The council have uploaded their latest Winter Ready information to our school website, under the Parent Zone: https://stnicholasprimary.westlothian.org.uk/article/5923/Winter-Ready-for-Schools
Winter Ready 2018:
In the event of closures schools will contact parents/carers in the normal way via Groupcall. Parents/carers should ensure that their school/nursery has up to date contact information.
In addition changes will be notified via the School Closures page, Facebook, Twitter and local media.
The Head Teacher has responsibility for undertaking a risk assessment in the event of severe weather or building difficulties. There are several factors which may impact on this decision including:
The Head Teacher takes the decision to close a school to pupils in consultation with a member of the senior management team in Education Services.
In extreme weather conditions such as snow, parents/carers should carry out a risk assessment as to whether they consider it safe for their child to travel or walk to school. Parents/carers should then inform the school of their decision at the earliest opportunity.
During adverse weather conditions school transport operators have been instructed that if a child is picked up on route and news reaches the driver that the school is closed, the driver will proceed to the school with the child as planned.
Under no circumstances will the driver return to the pick up point until such time as the parents have been informed of the situation.
It is vitally important that parents are aware that transport may not operate at all in adverse weather conditions and parents must have a contingency plan should the bus not arrive at the pick up point. Please ensure that your child/children are aware of these guidelines and what to do if the bus does not arrive for any reason as normal.
If you have any queries about the school transport procedure please contact Public Transport either by telephone: 01506 280000 or email: customer.service@westlothian.gov.uk.
All West Lothian pupils have access to the education community GLOW. Pupils who can access a computer at home, at libraries or Community Centres, can access study material via GLOW. The private website has study material and activities.
West Lothian Council GLOW allows teachers and pupils to communicate over the internet in a safe and secure way. Teachers can post work and lessons for pupils. Pupils can submit completed work. Features include safe and secure ‘chat rooms’ where teachers can answer pupil questions, and where pupils can help each other out and share learning experiences.
A number of schools across Lothian have reported an increase in pupils with vomiting and/or diarrhoea. The symptoms are suggestive of viral gastroenteritis (also known as norovirus or winter vomiting disease) which is known to be currently circulating in the community. It is usually a short lived self-limiting illness from which children and adults recover quickly.
Further information about norovirus and its prevention can be found on the NHS Inform Norovirus Information Webpage
To minimise the likelihood of developing norovirus we recommend:
At St Nicholas nursery class we value your opinion and appreciate any feedback you give us. We appreciate that not all parents get a chance to come into the nursery so this gives you an opportunity to express your ideas and opinions. Please take a few minutes to answer the following questions.
Please go to bit.ly/stnicsnurserydec18 to answer the questionnaire.
Thank you.

We are very excited about it. Please head on over and have a look.
Primary 1 have been having a great Book Week so far.
We have been reading lots of books in class, with our teacher, with our friends, with nursery children and with our primary 7 buddies. We also took some of our favourite books outside to read in the sunshine today.
We’ve had lots of fun book related activities, including painting and other art activities related to some of our favourite stories.
We have been decorating our door like a book too – we are trying to win a ‘Dress Your Door’ competition against the rest of the school (of course, ours are by far the best!).
We helped write the first chapter of a ‘School Story’ – the rest of the school will continue and finish the story.
We have also been doing lots of fab writing related to and inspired by some of our favourite books.
We’ve also been bringing in some fab photos of our ‘extreme reading’ for the competition – the winner will be announced on Friday.
There’s still lots more to come, including a school carousel (where we will hear some stories from other teachers in the school, and finally, we are really looking forward to dressing up as our favourite book character on Friday.

Edinburgh Castle is on top of an extinct volcano- Matthew
The volcano doesn’t have any red in it – Hugh John
It doesn’t have any lava – Daniella

This week we have written some amazing descriptions of our Hamish McHaggis (who is helping us to find out more about Scotland). We all remembered to use capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, and we are even learning to use adjectives to describe something (ie he has a shiny red nose).
***
Today we were learning all about Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We learned that he lived in Glasgow, and he was an artist. We made our own pictures based on his. We decided that for it to be similar, we had to have a pink flower, some stripes, and some small squares.
Don’t they look amazing?
***
Also today, we had a very special visitor, who came to sing some songs with us. She brought lots of fun props to help us with some of the songs!
I’m sure the children will all be exhausted after such a busy week!!
Today in Primary 1, we had great fun learning all about Robert Burns. We learned that he was a super clever man, who lived in Scotland. We learned that he wrote lots and lots of poems. We listened to some of his poems. We also learned about the traditional Burns Supper, which includes Haggis, Neeps and Tatties.
We listened to some Scottish songs (and learned about bagpipes). We then learned to sing some Scottish songs, including Donald Where’s Yer Troosers?’, ‘Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny Aff The Bus’ and ‘Ali Bali Bee’.
We then learned some Scottish words:
Troosers – James H
Wheisht – Roman
Braw – Andrew
Ston up – Max & Megan
Doon – Lucia & Julia D
Aye – Joshua
Heid – Justyna
Lugs – Toby
We then had our own Burns Supper. We had some oatcakes and cheese and some shortbread.
We then went to the hall to practice some Scottish dancing.
Here are some of the things we have learned:
‘Today is Robert Burns Day’ – Toby
Robert Burns wrote hundreds of poems – Olivia
Robert Burns was very very special – Matthew P
It is Robert Burns’ birthday today – Daniella and Sophia
It is Robert Burns day on 25th January – Piper
Robert Burns wrote lots of letters – Lucas
Hope you enjoy the rest of your Burns Day!
Primary 1 had such a great time at their Christmas Party yesterday!
We all looked amazing in our lovely (and very sparkly) party clothes (so thank you to all the mummies / daddies / grandparents).
