Sponsored Cycle

On Saturday 1st of June pupils from P5-P7 participated in a sponsored cycle event to raise money for school funds. The event involved the four house teams cycling on turbo trainers to see how far they could travel within a 1 hour time slot. Each pupil and supporting adult cycled for at least 5 minutes. Dalbeattie Lions Club and GGB solicitors supported the school with this event and have provided a trophy for the house group that cycled furthest and medals for the team that raised the most sponsor money. Teams will also be allocated points towards sports day totals. Well done and thank you to all those who gave up their time on Saturday to participate and support the event.

Winners in both sections will be announced later this week.

Lego WeDo

On Wednesday the 22nd and Tuesday 28th May, we had the pleasure of Mrs Moyes coming to visit our classroom to demonstrate how to use Lego WeDo and also show us how to become the experts.  We learned all about the different jobs within a team and how to look after the resources.  We were able to follow step-by-step instructions to complete projects.  We worked together to make a snail which flashed different colours and even made sounds!  Some of us got to make a working windmill.  She explained to us how we could challenge ourselves in the future.  It was a great learning opportunity and something we can build upon.  Thank you Mrs Moyes!

Primary 3 Soup Making

On Monday 20th and Monday 27th of May, we ventured through to the High School Home Economics department, where we met Mrs Houston.  As part of our Food and Farming topic, we thought it would be a great idea to make some soup!

We discussed the importance of hand washing before preparing vegetables to make our soup.  Whilst one group was doing this, the others were learning about The Eatwell Guide, and then we swapped over.

At the end of each session, we were able to take our soup home to sample.  Thanks to Mrs Houston for her help!

Primary 5/6 Europe Topic – Italy

Primary 5/6 have had a fun afternoon learning about Italy. They were split into groups and rotated around different stations.

Station 1: Tasting Italian food and comparing it to Scottish food – Bread Sticks, Ferrero Rocher, Italian Coconut Cookies and Chocolate Chip Biscotti.

Station 2: Looking at real Italian greetings cards and making their own using Italian language.

Station 3: Using maps to locate Italian cities and finding out how people travel around Italy.

Station 4: Researching Pompeii and finding out about the volcano by looking at photos and reading books.

Some comments the children made at the end of the lesson:

Lily – “I learnt that the people of Pompeii didn’t know what a volcano was”.

Nicole – “I learnt that Italians eat very strange food but they probably think our food is strange too”.

Archie – “My favourite fact was that people in Italy use different stamps at Christmas time than the rest of the year”.

Jake – “I enjoyed learning about and tasting new Italian foods”.
