S1
French
The context in S1 is ‘Ourselves and Others’. Pupils learn to talk about themselves, their family and pets, their school, where they live and their summer holidays. S1 pupils learn about French school life and complete a research project on France during their library periods as part of the cultural aspects of the course. They learn knowledge about language including the present tense of regular and irregular verbs, nouns, adjectives, and the future tense (le futur proche). As well as developing their skills in Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing, learners will learn how to use a bilingual dictionary. The skills focus weeks help to consolidate the skills that they learn through everyday learning and teaching. They get the opportunity to experience Active learning, ICT, numerous games, individual, pair and group work in Modern Languages. The course is taught using ICT resources, Métro 1 and Studio 1.
Spanish
In S1 all pupils will complete a unit of work in Spanish/Italian covering basic information such as greetings, name, age, numbers, days, months, birthday and nationality. This happens in the month of June after the change of timetable. Learners develop their listening, reading, talking and writing skills. They also gain a good understanding of how the skills they are learning in French and are transferable when learning another language.
S2
French
The context in S2 is ‘Health & Well-being’. Pupils learn to talk about their sports and hobbies, daily routine, illness and injury, food & drink, healthy living and past holidays. S2 pupils learn about French food and drink, typical French shops and towns and they complete a research project during their library periods as part of the cultural aspects of the course. They learn knowledge about language including reflexive verbs, negatives, prepositions modal verbs, and the perfect tense. As well as developing their skills in Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing, learners will find out how to use a bilingual dictionary. As in S1, the skills focus weeks help to consolidate the skills that they learn through everyday learning and teaching. S2 pupils continue to get the opportunity to experience Active learning, ICT, numerous games, individual, pair and group work in Modern Languages. The course is taught using ICT resources, Métro 2 Vert & Rouge and Studio 2.
Spanish
In S2 each class learns Spanish during a six week rotation. The first period revises name, age, greetings and manners covered in S1. The next five weeks are spent learning how to order food and drink in a café. This complements the food & drink topic taught in S2 French and allows pupils to use their transferable skills and knowledge about one language in a second language.
S3
French
The context in S3 is ‘The World of Work’. Pupils learn to use language in a work context, such as the hospitality industry in a hotel or restaurant, applying for a job in French and taking part in an interview, discussing part time jobs and work experience. S3 pupils learn about popular places to visit in France as part of the cultural aspect of the course. They learn knowledge about language including the imperative, the future tense and the conditional tense. The S3 course is structured around the SQA Award, Languages for Life and Work Award. This is made up of 3 units (SCQF Levels 3& 4): Languages for Life, Languages for Work, Employability. Not only will S3 pupils be able to develop their knowledge of vocabulary to do with the world of work, as well as build on their skills in Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing, but they also develop an understanding of the skills and processes required when applying for a job either in Scotland or in France.
Spanish
Learners are taught a range of topics at beginners’ level in Spanish. The topics covered include information about you and your family, school, hobbies and home area. Some grammar points taught include adjective agreements, the present tense, the future tense and some modal verbs. Learners develop their skills in talking, writing, listening and reading. They also build upon the transferable skills they are developing in French, such as translation and dictionary skills, and they also develop their remembering and understanding skills. The course will help to build each learner’s confidence and communication skills through working independently and working with others.
