P2 update 28.3.19

Hello!

We have an exciting few days in school before the holidays.  Today we are going to the P6/7 show dress rehearsal which we have heard is amazing!

Earth hour – wear something bright to school on Friday 29th March

To mark earth hour we have been talking about ways we can help to reduce our impact on our environment.  The children had lots of ideas including switching off lights, changing to paper or metal straws and picking up litter.  On Friday we will be switching our classroom lights off and the children are encouraged to wear something bright to school if they can.

Class trip

Our trip to the zoo is on Monday and we are looking forward to seeing some of the animals we have been learning about in class.  Please can you return the form if you haven’t already.  The children will need a packed lunch on the day if you haven’t ordered one from school.

Just in case we haven’t had enough of animals, we have a visitor coming into school on Tuesday who will be bringing in animals which live in hot and cold climates.  It’s going to be a very exciting start to the week!

Homework

The homework should be returned for sharing in school on Thursday 4th April. Thank you for supporting the children with their homework.  We enjoy seeing all their hard work when they share it.

Other reminders

Please remember PE kit on a Thursday and a water bottle every day.

Thank you!

Mrs Muir and Miss Rafferty

P2 update 21.1.19

We have had a busy few days since our last update.  In numeracy we’ve been continuing to work hard on addition sums with missing numbers and in maths we’ve started to learn how to tell the time in digital.  Why not ask your child if they can tell you the time in digital (half past or o’clock)? We have just started this and will continue learning about it over the next few weeks.

Wordboost

We have learned five new wordboost words this week.  Why not ask your child if they remember what they are and what they mean?

Science

In science we did an experiment to see where ice would melt fastest.  We placed four icecubes in different places and after making our predictions we checked how quickly they were melting and recorded our results.  We found that the ice cube on the windowsill melted quickest and the one in the freezer didn’t change at all!

We are continuing to learn about cold countries as part of our new topic and have drawn cold country landscapes with glaciers, mountains, tundra and northern lights.

Poems

We are really impressed with how well everyone has learned their poems.  Thank you for your support with this. Everyone will have the opportunity to perform their poem in front of the class on Wednesday and we will then choose two children from each class to perform in front of the school in the assembly on Friday.

Homework

We will be sharing homework in class on Thursday. Please can you make sure homework is completed and returned by then?

P2M assembly

Mrs Muir’s class assembly will take place on Tuesday 12th February and the children will come home with their lines shortly this week.

Miss Rafferty’s class assembly will take place a bit later on the 12th March.

Thank you for all your support,

Mrs Muir and Miss Rafferty.

P2 Post 8.1.19

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a lovely break over the holidays.  It was great to see all the children again yesterday and they all seemed very excited to be back with their friends.

New topic

We have a lot planned this term.  Our new topic is going to be ‘Hot and Cold Countries’ and we will be investigating why there are hot and cold climates, which animals live in hot and cold countries and looking at some of the geographical features of hot and cold climates.

Literacy

We have started a programme called Word Boost which has the aim of developing and expanding the children’s vocabulary.  Every week we will look at different interesting words which we call ‘boost’ words.  Why not see if your child can remember some of their ‘boost’ words?

Scottish poem

We will shortly send home a Scottish poem which the children will be learning to recite in class.  Please could you help your child to practise the poem at home?

Homework

Homework will be issued on Monday 14th but we have issued reading books this week.

Things to remember:

Indoor PE is on a Wednesday with the PE specialist and outdoor PE is on a Tuesday (Miss Rafferty’s class) and a Thursday (Mrs Muir’s class).  PE kit can be left in class from Monday – Friday if that is easier than remembering it on PE days.

Please ensure your child has a water bottle with them every day.

Thanks for all your support,

Mrs Muir and Miss Rafferty.

P2 update 20.11.18.

We had an exciting visit yesterday from PC McMann who told us all about his job.  Can you spot any young police officers you recognise in the photos below?

Tomorrow we are getting a visit from the fire service which we are looking forward to!  We will give you an update on how we got on soon.

We have been continuing to practise our Nativity and it is looking good.  Please can you keep helping with practising lines if your child has any.

We hope to see you tomorrow afternoon at the Read Write Count book event.

Thank you

Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir.

Primary 2 update

This week we are continuing practising our 1960s dance moves and the children will be putting together their own routines.  It’s sure to be lots of fun!

In maths we are working on really getting to know all the numbers which add together to make another number ( number bonds).  For example, the children will be trying to find all the possible numbers which add together to make 9 or 10.

In writing on Thursday we are going to be learning how to write a set of instructions for making a sandwich.  To help us, we will be making and tasting jam sandwiches.

Homework will be discussed and shared in class on Thursday so please could you make sure it is completed by then.  Reading books and homework jotters should be taken into class every day.

Thank you for your support in making sure the children have PE kit.  Indoor PE is on a Tuesday and outdoor PE is on a Wednesday (Miss Rafferty’s class) and a Thursday (Mrs Muir’s class).

