Willowbank School, KilmarnockAfter all our preparation it was finally Burns’ Day. The Transition class were Responsible Citizens taking part in lots of activities and setting up the classroom for lunch time. There were lots of literary skills on display sequencing stories and adding sentences. Well done everyone!
It was our last Scottish dancing lesson this week when Transition class went to P.E. The class were all Effective Contributors when they took part in a minion zumba warm-up. The class were excellent when they tried the Virginia Reel for the first time. Everyone took part with real effort and enjoyment. We finished up by testing our memories by doing a dance from a previous week. Everyone showed that they had been paying attention and danced a flawless St Bernard’s Waltz. Well done everyone. A new P.E. activity will start next week!
On Tuesday we celebrated Robert Burns.
In the morning we listened to some Scottish poems – our favourite was ‘Crocodile’ by JK Annand. We then created our own acrostic poem choosing different words that started with each of the letters in the word Scotland.
In the afternoon we used strips of paper to create our own tartan design for our kilts that will be displayed on our Katie Morag display outside our classroom. We were all confident individuals at choosing which strip of colour we wanted to use each time. We added a black semi -circle to be the sporran and gold detail with our name.
Last week were were confident individuals mixing up icing in a bowl and using a spoon to create a Scotland flag design on a biscuit.
This week after reading some of the Katie Morag stories we matched some of the characters and places from the stories. All of the pupils were successful learners and able to glue either the pieces or the paper. Some were able to match picture to picture and some were able to match picture to word. They enjoyed the stories and we discussed each of the characters and the different places Katie Morag visited in some of the stories.

The Daisies class enjoyed reading “Greyfriars Bobby’s New Adventure” story. They were very interested to learn more about Bobby and enjoyed looking at pictures of his memorial statue in Edinburgh. We found out that people believe if you rub Bobby’s nose that it brings you good luck. We took turns rubbing Bobby’s nose for luck and made a tartan Greyfriars Bobby craft.

We have been listening to lots of Scottish music and stories this week – but the Highland Dancing was a real favourite for this young lady. And on the 25th we enjoyed the Transition Classes Virtual Burns Supper.
SQA Communication we made 5 sensory bottles, one for each of the Inside Out Characters, using a funnel to put in small coloured beads, glitter and sequin.
We also managed a little bit of sensory play too.

We are continuing to work on some Scottish Animals, this week Badgers…we will show them next week they may take a few days for the glue to dry!!!!

To help celebrate Robert Burns and all about Scotland, the Snowdrops have been participating in lots of Scottish themed activities. Some of the Snowdrops have been learning about 2d shapes and made a thistle using triangles, a circle and a rectangle. Some also made a handprint mouse in honour of Burns’ poem ‘To A Mouse’. The Snowdrops showed interest in lots of Scottish items as we went through the Scottish alphabet. ‘H’ for ‘highland coo’ was a firm favourite! The Snowsdrops also had the chance to dress in a kilt and experience some traditional Scottish foods. Opinions were mixed on the haggis, neeps and tatties!
Successful Learners
As part of our Scotland activities, the Sunflower’s have been learning a lot of new Scottish words. Each child has engaged in story related activities by matching the correct words to the pictures. We then collected thistles with the letters of our names on them and practiced putting them in order. Everyone loved making Scotland flag sensory bags too!
Successful Learners and Confident Individuals
On Monday, the Sunflower’s enjoyed a story all about Edinburgh Zoo! Each child explored the animals via our live cam of Edinburgh zoo and everyone loved rice and water play with the animals. The children enjoyed matching the animals with their names and some pupils used an AAC device to hear the sound of each animal at story time. We then practiced overwriting, underwriting and following patterns to complete our zoo animal worksheets.
