P1/2 Week beginning 6.3.17

Good morning from P1/2

Last week we started a Science project looking at energy.  So far we have learned about light energy and electricity.  We have also talked about keeping safe when using electricity.  We will continue working on energy this week.

We have our class assembly on the 20th of March and will be starting to practise this week.  Keep a look out for assembly words which we might need some help with at home.

A big homework task has also been given out this week.  It is about Scottish animals.  A leaflet explaining what to do will be in homework packs today.  Big homework is due in on Monday 20th March.

Have a lovely week

Mrs Jamieson

Primary 4 week beginning 20.2.17

Welcome back after our short February break. We hope you a had a lovely time.

We would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended parents evening. We would like to remind anyone who could not make it to feel free to make an appointment at another time that is more convenient.

This week we have started to look more closely at the features of non-fiction texts. We will be continuing to learn about them and use them in various lessons across the curriculum. If you have access to any books at home, please ask your child to teach you about their features.

We have continued to learn about electricity in science and have been experimenting with conductors and insulators this week. Next week we will be planning to build our own homes with working circuits in them.

Next week we will also be learning about comic life in I.C.T. We are hoping eventually, to create our own comics we made when we were learning about D.C Thompson and Dundee using the Comic Life software.

We are looking forward to having lots of visitors in our school next week and showing them all of our hard work.

Reminders for 20.2.17

Primary 4 3.2.17

This week we have been working hard in our assessment jotters to show our abilities across the curriculum.  These will be in pupil trays  this week at Parents’ Evening, and hopefully you will be able to see the progress your child has made between October and January.

We have started to look at electricity in Science. We are looking forward to building our own circuits and making different components work using batteries and wires. This week, we began by looking at electrical safety. The children’s knowledge on this was good and we had an excellent discussion. One thing we need to investigate is how birds can touch electricity wires without being electrocuted.

Next Monday, you will see your child’s spelling words and format changing. Children will still receive spelling words to be studied at home, however these will be based on a different sound each week.

This sound should be learned, and words should be written out across the page in look, cover, write and check format as normal. Activities will be expected to be completed alongside twice a week. This will show the children’s ability to transfer their understanding of the words, and knowledge of the spelling rule.

As of next Tuesday for four weeks, P4S will have another session of indoor PE on a Tuesday. Please ensure children have kit on this day. Reminders will  be written in homework jotters.

Reminders:

Parents’ Evenings take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both primary 4 classes currently have student teachers. The student teachers will be in the room during the parent consultations in order to learn from them. If this is an issue, please do not hesitate to make us aware beforehand by contacting the office.

Tuesday 7th – Indoor PE kit P4S

Wednesday 8th – Indoor PE kit both classes

Thursday 9th – Outdoor PE kit P4D

Dress Down Day run by P.S.A – Please come dressed in love hearts, pink or red, or even just your best                              outfit on Thursday and bring 50 pence as a donation. All money raised will go towards providing                                      resources for the school.

Friday 10th – Holiday

Homework due Thursday:

Children with their class talk information sheets due this day.

Spelling homework.

Reading homework plus one activity.

Primary 6 1.2.17

Hello everyone!

Primary 6 have enjoyed a very busy week so far. On Monday the children researched and created character profiles for their given passenger who was on board the maiden, and only, voyage of the Titanic. Today the children were able to develop their facts and created a biography of their Titanic passenger. The children worked extremely hard and we are very pleased with the results.

In Science, we have begun learning about The Human Body. Children learned about the main organs, their functions and locations inside our bodies. The children are looking forward to learning more about the different systems of the body including the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems.

On Monday and Tuesday we explored the celebration of Chinese New Year. Children explored the traditional story of Chinese New Year and some also created cards for family and friends in the lucky colour red. A big thanks to Cameron (P6C) who even taught some of us how to write and speak in mandarin!

On Monday, the school held its annual Burns Afternoon. As part of this we sang “You’re Welcome Willie Stewart” and Daisy and Aleigha recited their winning poems. A group of P6 and 7 pupils from the Senior Challenge Group organised and ran the whole afternoon. A huge well done to them for planning such an excellent and well received event!

This week is Assessment Week which means that children have been completing all of their work in a special assessment jotter. The children have been working extremely hard to complete their best work. Please look out for these jotters in your children’s jotters next week when you are in school for parent consultations. These will take place on Tuesday 7th February 5-7.30pm and on Wednesday 8th February 4-6.30pm. You can book your appointments online or through the school office.

This week, P6C have been given their new reading books. Each group should have read Chapter 1 by next Monday (Chapters 1-3 for the blue group) when we will start Literacy Circles. The children will be given a homework booklet on Monday with one piece of homework to complete each week for the following Monday. Please look out for these novels and booklets in your child’s homework folder beginning on Monday.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Miss Clark, Mrs Kelly & Mrs Wylie

Primary 1/2 Week beginning 21.11.16

Hello everyone

Primary 1/2 have had another busy week.  Last week we welcomed our Erasmus visitors.  They came to visit us in class and taught us some new words from different countries.  We also took part in a Scottish assembly.

