Primary 7 received their First Responder Certificates in assembly last week. They participated in their training with Dalbeattie First Responders earlier this term. The trainers were very impressed with the high standards set by the pupils in P7. Well Done!

Primary 5/6 Europe Topic – Italy
Primary 5/6 have had a fun afternoon learning about Italy. They were split into groups and rotated around different stations.
Station 1: Tasting Italian food and comparing it to Scottish food – Bread Sticks, Ferrero Rocher, Italian Coconut Cookies and Chocolate Chip Biscotti.
Station 2: Looking at real Italian greetings cards and making their own using Italian language.
Station 3: Using maps to locate Italian cities and finding out how people travel around Italy.
Station 4: Researching Pompeii and finding out about the volcano by looking at photos and reading books.
Some comments the children made at the end of the lesson:
Lily – “I learnt that the people of Pompeii didn’t know what a volcano was”.
Nicole – “I learnt that Italians eat very strange food but they probably think our food is strange too”.
Archie – “My favourite fact was that people in Italy use different stamps at Christmas time than the rest of the year”.
Jake – “I enjoyed learning about and tasting new Italian foods”.
P1 Searching for flowers….
P1F have been learning about plants and flowers so we decided to go outside to look at how our planters are coming along and see if we could find any flowers we knew….we also enjoyed being out in the sunshine!
We enjoyed drawing some of our flowers.
As we had been talking about springs flowers and animals Roan kindly brought in a birds nest that was in his garden hedge from last year. It was a great example. Thank you for bringing it in to show us.

Special Assembly
We were treated today, in a special assembly, to a percussion instrument performance by musical instrument instructor Mr Duffy. Mr Duffy demonstrated drums and the electronic xylophone before inviting pupil, Carrie, to the stage to perform some of the drumming pieces she has been working on. At the same assembly, Bikeability Awards were presented to our recent participants. Certificates were also presented to our four gymnasts, who have recently competed at the Scottish Primary Schools Floor and vault Competition, held in Perth. Eva Swanston, Sophie McRobert, Abbie Millar and Lily McCubbin represented their school so well; they came 13th out of 23 teams at Level 2. Well done!
Eco Schools 6th Green Flag Celebration Event
On Friday 17th May 2019, Dalbeattie Primary School held a special event to celebrate the renewal of its Eco Schools green flag- now the 6th awarded to Dalbeattie Primary. Because our feedback from Eco Schools had highlighted the good partnership work we had entered into with parent helpers, local organisations and businesses, it was decided that we would share our success with all who had been involved. One special invited guest was Finlay Carson MSP who had highlighted the school’s eco work at the Scottish Parliament. We are very grateful to Mrs Houston and the Hospitality Department at Dalbeattie High School who prepared and served some wonderful refreshments which included green flag topped cakes! Mrs Duncan and Mrs Howie are both very proud of the eco committee’s participation in the event and are also very grateful to Kate Howard, Musical Director who led contributions from the William Heughan Choir who performed two eco songs. This was in addition to the two songs which the whole school have been practising in recent weeks. Thank you too to all our invited guests for coming along to share in our celebration and to Mrs Murray for overseeing the invitations. Thank you also to Mr Parker who went to new heights to display all 6 of our flags and for suspending our paper mache Earth!
Cash For Kids High School’s Superheroes Fundraiser
On Thursday 16th May, Dalbeattie High School students, under the ‘wonderful’ leadership of Mrs Houston organised a ‘Superheroes Fundraiser’ in aid of Cash For Kids. The Primary children brought in money to buy cakes and to take part in a whole host of activities which included ‘Beat Banana Man Goalie’ and Superhero Photo-Booth. An exact total is to be confirmed but it believed that the amount raised was well over £200. Thank you Mrs Houston, aka ‘WonderWoman’ and your team of Superheroes! We would like to thank all our parents and children for supporting this very worthwhile charity.
