Well done to everyone who completed last week’s sumdog spelling challenge. This week is a focus specifically on this week’s spelling words, but if you want to keep practicing spelling, sumdog is  a great way of doing it. This week’s sumdog spelling challenge is to correctly answer 30 questions. All ending in –ate.

Comprehension

Comprehension is a key reading skill, especially using an unfamiliar text that you haven’t seen before.

Remember to read the whole text first and then scan for key words from the question in the text to help find the answer. Write full answers using words from the question and the text.

information handling

This week, we will focus on information handling. This is a skill you will need for life and work. Accessing and making sense of information helps you to understand things better, helps you to make informed decisions and helps you to form your own opinions about things.

This page is all about a database. The database is showing information about different insects. The key at the top tells you what information the database contains.

For example, what habitat the animal lives in or what their danger level is.

 

Extra challenge = make your own database about an animal and write a few questions for a friend.

Part of your spelling challenge this week has been “homophones”. Homophones are words that are spelled differently, but sound the same.

Maths

Final measuring lesson this week is on time.

Have a go at this excellent time measuring game. It will help you to work on understanding units of time and how long has elapsed.

Here is a time measuring challenge for you – estimate how long it will take you to do the following things, then test it.

  • Take off your shoes and socks and put them back on as well as tie your laces.
  • Walk 1 km (you can use a tracking app like strava to follow this)
  • Make a cup of tea for someone in your house
  • Read 2 pages of a book
  • Play a level on your favourite game
  • Do your favourite dance from start to finish
  • Clean your room

Take a moment…

…to enjoy a Sunshine Meditation.

Hasn’t the weather been beautiful over the last few weeks? I hope you’ve been able to enjoy the lovely sunny days, even if it’s just been through your window!

In this week’s meditation we imagine the sunshine on our skin, filling us with light and warmth. It can be used to help you feel refreshed, energised and ready to face the day ahead so it’s great to do in the morning before you start your home learning!

(When I was a wee girl and couldn’t sleep, my mum used to do this kind of meditation with me to help me nod off and it worked for that too!)

I hope the sun comes back soon but remember to stay safe in the sunshine . Why not make a poster to remind your family of sun safety? I’d love to see your posters too!

Verbs

A verb is a doing word –  something that you can do e.g. run, jump, smile.

A special type of verbs is called a “modal Verb”. This is a word that change the meaning of the rest of the sentence.

For example might, should, must, can.

Measure

Today we are going to focus on measuring length.

 

We use different units to measure things – imperial and metric.

Imperial measurements for length are inches, feet and miles. They are more confusing and awkward because the numbers aren’t in 10s. For example, there are 12 inches in a foot.

Metric measurements are easier, because they are in 10s, 100s and 1,000s.

 

1cm = 10mm

1m = 100cm

1 km = 1,000m

 

Can you find a measuring tape or ruler in your house? Look at it. It probably has both imperial and metric measurements on it. Check carefully.

Today’s task is to hunt for things of different lengths. Can you find somethings that is:

  • 1cm long
  • 1 inch long
  • 1mm long or wide
  • 1m long
  • 25 mm long
  • 1 foot long (12 inches)
  • 6 inches long

Today we have another fluency challenge for you. In school, we had been working on reading for an extended period of time – the target was 20 minutes. Find yourself a book, website or anything that you enjoy reading and try and read without stopping or getting distracted for 20 minutes. This is like going to the gym for your reading skills.

Synonyms and antonyms

Have a look at this lesson on synonyms and antonyms. These are an important part of language that we need to be able to recognise and use.

When you have finished the lesson, read the next few pages of Holes and see if the author has used any synonyms or antonyms well to make the language interesting.

 

Maths

Today we are going to look at capacity and volume. These are measure words used to describe liquid.

Capacity is the MAXIMUM amount of liquid something can hold. This is when the container is completely full and no more liquid can be added.

Volume is the amount of liquid inside something. This could be when a bottle is half full or ¼ full or completely full, it doesn’t matter.

Try this game to help you read scales for volume and capacity.

Let’s apply this learning to real life. Create your own drink using liquids you find around the house, write down the recipe and give it a name.

If you want to try mine, it is called the “Summer blast” and has the following ingredients:

  • 200ml orange juice.
  • 20ml lime juice
  • one apple
  • 5 raspberries
  • 5 ice cubes
  • Tsp honey

Blend it all up until it is smooth and drink in the sun.

Instead of spelling words this week, I have set you a spelling challenge on sumdog. You need to answer 100 questions correctly this week. That’s just 20 words a day! Don’t forget to choose spelling when you log in.

Try this game and choose the level with kg, mm, cm or ml. This will help you understand some more about different units of measurement.

1kg = 1,000g

1m = 100cm

Reading scales can be tricky, because they look quite different to each other sometimes. The best thing to do is to count the SPACES between numbers, not the lines. Then work out using division, how much each space is worth. Try this game to explore reading scales.

Now we should apply what we have learned! Baking bread is easy and is a great activity to do with others at home. I have been making sourdough bread this week and it turned out great (see below). Writing a letter or email is a key skill.

At this time it is extremely important to focus on positives and telling someone you appreciate them can have a very positive impact on them. Taking five minutes to tell someone thank you for something they have done for you, no matter how simple, can really make them feel appreciated and help them to understand how important they are.

Have a look at this lesson, then write a thank you letter or email to someone who has helped you or done something for you or someone you appreciate. Send it to them and you will make them happy during this tough time.