We played lots of games, including corners, musical bumps and pass the parcel. We then had a dancing competition too (all the boys and girls were really enjoying it and showing off lots of amazing moves!). We had a rest and a chance to refuel with some party food (with crackers too – the children really enjoyed all the jokes). Then, we had a special visit from Santa! Overall, it was a really fantastic day (and I expect we were all exhausted last night).
Here are all our prize winners! Well done to everyone, you were all amazing!
Yesterday, Primary 1 had a great time at their Christmas Craft afternoon.
The parents were all invited in to make some Christmas crafts, listen to some Christmas music, have a little drink and biscuit, and get into the Christmas spirit!
The children made lots of fantastic things, including Rudolph baubles, reindeer handprints, glittery stockings, paper chain Christmas trees and Christmas Wreaths.
Thank you to all the parents who managed to come along!
The whole school is buzzing in the lead up to Christmas. The trees are up, classrooms are decorated, and there’s lots of elves keeping an eye on the classrooms!
We have a few more exciting things planned before the holidays though!
Friday 9th December – Dress Down Day
The children are invited to come to school dressed in their home clothes (or Christmas clothes if they like). Please can each child bring £1 if they are dressing down?
Wednesday 14th December – Christmas Jumper Day
This year the school is joining in with the national event, raising money for Save The Children. The children (and staff) are invited to wear a Christmas jumper on this day. If you don’t have one, don’t worry! You can just jazz up a normal jumper with tinsel, or safety pin baubles on. There are lots of ideas online. Please can each child donate £1 on this day if they are dressing up. It is for such a great cause. If you would like to read more about it, please go to www.christmasjumperday.org.
Thank you for your support!
St Nicholas are very excited for their super busy week next week for the opening of the new hall and our Jubilee concert.
Today we had some rehearsals, and everyone sounds amazing!
If possible, please could everyone have a last practice of their song (they know what they are doing) and the Welcome Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Waxw4GB5K38) , over the weekend.
Also, just a reminder that we would please like all children to come to school wearing a white shirt and their school tie on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week.
Thank you in advance, and hope you have a lovely weekend.
Today, Primary 1 had such an exciting afternoon with some very special visitors. As part of our light and dark topic, we have been learning about nocturnal animals. So today, we were visited by 6 owls!
They were so cute! We had:
Chili – Chili is a spectacled owl from the South American jungle. She is 6 years old, and prefers warm weather. Today, she was making lots of ‘hissing’ noises, that reminded Mrs Baty of her cats when they fight. She also kept turning around to face away from us. I think she maybe didn’t like being woken up during the day.
Cuddles – Cuddles is a barn owl, and is also 6 years old. She is mainly white, with light brown feathers too. She was very calm and friendly, although also kept trying to fly away (it’s okay – she had her lead on, so she couldn’t go far!).
Otis – Otis is a grey, long eared own. Although we did learn yesterday that owls ears are hidden. We asked about this – Otis is called a long eared owl, but actually it’s not his ears that are sticking up, just feathers. The ears are actually hidden underneath, just as we thought.
Poppy – Poppy is a small, brown, tropical screech owl. She made some little squeaks whilst we were holding her, but not loud at all. She is also from South America, and is 4 years old. We was very good when we were holding her, and loved strokes on her head. She looked like she was going to sleep! Mrs Baty thought she looked a little bit like a pom pom.
Bell – Bell is a tengmals owl. She is also very small. She didn’t really want her photo taken, she kept looking away. She was showing off, by showing us how far around she could turn her head. She is originally from Scandinavia, so doesn’t mind the cold weather.
Daisy – Daisy is a white faced owl. She also has feathers that look like ears. She is originally from South Africa, and is about 6 years old. She was showing off for us by doing a little dance whilst we were having a chat. We were able to hold her too, although she kept fidgeting and flapping her wings.
We also found out lots more facts about owls. We have been learning that owls are nocturnal animals (meaning they come out at night) but actually we found this is isn’t quite right.
If an owl has dark coloured eyes, they come out at night.
If it has yellow eyes, it comes out during the day.
If it has orange eyes, it comes out at sunrise or sunset.
We also learned that they sleep up to 20 hours a day!
We then asked some fantastic questions:
Lennox – How long are their wings?
A – all owls have very big wings for their size
Matthew – do they fly fast or slow?
A – they actually fly quite slowly for birds. They only get to about 30mph.
Dermott – why are they tied onto logs?
A – they have to be tied up, the same way a dog has a lead when it goes out – so that it doesn’t fly off and hurt itself. The log is so it’s got something comfortable to sit on.
Lucas – can they fly really high in the sky?
A – they actually stay very low so they can find food. They don’t go higher than the trees.
Overall, we had a fantastic afternoon!!!
Today P1 were very lucky to have a special visitor. We were visited by 2 policemen (PC Robertson and PC Hart)!!
We were very excited (and on our best behaviour).
Who helps us?
Alfie – policeman
Matthew – fireman
Ava – lollypop man (he has an orange jacket and a hat and a stick)
Haziq – shopkeepers
Louvisa – they wear a uniform
James – and a badge
Joshua – high service (customer service)
Piper – teachers
We learned a lot about Stranger Danger – we know that we don’t speak to people we don’t know!
We had some questions we were bursting to ask. Lots of these were about the uniform they were wearing. We wanted to know why it was bright yellow, what the pen was for, and what the handcuffs looked like . The policeman even arrested the teddybear!
We also asked:
Olivia – How do you catch bad guys? (we are really fast, and some people tell us where the bad guys are?)
