carnivores’ – Lucas T

‘They are meat eaters’ – Freyja

‘They eat other dinosaurs’ – Oliver

‘They have huge, sharp teeth’ – Gabrielle

DSCF5408 DSCF5405 DSCF5406 DSCF5407Today we learnt another new sound, ‘u’.  We learnt how to write it properly and the sound that it makes in a words.  So far we have all learnt thirteen sounds. Well done to all of the boys and girls for working hard.

We are also working very hard with our numbers.  We worked with number 9 today. We learnt that a cat has nine lives and lots of the boys and girls in P5 will be 9 years old.  We played a guessing game using the numicon and had fun with this too.

Borisaurus has gone home with Luca.  We are looking forward to hearing all about his adventures tomorrow. Pterodactyls were the dinosaur of the day.  We learnt lots of cool facts about these dinosaurs and have started to make them. To finish our day off we danced, sang and exercised to Boogie Beebies.   A great day in all !

See you tomorrow everyone.

Primary 7 Library Visit

Today Primary 7 took a trip to the local library to learn about the history of WW2. During our visit Diane gave us a detailed talk about WW2. We learned lots of interesting information and even got to see and hold a helmet that the soldiers might have worn.

Lewis learned that American solider worn camouflage helmets and the British soldiers had plain green helmets.

Sophie learned lots about children during WW2. Children had to be evacuated to the countryside; Devon and Cornwall were the most common places to be evacuated to. Often it was the children’s teachers who took them to the countryside.

Ryan learned that children who were evacuated only got to take one suitcase, had to wear a placard and carry a gas mask at all times.

Rosie learned that all people in Britain had to carry an identity card so that they could be identified if a bomb dropped.

Lewis B learned that some people had Morrison Shelters in their homes. These looked like a cage and would be used if the family could not get to the Air Raid shelter.

Ellie learned that in London people used Tube Stations as an Air Raid shelter.

Matthew learned that during the Blitz there were wardens that went round the houses to check everyone had their lights outs.

Hannah learned that the British flew large silver balloons shaped like airplanes to distract the German bombers.

Primary 1b Star of the Week

This week, we have all been working so hard, it has been almost impossible to choose a super star to be star of the week.

However, this girl really stood out, for her very hard work, always helping others, and her lovely lovely manners which have been commented on by numerous staff members.

Well done Mia!!!!

Support your child’s Spanish at home

Flagbig

The children in St Nicholas RC continue to work hard on their Spanish. They are very enthusiastic language learners and they enjoy singing and playing in Spanish every week. Some of the topics we have been covering are Greetings, Colours, Animals and giving personal information about ourselves.

We are also trying very hard to incorporate Spanish into our classroom routines. If you are interested in supporting your child’s Spanish at home, here are some useful websites and apps!

What have we been up to???

Article 28

We have a right to an education

Today, P5 have been revisiting the spelling rules that have been taught over the last couple of weeks.  We tried to make words with the suffix -ing or -ed on the end or plural words in lots of different ways, including blind spelling, dot words, word searches, playdough, squiggle spelling and writing the words in silly sentences.

We have also been looking at other patterns – in Maths. We became spies and tried to crack a secret code! It was really complicated and took a few of us a while to work it out. Tommorow we have big maths that challenges to conquer before watching a theatre production of Matilda by Roald Dahl. Busy, busy busy…

Lost Property in Primary 1b

Hi everyone,

We are working hard to ensure we always hang our coats up on our pegs, and keep other items of clothing on our chairs when we are not using them, however it appears that some have grown legs.  Over the last few days we have misplaced ties, cardigans and jackets.

Please could I ask you all to check your childs belongings to ensure that they do not have another name in them?

Thank you in advance,

Mrs Baty

P1b are Fantastic Friends!

We have had such a busy day today! We have been learning about what makes a good friend in primary 1b.

Safaa – ‘We have to play nicely’

Mya – ‘A good friend is nice to others’

Mia – ‘Friends are kind’

Freyja – ‘We have to share’

We listened to The Rainbow Fish story, and we were able to discuss why he didn’t have any friends at the beginning of the story, and how he made friends at the end.

