WELCOME BACK TO PRIMARY 6/7 24/25: TERM 2
Hello and welcome back after the October holidays. I hope that everyone had a well earned rest, and had a lovely time with family and friends.
Please be aware that this term PE sessions will be on a Monday from 10-11am with Mrs Gray (please come to school dressed in PE kit) and also on a Wednesday with P7s having Sports Leaders and P6s having PE with Miss Rodger (please bring PE kit with you to change after break).
We will also hope to have some outdoor learning sessions, however this will be weather dependant, and I will keep everyone posted about when they will be.
Homework will be set on a Monday to include reading and spelling, as well as some SUMDOG to help class Maths learning. Please can all parents comment in homework diaries and sign that HW has been completed.
I am looking forward to a brilliant, packed term of new experiences and learning. Please do get in touch with any questions that you may have.
Thank you, Mrs Campbell.
WEEK ENDING 15th NOVEMBER
The children have enjoyed a wide variety of learning experiences in class this week, including netball in PE, which brought out the competitive side in everyone, and was a lot of fun.
We began our Sustainable Farming and Food production topic by looking at what foods should go into a healthy diet, and playing the Eatwell Guide interactive plate game. We will follow up by creating Healthy Eating posters to share across the school. STEM was great fun this week too, as we were able to make our own wind turbines using electric motors. This linked to us learning all about renewable energy.
I also sent a letter out about the Christmas Fayre on the 3rd of December and have had kind offers of help already which is much appreciated. We are hoping that we can make money for the class, to be used as part of our learning.
I will look forward to seeing everyone at Parents Night on Wednesday to discuss your child’s learning and progress.
Thank you, Mrs Campbell.
WEEK ENDING 8th NOVEMBER
Well we have had another incredibly busy week in class.
Since the start of the term we have completed writing activities focussed on Bonfire Night and Remembrance. We have written Night of Senses poetry all about fireworks, and also written Autumn Haiku poetry and blackout poetry linked to Remembrance. The children loved learning about Guy Fawkes, and his tragic downfall, and we made amazing WANTED posters all about him. As part of our reading homework we created quizzes to test each other on the books that we had been reading.
Our STEM Learning this term is focussing on Renewable Energy and we began to explore wind energy this week. We used our design, initiative and creative skills to produce our own turbines, and pin wheels too.
We had a lovely walk to the park, and looked at the war memorial, the history of granite in Dalbeattie and collected Autumnal natural objects, as well as sharing some of our Haiku poetry.
Finally at the end of the week the children had great fun on the scooters – I enjoyed it too!! Well done everyone – a super week of learning and new experiences! Mrs Campbell.
GREAT TO BE BACK!
Some photos from today: PE with Halloween games and spooky Halloween art! Pick-a -Witch, Stein or Pumpkin!!
At the end of last term we used the Metaskills initiative, creativity, collaborating, focussing to create some fantastic board games. We hope to share these with other classes soon!
Sponsored Walk:
WIDER ACHIEVEMENTS: It would be lovely to share some wider achievements of everyone in P67. If you have any photos of football games, rugby, gymnastics, biking, horse riding, music, performing or anything else please do e-mail them in. I will look forward to seeing them. Thank you.
WEEK ENDING FRIDAY 27th SEPTEMBER:
This week we have been busy in class participating in Maths Week Scotland. This included a a variety of different activities including collaborating with P1 writing a maths story, sharing our learning and application of METASKILLS, as well as taking part in two live lessons ourselves. These were brilliant, as we learnt all about formula one racing, and how maths is a huge part of this, from data gathering, to the temperature, speed around the track and how the cars work. We also looked at analysing risk, and looking at the probability of changes to the weather, and the time it takes to make a pit stop affecting the outcome of the race. We also heard from an author who has written a story all about maths!
In class we also created comics based on the MWS character Finn Finity, and everyone had fantastic ideas for their stories. We then used Book Creator to put together an online book that included the same character! We also enjoyed taking part in the SUMDOG national competition.
In our STEM Learning we have been exploring electricity, how to use it safely in the home and at school, and where electricity comes from. We have built circuits, and also made our own batteries using lemons!! Yes lemons! The citric acid creates a chemical reaction that produces a small charge as measured by the voltmeter!
FAIR TRADE:
Today we have been learning about Fair Trade as it is currently Fair Trade fortnight. fair Trade is so important as it supports communities around the world, and ensures that they receive a fair price for their crops such as banana, coffee beans and cocoa. I have given everyone a quiz to complete to help raise funds for Fair Trade, please have a go and help to raise some funds, and you might win a prize!!
This year we will be linking our learning to METASKILLS. These are skills that the children will use as they move up to high school, and throughout life and work. At the end of many of our lessons we will be discussing which Meta -skills we may have used, as part of our learning.
CLASS CHARTER:
As part of our class learning we have been focusing on children’s rights through the UNHCR. We have considered all the articles and discussed the ones that we felt are most relevant to us, and our classroom. We then came up with our Classroom Charter, and the children loved using Minions as part of our display!
Week Ending Friday 13th September:
The term is certainly flying in, and we have covered so much in P67 already. The children have been amazing, all very enthusiastic, and we have all been working very hard indeed.
Outdoor learning has definitely been a hit! It is so good for collaborative working, communication skills, problem solving and well being to be outdoors. We have spent time building animal homes for our plasticine animals, and this week we identified as many different leaves as we could find around the school grounds, and talked about the importance of trees and shrubs for our ecosystems.
We have also started our electricity STEM topic; the children have been investigating circuits, and experimenting with lamps, and buzzers and switches as well as investigating conductors and insulators. This week we will making our own batteries from lemons!
We have also worked hard at speech making for Eco and Pupil councillor. We talked about the language that we should use in our writing, and how we can persuade our classmates to give us the vote! We have spent time learning about bullying, and how to respect each other. We have considered different types of discrimination, which has linked to our class novel Windrush Child, as Leonard (the main character in the story) experienced racism when he moved from Jamaica to the UK.
In literacy we are writing about our pets, and using descriptive language as part of that. In maths we are now moving onto partitioning numbers and multiplying by 10,100,1000.
The class have also really enjoyed rugby sessions too! A very busy time indeed!!
Week Ending Friday 30th August:
We have had a great time settling back into school in P6/7. All the children have been amazing, working together, and working hard. We have done lots of settling in activities including playing games, and had fun with outdoor learning too.
We have started our topic work reviewing our Class Charter, learning about our rights, and researching several significant figures that have changed rights for so many. This week we will be creating Power Points about ‘My Hero’ and consider all the good things that they have done. This week we will be focusing on descriptive writing, and continuing with electricity in our STEM lesson.
Please remember PE on Monday and Thursday, and remember suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for Wednesday.
As always please do get in touch with any questions.
Thankyou, Mrs Campbell.