Joshua – where do you do? (we take the bad guys to the police station)
Arran – is the car bumpy or not bumpy? (it can get bumpy when we drive fast)
Roman – do you only catch bad guys? (we only catch bad guys, but we speak to good and bad people)
James – do you drive really fast? (only in an emergency)
Tyler – why do you have a police hat? (so everyone knows we are policemen)
Kayleigh – why do you have handcuffs? (in case the bad guys run away)
Lucas – do you have a police ambulance? (no, but we do have a police van)
Leo – why do you have a radio? (so that in an emergency we can speak to each other when we’re far away)
Joshua – why do you have a flashlight? (so we can see in the dark, because we work at nighttime too, to keep you safe).
We then all had a chance to wear the policemans hat! (including the bear).
We then got a chance to see the police van! We were so excited!
We had such a fun day!
(photos will be posted later!)
This week we have been learning all about Rabbits. We were so busy this week that we learned these fun facts today (Friday) instead of Thursday!
We really enjoyed hearing stories and learning about different types of rabbits. Here are some of the things we learned:

Emma – some rabbits stay in a house
Daniel (P1b) – some rabbits live in huts
Joshua – some rabbit ears stick up and some are down
Matthew (P1a) – floppy ears are called lop ears
Oona – some wild rabbits are brown
Today in Primary 1, we have been learning all about our school’s saint: St Nicholas.
Here are some of the things we have learned:
Louvisa – he rescued someone
Thomas – he rescued them from a storm
Chloe – he made people rich (he was generous)
Leo – he shared his money
Roman – he left a bag of money for a man
Matthew (P1b) – the man found the money
Lucas (P1a) – he wants to give money
All – he was happy
Toby – he wanted to be a bishop
All – A bishop is like a priest
Today, P1 all got together to learn some fantastic facts. Today we were learning about Spiders!
We began by reading two different stories. One was a fiction book. This means it is not real (Andrew).
The other was a non-fiction book. This means it is real (Joshua).
We learned lots of facts about spiders:
Kayleidh – they have 8 eyes
Isabella P – they have 8 legs
Matthew P – they have spinnerettes
Matthew R – these make webs
Today, primary 1 were lucky enough to have some very special visitors! As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we invited some paramedics to come to see the children. They told us all about their job, what they do and what equipment they use.
Some of us were allowed to dress up in their real High Vis Jacket, and their paramedics helmet. Then, we pretended Mrs Evans had been trampled by an elephant!! The paramedics put a bandage on her head (like a big plaster) and used a special machine to make sure she was feeling okay (it beeped, and had a blue wavy line on it).
Then, we went to see the ambulance!!! It was amazing! We even got to go inside! Then they put the siren on for us to hear! (See our picture with our hands over our ears … it was so loud!).
We had a really great day!!
Joshua – Paramedics have ambulances
Alfie – they wear an ambulance suit
Ava – they have a torch
Kayleidh – (how could they make sure they are seen?) you wear a jacket
Isla – (Mrs Evans should..) get away from the elephant!
Lucas – (Mrs Evans is hurt, what do we do?) phone the doctor!
James – is the number 909?
Ben – the ambulance is blue
Lucas – …and green and yellow
Matthew – the ambulance has lights
Olivia – the lights are blue, and they flash
Matthew – it has a siren, and they rescue people
Toby – they help people who get hit by a car
Ben – they are sometimes with the fire brigade
Arran – they take you to the hospital
Dermott – St Johns hospital.
Today, Primary 1 were learning all about The Police, as part of our People Who Help Us topic.
We began by watching a video about police in action, then we had lots of fun activities. We got to play dress up (as police and firefighters), and we even took our own finger prints!
Here are some of the things we learned today:
Ben – the police use helicopters
Toby – They catch bad guys
Olivia – They drive police cars
Lennox – They go fast on their motorbikes to get badies
Dermott – They have sirens on the top of bikes and cars
Ava – They have handcuffs
Arran – They go on motorbikes

Ava – Everyone has different lines on our fingers
Tyler – … called their fingerpints
We have been having so much fun and we’ve been working very hard in Primary 1a! Mrs Baty is very proud of us!!
—
We have been learning all about pattern. We know that pattern means ‘it is repeated’. We have been making patterns with colour using counters / cubes, and we have begun making patterns with shapes. We also made a pattern using ourselves!!! (sitting and standing).
—
Today we read the story of Elmer the Elephant. Elmer was sad because he was different from all the other elephants. He painted himself grey, but quickly realised that by embracing his unique personality and his colours, he was happier and he made everyone else happier. We then spoke about what makes us all special and unique.
We had some brilliant answers:
Joshua – I was really good at football when I was wee
Olivia- I am very good at swimming and gymnastics
Ben – When I was younger I went to football and I was really good
Toby – when I am a grown up I am going to be a really good fireman
Rian – I am really good at football
Roman – I am really good at football and I can go under the water
Daniel – I am really good at football
Leo – I’ve played in lots of football games
Tyler – I am good at swimming underneath the water
Matthew – I am really good at football

We then decorated our own Elmer in our own unique way. We were excited to add glitter to make them super special.
—
Last week we made our beautiful Rainbow Fish, whilst learning about how to be kind to each other by sharing. Our Rainbow Fish look ‘amazing’, ‘fantastic’ and ‘beautiful’ on our wall.
—
We have also been learning to draw a self portrait. Don’t they look fantastic?
Primary 1a have had another exciting day at school today.
This morning we had fun doing lots of different activities to build our fine motor skills. We drew spikes on crocodiles, we playing with jumping frogs, we made necklaces, we played with laces, and we played / danced with some playdoh to the Doh Disco (so much fun!).
After playtime (where we got to see our buddies again), we listened to the story The Rainbow Fish. We had a chat about the importance of sharing, and discussed the ways each of us have shared things with others. We then had to share the glue, scissors, and coloured paper, to make our very own Rainbow Fish. They look beautiful!
We had a fantastic morning in Primary 1a, we had so much fun and made lots new friends.
