National 4/5 Modern Studies
Modern Studies follows a multidisciplinary approach to develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of contemporary political and social issues in local, Scottish, United Kingdom and international contexts. Candidates develop the skills to interpret and participate in the social and political processes they will encounter in their lives.
What I will learn?
The National 5 Modern Studies course has three areas of study: Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom; Social Issues in the United Kingdom; International Issues. There is considerable flexibility in the themes which can be studied within each area in order to allow for personalisation and choice.
At Chryston High School we teach:
- Social issues – Crime and law
- World power – USA
- Democracy in Scotland
How will I be assessed?
- National 5 – 2 hour 20 minute SQA end of year exam and an assignment.
- National 4 – there is no exam but pupils will write an added value unit (AVU).
How will I progress?
- Pupils may wish to progress onto Higher Modern Studies or National 5.
