National No Smoking Day

Each year the No Smoking Campaign helps hundreds of thousands of smokers to quit smoking and begin a new healthier lifestyle. This year is the campaign’s thirtieth anniversary, and we are invited to join No Smoking Day with the 2013 theme: ‘Swap fags for swag’.

Why swag? Because focus groups told the campaign organisers that the cost of smoking is one of the main drivers for quitting. Health and family are also high on the list, but the cost is what gives people the final push.

This year’s campaign is all about what smokers will gain when they quit – as well as improved health, their wallets will also get heavier, and they can spend the extra cash on whatever they like – whether it’s a fun day out for all the family, or a holiday in that place they’ve always wanted to go.

We think this year’s theme is one you can really get creative with!

More information is available from the Campaign’s website:

In Lourdes Secondary Today

Govan Youth Information Project has organised interactive smoking awareness displays that highlight the dangers of smoking and passive smoking in our school and homes. Displays will be set up at lunchtime in the Dinner Hall

In addition, the pupils will be given a smoking awareness quiz. Answers to the quiz are available on the displays. One correct entry will be pulled out of a hat and the lucky winner will win a prize.

WANT TO MAKE THE NEWS? (BBC SCHOOL REPORT)

Why not get involved in this year’s BBC School Report on the 21st March? We are looking for budding journalists, news reporters and an enthusiastic film crew aged between 11-16 to find original news stories to cover and report on. We are also hoping to recruit S5/6 pupils as mentors so if you are interested let us know!

Whether you see yourself in front of the camera reporting on events, interviewing a wide range of people, researching and writing interesting and informative articles or being involved behind the scenes (filming and editing) there is a job waiting for you!

Every Wednesday after school there will be a meeting in Room 217 (from 3-4) where a variety of master classes will be on offer (e.g. interview skills/camera techniques etc) to help prepare you for the big LIVE NEWS DAY!

On the 21st of March we will be uploading your written reports as well as your audio and visual media reports to the school website by 2pm for people of all ages all around the UK to see what you have created and produced.

If you are interested, please see Ms Grehan or Ms Ross for more details and a consent form!

Remember, don’t just do it – report it!!!