We showed Mrs Baty how clever we were by doing fantastic listening, sitting and by putting up our hands to talk.
We played some circle time games to get to know our classmates, and found out all of our favourite animals. We all seem to like cats, dogs, lions and penguins amongst others.
We had a story after break time and met our story animals. They help us to listen nicely to the stories, and sometimes ask questions too.
We even got to use some paint to make a friendship tree for our classroom (photo to follow).
Have a look below at our super smart First Day Photos. Don’t we look super?!
Keep checking back to see what else we get up to in our first week of Primary 1.
Primary 1a and 1b had a fantastic afternoon of Karate. Some of us have already experienced Taikwondo or Karate before, and we were keen to show off our skills.
We found out that Karate is a Japanese sport.
We began by learning how to say hello in Japanese. They are very formal. To say hello, they bow, with their hands at their sides and their feet together. The more important the person, the lower we bow. So of course, we all bowed very low to our teachers!
We then learned how to count to 5 in Japanese.
1 – ish
2 – ni
3 – san
4 – chi
5 – go
We then learned different ways to punch and kick correctly, so as not to hurt ourselves. (Of course, we learned that this is just a sport, and only to be done in safe environments, such as in karate or taikwondo classes).
We learned a forward punch – it is important to keep our thumb tucked away, punch in a straight line, and use the top part of our first 2 fingers.
We learned to a head block and a side block (to stop others punching us).
We then learned something called a slap kick – we don’t use the bottom of our foot or our toes, as this would hurt. Instead, we use the top part of our foot.
We practiced all of these on punching pads, held only by the instructors. We then got a go at using the pretend man called Bob. This was fun as he was very squishy and wobbled a lot.
We also had lots of fun playing games. These games were to help us get fit, and to exercise our muscles. We played an opposites game. We found this tricky at first but eventually got the hang of it. If the man said sit, we had to stand. If he said fight, we had to dance.
We then played a dice game. The dice had different exercises on it, including crunches, push ups, star jumps and squats. There was even a side which got the teachers to do 25 exercises! Luckily it only landed on this once. It was very funny watching Mrs Baty trying to do 25 push ups! She’s not as fit as us.
We had a really fun day, and we’re looking forward to the rest of the week.
Primary 1 continued their Fitness Fortnight today by playing on a bouncy obstacle course. It was great fun, and very tiring! This means we were doing great exercise. We all felt very hot, sweaty and our hearts were beating fast. Primary 2 and 3 even got to have a go as well. Look at our photos. We all have huge smiles!
Just a little reminder about the Bouncy Castle Obstacle Course tomorrow (Friday 10th June).
If you would like a go and are in primary 2 and primary 3, please bring in your £1 coin in tomorrow morning. Your class teacher will take you along.
(Primary 1, we have already paid, so just bring your smiles and bouncing legs).
We hope you all have a brilliant time!
P1 are having a brilliant week as part of our Fitness Fortnight. We are definitely feeling very fit …. and very tired!
Today we did our daily mile again. It is 6 times around the field. We have been walking most of the way, then running the last 2 laps, although some of us are pushing ourselves further to run more. We are noticing the differences now that we’ve been doing it more continuously.
This afternoon P1a had a yoga instructor come into the class. We had lots of fun trying to get ourselves into all the different positions. They had funny names, including The Airplane, The Bridge and The Cat. We had a lot of fun! (Primary 1b will get to try this next week).
This afternoon, P1b made some healthy snacks. We actually began by trying Mrs Baty’s smoothie (she wasn’t so keen on the ones we tried yesterday, so brought in one of her homemade ones). Lots of us liked it a lot more than the others, and we found out how easy it was to make.
We then made our own yoghurt snacks. We mixed yoghurt, coco powder, honey and banana, and put it in the freezer. We were hoping to eat them this afternoon, but they weren’t frozen enough. It’ll just have to be our breakfast tomorrow! (P1a will make these next week).
Primary 1b had a great couple of weeks towards the end of our Fairytale Topic.
Thank you to all the mums and dads and grannys etc to who came to our Fairytale Showcase. We had such a great time telling you all about our learning. We have really enjoyed this topic.
After the showcase, we still had lots more to learn. We looked at the fairytale of Hansel and Gretal. We decided the witch was very nasty, and that we should be cooking her instead of her cooking Hansel. We wrote some amazing recipes for her.
We then made our own sweetie house. They looked yummy!
Primary 1 have had a brilliant start to their Fitness Fortnight!
This morning we went on a trip to Craigswood Xcite Leisure Centre.
It was amazing! We had 7 different activities set up for us, and the trainers were very helpful.
We experienced shot-put, using basketballs before using REAL shotput balls!!
We tried the javelin. This was very tricky.
We tried the high jump and the long jump (I think we brought back most of the sand!)
We had a go at wellie throwing.
We had a hoop game, and we had races. We were all super fast, but eventually we got our boy and girl winners. We even got prizes!!
We had a really fab time!
Then, this afternoon, we took part in our daily mile. We are enjoying it a lot more and are finding it easier now. We are even trying to run more and more of it.
Then we had some team building games.
We had a hoop game – we had to get the hoop around the circle, without letting go of each others hands. This was quite tricky, but Mrs Baty & Mrs Gaffney’s team seemed to get the hang of it very quickly.
We then had some wheelbarrow races. Most of us went in the right direction! This was great fun though.
Finally, we played a game with a ball. We stood in a row in our team, and had to pass the ball along the line in a pattern. We were quite good at this, but rather tired by this point.
Overall, we had a fantastic day! (and what great weather it was too!)
Hopefully we’ll all sleep very well tonight, and be ready for more adventures tomorrow.
Primary 1b had a very fun morning, imagining we had a Fairy Godmother, just like Cinderella!
We had some lovely wishes to ask her. We will soon be making magic wands to see if we can help make some of them come true. Photos will come later.
