This Week in Beech

This week has been very exciting for the beech class – we have been learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly because we have five tiny little caterpillars in clas that we have to look after until they become butterflies!

Here is Alysse who has been a very responsible citizen in helping to look after the caterpillars so far!

We have also continued to explore the themes of Alice in Wonderland this week.  We made ‘talking’ flowers from the story…

And discussed the difference between good and bad manners.

In cookery, we made our very own truffle caterpillars!    Look at how cute they are!

IDL/THEME – FARM TO FORK

*Successful Learners*  *Confident Individuals*

The Sungazers have started our new topic ‘Farm to Fork’ and have been learning all about where our food comes. We have been discussing foods that we like & dislike, as well as foods that we think are good for our bodies.

We made a fresh snack using Farm produced foods:

We continued practising our life skills by making our own Pig Biscuits. We used a mixture of healthy and sugary foods and talked about how it is good to eat sweet treats in moderation. These treats were more of a hit in the class, believe it or not!

IDL Sciences – Caterpillar eating sensory bags

Successful Learners       Effective Contributors

The Snowdrops have shown lots of interest in our new theme story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Everyone has responded well, exploring lots of story visual aids and pictures.  We have also been learning some new Makaton signs for the different fruits and foods the hungry caterpillar ate.  A favourite activity this week, has been creating sensory caterpillar bags and choosing different foods that we thought our caterpillars would like to eat.  The Snowdrops showed interest and participated actively in using gel to fill their caterpillar’s tummy, making personal choices and using their fingers to make the food pictures move about.

FAOL Enterprise – Vegetable Soup

Confident Individuals/Successful Learners

The Asteroids class had lots of culinary fun this week as we made our own Asteroid- style vegetable soup. We explored the vegetables first by touching and smelling them, then following our recipe cards, we had to wash them, ready to be chopped to go in the pot. We were all responsible and handled the knife sensibly to chop up the different vegetables. We found the onions the smelliest of all! Next we measured water into a jug, then crumbled a stock cube in. We all enjoyed mixing the vegetables in the big pot before Miss Wilson cooked it. When the soup was ready we enjoyed smelling and looking at our finished dish. Good job, Asteroids!

We tried to guess which items would float and which items would sink. We weren’t always right! Some items even floated for a wee while then sank! We had great fun. We’ve also enjoyed a treasure hunt, made ‘star’ sandwiches and made tree pictures as we explored seasons.