Lastly please could you ensure the children bring water and not juice to school. Thank you.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the parents evenings next week,

Mrs Muir and Miss Rafferty.

P2 update

Hello

As we are getting nearer to the end of term we have lots going on.  On Friday this week we hope to see you during our open morning from 9.30- 10.30.  The children have been thinking about which job they would like to do when they are older and will show you what they have been working on.

As we will have a busy day on Friday we are going to have ‘Free Time Thursday’ tomorrow instead so children can bring in any toys they would like to play with.

We are hoping the sun will be shining on Tuesday 19th as it is our trip to the beach.  If you haven’t done so already please can you hand in the form and money for the trip as soon as possible.

Sports day is on Wednesday 20th in the afternoon and we hope to see you there.

Thank you,

Mrs Muir

P2 Update

On Monday we had a visit from Cool Creatures.  We had great fun meeting an armadillo, a bearded dragon, a skunk, a hedgehog, a meerkat and a huge python!

We’ve been practising hard for our assembly on Tuesday and look forward to seeing you there at 9.15am.

If your child doesn’t already know their lines please could you help them practise this weekend.

PE this term is Monday (outside) and Thursday (inside or outside). Please could you make sure your child has PE kit on these days.

Thank you for your support. Have a great weekend!

Mrs Muir

P2 update 20.4.18

It’s lovely to see the sun shining at last and we have taken advantage of it by taking our maths outside this week.  I’ve attached some photos of us measuring outside.  We had to find things which were taller or shorter than 1/2 metre.

Assembly

We hope you can come to our assembly on Tuesday 1 May at  9.15am.  A letter has been sent home – please can you complete the return slip to let us know how many people are likely to be coming?

PE

PE is on a Monday and Thursday.  Monday will always be outside (weather permitting) and Thursday could be outside or inside.  Please could everyone have appropriate PE kit for these days?

I hope you have a sunny weekend!

Mrs Muir

Primary 2

It has been a great first week back at school.  We’ve enjoyed hearing everyone talk about the models they made and have been learning lots from the facts they researched.

Livingston cricket club worked with the class in PE this week to teach them some skills.  Everyone got a leaflet home to find out more about coaching sessions at the club.

This term our PE will be on Monday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor) so please could you make sure your child has PE kit for those days.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Muir

P2 update 16 March

Hello,

It’s been another busy week in primary 2.  We’ve been continuing to explore cold countries and have created our own leaflets with information about animals which live in cold countries.  In maths we have been learning about sharing out items equally which is the start of work on division.

Sports Relief

Thank you for your support for Sports Relief.  There are still wrist bands available for £1 and raffle tickets (50p a strip) to win Craig McLean’s swimming cap and top.  Craig is a commonwealth swimmer and former Carmondean pupil who came to talk to all the pupils.  As part of Sports Relief all pupils are trying to run around Scotland.  P2 and P2/3 managed the equivalent of 35 miles this week just running around the playground.  It was fun but exhausting!

Lastly, please don’t forget the dress down day next Thursday (22nd) for Sports Relief.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Muir

Mrs Muir’s igloo

Here is a photo of the igloo we managed to build.  We had great fun pretending to be explorers!  There are two children hiding inside the igloo – can you see them both?  Our secret for making sure it didn’t fall down was to use a picnic table and to put the snow all around it.  I am sure the Inuits don’t use picnic tables when they build proper igloos!

Have fun and stay safe in the snow,

Mrs Muir

Primary 2 Snow Day 3 Update

Good morning everyone,

I hope you have been having fun in the snow. Thank you for sending in your photos Heather – I love your igloo!

With lots of help I managed to make a big igloo and I will post a photo shortly.

On Friday at school we normally practise our spelling words so please ask someone to read out your words while you write them down. Then try and write a sentence which includes some of your o_e words. You can write them in your homework jotter.

Please keep practising your number bonds (these are numbers which add together to make 10) so that you know them really well. We’ll play our number bond circle game when we are back at school and see what our time is after all your practising.

You could also ask an adult or big brother or sister to test you on your doubles. You can do this while playing outside!

If you have some inside time today it would be great if you could write a story about what you have been doing while off school. Try to use describing words.

I am looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Mrs Muir

Primary 2 Snow Day Update

Hello everyone,

I hope you are having a great time in the snow. I really enjoyed sledging and building igloos with my boys yesterday. Today I think we might try to build a bigger igloo.  Mrs Steel from P1/2 built a big igloo yesterday and when we are back at school I will show you photos of it. It is amazing!  Don’t forget to post a message or photo on the blog to let everyone know if you managed to build an igloo or a snow arctic fox.

World Book Day

Did you know that today is World Book Day? When you are having a break from the snow, why don’t you read your favourite book? You could even dress up as your favourite character or act out the book for your family. If you would like more ideas for World Book Day you can check out their website here:

http://www.worldbookday.com/

Arctic Exploring

This weather is great for imagining what an arctic explorer does. Wouldn’t it be easier to travel around with a sled and husky dogs? Think about what a polar explorer would be eating on an expedition and what do you need to eat to give you energy for all the snow activities you are doing?