Grace – I would wish to be magic so I can decorate my room
Freyja – I would wish all of the world was made of chocolate
Gabrielle – I would wish for a fast, flying, spectacular pony with magic
Lucas C – I would wish for a hundred dollars
Lily – I would wish to have 5 fluffy cats
Hamza – I would wish to live in a castle
Alicia – I would wish to have a beautiful unicorn
Brooke – I would wish to be a Fairy Godmother
Lucas T – I would wish to go to Disneyland
Adriana – I would wish for a bunny
Holly – I would wish I had a magic wand
Mia – I would wish to live in a ball
Liam – I would wish for Mrs Baty to live with me
Martyna – I would wish for a sparkly cat
Mya – I would wish for a crown with gems
Nicola – I would wish for 5 cats
Gabriel – I would wish for Goofy to come to my house
Leonard – I would wish for 3 dogs
Oliver – I would wish to be stronger
Safaa – I would wish to be a princess with magic
Wojciech – I would wish for blue dogs
Catherine – I would wish to be a really fast runner
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that (some of them) come true!
Hola!
My greatest appologies for the long delay since my last update.
Primary 1b have been so busy since coming back from the Easter holidays.
First of all, our most exciting news is that we have had some post. We have had letters from ‘The Friendly Dragon’. He lives in Fairyland, but he needs our help. Fairyland is disappearing, and he has asked us to read lots of fairytales, and rebuild Fairyland in our classroom, so all the fairytale characters have somewhere to go.
So far we have read Jack and Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Three Little Pigs.
We have written some amazing stories of what we would see if we climbed the beanstalk. We also build a huge beanstalk in the classroom.
A couple of days later we came back in the classroom to see a huge mess in the classroom. Porridge was spilled everywhere and chairs were knocked over. It turns out Goldilocks had been in our classroom. She was such a monkey. We decided to make some Wanted posters, so everyone can look out for her, as she needs to come to say sorry. Although, we also read a book written by the baby bear (his name is Sam). Goldilocks is actually his friend, so we think she might be back soon.
Last week we wrote a letter to the dragon to let him know all about our adventures. He visited our classroom during playtime to read our letters. He was very impressed!
He then left us a new story, and some clues.
So this week we have been investigating The Three Little Pigs, to work out how to make our classroom comfortable for them to come to stay. We have got more straw, sticks and bricks in the class, and we are playing with them to build our own houses.
We have also been on an adventure around the school, to see what other materials things are made out of.
We found lots of metal, wood, bricks, fabric and plastic all over the school. Maybe the first two pigs could use some of these ideas? We also had some materials in the classroom, to investigate how heavy they are. We decided the feathers were the lightest, and the bricks were the heaviest.
We have been doing lots of other work too.
We are very very proud of our maths work at the moment. We have been adding numbers within 10, remembering the number bonds up to 10. We are getting very quick with these. We often play a game against Mrs Baty, and we ALWAYS win!
We have also been learning to answer take away sums. We are learning that we just need to count backwards.
We have even realised that adding and take away sums are linked! Did you know that?
Finally, Gabrielle was in a dance competition a couple of weeks ago. Both her, and her sister in nursery, had some amazing costumes and some fantastic routines. Well done girls!
We will try our best to remind Mrs Baty to update you all again very soon. Until then, adios!
We have been having a fantastic week this week, celebrating book week.
We have been engaging in lots of activities all week, and still have plenty to go.
This week we have been enjoying lots of paired reading (reading to others in the school). Primary 1 particularly enjoyed the primary 7 boys and girls reading to them.
Primary 4-7 have been going on a ‘Cluedo Quest’. Someone stole all the books from Mrs Brown’s office! They have been answering clues, leading them all around the school, to help them work out who did it!
We have been receiving some amazingly creative photos for our Extreme Reading competition. They are all on display in the gym hall. We have had children reading whilst hula hooping; upside down; in the dogs bed; on the moon; standing on top of a giant peach; on a horse; in a tree and many more!
Our teachers have been challenging us this week as well. There is a display in the gym hall, with lots of teachers hiding behind their favourite books. It is really tricky to work out who is who!
We have all been working as a class to create an imaginative display based on a favourite book, or a number of favourite books. We can’t wait to see which class wins this competition on Friday.
—
We still have many more activities to do as well!
Tomorrow (Thursday) we are participating in a book swap in the classes. Every child has been asked to bring in a book they no longer want, or read, and it will be swapped with someone else, meaning we all go home with a new book to enjoy.
Also tomorrow our teachers are all swapping classes to read a story to another class.
But the thing we are most looking forward to is the chance to dress up as our favourite book character on Friday (Nursery is on Thursday)! We have been discussing costumes all week. There is a prize for the most imaginative costume from each year group.
Keep checking back for more updates!
Today, primary 1 and 2 had a fantastic afternoon. We visited the local library. We met the author and the lead character of the children’s books Badger The Mystical Mutt.
Badger is a large black and white dog, who loves toast, and is awfully cheeky! He is also very good at magic. We watched him perform a number of magic tricks, in between annoying Laura, the author.
We also listened to a short extract from the first book.
It really was a brilliant afternoon. Thank you so much to the library and to Laura and Badger.
Primary 1 have been having a fantastic week this week. We have been celebrating books in all sorts of ways!
We have had our primary 7 buddies come to read to us twice this week! We loved listening to their stories, and even read them some stories too.
We have each designed / coloured a bookmark, which Mrs Baty says she’s going to laminate for us to keep.
We have read lots of new books and our favourite books every day this week.
We chose our favourite class book (The Selfish Crocodile) and have been designing a display on our door. It is looking so good. Fingers crossed we win the competition on Friday.