In science we were learning about the moon.  We have learned about the phases of the moon and watched videos of last weeks super moon.  Over the next month we will be looking out for the moon and recording the phases we can see.

We have been working on the story of Hansel and Gretel and enjoyed playing in the Gingerbread cottage.  We have also been working on puppet shows to retell the story and have made clay gingerbread cottages.  We look forward to painting these this week.

Rehearsals for our Nativity play are well underway.  Primary 1 are working hard learning their parts.  All Primary 1 children will be on the stage and will be provided with a costume.  Primary 2 children are also working hard to learn their parts.  Thank you to all parents for your support with this; it is greatly appreciated.  We will be using our hall time over the next few weeks for rehearsals and PE will be party games, therefore no PE kit will be required for the rest of the term.

Have a good week

Mrs Jamieson

Primary 1 w.b. 3.10.16

Last week was very busy for Primary 1! Throughout the week the children’s work was put into their learner’s journey to show their learning so far in the year. The children made a great effort in all their work and should be very proud of themselves. You will be able to see this jotter at the upcoming parent’s evening.
In Science Primary 1 have been focusing on their senses. They are aware that they have 5 senses and have enjoyed learning about the sense of smell and touch in class. We will continue looking at the remaining senses this week.
Thank you for all your support at home learning sounds and practicing number formations. Please continue to practise all sounds and numbers at home. During this week we will also be issuing word boxes with common words along with a list of suggested activities to practise at home. Children have been taking home a school library book on a Monday to read at home with an adult. Please make sure that this book is returned on a Friday, there is no need to bring it every day.
Reminders:
P.E. is on Monday – please remember to bring named shorts and T-shirt.
Please can you bring clean junk (yoghurt pots, plastic bottles etc) in on Tuesday to make musical instruments in class.
Thank you for your support
Miss Christy, Mrs Oliver and Mrs Muir

Primary 4 1.9.16

It was lovely to see so many parents on Tuesday night, thank you for coming along to see us. If you couldn’t manage, don’t worry, we have put a class newsletter into your child’s bag as well as a spelling homework exemplar to see the kinds of things we will be doing in the first term of Primary 4.

We have had a busy week this week settling into our new class properly. We have discussed and created our class charter based on the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. We have used this charter to decide upon our classroom rules. The whole school focus has been on SHANARRI, and within this acronym, Primary 4 have focused on Inclusion. We discussed and gave examples of how we were all included in Carmondean Primary School and then illustrated these ideas using pens and coloured paper. We have sent home the charter we decided on to allow you to see what rules we shall be following this year. These are in the children’s words and what they found important to them. Please could you return the tear off slip at the bottom of the rules letter to show your support and understanding of the importance of following these.

We have been learning about colour as one of the visual elements of Art, and even did a science experiment investigating colour!

We have started planning our Viking topic this week and look forward to learning more about it this term. We have had some fantastic ideas from the children such as making Viking food, creating a small viking village and even creating our very own life sized viking! We also thought of a lot of questions we would like to have answered by the end of the topic which has given Miss Donaldson, Miss Miller and myself lots of food for thought when planning the topic.

Children have been given letters home relating to their achievements and interests. We would be extremely grateful if these could be completed and handed back into school.

Reminders:

Letters to be returned to office: personal information, achievements, agreement of rules.

Please could we ask all items of clothing to have the children’s initials on them for ease of identifying the owners. We have had a few items lost and thankfully found this week, but it would be made easier with names on them somewhere.

Tuesday – outdoor PE kit (warm, appropriate clothing and shoes.)

Thursday – Indoor PE kit (dark coloured shorts and white t-shirt if possible)

Homework

Due Friday 9th

– Spelling homework:  see newsletter for further information, 4 days of spelling words completed in homework jotter.

– Reading homework: read with a parent / guardian at least 10 pages of personal choice reading book.

– Learn computer login details. These will be in the front of homework diaries.

Due Monday 12th

– Use of water grid – one night of the week (once home from school) children should place tally marks every time family members use water for any activity. This could be making a cup of tea, washing up, wetting a cloth, running a bath, having a shower. Grids will be made in class and put into spelling homework jotters.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Smith and Miss Donaldson.

Primary 7 – 26.2.16

Happy Friday everyone!

This week in Primary 7 we started work on an ICT challenge. Children in groups of 4 had to create their own PowerPoint showing different fashions/uniforms during WW2. The children then had to write a script and record their own voices on the computer program “Audacity” to give their audience more information about fashion in 1940s Britain. Next week we will work on rehearsing the timings of our voice recordings and PowerPoint slides to ensure they are in sync. Then we will present our finished product to the rest of the class.

Children are continuing to work hard on “Hosanna!” (this years P6/7 show). All lines should be memorised by Monday, please support your child with this at home if necessary. Please note that the date of the show is Wednesday 16th March and all children are expected to attend both the afternoon show and the evening show. If your child cannot attend the evening show please send a letter into school as soon as possible to let the school know.

