Primary 5 pupils have been learning about pneumatic systems. They used syringes and plastic tubing to explore pneumatics and were then set the challenge by Mrs Dyson to design and create a Burger Box Buddy using pneumatics. Pupils worked collaboratively to sketch and label their design, making decisions on what materials to use. They used their creativity and problem solving skills to make their model and evaluated their designs. Mrs Dyson was so pleased with the teamwork skills demonstrated and the creativity shown.
Cinderella and Rockerfella
With audience participation from the outset – goodies to cheer, baddies to boo – and some very corny jokes, the stage was set for the tale of Cinderella and Rockerfella to unfold in the panto-style production at Dalbeattie Primary School. Fairy Nastyboots and Naughty Kitty were thwarted in their attempts to prevent Cinders and Rockerfella (Prince Charming) from falling in love. Luckily, the Fairy Brigade were there with a ‘Wey Hey Hey’ to save the day. The Ugly Sisters brought the house down with their duet of “I’m so in love with me!” Buttons entertained the audience with his limericks and his talking dog Teaser. A special thank you goes to Miss Dale and Holywood Primary School for the loan of backdrops and outrageous costumes. Thanks also to support staff and all family members who supported children, and to Kyle in S4 at Dalbeattie High School for his expertise with sound and lights. Mrs Anderson, Mrs McLean and Mrs Dyson were very proud of all pupils from Primary 3/4, Primary 4/5 and Primary 5 who had worked extremely hard to make the show a roaring success.
RotaKids at Christmas Light Switch On
The RotaKids were busy at the Dalbeattie Christmas Light Switch on. They were taking guesses fort the number of sweets in the jar and which square Santa was hiding in. Despite a slightly damp night, the children managed to make £57. This will be presented to the Dalbeattie Chamber of Trade’s Christmas Lights Appeal. This fundraising is part of the Rotakids local community work. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Cathro for helping to organise this event. Thank you to Grace, Mirren, Emily, Firth, Rianna and Halle who all came along to help on the night. The jar was won by Struan Caldow and the four chocolate Santas were won by other children in the school.
Head Teacher’s Awards and Environmental Awareness
At our assembly today, our pupils from each class were awarded with their Head Teacher’s certificates and pencil as prizes. Also, we were delighted to welcome three senior students from the High School who gave the primary school children a presentation as part of their work for Environmental Awareness week. The power-point was very informative and stimulated some good discussion. We are sure some of the messages will now be taken more seriously as a result of the example shown by these older students. Well done and thank you! By the end of Friday, Christmas decorations arrived but the children haven’t seen them yet….
Primary 1 /2 Our School in the Past and Present
Over the last week, we have been learning more about our old school. We have been for a walk to see the granite buildings (1876 onwards) and other link buildings from the 1960s and 1970s. We have also had two former pupils, Tommy Henderson and Ronnie Murray into school for the children to interview them about what it was like to be at school around 70 years ago. Thank you!
P5D Coding using Scratch
P5D Engineering Challenges
Primary 5 pupils demonstrated their creativity and imagination when exploring Kapla blocks. Mrs Dyson enjoyed hearing about the structures pupils had created, the challenges they had encountered and how these had been overcome. Perseverance, determination and resilience were all demonstrated as pupils created.
P5D Electrical Circuit Challenges
Primary 5 pupils worked collaboratively to solve a series of circuit challenges using buzzers, bulbs and motors. After exploring conductors and insulators, pupils used their findings to create a variety of switches to solve the final challenge. Mrs Dyson was impressed with the problem solving skills used and the fantastic teamwork demonstrated.

Primary 1/ 2 Topic Our School Past and Present
Today, Primary 1 /2 had a tour of the High School part of Dalbeattie Learning Campus. This was part of the class learning about our current topic which is ‘Our School in the Past and Present.’ The class loved seeing the parts they had not seen before and were very impressed with the Hospitality Department and the activities in woodwork where Children in Need picture frames were in production! The climbing wall with the granite of Dalbeattie Quarry as a backdrop also impressed us. Next week, we will be visiting the old school site (externally only) and soon we will be welcoming Tommy Henderson and Ronnie Murray from Dalbeattie Museum to talk about what it was like to be at school, a few years back, on Southwick Road.
