Dragons’ Den visit P6F
Primary 6F have been working with Miss Duncan to design their own confectionary product to pitch to our very own Dragons! Each child had to create a new product based on their knowledge of advertising, make an idea board, think about the costing for their product and put a convincing pitch together to present to the Dragons.
The finalists were: Jenny Blackwood; Leon Pipe; Lainey Ireland; Liam Whalen and Myah Sargent.
Our Dragons were: Logan Bond; Ciara McQuarrie; Aaron Campbell and Shannon Kelly.
The winner to be announced…
Dalbeattie High School Visit to P6F
On Tuesday 1st March a group of S3 students visited P6 in order to share their work regarding healthy eating and food labelling. They led various group tasks including ordering drinks based on sugar content and measuring the number of spoonfuls of sugar in a number of popular drinks. This linked very well to our current health work.
Nursery News
We have continued our transport topic in the Nursery this week, amongst other things. Following our transport survey last week, we created pictograms of the results on the interactive whiteboard and used the pictogram to discuss the results – in summary lots of cars but no motorbikes (to the disappointment of quite a few children)! We practised our movement skills outside; weaving in & out of cones, stepping between hoops & balancing on stepping stones. We celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as a favourite character and by creating our own stories; we used a figure, a picture of a place and of a vehicle as stimuli. The children showed great imagination & created some fantastic stories, all of which are now in the children’s PLPs. Mrs Carson brought some frog spawn to Nursery which is now in a tank and is getting a lot of interest; already we have some tadpoles swimming around!! Some of the children were cooking this week; soup is a very popular snack so Mrs McLatchie & her helpers made lentil soup; everyone had snack together and we sat at tables as if we were in a café. We finished off the week by making paper aeroplanes and flying them in the Nursery; with a little bit of practice they were flying very well indeed!
Next week we will begin planning our space topic with the children!
Fairtrade Breakfast (3rd March)
Thank you to everyone who supported our Fairtrade Breakfast this morning! We were excited to be participating in Fairtrade Fortnight by holding our very own Fairtrade Breakfast. Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, toast with Fairtrade jam and honey, Fairtrade geo bars and Fairtrade oaty biscuits were all on offer. A big thank to the Cooperative Food shop in Dalbeattie who kindly donated the Fairtrade bananas. We also had some taster Divine chocolates to sample. Mrs Van Zwanenberg, a local Traidcraft representative, joined us with a variety of Fairtrade items available for purchase. Look out for our article and photos in the Galloway News soon. We are looking forward to another great Fairtrade breakfast next week. Please contact the office if you wish to attend and haven’t yet returned a slip or if you wish to return for another great breakfast!

P5D take part in RSPB Birdwatch
Primary 5D pupils recently took part in the RSPB’s Birdwatch. Rangers from RSPB Mersehead worked with the pupils to help them identify a variety of birds in our local environment. Pupils carried out their study and then recorded the class results on the RSPB website. Pupils also had fun making their own bird feeders on the day too.
P5D prepare for the Music Festival
Salmon in the Classroom!
We are very excited to be participating in the Salmon in the Classroom Project run by Galloway Fisheries Trust. We set up a tank system in school where 100 salmon eggs were left to hatch under our care. The Eco Committee and Primary 5D pupils received a visit from a fisheries biologist who told us all about the lifecycle of the Atlantic Salmon and how to care for them as part of this project. Classes throughout the school have watched a short animation film all about their lifecycle. Our eggs have now all hatched and the salmon (now known as alevins) are currently feeding off their yolk sacs. Next week, members of our Eco Committee, Mrs Dyson and Mrs Howie will accompany the salmon as they are released by the fisheries biologist at the Dee Hatchery next to Loch Ken.
P5 Visit RSPB Mersehead
Primary 5 enjoyed a great day visiting RSPB Mersehead as part of their topic work “Around Scotland”. We learned about the journey of Barney the Barnacle Goose as he made his way from Svalbard in the Arctic Circle to Mersehead. We collaborated in groups to create our own beach art using natural materials. We observed and identified a variety of birds. We also learned about the lifecycle of the rare Natterjack Toad which can also be found at Mersehead.
Skerryvore Final Performances
Primary 7 pupils from Dalbeattie Primary and Cluster Schools, performed their completed songs with Skerryvore at Dalbeattie Primary School on Tuesday 23rd February. All groups performed extremely well and the concert was enjoyed by parents and friends who joined us for the afternoon.