We then sat next to our friends on the carpet. See how happy we are when we are with our friends?

After this, we made friendship certificates to give to our best friend in the class.

We also used our finger prints to make a class friendship tree, which Mrs Baty is going to display in the class. It looks very pretty and colourful.

Groovy Grandparents- Learning about life in the 1970s

Primaries 2 and 2/1 were very lucky today! Mrs Hesketh was born in 1970. She brought in a record player and all her favourite records from when she was a little girl. We learned lots of new facts about our topic.

Mirin- You have to hold the records really carefully or they will get scratched. If they get scratched, they jump all over the place and we can’t hear them properly.

Aoibhe- We learned that it’s not just music. We can listen to stories too. Mrs Hesketh brought in the Peter Pan story for us to listen to.

Matthew, Christy- We listened to the Carpenters.

Adam- When Mrs Hesketh set the record player to 78, it was really funny. The voices were very fast and squeaky.

Cerys and Mrs Hesketh both brought in a disco ball! We decided to put out the lights, switched these on and dance to the records. We tried to dance like they did in the 1970s, with lots of special moves!

Breaking News in P1a !

We had a huge surprise today after lunch to see that our dinosaur egg had hatched open  to reveal a baby dinosuar !  This caused great excitement. After a dicussion about a name, we decided to vote for the best suggestions. Our baby dino will be called ‘Georgeosaurus’. This was Tavia’s great idea !

To celebrate this special day we watched a cartoon about dinosaurs and learnt lots of amazing facts.  We spent the afternoon doing all things dinosaur.  What did we do ?

We played with the dinosur small world.

We used playdough to add features to our dinosaur play mats.

We used our fine motor skills to follow the lines and do super colouring in of dinosaurs.

We told Mrs Macdonald a dinosaur fact that we learnt today.  She wrote down what we said.

To finish off our dinosaur afternoon, Leon was given our friendly class dinosaur, ‘Borisaurus’ for a sleepover.  We hope that he behaves for you Leon !

Dinosaurs loose in the school!!!

Primary 1 have some very exciting news!!!

Today, after lunch, our dinosaur eggs hatched! Inside, we found a baby T-Rex. They were a bit naughty, with one even walking through dirt and leaving muddy footprints all over the classroom!

However they are learning quickly, and primary 1b’s dinosaur (named Rory) has even been brave enough to go on a sleepover! (With his special blanket).

We hope he has a lovely time and we are all looking forward to our turn to take him home.

Mrs BatyRorys First Trip Home

Fantastic Kyle !

DSCF5355 DSCF5356

Here is Kyle proudly showing off his certificate and number from ‘Pedal Scotland’.  Kyle , along with his mummy, daddy and big sister cycled all the way from Kirkliston to Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh yesterday !   What a super achievement !

Kyle did this for charity.  We are all very impressed and proud of you for doing this.  You have inspired Mrs Macdonald and your friends in P1a to also do something nice for charity.  Watch this space.

Perfect Popping in Primary 6!

Last week we were practicing using ‘an’ and ‘a’ in sentences based on words with vowel sounds. Some of it was quite tricky because we thought it only mattered if the next word began with a,e,i,o or u, but ACTUALLY be discovered that words with any vowel sound would have ‘an’ for example….

‘An honest man’ would have an instead of a because the h is silent and the word starts with a ‘o’ sound!

Once we finally got to the bottom of it we worked in teams to complete a quick assessment of what we had learned. We worked in 2 teams in a race against time! We had to read a sentence with ‘a’ or ‘an’ missing then put it into the correct category… sounds easy? Well the trick was the sentences were inside balloons! We had to pop the balloon first! As soon as Miss Miller and Miss King said ‘Go!’ the classroom turned into a frenzy of cheering and excitement! At the end we made sure everyone had placed their sentence in the correct category and it showed us that most people had really grasped using a and an properly! We are looking forward to using this game to assess our learning in other areas soon!

Praying beautifully in P1.

We have been learning how to say the prayers that we say at St Nicholas .  We are especially good at saying our morning prayer and are getting really good at making the Sign of the Cross.

All of the boys and girls from P1a and P1b got together this week to make a school prayer.  We made our prayer to Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of our school.  We hope that you like it .