Having so much snow is very unusual. If you can, please draw a picture of you in the snow or take a photo and post it on the blog. How deep is the snow today? Is it up to your knees or even deeper?

Yesterday I posted some ideas of activities you could do when you are off school. Remember you don’t have to do all of them. The most important thing is that you are enjoying the snow with your families.

Have fun and stay safe!

Mrs Muir

Primary 2 snow day activities

Good morning everyone! I hope you enjoy your day at home in the snow. Mr Shanks has posted a snow day booklet with lots of fun ideas for you to try. I have also included some activities below. You don’t need to do all of them of course but please try and do a few and you can tell everyone what you have been doing when we get back to school.

  1. Can you make an igloo out of the snow just like the ones we have been learning about in our hot and cold countries topic? Maybe you could make one for one of your toys. If you can, you can take a photo of it and post it to the blog.
  2. Instead of a snowman you could try making a ‘snow polar bear’ or ‘snow arctic fox’!
  3.  Practise your doubles and number bonds using this link:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Doubles: click on ‘doubles’ then ‘1-10’. Number bonds: click on ‘number bonds’ then practise up to 10. Once you are really fast at up to 10 you can move on to up to 20.

4. Have fun writing your spelling words in the snow.

5. Make a poster which includes your spelling words – you can include bubble writing and decorate your words

6. Enjoy reading your book and looking for some of the sounds we have been learning.

7.  Think about all the describing words you can to describe what the snow looks like.

Have lots of fun and stay safe. See you soon,

Mrs Muir.

P2 update

The children are really enjoying our current topic of Hot and Cold countries.  We’ve looked at which clothes an explorer would need in a cold country, have made our own passports, and today we made pencil drawings of a cold landscape.

In maths we’ve been working on doubles and near doubles.  Why not ask your child to tell you the double of a number? With near doubles we are using our doubles knowledge to help us work out sums which are almost doubles.  For example 6+7 would be worked out using our double 6 knowledge as 6+6+1.

PE is still on Monday (outside) and Wednesday (inside) so please ensure your child has PE kit for those days.

Thanks,

Mrs Muir

Primary 2

This Friday we’ll be having a Valentine’s Dress Down Day where children can make a donation and wear something Valentine themed.  Don’t worry if you don’t have anything with hearts – pink or red will do!

PE continues to be on a Monday (outdoors) and Wednesday (indoors).  Please can you make sure your child has their PE kit.  It can be left in school from Monday to Wednesday if that is easier.

Don’t forget we have no school on Monday and Tuesday next week.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday and Thursday at parents evenings.

Thanks

Mrs Muir

P2M Burns Day update 25.1.2018

Happy Burns Day!  We’ve been celebrating today by designing our own tartan and tasting haggis and oatcakes.  Lots of the children had never tasted haggis before but they were very good at trying it and many of them loved it!

Well done to all of the children who recited their poems confidently in front of the class.  Congratulations to Ellie and Mya who will be performing their poems in front of the school at our Burns Day assembly tomorrow. We know it takes a lot of work to learn the poems and that the children couldn’t do this without your help at home so thank you!

Mrs Muir

Primary 2 update

We’ve had a very exciting week as on Monday the school had a visit from a real explorer!  Craig the explorer told us all about his expeditions to the South and North poles and some of the children got to try on the clothes he wears and sample some of the food he eats.  We’ve been very inspired by his visit and have carried out lots of science experiments during the week.  The children loved making their own boats from plasticine  and trying to work out the best design to ensure their boats floated.  Yesterday, working in pairs, the children researched and designed an underwater exploration vehicle.  It has been great fun!

Homework:

Just a reminder to ask your child to try and read the words in the blue word book.  Every week we will stick in new words and it would be great if you could sign the book to say they have been practised.  Thank you for your help with this.

On Tuesday next week the children will recite their Scottish poem in class.  We’ve been practising these in school and I know that you have been practising them at home – thank you.

PE

Outdoor PE is on a Monday and indoor PE is on a Wednesday.  Please could you make sure your child has PE kit for those days (they can leave it in school if you prefer and take it home at the end of the week).

Also please can you make sure your child has indoor shoes for school.

Thanks so much for your support.

Mrs Muir

Primary 2 update 13.12.17

Today was our dress rehearsal for the Nativity and it went really well.  You will be in for a treat next Wednesday if you can come and see it.  If you haven’t already got your tickets please contact the office.

Tomorrow is a dress down day and children can come to school dressed in something Christmassy or with a Christmas accessory (for example Christmas jumpers, onesies, hats, scarfs or reindeer headbands). There is a suggested donation of 50p for anyone who wishes to take part.

Party

It’s our P2 party on Friday.  The children can come to school dressed in their party clothes.

PE

Our outdoor PE day is still Monday but our indoor PE day has changed to Wednesday.  Children can leave their PE in school from Monday to Wednesday if that is easier.

Thank you

Mrs Muir
