Primary 1 Week beginning 19th September

We hope that you have all had a lovely restful, long weekend!

This week we will be having a focus on consolidating and assessing the work we have done so far in the first few weeks of Primary One. Throughout the year we will have regular weeks where we will revisit sounds, common words and number work that we have learned to ensure that the children have a firm grasp of what has been taught so far.

We will also be continuing our topic of Myself and My School.  Last week we had a focus on school lunches which led us onto a conversation about healthy and unhealthy foods.  This will be built on this week in class through a group tasting session of fruit and vegetables.  We are then planning to discuss our favourites, create graphs showing this and then we will write about something we liked and something we didn’t like.

The majority of you indicated that you would prefer to receive a hard copy of the fortnightly homework sheet so we have made the decision to give everyone a hard copy but also post the homework here on the blog for people who would like to access links for games/songs etc quickly and easily.   Please find the link to this below.  If you have any questions about homework please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Reminders-

-Children will now be changing for PE on a Monday. It would be helpful, if possible if children could come with kit on underneath uniform.  Please name all clothes.

-Our P1 Open Afternoon/Morning will take place next Thursday 27th (pm) and Friday 28th (am).  We would love to see as many parents as possible come and find out a little bit more about what and how your child is learning in P1 this year.

-Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday-we would ask that children bring their Reading books and Reading Records every day.

Konnichiwa!

We had a wonderful visit this week from Ben and Yoko from the Japanese Consulate in Edinburgh. After practising different greetings in Japanese we learned how to count to ten in Japanese and then we used our new number knowledge to answer a quiz all about Japan. We were astonished about some of the answers …did you know that there is a hotel in Japan where you are served by a dinosaur robot? Ben and Yoko also taught us how to make origami sumo wrestlers; we even had our own sumo matches! Arigatou Ben and Yoko.

During writing this week we composed haiku poems .The results were poignant and thought provoking. Some pupils created Japanese and a contrasting Scottish haiku. Some of them are displayed in our writing corridor; please have a look if you are visiting the school.

We have been on an emotional roller coaster this week during our Wonder reading sessions. In the first section of the book we listened to the voice of August, the second section is told through August’s big sister Via. It opens with the words, “Far above the world, planet earth is blue”. We wonder is anyone knows were these words come from?

Within numeracy we are continuing to look at multiples of 10 and problem solving involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

What a busy week we have had! We have had some interesting discussions around seasons and why we have them. This has helped Summer Winter, our weather fairy, gain a deeper understanding of the weather we experience during each season and the clothes we have to wear. In writing we have been using a wide range of vocabulary to extend our sentences further describing what we can see. In maths we have developed our understanding of the properties of 2 and 3D shapes as well as develop our addition and subtraction strategies using a 100 square.

This weekend is a long one! So we will see you Wednesday 19th September. PE will resume as normal. New reading books will be issued, please read these daily for practise. There will be no spelling or maths homework next week.

Have a great weekend!

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith & Ms Matheson

Primary 1 – week beginning 10 September 2018

We have had a busy week in Primary 1! We have learnt the sounds ‘p’ and ‘n’ and are developing our understanding of words that have these sounds in them. We have been practising the correct formation of these sounds and have heard lots of stories about children practising them at home too – well done! Please refer to the sheet at the front of the yellow homework book for correct formation. It is very important to get it right at this early stage before habits are formed.

In maths we have been exploring numbers to 10, specifically focusing on 7 and 8. We have used our fingers, ten frames and rekenreks to develop a secure understanding of each number. Some of us are even able to split the number into two sets.

We have begun our consultative planning and the children’s interest has led us onto healthy and unhealthy foods, our likes and dislikes and exploring where clean water comes from. We look forward to doing a tasting session next week! We have been using our clas floorbooks to note down ideas and the teachers use these to identify gaps in our learning and take these interests forward.

Thank you to those who returned the homework sheet regarding the blog. An overwhelming amount of parents/carers have requested a hard copy and therefore we have decided to provide a hard copy for all, as well as posting the homework on the blog fortnightly.

