Can I please take the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the generous retirement gift I received from Carmondean Parents and Carers on Friday. I was both surprised and overwhelmed to be given such a gift. As I leave to pursue other avenues, I know that Carmondean remains in good hands and that the entire school team will continue to give their best efforts to caring for and educating your children. We can’t believe that there is only 1 more week of term left! This year has flown by!
Primary 1 have been working hard this past week. In phonics they have learnt the ‘oa’ sound pattern and were able to say lots of words containing this sound. Many children were able to challenge themselves to write these words in a sentence, remembering a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. This was our last week of reading books. All books should be handed in today and new books will be handed out in Primary 2. Please continue reading over the holidays to build your child’s confidence sounding out unknown words and recognising key vocabulary.
In maths, the children have been learning about odd and even numbers. They know that even numbers always end with a 0,2,4,6 or 8 and that odd numbers end in 1,3,5,7 or 9. Here is a fun odd and even song you might want to sing at home:
In science we have been learning about space. The children discussed all that they know about the Earth, sun, moon and stars and created some excellent pictures.
This was our last week of homework and will be our last formal blog post of the year.

Livingston United Parish Church has been given some funding from West Lothian Council to run some activity days for children during the summer holidays as part of the Scottish Government’s Summer of Play programme. There are five themed days aimed at enabling children to connect and play with one another, and a free lunch will be offered to all children who attend and their families. They are open to all, but are targeted in particular (i) children from low income households, and (ii) children who were shielding.

The 2021 Deans ‘Get into Summer’ Active Fun Active Feet’ Holiday Programme is taking place at Deans CHS on Thursday 5th & Friday 6th August from 09:00 to 15:00 for all pupils currently in P1 to P7.
Pupils will take part in a wide range of activities including Athletics, Basketball, Football, Multi sport activities, Parachute Games, Playground Games and much more.
Active Fun Active Feet is supported by West Lothian Council Accredited Sports clubs working in partnership with the Active Schools and Community Sport Team.

Primary 2 had a super week last week! We all loved taking part in our Sports Day!! Well done to the winning house and a huge well done to all the Primary 2 children who took part. We had lots of fun!
We are still learning about hot countries. Last week were learning about the Rainforest and this week we a focusing on the African Plains. We can’t wait to learn about all the wild animals that live in Africa.
In maths we have been revising addition and subtraction. This week we are going to be practising our times tables and dividing. We have also been enjoying using the beebots to learn about direction.
We are still completing our reading regularly in class and today the children will come home with new reading books. Please continue to read the book with your child. We have also issued our last piece of P2 homework- this has been uploaded on Seesaw.
Its been another hot week and we hope it continues! We are trying to get outside as much as we can to enjoy this beautiful weather. We have been using the chalks to practise our drawing and spelling skills, using the large hundred square outside and continuing our P.E sessions outside.
Today Primary 2 are taking part in a whole school litter pick. We have extra litter pickers and hoops, and Primary 2 have been given the job of collecting litter from the outer playground and field. We hope you can see a real improvement when you come to collect the children.
Please remember to bring a water bottle to school. Wear P.E clothes on P.E days.

We’ve had another fantastic week of fun in Primary 1. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Ferguson for organising the Sports Day for Primary 1 this week. We had the opportunity to race in our house teams, play the javelin and football. We played lots of fun games and worked together in lots of team sports. Everyone tried their best and did a fantastic job! We also wrote about our experiences from sports day and the sport that we liked best.
This week in phonics we were learning the ‘oy’ sound. We created our favourite toys using different crafts and practised writing sentences with ‘oy’ words in them. In maths we revisited time and ordered the day in the life of a farmer using o’clock analogue times. We were also learning new mental maths strategies including doubles and near doubles.
We were learning all about fair trade this week and sorted food that comes from UK farms and products that come from abroad. We looked at the fair trade logo and learned more about farmers abroad through Paoblo the banana farmer.
We also talked about road safety and the importance of looking, listening and crossing the road safely. We discussed being safe getting in and out of the car and how to be a safe passenger.

Good morning everyone, Primary 6 have had another busy week.
In topic this week we have been learning about the Sinking of the Titanic. We have watched videos and read information on the timeline and have also studied all the faults which caused the ship to sink so quickly. Our favourite part was watching interviews with some of the survivors who shared their expericences.
We had great fun at Sports day on Wednesday, we took part in a variety of potted sports, relays and beat the goalie.
In maths we have been learning about square numbers and function machines. We really enjoyed creating our own function machines to challenge our friends.
We have learned that the main characters in our novel Kaspar Prince of Cats have boarded the Titanic. We can’t wait to read on to find out what happens to them.
Next week we will be beginning to present our class talks on our Titanic characters. Can you please check that your child is ready for their presentation.

