Wednesday 22nd April

Wednesday 22nd April

Language

Let’s warm up today by practicing our handwriting or typing. Write or type this week’s spelling or modern languages words 5 times each. You could also have a go on typeracer to develop your typing and spelling skills.

Main task

We have worked hard this year on analysing a piece of text, then evaluating it.

Remember:

Analysing is when you say what the text is made up of e.g. characters, phrases, setting, events

Evaluating is when you say if it is good or not and why.

Here is another great online lesson with some great passages of text for you to explore and evaluate.

Maths

Sumdog challenge! For 1 hour today, there will be a Primary 7 sumdog challenge. Compete against each other from 11 until 12 and see who can get top spot at the end of it. Good luck.

Here is a maths comprehension as well if you would like some more maths for today.

Language

Spelling/French

Write your words out and stick them up around the house so that you see them when you walk around. This will help you remember them!

Main task

Nouns and Pronouns. A noun is a person, place or a thing. You can touch it or go to it or use it. A Pronoun is a word that you use to take the place of the name of a noun e.g. this, it, he she, that.

Try a few of these Fractions, Decimals and Percentages games.

Main task

yesterday’s answers

Today we are going to focus on equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are the same size e.g. ½ and 2/4 and 3/6. To make a new equivalent fraction, we look at how much you need to multiply the bottom number by to get the bottom number of the next fraction and then do the same thing with the top number. We can also look at an equivalent fraction wall.

Tomorrow we will be doing a live sumdog Primary 7 competition from 11 until 12.

Monday 20th April 2020

Welcome back to school (kind of)! Hope everyone is okay and ready to keep going with some sort of routine. There will continue to be maths and language every day on the blog as well as the work you were given out before Easter, if you prefer to do that. You can all do Sumdog maths and spelling, IDL cloud or Active Learn everyday as well to keep your mind sharp.

Top tips for home school:

  • Get up and start early
  • Plan your breaks
  • Exercise every day
  • Learn things you like to learn the most

Language

Main task

Comprehension

Maths

Warm up = sumdog fractions assessment.

We are going to revise fractions, decimals, percentages. A fraction, decimal and percentage all represent part of something.

Go on this website to recap fractions, decimals and percentages. There is a quick quiz at the bottom.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/decimal-fraction-percentage.html

Look around your house and see how many Fractions, Decimals and percentages you can find in 10 minutes. Write them all down and talk about what they mean/represent to someone at home or someone else in the class.

Main task

Have a look at this work card. Answer the questions and I will put up the answers tomorrow!

Great job getting back into a routine. Keep working and hopefully things will be back to normal as soon as is safe.

Any questions, let me know.

Friday 3rd April

Literacy

Possessive apostrophe game

Writing

Write your fantasy story.

This could be done in many different ways

  1. Write it out on paper
  2. Create a comic strip
  3. Act it out with toys and create a stop motion/video to show the main events of the story.

Spelling

Get someone else to test you on this week’s spelling words. This could be someone in your house or someone else in the class via video call.

Maths

Warm up = play a game of battle ships with a partner. This helps us to practice our co-ordinates skills.

Main task – coordinates

Enjoy your Easter Holiday. We all need to rest and relax at this time and it is essential you take a break. Well done for all the hard work over the last few weeks and for putting in great effort.

Thursday 2nd April

Literacy

Warm up task = read a news website e.g. dogo news, newsround, bbc news and take notes about a story.

Main task

Today we are going to plan the setting and characters for a fantasy story which we will write tomorrow.

You need a main character who has the following

  • Special features e.g. ability to fly.
  • A quest – what is their purpose in the story e.g. are they trying to save someone from an evil character?
  • A weakness e.g. scared of heights

You also need an evil character for the main character to go on a quest against.

Draw a picture of each character, plan at least 5 wow words for each character.

Extra challenge = plan idioms, personification, onomatopoeia for each character.

You also need to design a setting/fantasy world. You can base this on real life or make it up completely.

Some examples of great fantasy writing are The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. You could read/watch these to get your ideas going.

Handwriting/typing = write out this week’s spelling words in joined writing. Type them out as many times as you can in 5 minutes or play type racer.

Maths

Warm up  = sumdog 15 minutes

Main task

I can plot coordinates accurately

I can go along before I go up

Extra challenge = can you draw out these coordinates and see what picture it creates?

Word problem of the day

I drive for 2 hours. I am driving at 30 mph average speed. I then speed up and drive at 40 mph for one hour and 60 mph for half an hour.

How far have I driven?

Top tip = 1 hour at 30 mph is 30 miles. Half an hour at 30 mph is 15 miles because 15 is half of 30

Wednesday 1st April

Literacy

Warm up = sumdog spelling 15 minutes

Main task – comprehension

I can use words from the text and question in my answer.

I can scan the text for information for my answer

Apostrophe

Possessive apostrophes are used to show who owns something.

e.g. Steven’s t shirt

Sometimes, the person who owns something has a name that ends in s e.g. James owns the football.

In this case you can either do James’ or James’s

Write 5 sentences with possessive apostrophes and make sure that at least 2 of them have names that end in s.

Maths

Warm up = coordinates game

https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/click-coordinate.html

play this coordinates game ^^^

main task

I can plot coordinates accurately

I can go along before I go up

Word problem of the day

I start at (3,4) and I move six places to the right. I then move two down. Where am I?

Now I move 4 to the left and 9 up. Then another 3 to the right and 1 down. Where am I now?

How do I get back to (3,4)?
