We are delighted to share the news with you that Dalbeattie Primary School has successfully renewed its Eco-Schools Green Flag Award status. We were notified of this during the Christmas holidays. P5D Outdoor Learning
Primary 5 pupils had a fun afternoon participating in a variety of Outdoor Learning experiences. We planted and then watered wildflower seeds into our class planter. We then created our own Nature Art to decorate our planter by using a variety of natural materials found in our school grounds. We explored the field area to identify invertebrates using our ID Bug Charts. Calum’s group even found a bug which changed colour as they were watching it! We also took the opportunity to carry out some litter picking to keep our grounds beautiful. Mrs Dyson was very proud of all our hard work and enthusiasm during all activities.
ECO Committee Meeting
Our ECO Committee had their final meeting of this session. They reviewed our targets and organised the last few activities to be completed – a litter survey with presentation and reading a story to Nursery pupils about the importance of clearing away litter. They helped to organise the new resources that will be used by pupils when playing outside during lunch breaks. These include imaginative bags with model dinosaurs and lego men, construction bags with wooden pieces for building, wooden boards for writing outdoors and nature investigation bags with binoculars, magnifying glasses and ID charts. ECO Outing
Our Eco Committee returned to the river at the Dee Hatchery to see how our salmon had grown. We watched as the Galloway Fisheries staff carried out Electro-Fishing in the water. We were then able to have a closer look at the salmon they caught and unfortunately, some crayfish.
We then visited Spottes Burn where we saw even more fish. We were able to have a closer look at salmon, trout and eels, before returning them safely back to the water. We presented Rowan Armstrong with a card and flowers to show our appreciation of her input and support with this project.
ECO Committee visit Tongland
Our Eco Committee recently visited Tongland Power Station to learn more about renewable energy. Rowan Armstrong (Fisheries Biologist) gave us an informative tour. We also visited the dam and learned more about the fish ladder and how it is used by the Atlantic Salmon.

Eco Group Visit Rainbow Trout Farm
After releasing our salmon, the Eco members, Mrs Howie and Mrs Dyson made their way to the Bladnoch (near Wigtown) to see around the rainbow trout fish farm – an exciting opportunity to see a working trout farm and touch some big fish!
Eco Group Release our Salmon
We are excited to be participating in the Salmon in the Classroom Project run by Galloway Fisheries Trust. On Thursday, nine of our Eco Committee members, Mrs Howie and Mrs Dyson had the wonderful opportunity to accompany our salmon (known as alevins as they are now hatched) as they were released at the Dee Hatchery next to Loch Ken. Thank you very much to Rowan Armstrong from the Fisheries Trust. We look forward to returning to this release site in the Summer term to see how the salmon have developed.
Fairtrade Breakfast (10th March)
Thank you to everyone who supported our second Fairtrade Breakfast by coming along to enjoy a selection of Fairtrade beverages and breakfast items. A great way to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight! (please click on individual photo for full size photo)
Fairtrade Breakfast (3rd March)
Thank you to everyone who supported our Fairtrade Breakfast this morning! We were excited to be participating in Fairtrade Fortnight by holding our very own Fairtrade Breakfast. Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, toast with Fairtrade jam and honey, Fairtrade geo bars and Fairtrade oaty biscuits were all on offer. A big thank to the Cooperative Food shop in Dalbeattie who kindly donated the Fairtrade bananas. We also had some taster Divine chocolates to sample. Mrs Van Zwanenberg, a local Traidcraft representative, joined us with a variety of Fairtrade items available for purchase. Look out for our article and photos in the Galloway News soon. We are looking forward to another great Fairtrade breakfast next week.