Prayer to Saint Nicholas.
Dear Saint Nicholas,
Thank you for our caring teachers,
and our lovely school.
Thank you for the food we eat,
our tummies are always full.

Help us to be kind each day,
and guide when us when we work and play.
St Nicholas hear our prayer,
please keep us in your care.

AMEN

Here we are thinking about our prayer.

Fantastic River Nile Art work

Primary 3 have been learning all about the River Nile and why it was important for the Ancient Egyptians. Look at our fabulous collages. We used lots of different materials to create our collages.

Did you know that:

The River Nile floods every year and leaves black fertile soil so that crops can be grown. Freya

The River Nile helps the plants to grow and makes food for the people of Egypt. Maya

Flacks was grown at the side of the River Nile and they use it to make clothes. Katie

They used the water from the River Nile to drink. Robbie

They travelled up and down the River Nile to trade with other people. Emily

Papyrus was grown at the River Nile to make paper. Clara

They also used the papyrus to make boats. Harris

They used the mud from the River Nile to make bricks for houses. Millie

The River Nile gives animals food, water and somewhere to live. Grace

Fish live in the River Nile and the Egyptians could fish for food. Molly

They could use the water to cool down and wash in. Amie-Lee

Learning at the Library!

On Wednesday afternoon, all the Primary 4 children visited Broxburn Library.  We listened carefully to Diane sharing information about the Vikings.

Patryk – I found out some Viking names and the houses would have been dark because there were no windows.

Nia – I learned that children could get married as young as 12.

Cameron H – Viking houses had one large hole in the roof that allowed the smoke from the fire to escape.  They did not have any windows so the Vikings would have been hot in the warm months.

Lewis – Vikings did not have Sir names.

Elise D – The boats they travelled in were called long boats.

Adrian – The Vikings wore plain clothes.

Alanna – Some Viking men dyed their hair blond.

Anya – Vikings dyed their clothes using dye from plants.

Christy- They live in South America.

Lucas- I reminded Mrs Dymock that the Anaconda swallows its feast whole.

Bella-Rose- It can grow as long as a school bus!

Harry- I’ve held an Anaconda round my neck when I was on holiday in Spain.

We decided to create our own Anacondas! We used different materials including coloured paper, cardboard, crayons, pencils, glue, glitter and scissors.

We have displayed our artwork on our classroom doors, ENTER IF YOU DARE!

Primary 1 had a special delivery

Today, both primary 1a and 1b came back in our classroom after lunch to find we’d been left a very big box and a letter.

A paleontologist (a dinosaur scientist) has sent us both a real life dinosaur egg! They are HUGE!! He wants us to look after them as he’s very busy at the museum at the moment.

We learned that eggs need to be kept warm, so we’re keeping them in a nest of straw. We don’t know if it is going to hatch or not, but we are going to learn all about dinosaurs, just in case it does, so we know what to feed it and how to look after it. We’ll keep you updated.

We have begun to use these sounds to help us read words, and we even began making our own as well!

We would love to show you at home how we read, by saying the sounds and ‘swishing’ them together quickly, and how we have built our own words by saying the word reallllllly slllllowlllly, to help us hear the sounds we need to use.

Here are some photos of us working so hard. Look how proud we are!

P1b Star of the Week

Primary 1b have had a fantastic week at school. We have all worked super hard and have settled in very well.

Choosing our first pupil for our star of the week award was incredibly hard, however I’d like to say a great big well done to Catherine, who earned this award for being a super listening, an amazingly hard worker and for helping others in the class.

I wonder who it will be next week?

Our Teachers think we are going to be fantastic workers in Primary 3 and we will earn lots of Dojo points!!

Well done to Cole for receiving these medals from Broxburn Athletic Colts for taking part in a recent tournament and also taking part in a Soccer 7s competition. Well done Cole!

