Congratulations to all our staff and pupils on achieving cycle-friendly status in recognition of their efforts to support and encourage cycling to school.

The national Cycle Friendly Secondary School Award recognises schools, teachers and volunteers committed to increasing cycling at school.

The award has been developed by Cycling Scotland with the aim of promoting cycling to school as a pleasant, healthy and economical travel choice.

Ross Sweeney, Active Schools Co-ordinator – Chryston cluster, explains: “A few years ago we received funding from Education Scotland and bought 30 mountain bikes.

“More recently we have integrated cycling into the PE curriculum and all PE staff are trained Cycle Trainer Assistants (CTA’s).

“As well as this we have been running an after-school bike club and we also have a bike maintenance course.  I have also trained up senior pupils who as part of the sports leaders course to be CTA’s.

“As we have done so much relating to cycling over the past couple of years we decided to apply for this award, which we are delighted to have achieved.  Hopefully we can continue to build on this by encouraging even more pupils to cycle to school.”

Cllr Frank McNally, Convener of Education, added: “I’d like to congratulate everyone associated with the school on their commitment to promoting cycling. Pupils and staff should be very proud of securing this national award.”

Picnic in the Park

Picnic in the Park is an IDL project .  We took part in an orienteering event in Drumpellier Park. This is what we did in the three subjects involved in the project.

Home Economics

In Home Economics, we made leak and potato soup, filled rolls and healthy flap jacks. It was fun making the food and we liked working together to make our first meal in S1. The food gave us energy to keep us going throughout the course. The food was easy to make and was nice to eat. Our teachers thought we did well working together to make the meal and they thought we worked more efficiently together.

Geography

In Social Subjects about three weeks before we went to Picnic in the Park, we learned how to read a map and what some of the useful symbols meant so that  if we got lost it helped us to find our way back. The teachers who were teaching us thought it really helped us and we improved our map reading skills throughout the weeks we were learning Geography.  As we were using the map to get to each stamp, we had to know how to read it.  We also had to work as part of a team and had to work on our communication skills.

P.E

The P.E department organised the whole fun and enjoyable event that all S1 pupils participate in. The P.E department as a whole thought we did extremely well and are very proud of us. In the weeks leading up to the event we did loads of running, orienteering and a bleep test . We thought that practising around the school doing orienteering really helped us for this event. We thought this event was great fun and enjoyable. It improved our fitness.

Battle of the Bands 2018

This year on the 22nd  of February,  the school band, Voltage, won NLC’s  Battle of the Bands. We decided to interview Voltage and this is what they had to say:

RYAN- It was very exciting to play in front of a humongous audience in an amazing concert hall in Battle of the Bands. I could not be prouder to play alongside Lauren and Fraser. I thank everyone who showed up and supported me and our band and I appreciate the fabulous support.  I was so happy we won the great prize of £600 for the school.

LAUREN- It felt great to win again and I felt really happy and pretty much lost for words to receive the prize money.

FRASER- It was a spectacular feeling performing on stage and I would 100% do it again.

S1 CLUBS Dance

In Dance Club, we are currently working on a cheer dance that will be displayed at the North Lanarkshire Dance Competition in March. We all enjoy and think dancing is fun.  Recently, at a show case in St Ambrose, we displayed our street dance to many North Lanarkshire schools.  This event helped us bond as a team and gave us self-confidence.  It showed how amazing we all are!!  We have made good friends. We work together as a team.

The Dance Club meets every Wednesday from 3pm till 4pm.  Our teacher is Miss Ringrose from Biology.

News and Views

Hello and welcome to the  News and Views section of the Chryston High School newsletter.

In first year life becomes more like a reality you become well known,  have lots more friends and become part of a bigger group. Becoming part of a new environment is hard because you need to get used to your surroundings.  Finding your way around can be difficult in such a big school like Chryston.   However, you do find your way after a few weeks.

Interview with Head of First Year and Depute Head Mrs Mullen

Q-What is it like every year to have a new S1?

A-It is exciting because I know that the first years will make a big difference to Chryston High School.  They can bring great skills to our school.

Q-How do you feel to be Head of S1?

A-I feel very lucky because of I get to visit all the primary schools and meet all of our pupils when they are still young.  I then have the joy of watching all of our young people growing up.

Q-Is it hard being Head of S1?

A-Being Head of S1 is a privilege.

Q-Why do you enjoy being a teacher?

A-I love being a teacher because I love learning and being with students.

Interview of S1 pupil

A-It is hard at first because you  move classes a lot and have to get used to all the new teachers.

Q-Is it hard talking to new people?

A-Not for me as I am a confident person but others may be shy and find it harder to talk to new people.

Q-Have you made a lot of new friends?

A-Yeah, I have made a lot of different friends – some from my old school and some from other schools.

World Challenge Raffle & Silent Auction Donations

Hello!  We are looking to hold a massive raffle and silent auction at the end of the year to help us raise funds for our expedition to Vietnam in 2019.

We’re looking for as many brilliant raffle prizes to be donated as possible, and all raffle prizes will be greatly appreciated.

If anyone owns, works or knows anyone who works for a business, restaurant, football team, or sports facility (local or nationally) who would be willing to donate a prize for our events, can you please contact Miss Renicks at the school.

We’ve emailed quite a few businesses and football clubs for donations but haven’t had any response yet.

Thank you in advance and for considering our request.

Thursday 1st March School Closed

NLC has closed all schools today as a result of the red warning from the Met Office. We will pass on information as soon as we receive it.

This is another bonus study day for all our senior pupils. Use the time to prepare and revise for your assessments and assignments which form part of your national qualifications. You can message subject departments on their Twitter accounts if you need help or advice.

Stay safe everyone.
