P7 CWGC visitor

This afternoon P7 had a visit from Patricia Keppie who works for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission are responsible for maintaining the war graves and cemeteries in this country and abroad. The pupils were very interested in the topic and it built on previous learning from our WW2 topic.

P5s visit the Shetland Times

On Thursday, P5s went to visit the Shetland Times.  We had a fantastic trip and really enjoyed being shown all the steps in publishing the local newspaper.

Not only did we watch how they loaded the machines full of newspaper ready for printing we also got to have a look at all the other machines they have in the building.  We learned all about the other types of products that they can produce including our very own recipe book.

A big thank you to the staff at the Shetland Times for making time for our visit and also for providing all the children with a mock up front page of the paper to take home.

The recipe book is currently in production and should be ready before the summer holidays.  There will be some extra copies available to buy from the school office at a cost of £6 each.

Leading Learning in Lerwick’s Primary Schools

Leadership Matters is a week of events and activities, organised by NHS staff exploring what leadership is and means for all our communities in Shetland.  As part of this week our learners were asked to present how they demonstrate leadership in their schools.

We are extremely proud of how well they have worked with others. You can view their impressive presentation skills in the attached clip.

Sports Day

It will come as no surprise to hear that we have to postpone the P4-7 Sports Day.  A future date will be confirmed later today.

A decision about the P1-3 Sports Day will be made at 1100.  The forecast is for it to dry up.

A busy time outdoors!

Primary 2s have been very busy outdoors this week! On Tuesday we travelled up to Sandness, with Primary 2n, to Transition Turriefield where we got to see lots of different plants and vegtables growing.   We also got to see ducks, ducklings and horses! We then planted some mixed salad and handled worms! We had a great day all round!

Today we were very excited to release our butterflies in Mrs Evans’s garden! We thought it would be a good idea to place them on flowers, so that there is nectar ready for them! We have had great fun watching our caterpillars go through their lifecycle these past few weeks.

Primary 5 coding

As part of our ICT lessons over the last few weeks, some of the P5 pupils kindly agreed to share their knowledge on coding using a programme Scratch with both Primary 5 classes.

They started each session by doing some direct teaching using the interactive whiteboards in the classroom.  The pupils then used the ICT suite where they have been responsible for their own group of pupils to help them learn how to code their own computer programme.

All the pupils have been really engaged and love using Scratch and it has been excellent to see the children sharing their own knowledge and skills with their peers and taking ownership over their learning.
