Today was Christmas Jumper Day at Dalbeattie Primary School. There were a wide variety of jumper designs and some fab creations using flashing lights, tinsel and baubles. A donation of £50 has been sent to Save the Children from Dalbeattie Primary School Fund.

Birds, eggs and Christmas
We have been learning about eggs. We smashed, cracked and whisked up eggs. We hardboiled some of them and looked at how they had changed. We peeled the hardboiled ones and ate them with toast for snack.
We had a visitor from the RSPB at Mersehead on Friday to talk to us about birds. We played listening games and tried to identify some bird calls and we made bird cakes.
The Christmas preparations have begun. The house corner has turned into Santa’s grotto, we have been practising for our nativity and we have been doing some Christmas crafts.
Christmas Lights Switch On
Some pupils from Primary 6 attended the switching on of the Christmas Light is Dalbeattie on Friday 2nd of December. The children performed a selection of Christmas songs they had be learning in school. It is always a pleasure to support local events within the community.
P6 will be going along to the Day Centre later this term to perform their selection of songs again and P3 will be visiting Alma House to share some songs from the Christmas Nativity.
Birds
The nursery children decided they want to learn more about birds and came up with a list of questions they would like the answers to, many of which involved birds eating worms! We have created a wormery to look more closely at worms and have made bird feeders to help the birds survive the colder weather. We will work our way through the list of questions and have a visitor from the RSPB at Mersehead coming to visit us later this week who might be able to help us with our answers.

Children In Need and Malawi Fundraising
On Friday 18th November, we had a non uniform day to raise money for Children In Need and for the Janice Jamieson Memorial Fund to sponsor our young person in Malawi. Throughout the week, the School Pupil Council also ran a competition to turn Pudsey all spotty in ‘Spottiland’ for a ‘spotacular’ fundraiser with Children In Need prizes for five lucky winners. Altogether an amazing £410 was raised and the money will be split between the two charities. Thank you to everyone who supported this.
Sea Cadets Annual Trophy Presentation
On Tuesday 15th of November I attended the Dalbeattie Sea Cadets trophy presentation evening. An update on the units progress over the year was given by Mrs Millar. Commanding Officer Lt(SCC) E. McVinnie RNR then provided an update on progress and achievements of the cadets. Badges and certificates were presented to cadets as well as trophies for achievements. Well done to Logan Bond for achieving the award of best Junior Cadet and to Andrew Millar who received the Endeavour Award for having a go and trying everything so far in cadets and never giving up.
P1’s – Road Safety
Last week P1 were learning how to cross the road safely and the importance of being seen at night. We all went to cross Southwick Road with the help of Mrs Widdowson and discussed the Green Cross Code. We also discussed alternative ways of crossing the road safely; for example using the traffic lights on the High Street.
Thank you Mrs Widdowson!
World Nursery Rhyme Week
We participated in World Nursery Rhyme Week. We enjoyed a new rhyme each day and based some of our activities around this. The rhymes we learned were Baa Baa Black Sheep, Two Little Dickie Birds, Incy Wincy Spider and Hey Diddle Diddle. There were some funny new verses to sing!
On Wednesday we peeled, cooked and ate the last of the potatoes from our garden. We had mash and beans for snack.
It was Remembrance Day on Friday. Some of us went to see the war memorial in the park.
Remembrance Service
Dalbeattie Primary School was represented at the Remembrance Service in church today by five of our house captains accompanied by Mrs Duncan. The children and Mrs Duncan along with many other local organisations and members of the public then attended a service in Colliston Park to lay poppy wreaths at the war memorial in memory of those who have served and those who continue to serve in our armed forces around the world today.
