We have had a busy first 2 weeks in Primary 1. We are working on developing our fine motor skills prior to writing. We have taken part in a range of fun activities to practise using our dominant hand and assisting hand; using a tripod grip; controlling small tools etc.
Yesterday we made pancakes to practice using measuring equipment independently – electronic scales and measuring jugs – and to show we could follow instructions successfully.
We followed a recipe in small groups and Miss Henry didn’t even need to help us! It was great practice for Secondary 1 Home Economics at the Anderson High School, which lots of us are very much looking forward to.
Most importantly they tasted delicious.
Jess and Johnny (Pupil Council Vice Chair and Chair Person) were busy yesterday giving our benches a new lease of life with paint the Pupil Council bought from Frank Williamson. They particularly enjoyed wearing their overalls! 🙂
The school received a donation of 4 large tyres! The Pupil Council were asked if they could make use of them for the school. We decided to paint them and make them into planters for the school grounds.
Johnny and Jess (PC Chair and Vice Chair) wrote letters to local businesses asking for advice on which type of paint to use for the job.
Malakoff Ltd very kindly donated paint for the tyres and super advice on what to do with them. We are very grateful for their help as we are on a tight budget. We went along on Thursday to thank them and accept their kind donation.
Each term, Primary 7N and Primary 7S are mixed into cooperative learning groups to carry out research projects. This term, we started off with some team building activities to get to know each other a little better. Groups were tasked with building a tall, stable, strong tower using only masking tape and newspapers. Here are some pictures of the building in action!
P7N have been working on their gymnastics in the gym these last few weeks and have had lots of fun! This week, moved around the different pieces of equipment using a combination of rolling, balancing and jumping.
P7N were very lucky to have a visit from Emma Chittock from Skills Development Scotland. Emma came to teach us how to program Lego robots using i Pads. It was fascinating!
We were delighted to have visiting Scotland coach Leighanne Carragher up coaching us alongside Sound Primary After School Netball Club. She was very inspiring and motivating!
The girls learned new skills as well as having a lot of fun learning new ball drills and playing games.
We were so lucky to have Island Medic’s star and parent of a pupil in P7, Mrs Williamson, come in to visit P7n and P7s classes today.
Mrs Williamson gave us a really interesting insight into her role as an A&E nurse at the Gilbert Bain. Primary 7 had prepared questions to ask her both about her job and the TV programme which has been really popular. Following the visit, many pupils showed an interest into a career in the National Health Service.

Primary 7N have also been busy creating their own board games, with instructions, in cooperative learning groups. They were inspired by their class novel – “The Brilliant World of Tom Gates” by Liz Pichon. Pichon uses lots of doodle cartoons and calligrams to make her stories even more interesting. P7N used these techniques on their board games to make them really eye catching and quirky.
We had a really fun afternoon playing our completed board games.