We got together to write the first page of a whole school story. We began it by introducing Mr Zebra, who was getting ready for his own birthday party with Mr Tiger and Mrs Hippo. He wore a blue and red sparkly party hat, and his party t’shirt. But on his way to the party … he fell into a puddle! We can’t wait to hear how it ends.
Today we went with the primary 2’s, to the library. We saw a short performance about Badger The Mystical Mutt. He was a very cheeky dog!
We have also been looking at some of the amazing ‘Extreme Reading’ photos. We are so creative.
We are really looking forward to the rest of the week. Tomorrow we are going to have a story from a different teacher; we have our book swap; and we can’t wait for our Dress Up Day on Friday.
Primary 1b had a fantastic time at Edinburgh Castle (please forgive the delay of this post!!!)
We arrived at the Royal Mile, and were so excited walking up the hill, to catch our first glimpse of the castle.
It was so much bigger than we expected! And luckily the weather stayed clear for us.
We visited The Crown Jewels (very pretty); The Great Hall (have you seen the size of some of those swords??? And we found the key to the entire castle); we had lunch in the dungeons; we saw Mon’s Meg (the biggest ever canon … it was huge!!) and we heard (and viewed) the one o’clock gun (it was awfully loud … it gave us such a scare).
We had a brilliant day …. and most of us fell asleep on the bus home.
Primary 1 had a super afternoon, showcasing their learning to their parents.
We began with a short presentation, telling the mummies and daddies lots of things that we have learnt about Scotland.
‘Glasgow is famous because they build big ships [on the river Clyde]’ – Gabrielle
‘Tartan is a pattern’ – Shay
‘Heid means head’ – Tavia
‘Edinburgh Castle was build on top of an old volcano’ – Grady
‘The Falkirk Wheel is like a big lift for boats’ – Liam
We then put our parents to work!!!
Some of the things they had to do, included making thistles; designing a tartan pattern; translating Scottish words; marking Edinburgh on a map and drawing a picture of Edinburgh Castle.
We had such a lovely time. It really was great seeing so many parents in our classroom. Thank you all so much for coming!!
Primary 1b have been having great fun with their numbers over the last couple of weeks. We particularly enjoyed working in teams to create numbers using our bodies. We had a team leader, who had to organise the rest of the team, and the team had to listen to them (we found it a bit tricky not to try to take over sometimes). We were proud of our hard work though.
We have been working very hard with our addition. We have been using lots of objects to help us, and have been learning number bonds up to 5 as well. We are so clever!!
This week we have also been learning about money. We have been learning to recognise coins, and to use coins to make amounts to help us buy objects in the class shop.
We loved looking at the old coins Lucas brought in. There were coins which were over 100 years old!!! There used to be a 3p coin! We think that would be helpful now! Thank you for showing them to us Lucas.
Primary 1 have been so busy these last few weeks! We have been really enjoying our Scotland topic.
Last Monday we celebrated Burns Night in the class. Primary 1 a and b got together to learn who Robert Burns was, why he is famous, and how we celebrate him. We had our own Burns Supper in the class. We tried oatcakes, shortbread and irn bru. I think you can tell by our faces that we particularly liked the irn bru. Who knew drinks could be such a bright colour?!
We have been enjoying our Edinburgh Castle themed classroom. We really enjoy pretending to be princesses and knights living in the castle. We have also been building our own castles in the construction area.
Hamish McHaggis is our new class friend. He lives in Corrie Doon, which is in the Highlands of Scotland. He is a haggis, who enjoys travelling around Scotland. He even has his own stories about his adventures! He is in our class to teach us all about Scotland. So far we have learned about Edinburgh, Inverness, Loch Ness and Glasgow.
We have been taking him home for sleepovers. He really enjoys learning what Scottish children enjoy doing, and has had fun going on walks in the Scottish countryside, watching TV, and helping to read bedtime stories.
We had a particularly fun time learning Scottish words. We now know how to sing head, shoulders, knees and toes in Scottish (or rather heid, shooders, shanks and taes).
As well as all this, we have also been learning where Scotland is on a map, what the Scottish national flower looks like, what the flag looks like (and what it’s called) and we even made our own tartan!!
Mrs Baty is so proud of all our hard work.
We can’t wait to share all our learning with you at our Scottish Showcase on Thursday (2pm in the P1 classrooms). See you there!
Since coming back after the holidays, primary 1b have been getting stuck into their work.
We have been very busy bees, and have been showing Mrs Baty how clever we all are!
We wrote some amazing sentences about our new year resolutions. We all have lovely plans for this year.
‘I want to help my mummy and daddy wash the dishes’ – Gabrielle
‘I want to eat more fruit’ – Adriana
‘I want to help look after the baby’ – Gabriel
We even had some resolutions for the following few years:
‘I want to look after my kids when I am older’ – Oliver (( how cute!!!))
We really impressed Mrs Baty when we wrote some imaginative sentences about what we might see in a castle. We used some AMAZING adjectives and some super language!!!
‘ In the haunted castle I saw a wolf. In the haunted castle I saw a humongous stretchy spider’ – Oliver
‘In the creepy castle I saw a witch with a green head. In the creepy castle I saw a bat with big wings and scary eyes’ – Martyna
‘In the castle I saw a king with a red cape. In the haunted castle I saw a black spider’ – Shay
‘In the humongous castle I saw a ghost, a giant and a dinosaur’ – Grace
‘In the scary castle I saw a ghost with a white nose’ – Adriana
‘In the creepy castle I saw a big spider that was hiding in the corner’ – Catherine
‘In the creepy castle I saw a monster with sharp claws’ – Brooke
I think we all deserve a well earned rest this weekend!!
Mrs Baty

We are looking forward to learning lots more about Scotland. Keep an eye on the blog for more updates.
