Pattern Hunt

We went on a pattern hunt to the park.  We were pattern detectives and took binoculars and magnifying glasses to help us.  We were amazed at how many patterns there are around us.  We all got a chance to use the cameras to take photos of what we found – and we took quite a few pictures of our feet and the ground as well!  Below are some of the pictures that we took ourselves.

This week we are beginning our Autumn topic with a walk in the woods on Wednesday and we are concluding our Elmer topic with an Elmer Day celebration on Thursday.

Elmer the Elephant

This week we have started to follow the adventures of Elmer the Elephant, who is a colourful character from the popular stories by David McKee.  We have been using these stories to learn about colour.  We have particularly enjoyed the colour treasure hunts in the garden and filling large elephants with paint in the playground.  In nursery we have been making a large collage of Elmer for the wall, as well as little elephants of our own.  We have played games to help us learn our colours and have sung colour related songs.  We are looking forward to finding out more about Elmer next week, and investigating pattern next.

P5D Outdoor Learning

Primary 5 pupils had a fun afternoon participating in a variety of Outdoor Learning experiences. We planted and then watered wildflower seeds into our class planter. We then created our own Nature Art to decorate our planter by using a variety of natural materials found in our school grounds. We explored the field area to identify invertebrates using our ID Bug Charts. Calum’s group even found a bug which changed colour as they were watching it! We also took the opportunity to carry out some litter picking to keep our grounds beautiful. Mrs Dyson was very proud of all our hard work and enthusiasm during all activities.

Fun Day at the Beach

20120101_043941

Primary 1D went to Rockcliffe as part of their Beach topic.

We jumped on the yellow school bus and took our lunch to have a picnic on the beach.

Chloe: “It was fun having a picnic”
We were going to give the beach a clean. We took litter pickers and gloves and we picked up all the rubbish we could find. We found a lot of bottle tops, bits of plastic, paper wrappers and a lobster skeleton.

Ryan: “It’s fun picking up litter”

We have to pick up our litter at the beach so that the animals don’t get hurt. Animals might get stuck in the litter or they might get sick by eating it.

We worked with James and Judy from the National Trust who taught us all about the animals at the beach and what litter can do to them.

We got to look in the rock pools for crabs and fish and we even found a PRAWN!

At the end, James and Judy taught us a new game called “Prawns and Fishes”. We liked it, it was fun.

P5 Group 1 water sports

The first group of Primary Fives  visited Carlingwark Loch yesterday with Mrs Graham and Mrs Robison to carry out some fun activities with the Outdoor Education team. The children were split into three groups and took part in sailing, kayaking and canoeing. All the children had a great time and were very enthusiastic throughout.  Some even braved the cold and snow to have a little swim at the end!

Well done!

VIKING HOUSES

CHILDREN MAKE VIKING HOUSES

AT DALBEATTIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Exclusive by Fraser Campbell

The P3/4 children made mini—Viking homes.  It took them a long time but they finished it.  Some of them thatched the roof while others planted sticks in ground and then slid art straws through. The way that they thatched was with straw and card. They cut the straw   and placed the straw on the card “Well it was  not easy,” said the children. It was really brilliant fun. I thought they all looked great.

Can you make a Viking Ship?

P3/4 were learning how to measure a Viking ship.

Reported by Abbie Millar

On Wednesday 10th of February P3/4 went down to the field and measured the size of a Viking war ship because they are learning about the Vikings.   They worked well together to complete the task. From their research they knew it was 23 metres long and 5 metres wide. They were all working very hard to measure it accurately. Some used metre sticks while others used trundle wheels. Most groups managed confidently even though it was tricky. Well done P3/4. “ It was tricky but we managed it!”
