Today was Roald Dahl Day.

We are writing stories for a Roald Dahl competition and we continued working on these today by editing our writing to make it as few words as possible so that we don’t go over the 250 word limit.

Today we were practising letter formations, sizing and revising our joins. Many of us have seen an improvement since last week. We were also looking at the rules for plurals with not an apostrophe in sight!!!!! Then we used regular and irregular 2D shapes to design our own places- some of them are really creative and interesting.

This afternoon we were sharing our thoughts about truth and honesty and all agree that in the long run, honesty is the best policy.

Our topic is on insects, with a main focus on bees and other pollinators. We will be delivering an assembly on this topic at the end of October. As part of this assembly, we will be exploring the anatomy of different insects.

For homework, you can make a model of an insect. This can be out of cardboard, paper, wood, plastic – whatever you can find at home! Size doesn’t matter – it can be big, small or medium.

You have two weeks to do this homework.

 

Maths

Now that we are confident with understanding what decimals mean, reading them and putting them in order, it is time to start practicing how to add and subtract them.

We also need to revise our number bonds up to 10, 20, 100 and 1000 so that we can use these to help us add and subtract decimals.

For homework

• Go shopping and add up the price of the items as you walk around. See how close you are at the till.
• Time yourself doing the following activities and add the times together including the tenths. If you are confident, include the hundreths and thousandths of a second.
• Create a poster to show your number bonds to 10, 20, 100 or 1000. Include a few quiz questions with missing number for a partner.

Language

We are finally ready to write the main story for the Roald Dahl competition. In reading, we are continuing to work on taking notes and then applying them to visualisations of the text. We are also exploring questions about the text.

For homework.

• Write a full version of your Roald Dahl story. The competition entry is limited to 250 words, but you have characters and a setting which can be made into a full story.
• Write notes about something interesting you do outside school and draw a visualisation. Eg dancing, football training, birthday party, playing with friends, visiting someone.

This morning we were able to identify mistakes!

The teacher put up decimals in order of biggest to smallest on the maths wall, but he made mistakes on purpose! However, we spotted it and fixed it for him!

 

We have started recording our learning in a big book. We started with “our favourite numbers” and “information about our reading books”.

In maths we were again recording and explaining by creating decimal booklets with all the information we know about decimals.

Finally in art with Mrs McMillan we were looking at stippling, smudging, shading and crosshatching. We are going to apply these to drawing pictures of insects.

 

Today we were learning how to write computer code using the website www.code.org

 

This is fun for adults too so I recommend going on it with your children and learning some yourself.

We had to make sure to read all of the words on the screen so that we didn’t miss any information or instructions. We then created our own instructions and found mistakes where we could.

 

With Mrs Dickson we were creating a banner for outside the door of the classroom. We wrote an acrostic poem about PRIMARY 7 to brighten up the outside of the room.

 

In maths, we continued to learn about ordering decimals and we are super confident!

This morning in maths, we were learning how to organise decimals into biggest to smallest.

We had to organise ourselves without knowing what our number was and without talking to each other.

Top tips include

count the digits (but not the decimal digits)

If the number of digits are the same, then look at the digit with the highest value

If all the numbers on the left of the decimal place are the same, then look at the tenths,

If these are the same, then look at the hundredths.

 

Remember, next Tuesday is the Roald Dahl 100th birthday day.

You can dress up as any Roald Dahl character for the day!

In ICT today we were researching using the internet. we were able to research the life cycle of a honey bee and then we applied our previous learning about inserting tables on MS word to this information to make a life cycle table.

 

In Language we were applying our previous learning about organising and taking notes to the skill of visualisation.

We were recording notes about the setting of the story and tomorrow we will use the notes to help us make a detailed picture of what we see in our mind.

We are learning to take notes and to organise them. We are also exploring the shapes of our spelling words. In writing we are planning a story inspired by Roald Dahl for a competition.

For homework:

• Watch a TV show/movie and take notes. Organise the notes into sections eg main characters, main events, interesting features, setting.
• Draw the shape of spelling words. Colour the tall letters green, the letters below the line yellow and the normal letters blue.
• Watch the news and take notes about a story.

We are planning a topic about insects. We are going to learn about their anatomy, their habits, their lifestyle and where they live.

For homework

• Write down questions you would like to know the answer to about insects. (aim for at least 6)
• Research your favourite insect and draw a picture of their body.

We have had a busy day learning about possessive apostrophes, reminding ourselves of the properties of 3D shapes and French greetings. Finally we were talking about our emotions and how they can change quickly. Welcome to the world of rampaging hormones!!