I Can Do Anything

Primary 7 have been learning all about the world of employment through their ‘I Can Do Anything’ conference which took place this week.  The were joined by an array of different people such as Financial Managers, architects, dance teachers, firemen, train driver, nurse, estate agents, printers, bakers, beauty therapists, librarian, sports development officers, nursery managers and speech and language therapists.  The children had the opportunity to go around and spend 4 minutes with each role model and ask them questions about their job.  This gave them an insight into the different qualifications, training, job description, hours and, of course the most vital question – pay!  A lot was learned and we would like to say a very big thank you to all those who gave up their valuable time to share this information with us in the safe environment of school.

Wonka Opens his Gates

Primary 6 opened their doors this afternoon to share their learning with parents, grandparents, aunties and friends.  They were all very enthusiastic and throroughly enjoyed telling everyone about the links they have made with so many different curricular areas through the Storyline of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We have looked at characterisation in-depth, gone through the process of designing and carrying out the classroom transformation, found out about the journey of chocolate and how important Fairtrade is to those involved in the cocoa bean trade, invented our own sweets, created some fantastic acrostic poems and learned to illustrate in the style of Quentin Blake.   It has been a great topic and this is just the tip of the iceberg – there has been a lot more learning involved.

Well done Maisie!

Maisie in P2/1 was awarded with a super certificate for performing with the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy last weekend. She was one of the children in the famous story ‘The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe’

Maisie had lots of fun acting when she had to be cheeky to the old woman and the housekeeper.

Well done Maisie, we are all very proud of you! IMG_3408

Fun in the sun for primary 3’s school trip!

P3 had an amazing day last week when we went on our school trip!  As we have been learning about different cultures and food from around the world, as well as keeping our bodies healthy, we visited some local restaurants to sample some different foods and learn about how to make our own meals! We had great fun and would like to thank the Harvester Grill and Pizza Express at Livingston Centre for letting us visit! I’m sure we’ll all be back soon!

When our visits were over we got back on the bus and traveled to our local park Stewartfield where we enjoyed a picnic in the glorious sunshine! We played rounders and races and then enjoyed an afternoon walk back to school!

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Nia’s mum, Ruby’s mum, Hollie C’s mum, Owen’s mum, Esme’s dad and Kieron’s granny for joining us on our trip! We hope you had as much fun as all of us!

Measure

This week primary 4 have been learning about length. We have measured lots of things including: shoes, jumpers, pencils, rubbers, doors, jotters, length of the classroom and area.

We know that you can use the units of measure millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. We know that millimetres are the smallest unit of measure are kilometres are the biggest unit of measure.

Look at us measuring some things.

We know that
– 100 centimetres are in a metre
– 10 millimetres are in a centimetre

FANTASTIC FRACTIONS!

Primary 3 completed lots of work recently on fractions. To show our understanding of all that we learned we completed Miss King’s ‘PIZZA CHALLENGE’ we had to work n pairs to create our very own pizza but it had to meet a very specific criteria! Each quarter had to be different and we could only use a certain number of toppings! It was great fun! Then on Thursday we made our pizzas then waited a whole 24 hours… On Friday morning Mrs Thomson form the kitchen put our pizzas in the oven and by playtime our pizzeria was in full swing! We all ate our creations and listened to Italian music.

Beat the Expert

Each week we evaluate our learning – this week we decided to try and beat the expert.  One of us sat on the chair at the front of the class, put on the special hat and shared our knowledge and understanding of a subject/topic given by our teacher – we had one minute to do it!!  Our classmates then got the chance to quiz us further to confirm what we knew.  It’s a great way to reflect on what we have learned and make connections with different curriculum areas and the everyday life.

This week Klaudia was the expert on the life cycle, Lukazs – making leaflets and Oliver shared all his knowledge of acrostic poetry.

Very clever guys we have in our class!

It’s the Cycle of Life

Primary 6 ventured out of the classroom to pay a visit to the zoo in order to learn all about the life cycle.  We had a great day and found out all about the male monkey’s blue bottom, the amazing way a panda can stop a pregnancy and got to see lots of little baby penguins being looked after by their parents.  It was a great day and fabulous learning experience.

“I think the penguins are cheeky because they steal each other’s pebbles for their nest”.

” The apes are really clever being able to swing from branch to branch without falling very often.  It’s cool how they change colour when they grow up to make it easier to tell males from females”.

“The panda’s poo was yellow and he did over 40 of them a day!”
