P5D visit RSPB Mersehead

Primary 5D enjoyed our outing to RSPB Mersehead to learn about the journey of Barnacle Geese. We were amazed at the journey the geese make from Svalbard in the Arctic to Scotland each year. We had great fun creating our own beach art using natural materials. After lunch, we learned about the lifecycle of the Natterjack Toad. This rare and amazing toad is currently hibernating at Mersehead. We visited the bird hide and used binoculars to spot wildlife. Although the weather was wet and windy, we had a great day!

Bike Breakfast

As part of the Big Pedal Initiative this week, some pupils cycled and scooted to school and had a bike breakfast. This event was supported by Katie from ibike. Thank you Katie for providing breakfast. Well done to all those who cycled and scooted to school even though the weather was cold and a bit wet.

Salmon In The Classroom

Our school Eco Group enjoyed a trip to Shirmers Burn to release our alevins today. Mrs Dyson’s Primary 5 and the Eco group have been involved in looking after salmon eggs in school. Rowan Armstrong from Galloway Fisheries brought us a tray of 100 eggs together with a water cooler, just over two weeks ago. They hatched a week later and so were ready to be released, today, into the water so that they can continue feeding once their yolk sacs are all used up. We will revisit the burn in June to take part in some electro fishing when we will be able to see how much our salmon have grown. By then, they will be ‘fry’ before becoming ‘parr’ when they are one year old. We were also very interested to see frogspawn in one pond and toads in another. Afterwards we enjoyed eating our snacks while enjoying the pleasant weather and the lovely views of the Loch Ken countryside.

Enjoying a Fairtrade Break!

Since achieving FairActive status by the Fairtrade Foundation, Dalbeattie Primary School continues on our journey to raise awareness of Fairtrade. Following on from the successful Fairtrade Breakfasts of last year, Primary 5D pupils and class teacher Mrs Dyson organised and ran a Fairtrade Tuck Shop for staff and pupils. They offered toast with Fairtrade jam, Fairtrade bananas and a selection of Fairtrade cookies and oaty biscuits. They wish to thank the Co-op in Dalbeattie who gave their support and generously donated the bananas. Many thanks also go to Mrs Connel, Mrs Cox and Mrs Ross who prepared the hot toast for everyone. The Fairtrade Breaks were very successful with pupils from all classes and staff showing support and enjoying a Fairtrade snack. Mrs Dyson was once again very proud of the efforts of everyone in promoting Fairtrade.

Scots Poetry Winners Visit Alma

The Scots poetry winners from each class visited Alma House today and recited their poems to the residents. Well done to the boys and girls who performed their poems extremely well . During our visit, the children also chatted to the residents. Thank you to Mrs Henderson for inviting us. We hope to visit again in the near future.

As part of our new topic we have been learning about animal adaptation. To support our class learning, Miss Clendinning organised a surprise visit from Rango, a beautiful chameleon.

During Rango’s visit we asked Mrs McVinnie lots of questions and applied our learning in class to discuss why and how Rango could use his ability to change colour in the wild for protection and survival.

Mrs McVinnie kindly allowed us to hold Rango and some of us even allowed him to walk up our arms!! Miss Clendinning was not so brave!!!

A special thank you to Mrs McVinnie for bringing Rango in and huge apologies from Miss Clendinning to any parents who are now being hounded to buy a chameleon!!

Promoting Fairtrade

At Dalbeattie Primary School, we are continuing in our work to promote Fairtrade. A representative from Kirkcudbright Fairtrade Group, Mrs Van Zwanenberg, spoke at our whole school assembly about how we can help others by choosing to buy Fairtrade products like Fairtrade bananas. Primary 5D pupils explored the items in her shopping basket by finding out where the Fairtrade ingredients came from. They also watched a short film and discussed the benefits of Fairtrade. At assembly, Primary 5D pupils performed a short play to introduce the theme of a Fairtrade Break which the class will run next week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, P5D pupils will run a Fairtrade Tuck Shop offering toast with Fairtrade strawberry jam, Fairtrade biscuits and Fairtrade bananas. We appreciate all support in raising awareness of Fairtrade and involvement in our Fairtrade Break event.

Salmon in the Classroom

We are really excited again this year to participate in the Salmon in the Classroom project with Galloway Fisheries Trust. Rowan spoke to Primary 5 pupils and the Eco Committee about the lifecycle of the Atlantic Salmon and threats to their survival. We are so excited to have our tank set up with about 100 salmon eggs inside.

New School Badge Winner

We are delighted to announce that Lainey Ireland from P7 is the winner of our new school badge competition. Lainey’s badge was one of four final designs that pupils have been voting on over the past two weeks. Lainey’s badge has now been copy righted to the school for use on school clothing and documents.

Heart Start Training

Pupils from Primary 6 and 7 classes have recently participated in Heart Start training a British Heart Foundation Initiative. The pupils learned about emergency life support- as the motto stated, ‘ Simple Skills Save Lives ‘. Training was delivered by members of the Dalbeattie First Responders team supported by the local Fire Brigade. Thank you to all volunteers who attended training to support with pupils learning.