Reminders:

  • Please ensure your child’s Reading book and blue log come into school daily. We have purchased new reading bags for the children and these will be gifted at our open event (see below)
  • Our open afternoon is on Thursday 27 September at 2.15pm and our open morning is on Friday 28 September at 9.00am. You are only asked to attend one session as both are the same. We are doing it on two separate occasions to try and account for working patterns.
  • We will be beginning to change into our gym kit for gym. Please ensure your child brings their kit on a Monday.

Primary 4 13.9.18

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely week. We’ve had a busy week in Primary 4.

This week the children created their own Viking character. The children drew their Viking and used descriptive language to describe his/her physical appearance and personality. We then wrote about an adventure that our Viking went on focusing on a problem our Viking encounters and resolving the problem at the end of our story. Soon we will do some drama work related to our Viking characters, acting as if we actually are our character!

In Health we have been learning about the value of honesty. The children discussed why it is important to be honest and how not telling the truth can sometimes cause a lot more trouble. The children then displayed their knowledge which will now form part of a classroom display.

In maths the children have been learning about 2D shapes and patterns. The children are able to identify different 2D shapes and discuss their properties confidently. They will now use their knowledge of pattern and shape to create symmetrical Viking shields. We’re sure they will look fantastic!

There will be no homework next week due to the long September weekend. Spelling/maths homework will resume as normal on Monday 24th September.

Reminders:
PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor). Please ensure that your child has appropriate kit on these days.

Foxes spelling sound: -mb

We hope you have a lovely long weekend. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school next Wednesday 🙂

Primary 2 11.9.18

Primary 2 have been learning about what home life was like in the past. We have compared household items that were used many years ago and what we use now. The children decided that life is much easier! Keep speaking to your children about many significant changes in life style to help them have a better understanding.

In Numeracy we have been writing and recognising numbers up to 100. Children have been using 100 squares, SEAL games and teacher led activities to become more familiar with these numbers and where they fall in the number line. In Maths we were naming a number of 2D shapes and this week we are going to be learning all about their properties.

We did some fantastic pieces of character writing last week about a Teddy Bear. The children tried to use a variety of adjectives to describe their bear which was found in an old fashioned Toy Store. This week we are going to describe the setting for our story and continue our focus on sentence structure and the use of adjectives.

We hope you are enjoying our new ORT books and managing to do lots of reading at home. Our phonic sounds this week are: ph and wh.

Homework is due on Thursday please (not reading books). We will allocate some time in class for the children to share their homework activities with a friend. New homework will be issued after the September break. We hope the new style of homework in P2 is working for you all.

Reminders: Water bottles, P.E kits and after school club letters.

Thanks,

Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

“Your deeds are your monuments”

( Wonder by R.J.Palacio)

Mr Browne’s percept this week created some interesting discussing in class. We thought August summed it up very well, “The things we do are the most important things of all…That’s why your deeds are like your monuments. Built with memories instead of with stone. “

We created some thought provoking wonder displays this week . We have a question for you …what do you wonder about ?

We journeyed to Asia this week to begin our topic on Japan. We now have origami cranes decorating our classrooms, a symbol of peace inspired by the life of Sadako Sasaki . Please ask your P7 to tell you her story, it’s very memorable. We are delighted to announce that we are having visitors form the Japanese consulate next week.

Taking inspiration from our visit from the author David McPhail , we have created detective stories this week , focusing on creating interesting sidekick characters . Look out Holmes and Watson!

Within numeracy we are continuing with rounding and estimating . We also spent time on multiplication games which can be played anywhere. Please ask your primary 7 to show you .

Primary 3 Friday 7th September 2018

We are now almost three weeks into the new term and we have been busy bees in Primary Three.

Our Weather topic has started and we have received a letter from the Weather Station explaining they need our help. They have a weather fairy, SummerWinter, who is not learning enough about the weather and is causing mayhem for us all on Earth. She has been sending the wrong information and people are going out dressed inappropriately for the weather so we are helping her learn. Mrs Thunder, her boss has been sending us missions.