Mrs Baty & Mrs Macdonald
On Tuesday afternoon primary 1 had a lovely Christmas craft afternoon. We invited our parents / carers / grandparents to come along to help us. We also had some primary 7’s come along.
We made lots of lovely things, such as a paper chain Christmas tree; reindeer food (to make sure they land on our gardens on Christmas eve); hot chocolate rudolphs. We also played games, read Christmas stories and did some Christmas worksheets.
Thank you to everyone who came along. It really was a fantastic afternoon.
Primary 1 had a really fantastic Christmas party on Wednesday afternoon.
We were all wearing our beautiful party clothes, and were so excited all day!
We played lots of games and won lots of prizes for musical statues, pass the parcel and best dancers, but our favourite was musical bumps.
We even had a visit from SANTA!!!! He gave us all a present!
We are now well and truly in the Christmas spirit!
Mrs Baty would like to appologize for the lack of blog posts recently.
We have all been working so hard over the last few weeks, making it very hard for our teacher to choose a star of the week each week.
Friday 6th November – our star of the week this week was Hamza. Hamza had been working very hard over the last week and a half (as it was just a short week the week before). He had been trying really hard with his writing and reading. Well done Hamza.
Friday 13th November – our star of the week this week was Grace. Grace had been doing brilliant listening all week and had been a lovely friend to others in the class. Well done Grace.
Friday 20th November – our star of the week this week was Wojciech. Wojciech had been working super hard with his sounds, his reading and his writing, and had been writing beautiful sentences. Well done Wojciech.
Primary 1b have been so very busy since the October holidays, that Mrs Baty has barely had any time to update the blog (very sorry about that!)
We have been working very hard with our numbers, and have been doing so well, that we are now learning numbers to 20 (and beyond!). Look at some of the things we have been doing. We are so proud of ourselves.
Today, primary 1 had a chat about their brand new topic. Now that we have finished learning about dinosaurs, we are very excited to find out what we’re going to be learning about this term.
We are beginning to learn about the sun, moon and stars, and night time animals (very big topic!).
We already know quite a lot about this:
Here are some of the things we want to learn about:
We are very excited to begin finding out lots of new things, and we will keep you updated with our fab work.
Mrs Hesketh has very kindly been busy making a new friendship spot for our playgrounds.
This lovely sign is already up in the infant playground and will soon be introduced into the other playgrounds too.
Children whose friends are off school, or are still eating lunch, can go to the spot, and can find new people to play with.
The primary 1’s have particularly loved this. They have all been keen to share stories of finding new friends or playing with someone who didn’t have anyone.
We are looking forward to hearing many more lovely stories.
Primary 1b have been learning all about hand washing, and why this is important.
We watched a video showing germs on our hands. They are so small, that we can’t see them, but apparently they can be spread really easily. We weren’t sure if we believed this or not.
So, we decided to play with glitter! The glitter is the pretend germs (just a bit bigger so we can see them). We went around the classroom, touching everything. They spread so easily! The classroom ended up covered in germs!
When we tried to wash them off, it was quite hard, we had to use soap to help make sure our hands were very clean.
This week Primary 1b have been learning about churches. Our favourite part of churches are the beautiful stain glass windows. They are so colourful!
We decided to make our own to decorate our classroom. We drew a huge squiggle with a pencil on the tracing paper, and then coloured in each section with a different colour, using felt tips. We are very impressed with them.
Primary 1b had a very busy week last week.
Here are some of the things we learned.
Mya – ‘We learned about germs’
Safaa – ‘The germs were all over the table!’
Lucas C – ‘They spread easily’
Liam – ‘We have learned 26 sounds!’
Gabrielle – ‘We learned the letter z’
Mia – ‘We wrote some fab sentences’
Shay – ‘We made lots of words’
Lucas C – ‘We made stain glass windows’
Gabriel – ‘We go to church on Sundays’
Oliver – ‘The windows are very colourful, and are found in chaples’
Freyja – ‘They are also in churches’
Lucas T – ‘Rory’s mum came to visit!’
Grace – ‘She had really big feet!’
Mrs Baty thinks we are all super stars and is very proud of us all!
Primary 1b have been so busy this week!
We have been working really hard to count and write our numbers perfectly. We have also been ordering numbers forwards and backwards, working out missing numbers and even building our own numberline (with people holding numbers).
We have been working just as hard with our sounds as well. This week we have been focusing on finding the initial sound or the middle sound in a word, as well as building words of our very own. We will be reading and writing entire stories before you know it!
On Monday, primary 1 had a surprise when we came in the classroom. We found enormous footprints on the floor all around the classroom! They went straight into the dinosaur tent. We had a chat to Rory, our class dinosaur, who told us that his mum had been in to visit! She must be huge as her feet were so big!
Rory told us that she’d had a look at our dinosaur sleepover sheets, and was pleased with how well we have been looking after him.
We then wanted to measure these footprints (using cubes), and we then compared them to the size of our feet. The dinosaur footprints were so much bigger!
We’re glad she had gone by the time we came back into class!
Primary 1 had great fun in their joint gym lesson yesterday.
We began by learning how to move like different animals.
Lions – crawling and roaring!
Kangaroos – jumping with 2 feet together
Snakes – slithering along the floor and hissing
Horses – galloping with one foot in front of the other, neighing
We then had lots of fun dancing to just dance on the whiteboard. We loved the songs and even made up some fab moves of our own. We were all sweating and breathing heavily by the end, which meant we’d been exercising well. Even Mrs Baty and Mrs Macdonald were worn out!
Thursday was a very busy day for primary 1b.
We learned all about St Nicholas. He is our school saint.
‘He left pennies for all the people in his village’ – Holly
‘ He saw a poor man who had to sell his daughters, so he gave them money’ – Gabrielle and Freyja
‘He was good as a child too’ Gabriel
‘When he died, he became a saint’ – Liam
We had a fun art lesson, making St Nicholas. We think he looks a bit like Santa.
