Focused learning and Maths!

This morning in maths we were exploring the different ways we could find fractions, decimals and percentages of amounts.

We had our second week of focused learning as well!

This week, we took on the advice from the people who did that station last week to improve and also identified even more areas for improvement.

No homework this week!

However, the next section of ww2 that we will be looking at is the main events during 1941, in particular Pearl Harbour and the German invasion of Russia.

Here are some websites to show the basic overview of main events in 1941 (and beyond)

Visit from the High School Modern Languages and Science department

Today we had two different visits.

First was from the Science department to tell us about the Science fair which is on 22nd March (I think – I will double check the date) at 7pm.

Here is a great website for ideas.

The children have been challenged to perform a science experiment at home and then write up the experiment to display at the science fair.

His suggestions were to test something to do with food and to not do a volcano or rocket ship!

He also suggested filming the experiment to display in case it doesn’t work on the day!

Finally the High school have equipment which can be borrowed eg thermometer, beakers, UV beads etc.

There will be prizes as well!

Two modern language students came up to teach us about different languages that we can study in High School.

High School Technical challenge

Today Some students went to the High School to represent woodlands in a technical challenge.

They created a catapult and also a banner with the Woodlands Motto!

Language

We are in the process of writing our fantasy stories. To get a clear picture in our minds of what is going to happen, draw 3 pictures to show the 3 most important events in your fantasy stories.

Extra challenge – create 3 similes to describe the pictures.

Maths

We are going to be learning about how to calculate percentages of amounts.

Try and find percentages in real life eg in a shop for reductions in prices, on TV in adverts.

Target is to find at least 3 different percentages.

Extra challenge – work out what amount the percentage is equal to.

World War 2

find out the answer to the following questions about “The Battle of Britain”

  1. where did it take place?
  2. How many planes were involved?
  3. how many British planes were destroyed?
  4. How many German planes were destroyed?
  5. who won?

Extra challenge – write a poem about WW2 – you could choose a specific events or person or country which was involved in WW2 or you could write an acrostic poem about WW2

More WW2 photos and a special visitor

Catherine brought in these brilliant World War 2 photos of her great uncle.

This photograph shows him getting married in 1942 right in the middle of the war.

It must have been an exciting time as well as very worrying.

We had visitors from the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth care charity today.

They collect uniforms, clothes, prams etc which are unwanted and give them to parents in need in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area.

They shared information about how running a charity is like running a business and how much time and effort they spend but also how rewarding it is.

Thanks very much!

We also finally started writing our stories! We have been planning them for ages and we are going to be working very hard over the next week to create a superb piece of writing.

And finally, the Phizz Wizzing Words books arrived! It contains stories by children from our class and also stories and poems from other schools across the UK.