This week we were asked to create our own weather forecasts and to present them to make a training video for SummerWinter.

We have also created a cloud to make communication easier between us and the Weather Station.

Primary Three are also beginning to learn about Seasons and relating these to crops and activities on farms in preparation for Harvest. Words for our first school assembly will be sent home after the September break, so please look out for these. This assembly is not a parents’ assembly and is for the rest of the school.

We loved meeting so many of you at Meet the Teacher. Thank you for discussing the class charter with you child and completing the tear off slip and achievement letter and returning these to school.

Thank you for your continued support so far.

Reminders:

  • Please can you put names on jumpers. There are 3 jumpers in P3S unclaimed.
  • PE days are as follows:

P3S – Outdoor – Tuesdays, Indoor – Thursdays

P3M/S – Outdoor – Mondays , Indoor Wednesdays

Please can children bring appropriate kit on these days?

Primary 5 2.9.18

Primary 5 have had another busy week.

We have been working on our Great Britain topic and have completed a challenge to research key facts about Great Britain in groups.  Each group have prepared a poster about 1 country and will be teaching these facts to their class next week.

In Maths we have continued to work on angles.  This week we have also started to look at compass points and calculate the distance between each point in degrees.  We have also been learning how to use the Probots to make pathways round the classroom.

In reading and writing we have been looking at the way an author uses description to create a setting and and we wrote a description of our own.

The children will bring their first homework home today.  Please check their diary for details and return all completed homework by Thursday 13th September.  Dates for PE are also in diaries.

Have a good week

Primary 2 4.9.19

Welcome to Primary 2! We hope all the boys and girls are beginning to settle into their new classrooms. It was lovely to meet some of you at the meet the teacher last Wednesday.  We will update the blog weekly with information about P2.

Yesterday we sent home our first piece of homework. The children are being given two weeks to complete the activities in their Share It Jotter. Reading needs to be completed regularly and we will change these books on a Monday (children must bring in current reading book before they are issued with a new one). After two weeks the children will be encouraged to share their homework activities with the class.

Our new topic is Grandparents. We are going to be learning about all of the activities, toys, food, music, dance, dress and technology from the 1950s-70s. Please encourage your children to speak to elderly family members or friends to get an insight about what life was like and how it has changed.

We are learning forward and backward number sequences up to 100 in Numeracy. The children are using 100 squares to help them with this and we are using songs to help remember all of our numbers, especially before and after numbers. We are also going to be learning the proporties of 2D shapes.

During reading the children will be completing reading tasks linked to their ORT reading book and will be encouraged to read aloud in class and involve themselves in the group discussions. Our main focus in writing this term is visualisation and understanding how to construct a sentence correctly. We will also be looking into the importance of adjectives and simple connectives during writing lessons.

Specialists: Both classes are receiving Art from Mrs Fox and Music from Mr Shanks. P.E will be taught by class teachers this term.

Primary 2 are allowed to bring in one small toy to play with during Free Time Friday, however we must stress that the children are responsible for looking after their own toy. If your child does not have a toy with them then they may choose a toy/game from the classroom to play with.

Reminder: Could all children please bring in a water bottle to have in the class. This is often drank during milk and story time or after P.E, break and lunch.

If there are any more questions please feel free to get in touch,

Thanks, Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 1 3rd September 2018

The children are continuing to settle well into school and are now becoming more familiar with the routines of the classroom.  This week we will be learning s and i in our phonics lessons, continuing to learn songs and actions to go with these.  We will be focusing on finding things that start or end with the sounds that we are learning and the correct formations of  the letters.

In Maths this week we will be learning how to correctly form the numbers to 5 in jotters and on whiteboards.  We will also be singing counting songs and counting forwards and backwards together to 20, starting at different numbers.  In small groups we will be looking at the structure of numbers to 10 using ten frames and rekenreks,  We will be using these regularly in our Maths lessons so this is a good opportunity for the children to become familiar with them.