In science this week we have been learning about coal mining. The children explored the effects that coal mining can have on the surrounding land through conducting an experiment. We used a tool (toothpick) to “mine” for coal (chocolate chips) in our land (a cookie!) We discussed the importance of the force we used when “mining” and the impact that this had on our “land” (or cookie!) Some cookies were relatively unaffected by the mining whilst others were completely destroyed! The children now understand the effects that coal mining can have on the surrounding land. Next week we will move onto learning about oil and the impact that fossil fuels are having on our environment.

Primary 3 have organised a World Book Day event for the whole school on Thursday 3rd March. Children can come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. There is no charge for this event. As part of our World Book Day celebrations Primary 7 will also be visiting their P1 buddies in the afternoon in order to read with them and complete some activities on their favourite books. We’re all looking forward to this 🙂

Please bring both outdoor and indoor PE kit next Monday and Tuesday. Also please note that our homework schedule is:

Spelling – due Friday each week
Maths – due Thursday each week
Reading – will be given out on Wednesday 2nd March and due in the following Wednesday (09.03)

Have a great weekend!

Miss Clark, Miss Farren & Miss Walker

Primary 4 25.2.16

This week we have been busy practising our assembly for the rest of the school and our parents. We hope if you came to watch it, you enjoyed it and learned a lot. We have loved showing off all of our work and are very proud of how much we have learned so far!

Our science electricity challenge has finally been completed this afternoon with only a few more groups to report back. We have self and peer assessed our ability to make working circuits which include wires, buzzers, lights, batteries and motors. Our challenge stated we had to create a house with upstairs and downstairs which included working circuit components. It was up to us what we used the components for. We had a motorised revolving chair, a washing machine, a revolving ballerina for a jewellery box. Our creativity in this challenge really was super! Here are a few pictures.100_8191100_8183100_8190

Please remember next Thursday we have a dress down day where we have been asked by Primary 3 to come in dressed as a character from a book. Everyone has their thinking caps on with this one! Even the teachers!

Primary 4 have to organise the Day for Change very soon. If anyone has any ideas, please add a comment below. In the past we have had a change of disguise, change of hair do, wear our clothes backwards for a change, change of time (come into school in our PJs) so any other ideas are welcome!

Friday 11th March – Class Talks

Primary 4 22.1.16

We have been practicing our poems this week and were all ready for Thursday. Although the nerves and excitement were running high, they got the better of no-one and everyone managed at least one verse. I am very proud of the people who managed to learn the whole poem off by heart! It was very impressive and I thank you for your time and commitment.

Well done to Skye and Keira who went through to the finals. The competition was fierce and it was such a hard choice as both girls showed great talent and huge amounts of confidence.

Congratulations to Skye who has made it to the next round.

We have been experimenting with circuits in Science this week. we hope next week to have a look at the components of a circuit and be able to make our own bulbs, buzzers and motors work.

I am heading to Poland for one week to continue the exciting work on our Erasmus Project. I hope to come back with lots more ideas and information about the Polish culture and traditions, especially those connected to Easter and Christmas.

Thank you to Allan who has been preparing me for my visit, teaching me the important phrases I will need for my journey. Allan, dziekuje for your help 🙂

I will hopefully be able to update the Blog whilst I am away and look forward to hearing your comments and questions again.

Miss Leyland will be in charge of the class along with Mrs Gilmour and there are lots of fun and exciting things in store, especially in our topic work where we are now learning about the city of Glasgow.

I shall see you all in a week! Work hard and have fun! 🙂

Thank you again for all of you efforts,

Miss Smith

Primary 4 15.1.16

We received a letter to kick start our Scotland topic which asked us to help with some research of Scottish myths and legends. Children participated in research tasks and found out three main mythical creatures connected to Scotland. These are Kelpies, selkies and Nessie.

We have been using our atlas skills to work out the countries and capitals of the United Kingdom. We also were learning more about North, South, East and West, as well as the points in between.

In science, we conducted experiments, learning about static electricity. We had some very interesting hairstyles afterwards as we had to think of ways to ‘charge’ our balloons.

I hope children have been practising their poems over the last week ready for our class competition next Thursday. There will also be opportunities in class to recite poems with the teacher and classmates before then. Class winners will then recite their poem to the school on Friday of next week. Winners from this competition will attend the main Burns poetry recital.

Thank you this week to everyone for having their PE kit in on the days we had PE with only the exception of one or two both days. It made a huge difference. Hopefully the weather will pick up for next Tuesday and we will be able to get out for some rugby. It was not in our favour this week.

Reminders:

Sign homework diaries

Tuesday –  Outdoor PE kit needed. Please bring warm clothes

Wednesday – Indoor PE kit needed.

Homework:

Due:

Thursday 21st – Burns poem recital in class. Please have these learned. Children know the expectations for this as they differ between poems.

Friday 22nd – Reading Red – p.27-46

Blue – p.23 – 36

Green – p.20-28

Spelling – look cover write check each night. One night sentences in Berol script handwriting. Please note, this is to build confidence, and is as practice. I am by no means expecting perfection with linked script at this stage.

Thank you,

Miss Smith
