Graphic Communication

Graphic Communication is offered from National 4 to Advanced Higher level. During this course pupils apply knowledge and understanding of graphic communication standards, protocols and conventions, and develop an understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our environment and society. This course develops skills which are useful within careers in engineering, architecture, product design and graphic design. National 5 to Advanced Higher are assessed through an assignment, completed in class and a question paper during the SQA exam diet.

Design & Technology

Design & Technology is offered at National 3 level. During this course pupils apply knowledge and understanding of graphic communication publications, testing of structures and basic craft skills. This course develops skills which are useful in progression into National 4 Graphic Communication, National 4 Practical Metalworking & National 4 Practical Woodworking. This qualification is completed in class through a series of practical tasks.

Practical Craft Skills

Practical Craft Skills is offered at National 3 level. During this course pupils will develop skills in marking-out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials. This course develops skills which are useful in progression into National 4 Practical Metalworking & National 4 Practical Woodworking. This qualification is completed in class through a series of practical tasks.

Practical Metalworking

Practical Metalworking is offered from National 4 to National 5 level. During this course pupils will develop skills in marking-out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials, as well as adjusting and maintaining a range of hand tools. This course develops skills which are useful within apprenticeships in plumbing, gas and construction. The National 4 course is completed through a final model, which is constructed within the workshop in school from February to April. The National 5 course is completed through a final model worth 70%, which is constructed within the workshop in school from February to April. Pupils will also sit a question paper, worth 30%, during the SQA exam diet.

Practical Woodworking

Practical Woodworking is offered from National 4 to National 5 level. During this course pupils will develop skills in marking-out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials, as well as adjusting and maintaining a range of hand tools. This course develops skills which are useful within apprenticeships in joinery and construction. The National 4 course is completed through a final model, which is constructed within the workshop in school from February to April. The National 5 course is completed through a final model worth 70%, which is constructed within the workshop in school from February to April.