We introduced our topic ‘Our School’ last week and the children recorded lots of things they knew about school and what they would like to find out in our floor books.  This was a great chance for the children to contribute their ideas about what they would like to learn and have a chance to shape some of the areas in the classroom.  So far we have added registers and teacher’s diaries to the writing table along with labels so the children can make their own stickers which they are really enjoying.  We have been looking at clocks, money and timetables for the day in the Maths area and have been designing and building schools with our blocks.  The children have been enjoying getting ready for school in the home corner by packing lunches and schoolbags and pretending to do homework.

This week your child will get their first Home Learning sheet.  This will be issued on a Tuesday and you will have two weeks to complete it.  There will be some starred activities which we ask that you complete with your child.  The other activities are optional and you can do as many or a few as you and your child prefer.  Anything that has been done can be recorded in their Home Learning book for us to have a look at together back in class. This homework will normally be posted here on the blog but if you require a hard copy this can be arranged. Alongside this, your child will get a new reading book every Tuesday.  Initially these books will be wordless- please encourage your child to discuss the book and the characters and talk about their favourite part. Each book will have an extended story included that can be read to them and will aid discussion.  We ask that you read along with your child at least twice a week and that your child brings their Reading book to school every day.

Reminders-

-P.E will be on Monday (indoors) and Tuesday (outdoors).  We do not require gym kit for the first few weeks, we will inform you when the children will be starting to change.

-Children should have a bottle with them each day to drink from-these should contain water only.

-Please ensure all clothing is labelled.

-Bring Reading book to school every day.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to one of us at the end of the day or call the office and we can get back to you.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Pringle, Mrs Oliver, Miss Christy and Mrs Steel

Primary 5 31.08.18

Welcome back to our new term.  Primary 5 have settled in well and are beginning to understand the routines of their new stage. Last week Miss Carrigan joined P5J and will be working with us until after Christmas.

This week we had a visit from an author called David MacPhail.  He was very inspiring and helped us with some tips for writing.

This week we have started our new Health topic called Bad Times Don’t Last.  We will be learning about resilience and how to cope when things go wrong.  We have also started our topic Great Britain and this week we have used an Atlas to look at a map and identified the countries of Great Britain.

This term in reading we are studying a whole class novel called the Spiderwick Chronicles.  We will also be given reading books for enjoyment which will be handed out at the end of next week for homework.

In Maths we have been learning to identify different angles.

Homework will begin next Friday.  The children will be given Reading, Spelling and Maths.  This should be completed and returned by the following Thursday.

Our PE days this term are Monday for outdoor PE and Thursday for indoor PE.  This term we are doing playground games outdoor therefore PE kit is optional on this day, however we would be grateful if children were equipped with appropriate shoes and jackets for that day.  The children are also taking part in the weekly mile on Friday mornings so appropriate footwear is needed for then too.

Primary 7

It was lovely to see so many of you at our meet the teacher session on Wednesday, thanks to those who came along. Our first term newsletter has now been distributed and it provides a brief overview of what we will be working on. We continue to be very impressed with the attitude all the primary sevens are demonstrating with regards to their buddies, well done!

“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind”

We are currently reading Wonder by R.J.Palacio and just as Bradley Chalkers became an extra member of our class in primary six , August Pulman  seems to be having the same affect  . We will be continuing with the novel over the next few weeks and discussing the various precepts …primary Sevens please explain what that means!

We are easing gently into numeracy and maths, looking at rounding, estimating and symmetry. Due to popular demand we are starting Beat That! today.

Our Bounce Back hall display is almost complete and the impact of the programme is evident in how much the pupils can recall about the stories we looked at last year. We will continue to discuss strategies that we can use to build our resilience and determination.

Within our writing lessons this week we used Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes as inspiration to create our own twist on traditional tales, our pupils’ imaginations made it a rather surreal experience!

Next week we will be beginning our topic on Japan .
