Monday 13th November

This morning we were planning our Christmas Fayre business. We identified which products we would need to make the following items:

Reindeer poop

Snowman poop

Baa Humbugs

We then used online shopping to research the best prices and made sure that we were comparing the prices for the same amount and weight of product – “how much does it cost for 100g?”

We were able to find out the following prices – if you can find them cheaper, let us know and we will save more money!

if you want to test your times tables in preparation for our new maths topic, you can try this online test!

Homework week beginning 13th October

Homework week beginning 13th November

Language

We are continuing to work on our retrieving and detective skills and putting them together. We are retrieving important parts of the story and we are detecting extra information from the text using inference. This means that you “read between the lines”.

To help us develop our inference skills, we are going to explore idioms. An idiom is a phrase that has extra meaning. It is similar to a metaphor which we learned about last week.

Explain what the following idioms mean:

Can’t judge a book by it’s cover

Pull up your socks

A penny for your thought

Back to the drawing board

The ball’s in your court

No use crying over spilt milk

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Hit the nail on the head.

Can you think of any other examples that you have heard?

Optional extra homework – choose your favourite TV show or movie and summarise an episode. Record all the important events that happen, introduce the characters and give me your opinion about the story.

Maths

We are starting a new topic of multiplying and dividing. We are going to look at exactly how we build up our times tables, the links between the times tables and how this links to division.

We need constant practice with our times tables so our homework is a times table grid.

We are also planning our own business for the Christmas Fayre and we have been researching prices for the products we are selling. If you can beat the prices we found online (see below), let us know and we will make even more profit!

Optional homework – make up your own times table song using your favourite song.

HWB

Interview someone about how they stay safe online. You can plan questions before you do the interview and record the interview in your jotter, or use the voice memos app or video the interview. Ask them about how they protect their own personal information and about how they make sure they are in control of what they see online.

We have being learning how to use homophones correctly

We have being writing a  letter to Amber Rudd to persuade her that vulnerable children around the world do not have their rights in the same as that we do. We think that the uk should be doing more to protect children from areas where their lives have been seriously affected by war.

After lunch we were filming more of our qhubeka promotional video. Today was the bike race part of the video

these children are going super fast and they are pushing themselves.

after break We were also doing so showcase work and we were showing our teacher the best we can do with rounding,adding/subtracting and finding the differences. We were doing our best work and we cant wait to show miss Ferguson.

Then after showcase we then try some English in our showcase jotter.

here are some pictures of children’s amazing work for tricky words.

then after lunch we had a special visitor from Clarkson primary school to come and see how we do our focus learning.

We are developing our ability to talk about what we have learned in school.

If you want to ask your children questions about what they learned, instead of “how was school” you can try the following.

  • What was your favourite part of school today?
  • Did you find anything tricky?
  • What are you proud of that you achieved in school today?
  • What skills did you develop today in school?
  • Did you work with a partner on any learning today?
  • What would you like to do more practice with?
  • What are your next steps for tomorrow?
  • What are your top tips from your learning today?

Give them a try

Homework week beginning 6th November

Language

Our spelling words this week are use the prefix “pre”.

Test someone at home with these words.

pressure

present

pretzel

premature

presentation

preparation

president

We are also working on our detective skills with reading. This means that we are looking for evidence in the text and predicting what is going to happen next in the book.

For homework, continue the “Stormbreaker” story. Alex has escaped from the people trying to kill him and the Stormbreaker is about to come online. What will Alex do? Maximum 100 words – you need to say a lot with few words.

Optional homework – young writers ‘competition.

Maths

We have covered lots of different ways to add and subtract and this week we are focusing on rounding one number and adjusting the sum. This makes it easier to add and subtract.

A real life example of when you would do this is when you are doing your shopping – you round the numbers when you are picking your shopping so that you get an estimate of what your total will be.

For homework – go shopping and round all of the items you are buying and add them together as you shop. When you get the final bill at the checkout, find out what the difference between the two totals was.

IDL

Remembrance Day is this weekend. We have been exploring the meaning of Remembrance Day and the symbolism of the poppy. In World War 1 and other wars, many soldiers who did brave things were given medals. This is a great honour. For homework, design your own medal for bravery during the war. This could include a poppy as a symbol.

7th November 2017

With Mrs Rutherford, we were learning how to create pop music using synthesizers.

She showed us a weather forecast remix which we attempted to do our own version of.

In language we were learning to continue a story using our previous knowledge about the main characters to make sure our story made sense.

We made a plan about the personality of the main characters, then we continued the story.

In maths we were learning to use a number line for adding up money and for finding the difference between two numbers.

After we had finished our world war letters we put wet tea bags on it and it made them make it old. Here is a picture of lexi and her letter.

After lunch we started maths. In maths we started adding and subtracting with rounding. we were learning to round to help us answer calculations. We also used empty number lines to round the numbers to the nearest ten.You round to the nearest 10 by if it is 5 or above you got to the nearest ten if it is 4 or below you go to the smaller ten.We added in decimals as well.

we got given price lists and to take money off.