We then went outside to practice our numbers. We had fun counting out actions (ie 5 star jumps). We then sat it groups of 2, 3 etc.
We played ‘what’s the time Mr Wolf?’ We really enjoyed this.
Finally we practiced writing our numbers in chalk.
On Wednesdays, Primary 1 will be learning about something different in the world. We have called it Wednesdays World.
This week we learned all about Lego.
Here are some of the things we have learned.
Before the man made Lego, he used to make ‘trains’ out of ‘wood’ – Leonard and Gabriel
‘It used to be made out of wood’ – Shay
‘Lego means play well’ – Oliver and Lucas C
‘It has little circles on it so it sticks together’ – Gabrielle
‘If it didn’t have the circles on it, it wouldn’t stick’ – Holly
‘The man got a machine to make it out of plastic instead of wood’ – Holly and Liam
Today Primary 1b have been having lots of fun practicing our numbers.
We have been ordering the numbers to 10, jumping on numbers before and after, counting forwards, counting backwards, singing number songs, and going on number hunts in the classroom.
Here are some pictures of us using the large number line on the floor to work out the answers to the number before / after. How clever are we?!
Primary 1b have been learning all about the T-rex today.
We found out that it was over 12 meters tall! We measured this out and decided it was about 12 of us! That’s bigger than the entire classroom!!
We also found out lots of other interesting facts about these huge dinosaurs:
‘They are carnivores’ – Lucas T
‘They are meat eaters’ – Freyja
‘They eat other dinosaurs’ – Oliver
‘They have huge, sharp teeth’ – Gabrielle
This week, we have all been working so hard, it has been almost impossible to choose a super star to be star of the week.
However, this girl really stood out, for her very hard work, always helping others, and her lovely lovely manners which have been commented on by numerous staff members.
Well done Mia!!!!
(Photo coming)
Mrs Baty
This week, primary 1b have been SUPER busy!
Here are some of the things we have learned:
We learned lots of new sounds, like ‘o’ and ‘k’ – Lucas T
We have learned lots of new numbers like ‘8’ and ‘7’ – Liam and Catherine
We have made patterns using dinosaurs ‘Lucas T’
We have been learning how to be good friends – Freyja
Dinosaurs eat plants – Gabrielle
Plant eating dinosaurs are called Herbivores – Shay
Dinosaurs eat plants and meat – Freyja
Meat eaters are called Carnivores – Liam
We really enjoyed:
I enjoyed playing duck duck goose with Mia – Oliver
I enjoyed watching the Roald Dahl show – Holly
I enjoyed making our friendship tree – Gabrielle
I’ve enjoyed singing new number songs – Brooke
Mrs Baty
Hi everyone,
We are working hard to ensure we always hang our coats up on our pegs, and keep other items of clothing on our chairs when we are not using them, however it appears that some have grown legs. Over the last few days we have misplaced ties, cardigans and jackets.
Please could I ask you all to check your childs belongings to ensure that they do not have another name in them?
Thank you in advance,
Mrs Baty
We have had such a busy day today! We have been learning about what makes a good friend in primary 1b.
Safaa – ‘We have to play nicely’
Mya – ‘A good friend is nice to others’
Mia – ‘Friends are kind’
Freyja – ‘We have to share’
We listened to The Rainbow Fish story, and we were able to discuss why he didn’t have any friends at the beginning of the story, and how he made friends at the end.
We then sat next to our friends on the carpet. See how happy we are when we are with our friends?
After this, we made friendship certificates to give to our best friend in the class.
We also used our finger prints to make a class friendship tree, which Mrs Baty is going to display in the class. It looks very pretty and colourful.
Mrs Baty
Primary 1b enjoyed maths outside today (despite the lack of sun!).
We began by playing ‘What’s The Time Mr Wolf?’ to help us practice counting. We had lots of fun!
We then practiced counting out objects and writing the number on our very own stone, for example 3 twigs, and 6 leaves.
We are super proud of our number skills!
Mrs Baty
Primary 1 have some very exciting news!!!
Today, after lunch, our dinosaur eggs hatched! Inside, we found a baby T-Rex. They were a bit naughty, with one even walking through dirt and leaving muddy footprints all over the classroom!
However they are learning quickly, and primary 1b’s dinosaur (named Rory) has even been brave enough to go on a sleepover! (With his special blanket).
We hope he has a lovely time and we are all looking forward to our turn to take him home.
Today, both primary 1a and 1b came back in our classroom after lunch to find we’d been left a very big box and a letter.
A paleontologist (a dinosaur scientist) has sent us both a real life dinosaur egg! They are HUGE!! He wants us to look after them as he’s very busy at the museum at the moment.
We learned that eggs need to be kept warm, so we’re keeping them in a nest of straw. We don’t know if it is going to hatch or not, but we are going to learn all about dinosaurs, just in case it does, so we know what to feed it and how to look after it. We’ll keep you updated.
Mrs Baty & Mrs Macdonald
Primary 1b have been working so hard to learn our sounds. So far we know ‘m’, ‘a’, ‘s’, ‘d’, and ‘t’.
We have begun to use these sounds to help us read words, and we even began making our own as well!
We would love to show you at home how we read, by saying the sounds and ‘swishing’ them together quickly, and how we have built our own words by saying the word reallllllly slllllowlllly, to help us hear the sounds we need to use.
Here are some photos of us working so hard. Look how proud we are!
Primary 1b have had a fantastic week at school. We have all worked super hard and have settled in very well.
Choosing our first pupil for our star of the week award was incredibly hard, however I’d like to say a great big well done to Catherine, who earned this award for being a super listening, an amazingly hard worker and for helping others in the class.
I wonder who it will be next week?
Mrs Baty