This week we have seen our caterpillars grow and become chrysalids! The pupils are all very excited that the metamorphosis from caterpillar into butterfly is beginning and hopefully very soon we will have our beautiful butterflies. During our topic, we have been researching intently looking at different mini beasts which have been started to be put into Sways to present to each other. There has been some very detailed research and we are looking forward to learning lots of new information.
We have continued to look at analogue time in maths and have been looking at minutes past and minutes to the hour and the pupils have picked it up in no time. They have been enthusiastic about learning about the time and we have made our own clocks to tell the time with. We have also been rounding in 10s and 100s with good confidence.
We’re nearing the end of Charlotte’s Web and we’re hoping for a lovely happy ending for all the animals. We created menus for Templeton the rat with the scraps at the fair and it’s safe to say that all menus were suitably and horrifically disgusting!
Over the last couple of weeks we have had presentations from our Chanter and Brass teachers and there has been a real musical buzz from the pupils. There should be a group call going out at some point in the near future to give more information.

It has been a busy week in Primary Five!
We had lots of fun at our annual Sports Day on Thursday morning! It was a little different than normal but we had lots of fun with all the fun activities set up by Mrs Ferguson and Miss Malloy! There were lots of fun potted sports to start; javelin throwing contests, rugby tosses, tennis ball serves and relay running. We then moved on to Beat the Goalie which was lots of fun and a lot trickier than it looked! Last up there was lots of fun running and relay races; there was some close finishes!Well done to every Primary 5 member who took part, tried their hardest, showed great sportsmanship and had fun!
The overall points were so close and there was less than 20 points in it! These are the rankings for the Primary 5 Sports Day but we will have to wait until all the year groups scores are added together!

This week in Writing, the class wrote superb senses poems inspired by a 13th century battlefield. The children used their imagination to transport themselves onto the battle field at Stirling Bridge, Falkirk or Bannockburn and tried to envisage what they might see, smell, hear, taste and touch. They came up with lots of gory words to create some really gruesome descriptions. The children were very creative coming up with different bodily fluids that you might find on a battlefield . They then organised their ideas into five different stanzas each focussing on a different body sense. The finished poems were fantastic and we had fun sharing them with the class.
In Maths, both classes were working on measuring weight. Primary 5a faced the tricky task of organising 10kilograms worth of (imaginary) fruit for the new (imaginary) Carmondean Fruit Tuck Shop. This involved having to convert weights between grams and kilograms as well as using fractions and decimals.
In Numeracy, both classes have been working hard on decimals. They have been learning how to convert between fractions and decimals, and this week took on the challenge of adding decimals. Both classes have made excellent progress on this!
In Reading, we have reached the final chapter of our non-fiction text for The Scottish Wars of Independence. The classes were amazed that they had managed to read the whole book so thoroughly alongside making their own books! This weeks chapter focussed on the Scottish victory at the Battle of Bannockburn and the Declaration of Arbroath.
During Health, we have been looking at the growth of a foetus during pregnancy. Both classes loved looking at the comparison charts and finding out what fruit a foetus compares to each week. We had lots of excellent discussions about what babies can see/hear/do inside the mothers womb!

P7 Camp Carmondean
Our Primary 7s had an amazing day creating clay creatures in the woods , orienteering , assault course building and eating smores by our camp fire .
Good morning everyone,
We had a busy week in P2 last week and have been working very hard. We made the most of the nice weather and enjoyed our PE outside where we have been learning cricket skills. Our P2 sports day is on Thursday 10 June so please come to school wearing PE clothes and your house colours if possible. We can provide coloured bibs if you do not have anything so please do not buy anything new. Unfortunately parents/carers are not able to attend but we will make sure we take lots of photos and upload these to SeeSaw.
We have looked at Deserts as part of our social studies and have been researching Desert animals and plants. We are going to progress on to looking at other hot countries such as Australia.
In numeracy we are revising what we have learnt over the course of the year. This week we are focusing on addition and subtraction.
In Phonics we are looking at the ss/ll phonemes this week.
Last week we had great fun making up our own similies in Literacy. This week we are progressing on to explore metaphors.

