P5 Fairtrade Workshop
Mrs Dyson was delighted to welcome back Mrs van Zwanenberg to speak to Dalbeattie Primary pupils about Fairtrade and to work with Primary 5 pupils in an interactive workshop. By studying a variety of Fairtrade products and labels, pupils became more aware of Fairtrade ingredients and their country of origin. Pupils sequenced the journey from cocoa bean to bar and discussed the issues facing the cocoa farmers. During Fairtrade Fortnight, Primary 5 pupils continued to develop their knowledge and understanding of Fairtrade and how it helps communities. Members of our class helped run the recent Fairtrade Break whilst many others made a donation to the Fairtrade Foundation through supporting this event.
Code Club – Micro:bits
Welcome to our returning Code Clubbers! Mrs Dyson was very impressed with the enthusiasm, perseverance, teamwork and coding skills demonstrated during our Code Club session on using the BBC micro:bit. Well done everyone! Already, Code Clubbers have had great success programming this handheld micro-computer. They have learned how to use the LEDs to make their own flashing heart badge. They have coded buttons on the micro:bit to show that it’s happy or sad. Mrs Dyson loved the creativity then shown by the group as they created their own codes and shared these. During the next session, Code Clubbers turned their micro:bits into dice and had great fun in our interactive game to catch Mrs Dyson with the highest roller moving one stride closer to her each time. They used their debugging skills when creating code for their game of ‘Rock Paper Scissors’. Attaching the micro:bit to a battery pack meant that Code Clubbers could shake their micro:bit and play this interactive game in another Code Club Challenge. Fantastic effort everyone!
P5 Scottish Mammal Projects
Primary 5 pupils proudly shared their Scottish Mammal Projects. They worked extremely hard on this homework task to research their chosen mammal, make notes of important information, present their research in an attractive way and create a 3D model of the animal using their own choice of media. After sharing with the class, pupils invited members of P5/6 to their celebration of learning event. Comments praised the fantastic effort made by all. Models and presentations are on display in school for all classes and visitors to enjoy.
