Another ‘Gold’ winning performance from the school choir.
All pupils performing this week have been excellent ambassadors for the school.

Bell’s Brae Traditional Band played three tunes and were awarded ‘Gold’.

I am pleased to be able to provide you with the times when your child will be performing at the Music Festival. All events will take place in Mareel and the entry is free.

Pupils to meet and register with teachers at Mareel. Bell’s Brae staff will be at Mareel in the foyer from 08:40. Pupils are to go to Mareel and register with their teacher no later than 08:50 as our P7 classes are performing first in the group. (see seperate letter for more info) |
Music instructors will be contacting parents/carers to notify them of times for solos and duets. On Tuesday 13 March pupils and staff will be walking to and from Mareel so pupils should ensure that they are wearing suitable footwear and clothing. Can pupils please wear white (or light) tops and black or navy trousers.
We strongly advise that all choir members have a good breakfast on Tuesday morning before their performance. Children should never sing on an empty stomach.
P4S Read, Write, Count
Pupils in P4S have been enjoying the new Read, Write, Count initiative. Each week they take home a folder with a piece of equipment or a book and an activity card. It’s amazing how much they have achieved! Some have used the scales and measuring jugs to help bake cakes, while others have been counting their steps with pedometers or playing dice and card games. They’ve written stories and produced amazingly detailed drawings, carefully labelled. They’ve had books to show them how to draw in a particular style or teach a bit about history, or just a good old yarn to fire the imagination.
It’s fantastic to see how much fun they’ve had reading, writing and counting with their families at home.
Euroquiz 2018
Pupils from Primary 6 recently took part in the annual Euroquiz competition at Islesburgh Community Centre. The event encourages children to broaden their knowledge of Europe, including subjects such as history, geography, sport, culture, languages, and the European Union.
The Euroquiz is open to P6 pupils from all over Scotland, and this year 12 teams participated in the Shetland heat. The representatives from Bell’s Brae performed brilliantly (often out-scoring the teachers in attendance!) and only narrowly lost out in the final round.

Safety Outside School Campaign
The Shetland Islands Council and Police Scotland are running a Shetland wide campaign this week to promote safety outside of schools. As part of their campaign they have spoken to P4-7 pupils at assembly, handed out leaflets to families and erected banners outside of schools.
A number of schools have also had small characters outside encouraging parents/carers not to park on yellow or zig zag lines.
We are really grateful to all parents/carers for supporting this campaign and parking safely around the school. The photograph below was taken at 3pm on Monday 5 March. The Crossing Patrol Attendant and pupils couldn’t believe the difference this made to their safety as they crossed the road. They could easily see any vehicles coming.
P7S trip to the Shetland Museum and Archives
P7S went to visit the Shetland Museum last Wednesday. They were shown some exhibits from Shetland during WWII in the display cabinet and also had the chance to make peg dolls after thinking about the ‘Make Do And Mend’ policy, of making the best use of materials at the time.
P7S are also very busy making Anderson Shelters at the moment as part of our WWII topic. So far this has involved a great deal of problem solving – and fun!