Primary 6 have continued to work on our Titanic Project this week. We have started learning the key facts about the sinking. We have explored the mistakes which were made and how they led to the sinking of the ship. We have continued to read our novel Kaspar Prince of Cats and this week the family have arrived on the Titanic.
In maths we have been solving problems related to multiples and factors, we have also started learning how to calculate the area of a rectangle.
In writing we have started learning about the targets related to the recount genre.
Next week we have sports day on Wednesday morning and it would be great to see as many people as possible coming to school dressed in their house colours.
Our eco committee have working hard on ways to reduce waste in school. We are trying a new initiative called waste free Wednesdays and are encouraging our children to bring snacks and lunches which are not stored in single use plastic. We would be grateful of your support in encouraging your child to think of alternative ways to store snacks and lunches on that day.

Hello everyone!
It has been a very fun week in Primary 4.
We have been enjoying watching our class caterpillars continue to grow. They are getting really big now! We looked at photos that we took of them on Day 1 and Day 5 and the differences were incredible! We are looking forward to watching them transform again in the next week or so.
We have been continuing to read Charlotte’s Web in class. The children are really enjoying the novel and Mr Woodward and I are so pleased that so many children are volunteering to read aloud in front of the class. This week we learned about a miracle that happened on the farm. The children became news reporters, writing amazing reports about the miracle on Zuckerman’s Farm. Some of our roving reporters even included interviews with a main character in their newspaper report – amazing job Primary 4!
This week we drew our art topic on colours to a close by creating amazing insect art work. Last week each child sketched either a ladybird, a spider or a worm in pencil and then went over their lines in black pen. This week the children used poster paint to paint their insects lots of different colours. The children were only given the primary colours, white and black and they still managed to create the most amazing, multi-coloured insects through using their knowledge of primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Well done Primary 4!!
Our Primary 4 Sports Day took place yesterday. A huge thank you to Mrs Ferguson. Mrs Coulter and Miss Malloy who organised and ran the whole event which was a huge success! Thank you also to the Primary 7s who planned all of the events that the children took part in yesterday. All the children had a fantastic time. A special well done to SUTHERLAND who were the winning house (Miss Clark was especially happy as she is in Sutherland too!) All the points from each stage’s Sports Day will be added together and a final house winner will be revealed soon!
Homework is due in next Friday 11th June. This will be our last piece of homework in Primary 4. Reading books should also be returned to school by this date. Thank you for all the help and support you provide the children with, it is greatly appreciated it.
As the weather is becoming warmer we would like to go outdoors more with the children. Please ensure your child is wearing sun cream to school on hot, sunny days. We cannot apply this in school. Thank you.

Hello everyone,
What a busy week we have had in P3!
First of all, we just want to say a massive well done to all of the children for their efforts during this afternoon’s sports day which was led by our wonderful Mrs Ferguson and her team. The children (and teachers) had a great time. There were lots of different stations that the children participated in with other people in their house. It was a great afternoon and the sun was shining. There are pictures and videos on Seesaw for you to see. I will add more either later on this evening or at some point tomorrow.
We have been learning all about how to tell the time on an analogue clock this week in Maths. The children are becoming very familiar with o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to.
In Writing we wrote a recount of some of our favourite memories. We know that when we are writing a recount, we need to use the past tense.
Our moon topic is underway, and the children made some animations to show the phases of the moon. We will share these on Seesaw once they are finished.

What a hot and sunny week it has been!
This week in Writing the children wrote acrostic poems for a Top Secret Project. We had excellent discussions and brainstormed our ideas connected to our secret mission. The children worked hard on their poem, created some beautiful descriptions and the finished pieces of writing looked fabulous! We cannot to share them in the next few weeks!
During Health, we had lots of fun discussing our Birth Fact Files. The children had been tasked with finding out their full name, date and time of birth, where they were born and how much they weighed. They could also share any other interesting information about their birth! It was lovely to see all the cute baby photographs!
In Maths, both classes were working on measuring weight. We estimated the weight of household objects in grams and kilograms before using a variety of measuring scales to get the actual weight of each object. The children were surprised about how heavy/light some objects were; who knew a paperclip does not weigh one kilogram!
In Reading, we are continuing with our non-fiction text connected to our history topic; The Scottish Wars of Independence. This week we were investigating Robert the Bruce and how after the death of William Wallace he became Scotland’s new king. The children were fascinated by the story of Robert the Bruce and how the spider in the cave inspired him.
In numeracy P5G have been decimals and investigating the link with fractions. The children took to this new concept exceptionally well and were able to explain how to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa. Next week we will be looking at adding decimal numbers.
In PE all our practicing for the flash mob dance came to fruition. On Thursday filming of the P5 section of the flash mob took place and the children all danced very enthusiastically (even the adults managed it!). Look out for the video on the blog in the coming weeks!
On Thursday afternoon, we had lots of fun watching the auditions for the talent show. Some of the different acts were gymnastics, dancing, magic tricks, xylophone and trumpet playing, singing and stand-up comedy! We were blown-up away by the talent, and have two wonderful acts to represent P5 in the school wide Talent Show; Ayden and Monica the hilarious ‘Red Magicians’ from P5A and Sarah Kirk’s singing ‘1000 Years’ from P5B. Well done to all that auditions!
Next Thursday, P5 will have their Sports Day Events with Mrs Ferguson. Please come dressed for the weather and in your house colours! Hopefully next year we will be able to have spectators, however we will take plenty of photographs to post on the blog!

After many problems and long delays, our cycle and scooter rack project is now complete. From Monday the 7th of June, only children from P4 to 7 will be able to bring bikes and scooters to school. Those children who do, must park them in the new cycle and scooter racks and secure them with a proper cycle lock. Children will be instructed how to do this. From Monday, 07 June, unless children have a cycle lock then they cannot bring their bikes or scooters to school. Children in Primaries 1-3 should not bring bikes or scooters to school.
Primary 1 are having a fantastic week and enjoyed spending some time in the sunshine yesterday. It looks like the weather is going to continue to be hot this week. Please send your child to school with sun cream on when it is going to be sunny and feel free to provide a sun hat for their time outside.
Yesterday the children were very excited to film the end of year flash mob. We can’t wait to show you the finished video at the end of the school year. The children did a great job learning and performing the dance and we were very proud of them!
In phonics we are revising the sounds ee, oo and ai. The children are learning to read and write words with these letter sounds and are making great progress with this.
In maths we are learning to skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Here are some fun songs you might want to listen to at home to help practise:
In farming we are learning about livestock farms. The children will be thinking about the different animals which are found on a farm and about where their food comes from.

We’ve had another great week in primary 1!
Thank you to everyone that assisted us this week with our junk modelling scarecrows! We had a blast using lots of different recycled materials in creative ways to make our very own scarecrow. We used plant pots, bottles, cardboard, cloth, cardboard box packaging, glue and masking tape to create our models. The children were shown lots of examples but were challenged to do this independently. We had lots of fun doing this! We were also learning all about arable farms this week and were challenged to create our own arable farm maps and draw the food that is grown on this type of farm on a healthy food plate.
We were learning all about the ‘ai’ sound this week and created our own trains. We consolidated our coin recognition this week and were working out the change we would receive when paying for an item with 10p. We sorted coins into the correct category and we were challenged to use the correct change at our farm shop during play time.

Hi everyone!
We hope you all had a lovely long weekend. Primary 7 have been VERY busy this week!
First, we had some contact with the High School. We were invited to a call with Mr Small and the Heads of House where they introduced themselves and launched the fun House Challenge. Everyone found out which house they are in and have already made a fantastic effort to earn stars that will be turned into points. We then had another call with the English department for a Reciprocal Reading lesson. We focussed on predicting this week and everyone was very engaged. They left us on a cliffhanger so we cannot wait for our call next week!
As if that was not exciting enough, we also had our Sports Day this week! Despite a different set up this year, everyone still had a brilliant time and the rain stayed away (yippee!). The scores were extremely close in the end but Sutherland were the champions – well done to you all!
In between all of this, Primary 7 have been busy preparing for our Carnival that is fast approaching. We’ve also managed to squeeze in Maths, Literacy and World War 2 work too! P7M learned more about Anne Frank and tried to imagine how she felt when she went into hiding. In her diary, she told us what items she had chosen to pack so we thought about what three items we would have picked if we were in her position. Like Anne Frank, many chose things that would bring them comfort and help keep them entertained.

Another busy week of learning for P6!
In Topic we have been looking at food served on the Titanic at that time and designed our own menus including dishes such as: boiled hominy, sirloin steak and roasted duck (1st Class) oats were served in 3rd class and roast beef.
In Maths we were calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes, finding out the missing sides using the information given. In Numeracy we have been dividing decimals.
We continued looking at our body systems focusing on the respiratory and digestive system. The boys and girls were shocked to discover that the intestines length is more than 7 metres long and if you flattened your lungs they would take up the size of a tennis court!
In Art P6A finished their Space Art drawings. Photos below and we will post P6Bs once completed.
